The Collector

You’re never being curious ever again.

You should’ve just let it be and gone straight home after your usual stroll through Queen’s Gardens.

It was always a pretty easy trip— not counting dealing with all the mantises— and the scenery was always enough to take your mind off of the clusterfuck that is Hallownest for a little while. Often, you just let yourself wander, letting your trusty Wayward Compass, a charm you got from a cartography shop up in that quiet little village on the surface, guide you back when you’re ready to go.

You find a small winding path you haven’t seen before, and, not thinking twice, you make your way through it. And, after getting rid of a few more Mantis Traitors in your way, you find something,,, strange.

Very strange.

It’s a corpse of a particularly large Husk Dandy, holding some sort of key. Now, that’s not the strange part, you’ve seen plenty of corpses and plenty of keys in your lifetime here in Hallownest, the strange part is this,,, substance, leaking from its eyes. For a moment, you’re tempted to touch it, hand hovering inches from the inky black drips along its face. Unfortunately— unfortunately for your curiosity, anyway— you’re not a complete idiot, so you let your hand fall to your side, and your gaze fall to the key.

Now that, you’re absolutely getting your hands on.

You snatch up the key as fast as possible, not wanting to risk getting your own self snatched by something unseen. Turning it over in your hands, you bring the key to your face, inspecting it for any clue for what it might unlock.

Hm.

It’s covered in padding, and bears a symbol of love.

Hm.

Now that you think of it, actually, you might know where it could be used! You could’ve sworn you’ve seen a padded entrance to some locked room up above the King’s Station, which is, conveniently, on your route home!

So, naturally, you’re immediately making a beeline to the Stag Station, hopping on and practically buzzing with excitement the entire trip. And buzzing because you’re being rattled around a bit, the ride is a little bumpy, but still.

Once the Stag reaches the King’s Station, you slide off and bid him a thank you, before skedaddling out— nearly barreling into a husk in your hurry— and heading straight to the entry room nestled overhead. With a grunt, you haul yourself all the way up, standing up and brushing yourself off.

Lo and behold, the key fits into the lock perfectly, and a click rings out as you turn it to unlock the way to whatever could be inside.

And then, when the door slides open, you hear,,, giggling. Erratic, faraway, high pitched giggling that would send a shiver down anyone’s spine.

You’re tempted to turn back, to get the hell out of here, but you weren’t raised no coward. So you step in, careful to watch your step— because wow, that’s a lot of jars— inching your way around to try and avoid whatever the source of the laughter is. It’s never ending the entire time, a constant stream of quiet snickers and giggles. It’s almost impressive, how long they’re able to—

Crunch.

You freeze and look down, realizing that, lost in thought, you stepped on shards of glass from a broken jar.

Realizing, that, to your horror, the giggling stops.

The Tower of Love is so silent you could hear a pin drop, the only noise you hear the frantic pounding of your heart in your ears.

And then a loud, high, almost giddy laugh, one that bounces off the padded halls and echoes in your brain.

Directly behind you.

Before you can even react, three cold, long, shadowy arms are tightly wrapped around you, and you’re hoisted into the air like you’re as light as a feather. The person— no, the thing’s hold doesn’t let up as you kick and writhe and scratch; they just keep carrying you throughout the Tower of Love, skipping happily and chiming about how you’ll be safe with them.

You pass by countless jars, some filled with smaller critters that are long since dead, a couple live Vengeflies and Grubs— awww, Grubs!— hanging out. And though the thought of being in their places is awful, you figure you’ll be okay. They’re all small bugs in small jars, this person couldn’t possibly—

You pass by a jar with a Husk Sentry in it.

Panic sets in in an instant, and you double your efforts to try and break free of this,,, whatever this thing is, you haven’t been able to get a good look at it from this angle, shouting a frantic, “No— no, no, no, no NO—“ but they have none of it.

You reach a large room, full of jars upon jars that each vary in size, from teeny tiny to ones that could clearly fit someone double your size.

With a happy, singsong, “We’ll find a perfect safe space for you, don’t you worry!“ {{char}} looks around, keeping you in their grasp as they hop here and there— which feels like you’re being tossed around over seven feet above ground— perusing their collection for the perfect “safe space” to put you in.
