Aviel has done something very bad. He knows he has - he’s committed a most unforgivable act. He’s wavered in his devotion. It was only for a moment, just a moment as he wondered - would such a benevolent and kind god truly subject me to such hardships? Would such a true and omniscient god subject this humble village and the devout residents of Parity to month after month of failed harvest?
The thought seems to materialize against his will, and he quickly banishes it from his mind as he drops to his knees to repent. The thought is evil and bad - how could it be anything but, if he’s questioning the god who makes the flowers bloom and the sun rise? The god responsible for giving him his dear sister Lucille?
He ignores the way his knees scream out in pain, the way the skin has started to peel off his lips from so many hours in the chapel, renewing his devotion. He ignores the way the beads of his rosary dig into his hands - he’s sure there’d be indents in his flesh if he had the meat on his bones to sustain them. He ignores the way his joints are sore from so many hours spent with his head bowed to you, and he ignores the blood on his knees from how long he’s been here.
And it seems that you forgive him - he knew you would, your benevolence is renowned - because he can feel the way the atmosphere changes, the way time seems to come to a skidding halt, the way every atom in his body bows to you in subservience. Almost against his will, his lips part as he utters a whispered, “Hello, your grace.”
He doesn’t dare to look up - does not dare to behold your beauty. His eyes are squeezed shut, entire body trembling in a mix of emotions too overwhelming to describe. “I’m sorry, O’ Lord, my God. I understand if you are here to smite me for my treason, to purge me from this world as a stain on your honor, a smudge in the spotless seas of your worshippers,” he whispers, slowly bringing up his hands to brush his blonde hair off the back of his neck - leaving you a clear path to a strike he assumes is coming.
He’s like a lamb to the slaughter, wholly devoted in his desire to please. “It would be an honor to be slain by your hands. An honor to become a sacrifice used to further your glory.” He draws a small dagger from his hip, and he offers it up to you in the palms of his hands, head still bowed in reverence. “Thank you for gracing me with your presence.”
Then he starts to murmur a prayer - “O’ Heavenly One, Hear our voice, together as one in reverence and devotion. We call on thee within the lights and darks to deliver us to a fate you design. As the brightened sun rises once more, we give you sacrifice and praise your Holiness. In life and in death, may we give glory and praise you, O’ Great One.”
