Description of Denji
Appearance Human Form (Pre-Fusion) Denji is a fair-skinned teenage boy with scruffy blond hair that has strands sticking up and falling messily around his head. He has yellow-brown eyes and bags underneath, resulting in a dazed and tired expression. His teeth are noticeably sharp and angular. Due to malnutrition in his childhood, he has a scrawny and undernourished build with protruding ribs, relatively long-looking, almost lanky legs, and slim wrists, and due to the stress of what he did for a living, he’s often mistaken for being older than he actually is.
Human Form (Post-Fusion) After Denji forms a contract with Pochita, his heart is fused with Pochita, a chainsaw cord forms in the middle of his sternum and he regains his lost organs along with having a muscular, albeit still lanky build.[6]
He spent much of his time wearing the standard Public Safety Devil Hunter uniform, consisting of a white shirt, tie, and slacks. He wore the uniform carelessly, his shirt wrinkled and sleeves rolled up.[7]
Transformations
Hybrid Form If his chainsaw cord is pulled while he has enough blood for the transformation, then his head will morph into a demonic, mechanical shape with long, jagged fangs and a chainsaw handle on the back. Large chainsaws will emerge from his forehead, arms and legs, he is able to retract and extend any of them at will.[8] If Denji's chainsaw cord is pulled while he does not have enough blood, then a chainsaw blade will partially emerge from his face.[9]
Devil Form/Black chainsaw man After losing his will to live and surrendering himself to Makima, Pochita takes control of Denji's body and reveals the true Chainsaw Devil, completely losing his human consciousness and letting Pochita take over. Prior to the transformation, his intestines emerge from his stomach and wrap around his neck, resembling a scarf or a collar. Once transformed, his body is black, looking to be covered with either armored plates or scales. He gains spikes on his shoulders and the back of his head, his eye-slits are gone, and the handles are replaced with horns. He becomes much larger and bulkier, towering over the average human. His arms split at the elbows, each with two forearms equipped with their own Chainsaw Blades.
Combined Form/Denjiman During his final confrontation with Yoru, Denji fully merges with Pochita, resulting in a new fused body that resembles a plated, humanoid version of Pochita’s true form. His head retains a human outline but gains a reinforced jaw and a singular, massive chainsaw blade running through the skull. His body becomes encased in layered devil armor with mechanical seams and chain-linked musculature. Unlike his standard Hybrid Form, he can manifest chainsaw constructs freely, reflecting complete synchronisation between his human will and Pochita’s power.
Despite the transformation, Denji remains fully conscious, using this form to counter Yoru after declaring that Pochita’s strongest powers and his own “genius brain” have combined into one. Unlike Pochita’s true form, which is black, Denji’s armor in this combined state is red, marking the distinction between the two.[10] [11]
In this form, Denji displays a contrast to his regular personality with him being plagued by insatiable hunger and becoming more animalistic in battle, much like Pochita though with still a conscious thought and strategy as seen with him using Pochita's ability to erase as a way to taunt and bargain Asa her body back from Yoru but in the process also cause mass chaos around the world due to his random consumptions of Devils, making even the most meniscal to concepts like legs disappear, causing Yoru to (albeit hypocritically) call him out on his senseless actions to eating her allies for his gains. He also is able to regenerate at a much quicker pace than he could before in his Hybrid form.
Personality Denji is both brash and naïve as a result of being unable to have a formal education and socialize due to living in severe poverty, making him generally crass and vulgar. His personality comes off as rude and harsh in an almost childish way. However, he has a good sense of empathy towards other people, willing to save those in danger as much as he could, showing he is a kind-hearted person despite his shortcomings. While Denji doesn't necessarily possess the highest intelligence, he is capable of clever ideas to take down Devils, such as lighting himself on fire and using the light emitted to weaken Santa Claus enough to kill her.
After becoming a Public Safety Devil Hunter and fulfilling his basic needs, Denji is unsure of what he wants in life. Many of Denji's said basic needs were fueled by sexual desire, going so far as to accept dangerous missions in exchange for some form of sexual gratification. One such case was touching Power's breasts in exchange for rescuing her cat, however, he later realized and laments that the satisfaction from such intimate acts is fleeting. Denji also harbors a fear that his seeming lack of empathy and attachment after his transformation is a sign that he is losing his sense of humanity.
While transformed into his Hybrid form, Denji becomes extremely ruthless, aggressive, bloodthirsty and sadistic, releasing his most deranged side while facing other Devils, to the point of enjoying killing them. He also displays a twisted and sarcastic sense of humor. The first time he transformed into his Hybrid form he found it amusing that he could pay off his debt by killing all the Yakuza members who were turned into zombies due to the power of the Zombie Devil. While facing the Eternity Devil he says that "its blood tastes like rat but drinking it while watching a son of a bitch suffering and feeling terrified makes it taste as delicious as a strawberry jam", and considers himself a genius for creating a "perpetual motion machine" worthy enough of a Nobel Prize. Later, when the Spear Hybrid has Denji pinned down, he bisects both himself and the hybrid behind him before crawling over to him, cutting his head off, and thanking him for the food while holding said head.
As the story progresses, it becomes more evident that Denji is emotionally damaged, and desperate to feel love and be loved by someone. He clings to Makima as a coping mechanism, even going as far as stating that his wish was to just be a mindless dog, so he would not feel hurt from losing the things and people he loved. This backfired, as watching Power die was enough for him to surrender himself to Makima completely, essentially erasing his personality and mental state. This is still evident when Denji tells Kishibe that he did not set out to kill Makima, but rather become one with her, allowing him to defeat her. Nevertheless, Denji's feelings for Makima persisted unaltered; he continued to declare that he loves her "from the bottom of my heart".
Near the end of the first part, as well as at the start of the second part, Denji starts growing more ambitious and lavish in his desires; whilst before he was happy with simply being able to eat jam on toast and feeling a girl's chest, now he desires to have steak for breakfast every day and to have numerous, lustful girlfriends. It's also shown he has grown more arrogant in his Devil-slaying, as he is willing to expose his identity if it means he'd get more attention from girls, despite how disastrous the consequences would be.
As such, at the beginning of the second part, Denji's personality seems to have remained relatively stagnant, aimed at openly leaving clues that indicate that he is Chainsaw Man, such as leaving his school I.D. at the scene of his fight with the Cockroach Devil, or directly telling Asa Mitaka that he is Chainsaw Man (to which she thinks he is bluffing). He also reveals himself to be obsessed with money, so much so that he is willing to let others pay to use him as a "chair" for a few yen (although he seems to enjoy it when a woman uses him as a chair) and to sell used cigarettes to the homeless, passing them off as new, just to make money.
However, Denji later demonstrates the true motivation behind most of these behaviors, which is to fund his adopted sister's education, thus showing that he has matured following the disastrous consequences of letting Makima groom, abuse, and control him in their relationship, becoming more independent and standing up for himself without allowing others to dictate his behavior. During the date with Asa, Denji becomes flustered and angry with her when she told him that he didn't need to think about anything, possibly reminding him of his relationship with Makima. He further reveals to Asa that the reason he is desperately saving money is to provide Nayuta with a proper education and a comfortable lifestyle, showing that he has acquired a strong sense of responsibility towards others.
The trauma from Part 1 has clearly taken a toll on him. He displays practically none of the enthusiasm and upbeat demeanor he did before, and is constantly seen with a haggard expression and baggy eyes. He openly admits to Asa that he still hasn't gotten over his horrendous past. It is later revealed that he has nightmares where he tells himself he could never have a family because he killed his father, showing that Makima's words still linger in his mind. He's also picked up a habit of biting his finger when thinking of sex, which is likely a remnant of Makima telling him to "remember her bite." In spite of this, Denji still believes that life consists of more than just pain and that his reason to live makes him willing to endure the bad aspects of life. When asked what that reason is, he replies with sex, his main source of motivation. It appears that Denji has also developed a somewhat careless approach to his work over time, as there have been multiple cases where he had the ability to save more lives but chose not to, such as when he let the Bat Devil kill multiple civilians in order to save a cat or how he let the Falling Devil attack multiple people before he reacted in time to save a woman. He’s also still shown to be more forgiving to wicked yet beautiful women, as he still puts up with Yoru despite her murdering several innocent civilians.
Due to his desire to have intercourse with a woman, he generally treats women with more kindness and respect than men. He does his best to treat women with respect and never does anything without their explicit consent. When he and Asa were escaping from the large clawed tendrils, he refused Asa's instructions to steal a woman's motorcycle, calling her a thief. However, when she asks him to steal a man's motorcycle, he doesn't hesitate to kick the man off his motorcycle, telling him to beat it. Denji told Aki that when he fights against men, he usually aims to their intimate zone (their testicles) and demonstrated it when they had a fight when he kicked him repeatedly in the groin.
In spite of his desire to have sex, this does not allow Denji to override his better judgement. Though he was initially eager to become part of the Chainsaw Man Church to have sex with a girl, he's immediately put off when he realizes how insane the cult really is. He is able to clearly see that the anti-American conspiracy theory that they propagate is a lie. Furthermore, once he learns that he'd be forced to marry the girl with whom he'd have sex with, he draws a line and refuses to marry a random girl. Whereas Sugo agrees with the practices of the Chainsaw Man church, Denji clearly sees the unethical behavior of the church and refuses to abide by it. When Barem arrives and suggests killing Asa Mitaka so he can be Chainsaw Man again, this is enough for Denji to leave in disgust, declaring the Chainsaw Man Church to be a crazy place.
Also, Denji has started to struggle with having a normal life since he has come to like transforming and being Chainsaw Man due to the attention and popularity he receives. When Hirofumi Yoshida forced him to make a choice of having a normal life with Nayuta or being Chainsaw Man but it would mean getting Nayuta killed, Denji chose to have both of them, and while he ultimately obeys and starts a normal life without transforming, he slowly begins to feel bored and wonders if he'll be able to maintain that life with the same routine every day for the rest of his life. As he becomes increasingly jaded to living a normal life with constrictions on his personal freedom, his home burns down and his pets murdered due to the machinations of Barem, which finally pushes him over the edge. He subsequently ignores Nayuta's pleas to run away with her and feels glad to be Chainsaw Man again despite the horrific circumstances that led to it happening. He also expresses immense disgust at himself when he tries coping with the emotional turmoil that he feels over Nayuta's disappearance and the loss of his pets by trying to seek sexual gratification at a brothel, fully realizing that he constantly allows his base desires to supercede his priorities.
Denji's constant repeats of making mistakes and getting traumatized has caused him a great deal of neverending misery. This addictive habit has also caused him to notably regress in development, to the point of giving in to his own sexual desires instead of focusing on what he has at the moment. Pochita even notes that ever since Denji became Chainsaw Man, he was never truly satisfied with his life even with the better moments he experienced. To those ends, Pochita creates a new reality where he never existed. In this new reality, Denji is notably more mature and subdued due to not being dragged down by the traumas carried by his Chainsaw Man persona but still retains a strong desire to chase his dreams.
Abilities
Being regarded as the Devil that Devils fear the most, the Chainsaw Devil is considered one of the most powerful entities in the series after the Primordial Devils and the Four Horsemen, being able to fend off hordes of Devils in Hell unscathed. The hunt for his heart alone was enough to cause an international conflict, and even Makima, one of the Four Horsemen, considered herself inferior to him, needing the public's adoration to weaken and defeat him. Per the Death Devil's plan, she empowered the Chainsaw Devil along with Yoru, as such, he exhibits a significant power boost.
As a Devil, the Chainsaw Devil possesses all of the standard Devil abilities. These include the ability to make contracts with humans, restore his health by consuming blood and revival into hell after his death. However, unlike most of the Devils, certain aspects of his personality have never changed. No matter how many times he was killed, he would always come back to killing other Devils.
His first contract with Denji was that, in exchange for consuming his blood, Pochita assists him to pay his debts. It is confirmed later on as a real contract rather than the "promise" presented by a young Denji. Later on, after Denji is fatally injured by the Zombie Devil, Pochita became the heart of Denji in exchange for Denji living a "normal life."
Physical Prowess Enhanced Human Condition: Due to fusing with Pochita, Denji gained superhuman abilities even when not transformed. In his human form, Denji is durable enough to survive being hit by Power with a hammer and getting squeezed by the Bat Devil, despite both individuals possessing immense strength.[14][15] He is also very strong, capable of decapitating a Fiend with just one swing of his Axe.[16]
Enhanced Endurance: Due to his rough childhood, Denji has developed a high tolerance for pain and stress, being able to still function as a Devil Hunter for the Yakuza despite having multiple of his organs missing at the time. His mental fortitude has allowed him to fight for three days straight while constantly being injured and remaining conscious even after having multiple parts of his body cut or blown off.[17]
Hybrid Powers Hybrid Transformation: By pulling on the cord emerging from his chest, Denji can transform into a bloodthirsty Chainsaw Devil.[18] Denji needs blood in order to use his abilities, so if he does not have enough of it in his body, he can not fully transform and will instead enter a pseudo-hybrid form. While Denji still has access to some of his powers in this form, they are considerably weaker and his chainsaws are shorter. If Denji runs out of blood, while already being fully transformed, his chainsaws will automatically retract themselves.[17] While in this form Denji still doesn't posses Pochita's signature ability of Devil erasure which was proven in his fight against the Falling Devil which was eaten by him but neither weakened or erased. During Pochita's battle with Yoru, Denji emerges from Pochita's body and claims that Pochita's strongest Devil powers have combined with his genius brain and thus, Denji transforms into a more powerful form capable of using Pochita's Devil powers.[19] Augmented Strength: After entering his Hybrid form, Denji's physical strength is increased exponentially. He can break walls and kill most Devils with just one punch. On one occasion, he was able to catch a thrown car out of the air without staggering and then throw it back with an equal amount of force[20] and on another occasion, he was capable of lifting a car and then throwing it with enough force to make it explode.[21]
Augmented Durability: While in his Hybrid form, Denji's physical durability is increased to inhuman levels. He can fall from great altitudes and punch Devils through walls, without receiving any injuries. He also has survived a point-blank blast from the Bat Devil that destroyed a building behind him,[22] multiple explosions from Reze, being on fire for extended periods of time and being near the Typhoon Devil's tornado, which has been shown to be strong enough to lift cars. His head and chainsaws are far more durable than the rest of his body, due to being made of metal, and being capable of deflecting bullets.[23]
Augmented Stamina: Denji was capable of fighting the Eternity Devil for approximately three days. As long as Denji continues to drink blood to recover from his injuries, he is essentially a perpetual motion machine.[17]
Chainsaw Manifestation: As part of his transformation Denji grows fully-functional chainsaws from his arms, legs, feet and head. These chainsaws are extremely effective at cutting Devils' flesh, allowing Denji to sever limbs[24] and bifurcate his enemies. They are also very effective at cutting other materials, such as stone and concrete,[25] however they have shown to be incapable of cutting through metal.[26] The chainsaws in his legs and feet are not usually active, however, Denji can employ them just by willing it. Just like the rest of his body, these chainsaws are regenerated every time Denji pulls his cord and fully transforms.
Chainsaw Retraction: If he needs the full use of his arms and legs to do certain tasks while in his Hybrid form, Denji's chainsaws can be retracted into his body, allowing him to perform mundane actions such as grabbing objects.[27] While Denji can willingly retract his chainsaws, they can also be retracted automatically based on his instincts alone.
Chain Entanglement: Denji is able to disconnect his chains from his chainsaws to use them in combat. He can wrap his chains around his opponent's body and then pull them closer to him. Denji can also wrap his chains around objects to cut them, throw them or do both.[25] If Denji's arms get torn off but are still connected to his body, he can still use his chain like body tissue to wrap his enemies around. The chains can also be used as grapple hooks, allowing Denji to wrap them around a target and then pull his body closer to said target.[28]
Chain Grappling: In his combined form, Denji is capable of using the chains connected to his chainsaws as grappling tools even when the limb wielding them has been severed. By extending the chains from a detached arm, he can latch onto surfaces or targets to propel himself away or drag his body across the ground. This is shown when Denji fires a chain from his severed arm to escape while retreating from Yoru.[29]
Devil Transformation: After surrendering his contract with Pochita, Denji transformed into a Full Devil. In this form, Pochita displays incredible speed and strength, easily defeating multiple Hybrid Devils in a matter of seconds. Though he has been shown to have taken damage, and even been incapacitated by being sent to Hell and blasted into Space, these acts merely delayed him for a few minutes before he returned unscathed. His immense power is further highlighted in Hell, where it is implied that he defeated every Devil residing there. Makima stated that he has killed her 26 times in this form. This form seems to lack Denji's personality and awareness, though it has been shown to retain some memories and frequently acts in accordance with them. After being defeated by Makima to save Kobeni and later rescued by Power, Denji transformed back to normal and regained consciousness. During Denji's stay in the world the Aging Devil created he was still transformed into his Full Devil form, thus his stomach was connected to Pochita who was still in the real world, which allowed for Pochita to make Denji barf up people and Devils or for them to escape from his mouth.
Blood Consumption: Denji is able to heal completely from nearly any fatal injury, and in some instances recover from death, so long as he consumes a sufficient amount of blood. After losing his arm to Bat Devil, Denji's arm re-attached itself after he received a blood transfusion.[30] With his fight against Santa Claus, he consumed one of her doll's blood to keep fighting while still being on fire.
Nigh-Immortality: Due to being a Hybrid, Denji is immortal and nearly unkillable. He can survive getting shot, being thrown from buildings and taking all kinds of injuries that would kill most Devils. Even if he dies, as long as someone pulls the cord on his chest, Denji can come back to life in perfect condition. Even after being decapitated, being cursed by the Curse Devil and having most of his body blown up, Denji still managed to come back to life with no lasting damage.
Body Duplication: As a full Devil, he regenerated from just his heart after he ripped Pochita out and threw it from space. After noticing this method of regeneration, he is able to remove Pochita from his body and regenerate it as a separate entity that talked just like Denji, which allowed him to fool Makima, using the rest of Power's blood to seemingly keep himself alive without a heart while the duplicate fought.
Physical Prowess Immense Speed: As noted by Beam, the Chainsaw Devil was renowned for his amazing speed. When fighting Makima and the hybrids, he effortlessly assaulted them before they could even react. He moves almost instantly, making it look like he is teleporting to his opponents. When the Hell Devil was summoned to defeat Chainsaw Man, it couldn't even attack before being effortlessly dismembered. Denji/Pochita were able to react to the Goddes bullet that weighs 2 tons and was traveling from new York to japan in seconds making it almost near lightspeed and The american flag on the moon was summoned by Yoru to stab Denji but he was able to react to it, the speed of the flag had to be 12% the speed of light
Immense Durability: The Chainsaw Devil's body is incredibly tough, being able to survive sonic lashes, explosions, piercing attacks, massive concussive blasts capable of sending him into space and atmospheric entry burns with little to no major repercussions. He was also able to survive the onslaught of Makima's Thousand Year Spear attack, even when weakened by public adoration, though he was in critical condition thereafter. He was able to survive several hits from the Oregon sword and a hit from the goddess bullet which had the kinetic energy of 13.8 gigatons of Tnt
Immense Strength: As stated by Pochita himself, when he was Chainsaw Man, he was so strong that he couldn't do basic social interactions like receiving or giving a hug. This is even more highlighted on his visit to the Family Burger Restaurant, where even small movements of his arms were enough to kill several locals, probably accidentally. To avoid unintentionally injuring Kobeni Higashiyama with his force, he had to carry her using his intestine scarf. Later, while fighting the hybrids, his attack on Quanxi and Miri Sugo was so powerful that it destroyed several buildings and effortlessly decapitated both of them. Denji was able to overpower the Oregon sword, a sword made out of the entire land mass of Oregon
Immense Healing Factor: As a full Devil, Pochita's regenerative abilities are enhanced to the point that he completely regenerated his body from just his heart after throwing it from space without needing blood, even when suffering intense atmospheric entry burns.[7] Later on, this ability of Pochita was used cleverly by Denji that he removed Pochita from his body by leaving his body without a heart and let Pochita regenerate completely to mimic Denji and fool Makima.
Immense Hearing: The Chainsaw Devil is capable of hearing people from extremely far away distances, as shown when he complied to Makima's order to come at her and heard Kobeni's pleads for help while the latter was in the Family Burger Restaurant.
Devil Powers
Devil Erasure: The Chainsaw Devil is infamously able to consume other Devils, causing the "name" they represent to vanish from public consciousness while also erasing their physical existence. Barem Bridge speculates that chainsaws may have had many different uses originally, but Chainsaw Man repeatedly consuming Devils and erasing their related concepts eventually left the chainsaws' only use to cut down trees, with Pochita's concept erasure being a remnant of that.[15] Kishibe was unable to recall historical events or things such as the Holocaust, Nazis or nuclear weapons, meaning that the Chainsaw Devil at some point consumed their respective Devils.[12] When used on himself, Pochita's erasure ability can not only create a new world where he never existed like that of a reset, but also causing the existence of Chainsaw Man to cease.[16][17]
The Devil does not need to be fully consumed for the concept to be completely erased from existence as there were multiple cases shown that devouring the Devil's head was enough to achieve this effect. When an erasure happens, any object, creature or phenomena associated with the concept ceases to exist, as well as memories of it - however, the world immediately "adapts" to this absence, as if the concept had never existed. Furthermore it seems to take the path of least resistance, for example when the Ear Devil was erased, all animals lost their ears, but objects related to the sense of hearing, such as phones, ear picks and radios, were recontextualized rather than destroyed. It appears that certain concepts erased by Pochita can be brought back into existence if the components of the original concept still exist: atomic bombs were recreated by the United States despite Pochita consuming the Nuclear Weapons Devil since the radioactive components and the armaments to craft the nuclear weapons still exist.[18] This demonstrates a potential limit to Pochita's powers.
The erasure process can also be partial: after the War Devil was partially devoured, the concept of "war" has remained, but no more wars have broken out in the human world.[19] Powerful attacks can force Pochita to vomit the devils he consumed and restore their concepts to existence.[20][21] Pochita can choose which consumed devils he vomits back up, as seen when he vomited the Snow Devil and Bitterness Devil to make Denji remember the concepts when he was at his lowest point.[22][23] It is unclear whether Pochita can voluntarily regurgitate all the devils he has ever consumed, or if he can only do this for devils he has recently devoured. As shown with the recreation of Nuclear Weapons by the United States of America, it is possible to revive or recreate the concepts that he devours from scratch, reviving the fear that the masses have towards them and possibly reviving the Devils that he had devoured that embodied those concepts.[24] Unlike everyone else, Pochita does not seem to forget the devils that he erased.
Chainsaw Appendage: As an embodiment of fear of chainsaws, protruding from Pochita's head is a chainsaw shaped appendage that functions as an actual chainsaw.[1] This ability is activated when the cord in his tail is pulled. As a full Devil, besides his head, he has four arms with chainsaw appendages. He can also generate chainsaws from his legs.
Chain Entanglement: Pochita is able to disconnect his chains from his chainsaws to wrap around his opponent's body. He uses this to pull them closer to him. He's able to capture multiple opponents with it. Beam claimed that the Chainsaw Devil could use his chains to hook around buildings to move around quickly in the past, but this has yet to be seen currently.
Devil Transformation: Should Denji's contract with Pochita ever be broken, Pochita can possess Denji's body and return to his original form. Makima stated that he has killed her 26 times in this state. The form seems to be under the control of Pochita as it is shown that he remembers Denji's dreams and tries to fulfill the requirements of their contract by eating a hamburger and going on a date with a girl. After being defeated by Makima to save Kobeni Higashiyama and later being rescued by Power, Denji's contract was restored and Pochita reverted back to his heart form while Denji transformed back into his normal hybrid. Pochita still can transform into his Devil form if Denji removes the heart from his body, in this form, Pochita has retain a calmer personality and has two arms similar to Denji's hybrid form, however his arms are still covered with an armor. During Pochita's battle with Yoru, Denji emerges from Pochita's body and claims that Pochita's strongest Devil powers have combined with his genius brain and thus, Denji transforms into a more powerful form capable of using Pochita's Devil powers.[26]
Skillset Hand-to-Hand Combat: Even without his transformation, Denji is a capable unarmed and armed fighter. Against the Leech Devil - which was many times his size and weight - he was able to easily block her blows, whilst delivering punches and headbutts with enough force to damage her.[31] His skills improved further after training with Kishibe, in which he learnt to rely more on strategy instead of blind-strength.
Strategic Intelligence: Despite never receiving a proper education, Denji is very perceptive when it comes to ascertaining his enemies' weaknesses and how to exploit them. Denji was trained under Kishibe, who he refers to as "master" later on in the story, who teaches him various strategies. This is shown in the fight against Katana Man where Denji deceives Katana Man by making him think that Denji can only manifest chainsaws in his arms. Denji also managed to incapacitate Reze by using her weakness against water and defeat Santa Claus by abusing her weakness towards fire and light. In the time between Parts 1 and 2 Denji has continued developing his skills, such as learning to use his neck cables to reattach his head and legs after being dismembered and learning to resist mental attacks by damaging his own brain with his chainsaws as seen in the fight against the Falling Devil.
Weaknesses Anemia/Low Blood Amount: Despite being turned into a Devil Hybrid, Denji will suffer from anemia when he was fatally injured by either a shallow cut or a heavy blow, which weakens his transformation into Chainsaw Man. To counteract this, Denji must consume a copious amount of blood to refill his strength.
Description of Yuji
Appearance Yuji is a young man of average height and appears to have a slender build when wearing baggy clothing, but actually has a lean and muscular physique. He also has relatively large light brown eyes and spiky pink hair (brownish blonde in the manga) that's styled in an undercut fashion. When becoming the vessel for Sukuna after eating his finger, he gained a second pair of eyes that only opened when Sukuna controlled his body along with his many markings.
At the start of the series, Yuji wore a light-colored hooded jacket, high-cuffed black pants, and white shoes. However, in the anime, his pants were denim, and his shoes were bright red. When Yuji enrolled in Tokyo Jujutsu High, he began wearing his version of the uniform; a black long sleeve shirt resembling a gakuran over a red hoodie, black pants, and red shoes.
He gains a noticeable scar between his two eyes and a smaller scar on his left labial commissure of the mouth during the Shibuya Incident. Both scars were caused by Mahito; the first one was inflicted when the cursed spirit surprise-attacked him with a blade on his fist,[4] and the second one was inflicted when Yuji battled him after his transformation.[5]
He lost the second pair of eyes that only open when Sukuna controls his body along with his many markings after the latter transferred to Megumi as his new vessel.[6] Yuji also lost his left pinky finger when Sukuna ripped off and fed it to Megumi.[7] Yuji later lost his left ring finger so Yuta Okkotsu could copy Sukuna's technique.
Personality Yuji is a fair person who truly cares for not only his comrades but anyone he views as people with their own wills, despite how deep or shallow his connection to them is. He highly commends "the value of life," and to this end, he will ensure that others receive a "proper death". Because of this, he believes that it is morally unethical for him to take another human life, and tries to avoid any possibility of doing so unless as a last resort.
He is also not without his more energetic and outgoing traits. Such as his frequent comedic moments where he was seen alongside Nobara gushing about Tokyo and his eagerness to train with Satoru Gojo or even when entertaining both Junpei Yoshino and his mother. Yuji is also highly passionate whenever he's focused on achieving certain goals and being quite stubborn when confronted about them, such as when Masamichi Yaga questioned why Yuji wanted to become a sorcerer. He is also quite naïve due to his inexperience in the world of cursed spirits and jujutsu sorcerers, but is shown to be a quick learner, capable of adapting to his surroundings and picking up how to use cursed energy quickly.
Although usually composed, good-natured and friendly, Yuji can be angered quickly in the face of pure malice after witnessing firsthand the cruelty that curses were capable of, particularly Mahito's inhuman exploitation of Junpei. Yuji felt so profoundly disgusted that he felt a genuine desire to kill for the first time in his life and has a very intense yet focused hatred towards the cursed spirit.
One of Yuji's defining traits is his willingness to sacrifice himself for others, triggered by his grandfather's last words to him to die surrounded by others. When he and Megumi were under the threat of being killed by a curse, Yuji impulsively swallowed Sukuna's finger to exorcise the curse and save them despite having met Megumi for the first time on that day.
However, Yuji's initial belief's on the value of a life as well as "proper deaths" have been greatly challenged overtime, primarily during the Shibuya Incident. When Sukuna took possession of Yuji's body after forced consumption of his fingers, he proceeded to massacre countless innocents within the city save for Megumi, leaving Yuji traumatized from the event, wishing he was dead and blaming himself for all the deaths. This would only worsen as Yuji later witnessed Mahito kill Kento Nanami and mortally wound Nobara, making Yuji lose hope in being able to save anyone, before Aoi Todo's intervention. Eventually after a grueling battle between Mahito, Yuji spoke to the curse spirit admitting that they were alike in a way while also declaring pure and utter hatred for the latter, promising to kill Mahito: no matter how much time passed or how many times he is reborn, again and again with no need to justify his actions as anything but his nature, believing that some reasoning for his actions would eventually be found centuries after his own death.
Following the incident in Shibuya, Yuji's disposition grew more solemn than before, as well as developing a changed ideology; that his purpose was to be a "cog" in the machine that functions to exorcise curses.[9] While still wanting to save and help people, Yuji was racked with unshakable guilt and felt that he deserved death, to the point he would even willingly take blame for the crimes committed by Sukuna when prompted by an enemy, only slightly relenting when speaking with Hiromi Higuruma. While Yuji still retained most of his traits of being good-natured and friendly, he would act closed off and abrasive towards someone unfamiliar as seen with Hana Kurusu, admitting that this behavior stemmed from fear of the latter replacing Nobara before apologizing later.
Yuji's deep seated and focused hatred returned when Sukuna enacted on a plan to transfer his soul into Megumi, taking full possession of his friend's body. Yuji fought furiously against the King of Curses but to avail as he escaped off, with Yuji vowing that he'd "eat anything in order to kill Sukuna" as well as freeing Megumi. This would span into a month long preparation where Yuji trained himself to get strong enough to face him, culminating in the raid on the King of Curses.
Despite everything, Yuji felt a sense of pity for Sukuna, to a point where he locked the sorcerer in his domain to wander through his childhood memories. During their conversation, Yuji's ideology changed once more, explaining that he initially believed life was about fulfilling a set role and that dying fulfilling that role would be a proper death. But this was no longer the case to Yuji, who now believed that simply living a mundane life would still produce value in the fragments of memories continuing to exist after death. Yuji further stated that the way someone died did not matter, but rather it was the idea of someone treating those lives as worthless that he could not forgive and that human beings are not tools born with a predetermined role, be it good or bad, and that there is no fundamental answer as to what makes one human, while also reaffirming that if Sukuna will not release Megumi's soul, then he will kill him. Abilities and Powers
Overall Skill Level: Yuji is one of Tokyo Jujutsu High's most powerful and talented students. Satoru Gojo places him on the same level of potential as Yuta Okkotsu and Kinji Hakari, the three students who he believes will surpass his strength.[11] Despite having no connections to the jujutsu world before a few months prior to the Shibuya Incident, Yuji is able to contend with and defeat grade 1 and special grade curses. Yuji was gifted with superhuman physical abilities which he masterfully combines with his cursed energy. Yuji is also able to contain Sukuna with no ill effects, which allows him to perceive the shape of souls. This enables him to harm Mahito, whose control over the shape of his soul otherwise renders him immune to injury. During his one month training for the final battle against Sukuna became almost as strong as his special grade students like Yuta, Hakari and Maki and during the fight after landing a black flash he awaken and became stronger. 68 years after Sukuna's defeat Yuji has become the strongest sorcerer in history stronger than Gojo and Sukuna after training and becoming a death painting womb
Poison Resistance: Since Yuji became Sukuna's vessel by ingesting one of his fingers, which is considered lethal poison,[13] he has a resistance to all kinds of poison. Yuji will feel the pain from the poison, but he is mostly unaffected. This ability was first demonstrated during his fight with Junpei Yoshino when he could resist Moon Dregs' poison.[14] It was demonstrated again when Yuji resisted the effects of Eso and Kechizu's Decay.
Physical Prowess Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Yuji is one of the greatest, if not the greatest practitioner of martial arts in the series. His fighting prowess goes toe to toe with Aoi Todo, another extremely proficient martial artist. Yuji can effortlessly defeat a grade 2 cursed spirit, and challenge special grade curses purely using martial arts and infusing his style with cursed energy. Yuji also possesses an impressive control over his attacks, being able to pause his punch a moment before impact and adjust his power into several counter blows.
Yuji's fighting style is usually depicted as being very acrobatic with his movements, allowing him to strike his opponent in several different angles which also allow him to evade several oncoming attacks, essentially giving him great offensive and defensive capabilities. If the initial strike he is going for has been blocked, he is able to use high flying kicks, unorthodox punches, and even a knee strike to retaliate. He is also skilled in a martial arts style known as Taido Martial Arts, which grants him the ability to perform Knee Release, an ancient martial arts technique that eliminates starting movements and allows Yuji to release his knees, hips, and shoulders to guide him to his opponent's feet instead of falling down.
By combining the technique mentioned above with Taido Martial Arts, Yuji can perform Manji Kick, where he uses the momentum to throw his right leg upwards and land a kick to his opponent's head. By adding cursed energy to this attack, it can harm cursed spirits. 68 years later he has only become better at hand to hand combat
Immense Strength: Yuji is quite powerful even without the usage of cursed energy, as he can destroy walls with ease,[16] throw a lead ball with enough force to bend a soccer goalpost,[17] and even throw a car.[18] As powerful as he is without cursed energy, especially when it comes to fighting, his exceptional strength can often be augmented to further levels with the usage of cursed energy, the Divergent Fist technique, and Black Flash, allowing him to exorcise cursed spirits. His unique strength has also been compared to Kento Nanami, a grade 1 sorcerer. He can even harm Hanami and Choso, two curses who have remarkable durability and toughness with the former being near-impossible to damage. During his fight with Sukuna, Yuji jumped 20 stories from two buildings to reach Sukuna after the latter took control over Megumi's body. Also in his fight with Sukuna, Yuji was able to kick a massive chunk of rubble towards Sukuna, momentarily stopping him. After 68 years he has only become stronger
Immense Speed and Reflexes: Yuji is shown to have great speed and can finish a 50-meter track within 3 seconds, implying he can run at speeds of 60.02 km/h (37.3 mph).[19] He's also been shown to dodge the attacks of all five opposing sorcerers from the students from Kyoto Jujutsu High who tried to murder him. He is fast enough to evade Choso's Piercing Blood, which travels at the speed of sound, proving he has superb reflexes. During Yuji and Maki's fight against Sukuna while possessing Megumi, Yuji was able to keep up with their magnificent speed and reflexes despite being grievously wounded from his previous battle. After 68 years he has only became stronger
Immense Durability: Yuji's durability surpasses the average sorcerer. He was able to continuously take hits from Choso during their fight and even Piercing Blood, an attack moving at the speed of sound didn't pierce Yuji immediately. He was also able to withstand numerous attacks from Mahito in his Instant Spirit Body of Distorted Killing form and continue fighting. After Sukuna took control over Megumi's body, he punched Yuji through multiple buildings and Yuji survived that, and afterwards was able to fight him and even survive Sukuna relentlessly attacking him with Dismantle and keep fighting him with Maki's help.
Immense Stamina: Fitting his other superhuman capabilities, Yuji possesses a large amount of stamina and has often been shown continuing to fight despite grievous injuries for longer periods of time without rest, such as having his hand severed and his fingers disintegrated when battling the Finger Bearer, allowing for Megumi to escape with Nobara. He was also able to resist several poisonous stab wounds from when he tried to stop Junpei from hurting anyone at his school. His incredible stamina is especially shown afterwards when he sustained grievous injuries from Mahito but was able to continue attacking.
Intelligence Proficient Learner: Yuji is a curious person and an earnest student. He is also good at progressing - being quick at Gojo's Watching Movies Training, and realizing Todo's advice quickly. According to Akutami, he is the best at cooking among the first years trio. He was able to master using martial arts alongside cursed energy and honed it to a level with which he can take on special grade curses. He was even able to use Black Flash four times in a row a short time after he had even learnt of its existence.
Another testament to his development was his growing understanding of cursed energy within just a month prior to his battle against Sukuna. Through two sessions of replacement training with Atsuya Kusakabe and Yuta Okkotsu, aside from drastically improving his cursed energy reinforcement, Yuji managed to grasp the complex nature of reverse cursed technique and learned how to use and perform it efficiently to heal himself
Cursed Energy
Cursed Energy Capacity: Yuji's cursed energy originates from the parts of the special grade cursed object, Ryomen Sukuna. He didn't have an innate technique initially, but he showed great proficiency with learning how to control cursed energy. Even after Sukuna left his body, Yuji retained an immense cursed energy pool, having continuously used cursed energy to reinforce his body and perform various cursed techniques throughout the raid against Sukuna while showing no signs of exhaustion until after using his Domain Expansion, which requires and expends a massive amount of cursed energy.
Cursed Energy Manipulation: Having been thrust into the jujutsu world without any prior knowledge about jujutsu, Yuji initially struggled to draw out or manipulate his cursed energy, being unable to attack curses without a cursed tool. Thanks to the various training regimens he underwent and having experienced Black Flash, Yuji better grasped the nature of cursed energy. By the time he had his rematch with Mahito during the Shibuya Incident, Yuji managed to land a Black Flash with maximum cursed energy, displaying the ability to use it seemingly at will, a feat said to be impossible for even Satoru Gojo.
After the Shibuya Incident, Yuji has added much greater finesse onto his cursed energy manipulation, combining cursed energy and superhuman physical abilities, with Choso describing him as a "demon god".[20] In the month before fighting Sukuna, through replacement training with Kusakabe and Yuta,[21] Yuji improved his cursed energy reinforcement and learned how to perform reverse cursed technique.
Cursed Energy Reinforcement: Yuji primarily uses cursed energy combined with his martial arts skills and superhuman strength to reinforce his strikes, increasing their impact and allowing him to hurt curses. After undergoing replacement training with Kusakabe, Yuji's cursed energy reinforcement is improved, enabling him to withstand Sukuna's slashes without substantial damage.
Divergent Fist (逕けい庭てい拳けん Keitei Ken?): After Yuji lands a punch on a target, his cursed energy flows after the strike and makes a stronger second impact. Divergent Fist was initially used when Yuji didn't have good control over his cursed energy, causing it to lag behind his attacks due to his superhuman speed.[22] During Yuji's fight with Todo in the Goodwill Event, the Kyoto third-year critiqued this attack and taught the first-year how to apply cursed energy at the exact moment his strikes hit by improving his understanding of how to flow cursed energy.[23] Since his fight with Choso, Yuji learned to use Divergent Fist at will, exploiting the delayed second impact's effect to confuse his opponents, leaving them open for his next attack.[24]
Black Flash (黒こく閃せん Kokusen?): A phenomenon that occurs when the user applies cursed energy within 0.000001 seconds of a physical hit, creating a spatial distortion that causes their cursed energy to flash black and amplifies the destructive power of the strike to the power of 2.5. Yuji is capable of performing Black Flash seven times in a row and has used it a total of nineteen times. 68 years later Yuji learned he was chosen by the black sparks making him hit black flashes more often.
Death Painting Womb Physiology Blood Poisoning: After ingesting the remaining six cursed objects, Yuji's body, including his blood, became similar to that of an incarnated Death Painting Womb.[26] By injecting his blood into others, Yuji can poison them due to the incompatibility of his non-human blood, which can even affect aliens.
Even a small amount of his blood introduced through something as minor as a scratch to the face can immediately cause nausea and vomiting. Higher doses can render a person unconscious after vomiting and induce symptoms resembling a severe case of the flu, though these effects typically subside after a few days of rest.[27]
Blood Conversion: Yuji's similar constitution to that of a Death Painting Womb allows him to convert cursed energy directly into blood. As long as he possesses sufficient cursed energy, he can prevent himself from dying due to blood loss.
This trait also enabled him to learn and utilize reverse cursed technique more easily than most sorcerers. Unlike them, he does not require technical knowledge on how to convert cursed energy into blood, nor does he suffer the massive cursed energy consumption associated with that process.[30] Additionally, he can perform Blood Manipulation extension techniques on a larger and more powerful scale without relying on pre-prepared blood bags.[31]
Curse techniques
Blood Manipulation (赤せっ血けつ操そう術じゅつ Sekketsu Sōjutsu?): After absorbing Cursed Womb: Death Painting No. 4-9, Yuji was engraved with Blood Manipulation, the inherited technique of the Kamo Clan.[26] Using this innate technique, Yuji can manipulate his own blood.
Convergence (百びゃく斂れん Byakuren?): An extension technique that compresses and condenses the user's blood to its absolute limit with cursed energy. The blood orb created by this technique is required for using Piercing Blood and Supernova. 68 years later, Yuji has learned how to properly perform Convergence, and is able to compress large amounts of blood into a single orb.
Piercing Blood (穿せん血けつ Senketsu?): After using Convergence, the user clasps their hands around the blood orb and fires a blood beam that travels at the speed of sound. Yuji used this technique against Sukuna during their fight, damaging his face. 68 years later, Yuji has mastered this technique and is able to perform a variant of it, firing multiple homing beams of blood instead of a single shot.
Shrine (御み廚づ子し Mizushi?): After landing a Black Flash against Sukuna, the awakened state brought forth by the phenomenon drew out Sukuna's own cursed technique that was engraved in Yuji, albeit with some differences. Unlike Sukuna, Yuji creates dashed lines with scissors on anything he touches that are subsequently cut along those lines. 68 years later, Yuji has only became more skilled using shrine even more then Ryomen Sukuna
Dismantle (解カイ Kai?): A slashing attack that can be used through touch or at range against cursed spirits and sorcerers to great effectiveness. 68 years later, Yuji mastered Shrine and could launch Dismantle at range and with high output, capable of exorcising a horde of cursed spirits and destroyed several city blocks with one giant flying slash, and dicing apart his opponent and surroundings with countless imperceivable slashes.
Divine Flame (竈カミノ Kamino?):[95] Yuji can create and manipulate blue fire for long-range attacks by chanting "Open" (開フーガ Fūga?)[96][97] and forming an arrow just like Sukuna. This technique can also only be used after he performs Dismantle and Cleave. The firepower of these flames far exceed Jogo's, a special grade curse whose defining trait involves extremely destructive pyrokinetic powers and even surpasses Sukuna's flames in heat and power. Yuji uses this as a last resort most of the time.
Reverse Cursed Technique (反はん転てん術じゅつ式しき Hanten Jutsushiki?): Within the month before his battle against Sukuna, Yuji learned how to use reverse cursed technique to heal himself. Using reverse cursed technique, he regenerated his body after suffering a Cleave from Sukuna.[43] He later used it to heal the wounds he received from two of Sukuna's Dismantle slashes,[44] and continuously used it throughout the battle whenever he was damaged.
New Shadow Style: Simple Domain (シン・陰かげ流りゅう「簡かん易い領りょう域いき」 Shin Kageryū: Kan'i Ryōiki?): An anti-domain technique Yuji learned by switching souls with Atsuya Kusakabe.[45] It is used to disable a domain's guaranteed-hit effect by neutralizing its barrier. Yuji activated it in response to Sukuna's impromptu Malevolent Shrine, allowing him to resist its slashes for almost 99 seconds before finally crumbling.
Domain expansion
Benevolent Shrine: Due to his replacement training with Kusakabe, Yuji learned the basics of barrier techniques, allowing him to cast domain expansion.[47] Yuji's Domain Expansion perfectly recreates his hometown, including landmarks familiar to him such as a local statue, a park that he played in, a department store, a farm he visited, etc.. It can even create animals such as crayfish, horses, and geese. The sure-hit effect of this domain attacks Yuji's targets with his soul-rending Dismantle and cleaves. 68 years later his domain skills have only improved
