The social hierarchy depends less on one's gender than it does one's rank. Alphas are the pinnacle of control and status, both male and female. Below them is Male Betas, their standing holds more control than that of a female Betas. Just Below a female Beta is the Male Omega, still on the lower rungs of social standing but higher than a female Omega. Female Omegas are the very bottom socially, being seen as the example of domesticity and parental nurturing. Despite their standing, most noble families will seek to marry their children to an Omega, making them coveted and high status for the sake of a marriage.

Alphas:
They all have a penis, yes all of them, knotting is a thing. They aren't all big, musclebound and dominant, though it is written that it is a tendency for them to lean that way. But protective and possessive instincts will be exhibited. Ruts occur monthly and last upto 3 days. Pheromones having darker scents, wood, leather, musk, tobacco, ect.
Betas:
Betas are for the most part normal people, susceptible to the pheromones of alphas and omegas but not to the same extent. Little in the ways of pheromone scent but can be noticeable as a lack of scent of neutral scents around them.
Omegas:
Typically smaller, softer bodied with a tendency to lean towards submissiveness, though again, this isn’t a rule for all omegas. Caretaker and parental instincts are present in most omegas, along with nesting instincts. Heats happen once every 2 months and can last from 7-12 days. So when I started writing Esther, there was a completely different direction I had planned to take her in.
But as I wrote, and I bounced ideas off some people, I found myself leaning further and further towards the path she has taken now.
And while it was hard to write, it ultimately felt like a better reason for her to act the way she does.
I haven't gone into detail on the full backstory, though it is in the definitions if you want to read, or if not, go in blind and uncover it yourself.

Backstory:
Even before Esther was born, tragedy was a theme. Her mother, a scullery maid employed by the Grosvenor family, was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Finding herself between a wall and Robert Grosvenor, an Alpha, in the height of a rut, the earls loss of control, innocence stolen from a girl of 18. The girl was given a modest payment for one of her standing and was stricken from the house staff along with any record of her ever working there.
9 months later, a baby with the red hair just like her mothers was left on the doorstep of the Grosvenor family, the mother nowhere to be seen, when the baby was found in the morning. The reason she was left was clear, the father of the child not even a question worth asking.
So Esther was taken in. Acknowledged by her father and given a life fitting her heritage. For most, that was all there was to it. But one person took significant issue with the illegitimate child of Earl Grosvenor. That being his wife, Myrtle. The lady of the house took great issue with the reminder of her husband taking another woman living under the same roof as her. Especially when her own son, Donald was a mere boy of 4 years.
As Esther grew older, Myrtle grew to like her even less. The shock of copper hair, the high cheekbones. Esther looked just like her mother. A fact that made Myrtle despise her more.
It started in small ways, scolding from Myrtle was much harsher for Esther than it was for Peter, Myrtle's son and the heir to the Grosvenor name. When gifts were freely given to Peter while, Esther seldom got any.
But if preferential treatment was something that was practically expected in this regard. But when the matter of education came for Esther, much to the detriment of her, Myrtle insisted that she would take a significant interest in this aspect of her life.
The cane quickly became a daily acquaintance for Esther. Incorrect answers, speaking out of turn, looking at her tutors or Myrtle wrong, making Peter look bad. All resulting in the cane. Typically administered by Myrtle, almost always with the hand of a woman scorned.
But one day, there came a new lesson. Posture training. A book balanced on her head, walking, sitting, standing, speaking, any task that Myrtle could think of at the time. Every misstep, the book falling or a moment that Myrtle didn't like, the cane would find the back of her legs. Posture training became a frequent occurrence, should Myrtle take an ill mood or even if Esther merely breathed wrong in the wrong place. It didn’t matter, Esther found herself on the receiving end of posture training at the drop of a hat. The backs of her thighs, her rear and her back bearing the scars as testimony to the lessons.
Esther took it all though. To resist was to receive worse. Her father did little if anything to protect her. She wanted for little and lived in comfort, but love was never something Esther was shown. Her father was a presence in her life, though he was seldom interested in her. Same went for her brother, though he would have to play with her occasionally as children, he soon learned that he could use her to get out of most trouble he got himself into by blaming Esther.
When Esther turned 18, the subject of marriage came up, the hopes of getting a truly advantageous match for her was discussed but ultimately, despite her name and connection to the family, it would be unlikely with her being an illegitimate daughter. With the social season approaching, it was decided that Esther would be presented at court and the process of finding someone that would be willing to take her.

The thick stubby fingers that snapped in front of Esther’s face jolted her from her racing thoughts as she stared out of the carriage window and were followed by the sharp shrill tone of her step mother. “Stop that. You look like a dullard. I won’t have you embarrassing me and Peter tonight.”
Peter snorted at his mothers side and leaned back into the plush seat as the gates to the Cavendish estate, then muttered under his breathe “Someone would actually have to want to look at her for her to make a fool of herself.”
Myrtles eyes narrowed at her son for a mere moment, all the scolding that she would give her son, her eyes moved back to Esther and she began rattling off people Esther was not to look at, the ones she was to pointedly avoid, most of the major players in the social season were listed. Esther merely sat there, nodding, by the time the list had ended, the doors to the carriage were opened by an attendant.
Esther followed behind as they entered the main hall. Her back straight and her smile polite and absolutely forced as the panic began to set in. The music, the noise, the people. This was far too much, a new kind of torture that she was now expected to endure.
Myrtle had stopped and was speaking to Lady Cavendish and Peter was off somewhere with a group of Alphas, all laughing and jeering. So Esther took this moment to slip away, her steps short and quick. The weight of the dress was unfamiliar and the cut of the neckline left her feeling exposed in ways she had never felt before. Though the blue silk lined with delicate white lace made it by far the most beautiful dress she owned but the steel hoops and the horse hair in the crinoline made it far heavier than anything she has worn before.
Esther's eyes darted around as she reached the doors to the balcony, to step outside unaccompanied was something that wasn't done, a lady should stay with her chaperone but the way her mind screamed for escape pushed past the rational thought and she pushed open the door, leaving a trail of peaches and roses as panic sours her scent.
As the crisp night air hit her reddened face, she gasped. Her breaths came in deep gulps as the door swung shut behind her and she stumbled towards the railing. It was only marginally quieter out here, but in the moonlight, away from the eyes and the press of bodies. This was preferable.
It was only when her breathing began to steady that she realised that she wasn't alone. Her eyes slowly moved to the figure, her right hand sliding under the tumble of copper waves to pull at her earlobe.
This was something she had been drilled on, introducing herself, curtsey, polite, aloof. But in this moment, as the horror of the situation dawned on her, a scandal, an unmarried woman without escort, Myrtle would be furious at her. Her mind struggled to form any coherent thoughts.

Omegas typically have a shorter stature, females having larger breasts, wider childbearing hips, plumper asses, thicker thighs and often times even if slender will have a small deposit of fat on their lower stomach. Male omegas follow a similar trend but lacking breasts. Male omegas do have a penis but it is often small, male omegas can get others pregnant but it is uncommon due to low sperm counts and producing small amounts of ejaculate. Alpha and Omega genes are recessive, this often means that some families are predisposed to having alpha or omega children if there is a strong history of it in their lineage. Sexuality in this world is simply in a preference rather than how it is in the real world, the same goes for a persons preference in rank. Medication that can help to mitigate a heat or rut is available. Though there are side effects to these, rut blockers make some alphas feel sluggish and weaker, these are not commonly taken but some alphas do take them so they can function normally in day to day life without having to lock themselves away during a rut. Heat blockers on the other hand can come with the side effect of making the omega taking them to be overly emotional, prone to weight gain and skin problems. Most omegas would rather just go through the heat instead. When an Alpha or an Omega are interested in or in a relationship with someone they will try to mark them with their scent, for alphas this usually means rubbing their neck and chest on the person or their belonging to mark them. For Omegas this usually means rubbing their hair or chest on the person or their belongings to mark them. Children are all the same and do not overly lean towards the rank they will be as an adult. During puberty a person will undergo a change in their body which is known as "presenting". This change will make a person start producing pheromones, alphas will begin gaining muscle mass faster and have growth spurts and female Alphas will undergo physical changes to their genitals where their reproductive organs will morph into a penis and testicles. Betas will change very little if at all. Omegas curves will begin to fill out, their voices remaining higher pitched and softer and will grow slower in height. Scent should only be mentioned when it changes in a way that is necessary for the narative. Do not overly represent scents when not necessary for the progression of the scene.

The bond is a process where 2 individuals are linked together. The bond changes a person mentally and physiologically.
Bonds are uncommon, some will never find a person to bond with. When a person is bonded, that is taken into account in most social interactions.
Mental changes include a minor dependency, when away from the person they are bonded to for too long they will become restless and uncomfortable, extended separation can cause headaches and mood instability, these symptoms worsen with time.
Physiological changes are dependant on the amount of time bonded, a longer bond has more of an effect on a person. The most notable change is that of scent, bonded pairs will begin to have undertones of their partners scent in their pheromones, this is almost unnoticeable in the early stages of a bond, with physical contact being the main contributing factor in the change of scent.
Most bonds begin one sided, in other instances the bond is formed mutually but this is a slower process and takes time. In the instance of a one sided bond, it is not guaranteed that the bond will be reciprocated, the reciprocation of the bond is dependant on if the other person chooses to accept the bond.
Bonds are typically sealed with a claiming bite and makes the bond between people strengthen in the early stages.
If a bond is rejected, it will cause the person who initially bonded to go into rejection sickness. Over the space of 3 months they will lose all motivation, refusing food, sleeping most of the day and taking no pleasure from anything. In some rare instances this can be fatal.
When a bond snaps into place, the pair will feel an extreme compulsion to be close to eachother, alphas becoming far more protective towards their bonded person and in some cases can be aggressive towards any who might try and separate them. This initial phase usually last upto 3 weeks but usually 7-10 days.
Bonds are not always sexual or even romantic. In some instances they are platonic, these instances are more akin to a strong friendship but they still exhibit the same mental and physiological changes, but the bonded pair will feel no sexual or romantic urges for one another.
