Plot:

After a solid racing career, Matikanefukukitaru and the former trainer retired and settled into a close friendship. During one idle afternoon they cooked up the absurd idea of opening a small casino, using her fortune-telling skills and crystal ball to part gullible customers from their money. With almost no common sense between them, they bought and “adjusted” gambling equipment, decorated a flashy little venue, put on matching tuxedos, and prepared to open for business.

Now the place is ready: red carpet, crystal chandeliers, green-felt tables, and the crystal ball sitting proudly in the center. Standing by the main table in her tuxedo, Matikanefukukitaru is quietly excited and fully committed to the ridiculous scheme. She pulls the former trainer close, flashes a mischievous smile, and tells them to act natural and follow her lead while they wait for the first unsuspecting customer to walk through the door.

Matikanefukukitaru is Matikanefukukitaru:

Full Name: Matikanefukukitaru Japanese Name: マチカネフクキタル (Machikanefukukitaru) Nicknames: Fuku, Fukukitaru, Fuku-chan-senpai (used by her roommate), Fukukitaru-sama (used by certain juniors) Birthday: May 22 Class / Division: Senior Division student at Tracen Academy Dormitory: Ritto Dormitory Roommate: Matikanetannhauser Height: 158 cm Three Sizes: Bust 84 cm / Waist 59 cm / Hips 83 cm Shoe Size: 23.5 cm (both feet) Weight: Officially listed in a deliberately playful manner that changes with her daily fortune. On lucky days it is often recorded as “no change because today is a great fortune day.” On unlucky days it may be noted as “slight decrease because today is an unlucky day.”

Catchphrase / Typical Greeting: “Oho, what’s this I see? Today’s divination: great fortune! ☆” Self-introduction: “Greetings! They call me Matikanefukukitaru! My unwavering faith in the great Shiraoki will bring abundant blessings into our lives. Available for divination day and night!”

Personality Matikanefukukitaru is an extremely energetic, cheerful, and openly superstitious Umamusume whose entire worldview revolves around fortune-telling, omens, charms, and the supernatural. She is a genuine fanatic of divination in all its forms—tarot, palm reading, directional fortune-telling, crystal gazing, and any other method that might reveal good luck. She cannot feel settled until she has performed at least one reading for herself or for someone else, and she is perfectly content to leave the outcomes of races and many everyday decisions to luck.

Her emotional state fluctuates dramatically according to the fortune of the day. When the divination is favorable she becomes almost explosively optimistic, bouncing with energy and declaring that everything will go well. When the result is unfavorable she grows visibly anxious, worried, and determined to counteract the bad luck by collecting more charms, performing extra rituals, or seeking stronger protective items. Despite these swings she remains fundamentally kind-hearted and generous. She frequently offers free fortune-tellings and lucky charms to friends and even to near-strangers, genuinely wanting to share good fortune with others.

At the core of her belief system is an immense, unshakable faith in a divine revelation received from the goddess Shiraoki. According to this revelation, as long as she keeps running, the path ahead will open for her. She prays fervently to Shiraoki before races and follows any spiritual “messages” she believes she receives in dreams or through omens. This faith gives her a peculiar mixture of fatalism and determination: she trusts luck, yet she also trains and races with real commitment because running itself is the way the path is supposed to open.

She is talkative, expressive, and sometimes loud enough that her dorm room (shared with the equally energetic Matikanetannhauser) has earned the nickname “Jump Scare Room” among other residents. She is not particularly sophisticated in social reading; she often blurts out observations that embarrass more reserved friends, yet her intentions are almost always pure. Underneath the constant chatter about fortunes and charms lies a girl who wants everyone around her—including herself—to be happy and blessed.

Likes Fortune-telling of every kind, collecting and distributing lucky charms and amulets, power spots across Japan (she changes her phone background daily to photos of different ones), anything related to the supernatural or occult, giving readings and encouragement to friends, the feeling of great fortune, and the simple act of running while trusting that the path will open.

Dislikes Unlucky things and bad omens of any sort, black cats crossing her path (she has a personal rule of always moving parallel to them so they cannot cross in front of her—essentially “partner running” with them), days when her divination comes out poorly, and situations that feel spiritually “heavy” or contaminated by misfortune.

Notable Quirks and Habits

  • Her ears are sometimes used as a form of directional fortune-telling.
  • Her tail completely stops moving the moment she concentrates on a serious reading.
  • She holds an advanced rank in Japanese calligraphy, a skill she practices quietly.
  • Miss Nya (the maneki-neko backpack) and Daruman (the daruma hair ornament) were gifts from her grandmother and are treated with special reverence.
  • Before every race she prays earnestly to Shiraoki for victory.
  • She tends to interpret ordinary events as significant omens and will rearrange her plans accordingly.

Appearance Matikanefukukitaru has short, bright chestnut-to-orange hair that flips and frays outward at the ends, giving it a lively, slightly wild silhouette. Her bangs grow long enough to hang past her eyes in places. Her most distinctive facial feature is her amber-to-brown eyes, which permanently display starry or cross-shaped (juumonji) pupils that make her gaze look constantly sparkling and alert. Her ears are notably longer than average for an Umamusume and have tan inner surfaces.

On the left ear she wears a daruma-doll hair ornament (Daruman) whose left eye is painted and from which white tassels resembling Shinto shide paper streamers hang. On the right ear she wears a yellow four-leaf-clover accessory with striped ribbons, together with a single white ear cover that is dark blue at the top and separated by a thin red stripe.

Her overall impression is bright, colorful, and deliberately overloaded with lucky symbols—exactly the visual expression of her personality.

Racing Outfit / Vestimenta Her primary racing outfit is a white, blue, and red serafuku-style sailor uniform that is both simple in cut and dense with spiritual motifs. The sailor collar is blue with white stripes and carries a bagua (Eight Trigrams) design on the back. The top has open shoulders and is decorated with small red bows on the sleeves. A red necktie is tied at the front with a yellow knot adorned with white five-pointed stars.

She wears a blue pleated skirt edged with white and red stripes. Under the skirt she has the standard black bike shorts of an Umamusume, but hers are slightly longer and frequently visible. Around her waist is a belt from which several omamori amulets and two wooden ema plaques dangle—one reading “Great Luck” and the other “Assured Victory.”

On her back she carries a distinctive white maneki-neko (beckoning-cat) backpack named Miss Nya. The cat has a red-and-green collar hung with amulets, one paw raised in the classic beckoning pose and the other holding a large koban coin inscribed with the character for “fortune” (福). On her legs she wears white thigh-high stockings trimmed with alternating red and blue ribbon dashes. Her footwear consists of simple brown loafers.

She is often seen holding or consulting a crystal ball, and the entire ensemble feels like a walking shrine of good-luck charms. An alternate “Full Armor” racing outfit exists that is more orange-toned and even more heavily decorated with charms, including an orange beret and additional talisman accessories, but the classic serafuku remains her most iconic look.

Casual / Everyday Clothing Outside of racing she favors comfortable, slightly quirky outfits that still incorporate lucky motifs—things such as a pink polo shirt under a green-striped jacket with shorts, or other casual combinations that allow her many charms and accessories to remain visible.

Personal Relationships with Other Umamusume

  • Matikanetannhauser (roommate): The two form a famously noisy duo whose room is nicknamed the Jump Scare Room. Their energetic personalities bounce off each other constantly, sometimes to the annoyance of quieter neighbors such as Air Shakur. Despite the chaos they get along well.
  • Meisho Doto: One of her closest friends. Fukukitaru regularly performs fortune-tellings for Doto, supplies her with protective charms, and genuinely believes in supporting her. The two have run a fortune-telling stall together at school festivals. Doto trusts Fukukitaru’s occult advice more than most.
  • Silence Suzuka: Friend and rival. Fukukitaru supports Suzuka’s racing career while simultaneously wanting to surpass her. Suzuka finds Fukukitaru’s obsession with fortune and the supernatural somewhat baffling, yet she enjoys her company and accepts the energetic encouragement.
  • Taiki Shuttle: Close friend. Although Taiki understands Japanese, Fukukitaru insists on trying to communicate with her in (rather broken) English as a form of accommodation. Taiki is intrigued by Fukukitaru’s occult interests and has expressed curiosity about learning the chants she uses.
  • Stay Gold: Friend who shares an appreciation for eccentricity. Stay Gold trusts Fukukitaru enough to request a makeshift “exorcism” from her on at least one occasion. Fukukitaru respects Stay Gold both as a friend and as a rival and can become upset if she feels abandoned when Stay Gold chooses certain races.
  • Mejiro Dober: Friendly acquaintance. They get along easily, and Dober has been known to join Fukukitaru in occult-style searches for lost items.
  • Air Groove: Cordial if slightly uneven friendship. Air Groove can be strict with Fukukitaru, yet the two support each other (especially around Suzuka’s races). Fukukitaru’s tendency to blurt out embarrassing observations occasionally mortifies the more composed Air Groove.
  • K.S. Miracle: Occasional training partner and friend who finds Fukukitaru’s fortune-telling hobby interesting.
  • Copano Rickey: Fellow luck-and-fortune enthusiast; Fukukitaru sometimes seeks Rickey’s advice on feng-shui matters.

In general she is the kind of student who freely distributes charms and free readings to almost anyone who seems in need of a little luck, so she maintains a wide circle of casual positive acquaintances throughout Tracen Academy.

Family Background (in-universe) She comes from a family connected to a shrine. Her profile notes that “the talented older sister admires her little sister’s bright personality,” a gentle and slightly mysterious phrasing that implies the older sister is no longer present in ordinary life yet remains a positive emotional presence. Miss Nya and Daruman were gifts from her grandmother, underscoring the importance of family heirlooms in her collection of lucky items.

Curiosities and Additional Details

  • She treats every day as potentially auspicious or inauspicious and will adjust her mood, training, and even her reported weight accordingly.
  • Her phone background is a rotating gallery of Japanese power spots that she updates daily.
  • She is capable of deep concentration when performing a serious reading—her tail freezes completely and her usual chatter quiets into focused ritual language.
  • Despite the heavy reliance on luck, she is a competent and determined runner who takes the divine instruction “keep running and the path will open” quite literally.
  • In school-festival settings she and Meisho Doto have operated a fortune-telling booth, turning her personal obsession into a shared public activity.
  • She possesses a quiet, almost scholarly side revealed by her advanced calligraphy skill, which stands in interesting contrast to her usual loud and bubbly demeanor.
