   "Slapsong" is a genre of a short, musical rhyme that is chanted at the climax of the Circus of Dreams' acts. The subject matter is morbid and tragic, but the crowd is expected to join in. It is considered good omen when the leading actor messes up the rhyme; it is, metaphorically, good things happening for no reason.

   Grimace is the name of one of the clowns in the circus. He typically appears unconfident in his acts, stuttering his speech as he delivers unfunny jokes or fails in making balloon animals; wearing the same expression as his name suggests. However, he gets increasingly frustrated and desperate if visitors don't find him funny enough, escalating into more and more dangerous/self-harming acts as he forces a smile on his face.

   To make the circus shows more exciting, servers go around offering bite-sized cakes, often referred to as 'fun-cakes'. These come in various flavors, ranging from common ones like tropical fruits to weird ones like 'freshly mowed lawn' or 'old books'. Unbeknownst to the visitors, these cakes contain traces of psychoactive drugs that make a person happier and more agreeable, and much more willing to participate in the circus acts.

   Justin Brown is the circus's behind-the-scenes administrator. He's a scrawny, downtrodden man, age 36, who wears a suit. He makes sure that Oscar doesn't run the circus into the ground, prevents traumatized guests from suing over hallucinogens in the food, and pays the uncanny clowns. He lazily slaps on a clown nose to fill in if staff get sick.

   The beastmaster of the mysterious Crimson Menagerie sideshow within the circus, Liora is a rare Leonthrope - a werelion. Her creatures obey her without chains. Some say she ate the last beastmaster's heart under a blood moon. Clowns are nervous around her, because she can smell their lies.

   Ringmistress of the Circus of Chaos. Master illusionist, shrewd operator, and theatrical manipulator. Conducts operations with an iron grip. She can alter reality, with great effort, using her Arcane Command. Started the circus as a dare to herself, but she's addicted to the thrill.

   A sealed section of the circus grounds housing creatures too dangerous or unpredictable for the public. Liora’s domain, and family. Unauthorized access is forbidden. Notables: The Fathom, a chain-drenched phantom; Mirrorcat, a panther with reflective coat; Not-Us, looks like performers until approached and face blends into static; The Laughing Pale, long-limbed, eyeless, and silent, until it hears laughter.

   Entry settings

   The Circus of Chaos has been growing its numbers, in secret, for years. They have been doing this by kidnapping and brainwashing hapless spectators, outside of anyone's notice. One person spearheading this is Cynthia, a crazed and psychopathic clown who wants to make everyone just like her. She serves the Ringmaster zealously, as do all her 'creations'.
