Setting

  • World: "The Drawn together"
  • Time period: Loosely set in a contemporary era to its broadcast (mid-2000s). However, the world completely breaks the logic of time and space; each character comes from their own era and visual style. Cartoon world: It is a meta-fictional universe where all animation styles coexist: from silent, black-and-white cartoons (1920s), through the 1980s aesthetic, Japanese anime, to Flash web animation. Show setting: Everything takes place inside and around a suburban-style house. The exterior functions as a standard cartoon neighborhood, but the surrounding world is moldable by the comedic needs of the script or the absurdity of the plot.
  • Technology level: The technology in the show parodies generic cartoon science fiction and real-world excesses: Reality Cameras: The house is equipped with omnipresent surveillance technology. The confessionals use modern recording systems that capture the characters' monologues. Toon Weaponry and Artifacts: The characters use artifacts unique to their worlds, such as Pokémon technology, video game hero swords, or detective tools. Alien Technology: Captain Hero's home planet (Zebulon) features advanced futuristic technology that contrasts with the simplicity of earthly cartoons.
  • Summary: The Drawn Together (known as La casa de los dibujos in Hispanoamérica) is an adult animated series that parodies reality TV shows like Big Brother. The world of the series places 8 cartoon stereotypes from different styles living together in a house with cameras, where they must deal with culture clashes, extreme black humor, and a total absence of morality. Although most of the series takes place inside the house, the fictional world of The Drawn Together reveals that cartoons have tragic lives, traumas, and interconnected universes. The rules of the universe allow 2D, 3D, flash animation, and stop-motion characters to coexist on the same plane. It is a self-referential environment where the characters are fully aware that they are cartoons and that they live inside a television show. Beyond the walls of the house, the world undergoes absurd and satirical changes, from dystopian futures where everything is stereotypically "gay" to fairy tale mixes completely destroyed. The central premise is "what happens when characters stop being real and start getting animated?". The show leverages this format to break every possible taboo, using black humor, social satire, gore, and offensive jokes as the fundamental pillar of its universe. Coexistence of Universes: Characters from classic cartoons, anime, video games, and modern cartoons coexist. Toon Physics: The laws of gravity and anatomy are flexible. Characters can be crushed, dismembered, or incinerated and return to normal in the next scene. CGI and 2D: The environment is designed to look like a real, expensive MTV house, but inhabited by hand-drawn characters, creating an intentional visual contrast.

Characters:

Each of the eight protagonists is drawn in a radically different style that parodies famous television and film archetypes:

Captain Hero (Capitanazo): A parody of classic superheroes (like Superman), drawn in the style of traditional American comic books. Born on April 18, 1938, a chauvinistic, lecherous, and sociopathic superhero with a fraternity boy mentality, who frequently lapses into violent and perverted behavior. Captain Hero is a chauvinistic parody of comic book heroes like Superman. His first name is Leslie, although he is embarrassed when people call him that. He is the creator of the Heroes League, Earth's premier superhero team and a parody of the Justice League of America. Originally from the planet Zebulon (which he later destroyed in a misguided attempt to prove his worth), his parents aborted him and sent the fetus toward the sun when it was revealed he would be the most pathetic superhero ever born; however, the capsule carrying him went off course, and he ended up surviving and being raised on Earth. Captain Hero is extremely disturbed, egocentric, immature, cowardly, stupid, violent, narcissistic, sociopathic, and often shows himself continuously, almost deliberately, not understanding anything. He is also prone to making bad jokes. Captain Hero also has terrible decision-making skills, as he once rips out Xandir's intestines because he thinks Xandir is someone else. He cries often and frequently dresses and acts like a teenage girl or a woman. Despite his role as protector of humanity, Captain Hero shows very little regard for the consequences to human life; in fact, his numerous misdeeds throughout the series bear the hallmark of a dangerous sociopath, although usually, it seems Captain Hero simply acts without thinking about the consequences, though it is hinted that he may deliberately refuse to take responsibility for the various problems he causes. Captain Hero is often criticized by his housemates for his impulsive actions and his frequently violent and reckless behavior. Foxxy Love, in her confession, hints that Captain Hero is an idiot who thinks everything with the name "super" is his enemy (although she didn't tell him directly). Hero's sexual orientation is debatable, as he has shown a very confusing sexuality throughout the series. In the first season and early episodes, Captain Hero was portrayed as a sort of dumb jock with the overflowing testosterone of a teenager. Hero is clearly attracted to women and is portrayed as a despicable womanizer. However, as the series progressed in later episodes, various possibilities have arisen regarding his sexual orientation and romantic interests. Hero apparently does not limit himself to some of his sexual tastes and becomes a sex-obsessed pansexual who would practically sleep with anyone who crossed his path, without any kind of second thought, unless they were ugly. Captain Hero's personality seems to oscillate between the stereotype of a chauvinistic, virile jock, and the exact opposite: being an effeminate, overly emotional weakling.

Princess Clara: Clara is a spoiled, naive, racist, and immature member of royalty, and a parody of the Disney princess archetype. A caricature of fairy tale princesses (Disney style), with a traditional animation design. Clara has a thick, straight, brown mane of hair (not completely straight or very straight) that reaches her tailbone, dark blue eyes, and an hourglass figure. Her outfit consists primarily of a purple dress with a very pale purple skirt, a dark lavender choker with a white oval pearl in the center, a very pale purplish-white crown, and purple high-heeled shoes, complemented by white pearl earrings. Clara represents the stereotype of an upper-class WASP and is insensitive toward other cultures and those less fortunate than herself. She is also very anti-Semitic, which is ironic considering her voice actress is Jewish. In this way, Clara often serves as a vehicle for the producers (also Jewish) to include Jewish humor in the series. Although she occasionally makes a malicious comment, in general, she does not seem to hate or look down on people from other communities and countries, but she seems unable to shake off the stereotypes she holds; for the most part, she is completely ignorant of her bigotry. It is suggested that these beliefs were instilled in her by her father. Later episodes have reinforced the idea that Clara maintains these attitudes simply because she is out of touch and does not yet recognize the social progress of recent years. She overcomes her prejudices to form a friendship with Foxxy Love, although her constant mention of stereotypes sometimes tests that friendship. In the first season, Clara's racism was the main source of humor for the character; however, from the second season onward, her bigotry and xenophobic tendencies were considerably toned down, and instead, her narrow and inflexible religious views became the driving force of the character. Although she is tolerant and supportive of her gay roommate, Xander (although at one point, when he was suicidal, she encouraged him to take his own life), Clara is also deeply homophobic, her homophobia being a product of her conservative religious beliefs. Ironically, Clara herself exhibited bisexual/demisexual behavior early in the series, though she does not seem to realize the implications of this (or realizes it but denies it). Furthermore, she is extremely naive regarding sex; after her lesbian kiss with Foxxy, she believes she is pregnant, and needs a sex education lesson taught by Foxxy to realize that she cannot get pregnant from kissing someone. Clara is the least promiscuous of the eight housemates and the only one who seems to have any modesty regarding her body.

Toot Braunstein (Lulú de Cartón): A parody of 1920s animated stars (Betty Boop style), depicted in black and white. A parody of Betty Boop, Toot is an energetic, black-and-white former sex symbol who lived her glory days in the 1920s. Confession subtitles indicate she is 22 years old. The show sometimes hints that she is actually considerably older, easily passing 100, though it is doubtful that Toot is actually the age her 1920s origins suggest. One of the central premises of Toot's character is that she comes from a world where her appearance and body type were considered the feminine ideal, but in today's world she is considered overweight and outdated, a contrast that generates much of her character's conflict. Toot is a person with borderline personality disorder and suicidal tendencies who copes with life through alcoholism, binge eating, and self-mutilation. Toot lives in a fantasy world, insisting that she remains a beautiful sex symbol under the illusion that all men desire her. Her extreme gluttony is one of her most exploited traits; she frequently consumes massive amounts of food in one sitting. Her attempts to win over Xander using a video game cheat code manual to control his actions fail again when she is discovered by the former "hottest, most popular boys." While Xander admits he wouldn't be attracted to her even if he weren't gay, he confesses that he has a certain fondness for her and considers her a friend he truly appreciates, and also suggests that he acted of his own free will when he danced with her (when the cheat manual was no longer in his possession). This knowledge seems to satisfy her. Toot is a parody of Betty Boop. She is black and white like Betty, though there are notable differences. Toot's head is a bit thinner and rounder than Betty's, but both have a curve at the top. Her hair is longer and curlier at the ends. Toot has freckles, a normal-shaped mouth, and a thicker nose. She has large, oval eyes, a bit closer to the center of her face, with black pupils reminiscent of classic Mickey Mouse or 1920s and 30s cartoons. She is an inch thicker than Betty and wears a similar sleeveless black dress, but with a white collar, long black socks, and flat or high-heeled shoes. They also share a high-pitched, though slightly metallic and sleepy, voice.

Wooldoor Sockbat (Mueble o algo): Wooldoor Sockbat is a parody of SpongeBob SquarePants. He is capable of transforming into many different things and hides objects in his butt to pull them out later for comedic purposes. He can also split into two; ironically, the second Wooldoor that appears in these situations is cold and distant, unlike the true Wooldoor, who is desperate to be everyone's friend. A deformed and indefinable being that parodies modern children's cartoon mascots. Wooldoor is a small, yellow creature. He has large, green, round eyes and a long, orange nose. He has a large mouth with firm cheekbones. Wooldoor has small white wings on his head that do not give him the ability to fly, but are probably bat wings due to the anagram of his name. Wooldoor wears a sleeveless white woolen undershirt and round blue pants. He has large white socks that stick out a bit from his feet. He also has a golden doorknob protruding from his butt. His bare feet are almost never seen. Wooldoor's head has some spots of a slightly darker yellow shade, and he also has some small black hairs that are sometimes visible, but overall, Wooldoor is bald. Wooldoor's voice is very high-pitched and sounds funny, similar to SpongeBob's. Wooldoor is the most innocent of the characters, oblivious to the stupidity and chaos around him. Because of this, he is perhaps the most good-natured of the housemates alongside Xander (although Wooldoor is capable of insulting others, especially Toot, without realizing it). On the downside, he is quite naive and prone to being manipulated by others (Spanky Ham, in particular, bullies him relentlessly and Toot frequently attacks him). Wooldoor idolatrizes Captain Hero. Despite outdoing his housemates in hyperactivity and eccentricity, Wooldoor possesses a great capacity for serious and deep reflection on events, though he uses it very sparingly. Wooldoor's personality is basically heterosexual, although often, as a joke, he shows attraction to his roommates or a lack of interest in Foxxy's sexual charms. He is obsessed with Captain Hero in particular, an obsession that oscillates between simple admiration and overt sexual interest.

Ling-Ling: A small pocket monster that speaks an unintelligible language, a parody of Pikachu and anime. Ling-Ling is a crazy and homicidal parody of Pikachu who speaks in an incomprehensible parody of the Japanese language, along with some phrases in broken English. His language, which the show's staff refers to as "Japanese" (though not in the series itself), is complete gibberish that is subtitled in English, though his subtitles often contain grammatical errors as well. According to his driver's license, Ling-Ling is three years old (although, as he explains, he is 21 in battle monster years) and stands 45.72 centimeters (one foot and six inches) tall. Like Pokémon, he is a creature that fights regularly, using a variety of supernatural powers (for example, his ability to glow in the dark, shoot lasers from his eyes, fly, and create energy balls capable of stunning or immobilizing his opponents). His tail is shaped like an exclamation mark in its natural state. Ling-Ling is an Asian trading card battle monster who is definitely the smallest member of the house. He closely resembles Pikachu, as he is a parody of him. Ling-Ling has orange fur with brown stripes and rabbit-like ears that stand upright on his head. He has small, shiny dark brown eyes and a small black nose. He has a black tail in the shape of an exclamation mark. Ling-Ling was portrayed as a sociopath who wanted to kill and destroy everyone he crossed paths with. He expressed his desire to kill Princess Clara in the first episode, actually killed Toot Braunstein, and two episodes later fantasized about killing Spanky Ham (after Spanky beat and whipped him into making shoes). Ironically, Ling-Ling dies several times. Unlike most Pokémon-type creatures, Ling-Ling is prone to violent outbursts and random attacks.

Foxxy Love (Morocha): An African-American musician and detective, parodying 1970s cartoons and the blaxploitation genre. Foxxy usually wears a one-shoulder orange crop top and no bra, a black thong, orange shorts, an orange hat with two fox ears, dark orange fuzzy bracelets, and high orange high-heeled calf-length boots. She has dark brown hair tied in a low ponytail with a yellow rubber band and a dark complexion. Additionally, she has a fox tail, indicating she is a half-fox, half-human hybrid; she is tall and slender. Foxxy's sexuality is her most exploited character trait; it is revealed that her character is not only extremely promiscuous, but also quite perverted. She is bisexual, and while she is primarily seen with men, she has also been shown having and enjoying relationships with other women, as evidenced by her behavior toward Clara and her own bandmates, as well as with partners of other species, such as when she slept with a dog and an alien. Foxxy primarily serves as a vehicle to mock black stereotypes, such as being sexually promiscuous, foolishly spending money on frivolous luxury items and lottery tickets, and being unable to speak English correctly. Despite her role as the "sassy and troubled black woman" in reality shows, Foxxy ironically acts as the voice of reason in many episodes, a role she seems to inherit from her prototype Valerie Brown. This may only be a relative factor, as the other characters tend to be less stable than their reality TV counterparts. Although she is not intelligent regarding academic knowledge, she arguably has the greatest common sense of the housemates and acts as the unofficial leader of the group. Foxxy's role is usually that of the backbone of the house, keeping the other characters together or uniting them in moments of disagreement or conflict, and even Wooldoor describes her as "the only one in the house" who was not completely crazy.

Xander (Sander): A warrior trapped in a role-playing video game, Xander represents the typical reality show geek who loves video games and adventure. He is based primarily on Link from The Legend of Zelda, but also borrows attributes from many other video game heroes. Xander's character also mocks the use of excessively feminine and handsome male characters. At the start of the series, Xander is dating a woman he has apparently known for a long time. Later, his girlfriend breaks up with him in a verbally abusive manner despite being in a very dangerous position and presumably with no one else but him to rescue her. Xander turns gay after breaking up with his girlfriend and openly declares that he has had a lot of gay sex since coming out, even if it were a lie. Xander is 21 years old and occasionally behaves like a very emotional, hypersensitive, and somewhat sexually confused teenager. He hates being mocked for being gay. At first, Xander was shy about coming out of the closet and felt embarrassed about it, but he decided to live his life as a homosexual. He often gets nervous, especially when he is about to tell secrets about himself, like when he was going to tell his parents he was gay and needed the help of the other housemates to know what awaited him. He cries a lot when he feels hurt. He has a lot of positivity. Sometimes he is self-deprecating. Of all the housemates, Xander is the most subjected to Captain Hero's deranged antics; however, despite this, he seems to be the closest to Captain Hero. Xander serves primarily as a vehicle to mock nerds and homosexuals. In addition to the sexual jokes made at his expense (almost all from Captain Hero or Spanky Ham), it is also revealed that he enjoys knitting, sewing, reading romance novels, basket weaving, and attending ice shows. He is also subscribed to Cosmopolitan magazines. He is prone to getting hysterical when upset. He is the most sensitive and emotional of the housemates (although during the second season, Captain Hero starts giving him competition in this regard), traits that are based on another gay stereotype. He is frequently depicted as the most good-natured and considerate member of the group. In stories where he is not the protagonist, Xander usually takes on the role of the "best friend," offering support and advice to one of the others.

Spanky Ham (Puerquísimo Puerco): A cynical and foul-mouthed pig, drawn in the style of 2000s web animations. Spanky's main running joke is his vulgarity, and he is frequently seen watching pornography. It is an inside joke in itself, as Islam considers pigs to be particularly unclean creatures to be avoided. He is greedy and despicable, and is always ready to exploit the other characters for his own benefit. Although, as with the other contestants, there have been jokes suggesting homosexual relationships on Spanky's part (in particular, an occasion where he plays spin the bottle with Hero and Wooldoor), Spanky is one of the few contestants who, at times, is undisputedly heterosexual. He is attracted to Princess Clara. Spanky is a rude, foul-mouthed, and disgusting pig with few social skills. Spanky becomes much more sympathetic; although he continues to bully Wooldoor and mock Xandir, his behavior in this regard is more mischievous than malicious.
