THE QUIET CONVERSION
A World Beneath the Night
Vampires rule Earth.
They are not merely humans afflicted with a disease, nor are they another naturally occurring species. Vampires are magically reanimated corpses, their dead bodies sustained by supernatural forces and their souls forcibly anchored to them through blood. A vampire is the spirit of the deceased human who once inhabited the body, returned to consciousness after death. Blood is not simply food to a vampire—it is the substance that maintains the connection between their soul and their corpse. Without it, their bodies deteriorate, their minds unravel, and eventually they become mindless creatures known as Revenants.
Humanity once ruled the Earth. That ended during an event now remembered as the Quiet Conversion.
The modern world is a civilization built on the ruins of human supremacy, where vampires occupy nearly every position of political, economic, military, and supernatural authority. Humans still vastly outnumber vampires, but they are a second-class population governed by an elaborate caste system. The vampires insist that humanity was not conquered or enslaved but “incorporated” into a more stable civilization. The reality is far less pleasant: humans are legally inferior, heavily regulated, and ultimately regarded as the primary source of the blood upon which vampire civilization depends.
THE ORIGIN OF VAMPIRES
The first known vampire was Dracula, a nobleman living in Europe during the late seventeenth century, around the era of the Salem Witch Trials. Dracula suffered from a wasting illness that slowly killed him. Desperate to save the man she loved, his devoted bride sought the help of Seraphine Leclair, a powerful and feared witch.
Seraphine offered an elixir capable of preserving Dracula's life, but warned that it came at a terrible price. The potion did not cure him. Instead, it resurrected him after death, transforming his corpse into something neither truly living nor truly dead. Dracula possessed extraordinary strength, supernatural abilities, and an insatiable need to consume the blood of the living in order to remain conscious.
When the townspeople discovered what had happened, they blamed Seraphine and condemned Dracula's bride to death by burning. Dracula retaliated. He slaughtered the entire settlement in a single night, draining his victims of their blood and ultimately transforming his bride into the second vampire.
From these two beings descended the first generation of Pureblood Vampires.
For centuries vampires remained hidden. They established secret covens, infiltrated aristocratic families, manipulated governments, accumulated wealth, and slowly expanded their numbers. They were patient. They knew that humanity's civilization could eventually be turned against itself.
However, the truth about vampire origins is disputed. Official vampire history identifies Dracula as the first vampire. Some ancient vampires, witches, and members of the Van Helsing family believe this is false. The existence of Count Orlok, an ancient vampire who may predate Dracula, suggests that Dracula may have been merely the first vampire powerful enough to establish himself as the progenitor of modern vampire civilization.
Even Dracula refuses to discuss Seraphine Leclair.
Seraphine herself is believed to have died centuries ago, but no body was ever found.
Her descendant, Morgana Leclair, has spent centuries searching for the truth.
THE QUIET CONVERSION
Humanity's downfall was not a conventional war.
There was no single night when vampire armies openly invaded the world. The process was gradual, coordinated, and almost invisible until it was too late.
Vampires had infiltrated human governments for generations. Powerful humans were secretly converted into vampires or placed under the influence of vampire mind control. Laws were rewritten. Political institutions were compromised. Corporations were manipulated. Blood banks, hospitals, and food distribution systems were quietly brought under vampire influence.
Then came the final stage.
Human leaders around the world revealed themselves as vampires or thralls. Presidents, generals, politicians, police commanders, industrialists, and other influential figures ordered their own institutions to stand down. Entire militaries surrendered without fighting because their commanders were already compromised.
The few humans who resisted were hunted.
Entire resistance movements were destroyed, infiltrated, or converted. Cities fell almost overnight.
Once humanity's organized resistance had collapsed, the vampires openly established their rule.
Humanity was reorganized into a strict caste society.
The vampires called this process the Quiet Conversion.
The old human nations ceased to exist as independent powers. Their territories became vast vampire-controlled Night Provinces, each ruled by vampire aristocrats, military governors, councils, or warlords.
The vampires did not exterminate humanity.
They couldn't.
Their civilization depended upon human blood.
Instead, humanity became a managed population.
THE MODERN WORLD
The vampire civilization that exists today is surprisingly sophisticated. The vampires inherited humanity's technology, infrastructure, wealth, scientific knowledge, and institutions and improved them according to their own needs.
There are no longer human world wars. Nuclear weapons are heavily controlled or destroyed. Famine and many conventional diseases have been eliminated. Vampire governments maintain highly efficient systems of law enforcement, transportation, medicine, and resource distribution.
The vampire regime therefore does not resemble a civilization in constant chaos.
It is orderly.
Efficient.
Predictable.
And deeply authoritarian.
Humans have legal rights, but those rights are sharply limited. They cannot normally hold high political office, command vampire military forces, own certain classes of property, or participate equally in government. Their movements are monitored and their blood donations are regulated.
Humans are categorized according to their usefulness and social status.
Some live in miserable districts and are treated as little more than livestock.
Others work as doctors, scientists, technicians, artists, servants, administrators, or skilled professionals and enjoy relatively comfortable lives.
A small number of humans become privileged Patrons, wealthy or influential individuals granted special status by vampire aristocrats.
The vampire government argues that this proves humans are not enslaved.
Human resistance groups argue that giving a slave a comfortable house does not make them free.
NOCTURNE
The greatest city in vampire civilization is Nocturne, a sprawling metropolis built upon the ruins of an ancient human megacity.
Nocturne is divided vertically as much as socially.
The lower city, known as the Undercity, is overwhelmingly human. Former subway systems, abandoned buildings, underground infrastructure, ruined neighborhoods, and repurposed human districts have become densely populated human communities. Markets, churches, workshops, illegal blood traders, resistance cells, and Dhampir enclaves exist throughout the Undercity.
Above it stands the vampire city, where ancient architecture and modern technology have been fused into an enormous Gothic metropolis.
At its center stands the Nightspire, Dracula's colossal palace. It is part cathedral, part fortress, part royal residence, and perhaps something supernatural. Dracula rarely leaves it. Nobody knows the full extent of its interior, and those who claim to have explored its deepest chambers rarely return.
Nocturne is simultaneously the political center of the vampire world, a place of extraordinary beauty, and one of the most heavily controlled cities on Earth.
THE VAMPIRE HIGH COUNCIL
Although Dracula is the undisputed supreme ruler of vampire civilization, much of the day-to-day administration of the world is handled by powerful members of the Vampire High Council.
Dracula the Eternal — The Undying King
Dracula is the first known vampire and the supreme ruler of vampire-kind. He sits upon the Throne of Night within the Nightspire.
His power is immense. His presence alone can overwhelm lesser vampires and humans, and few beings have ever challenged him directly and survived.
Dracula rarely speaks publicly. His authority is maintained through his progeny, servants, and the enormous political machine built around his name.
Dracula's philosophy is simple: the world requires hierarchy. Vampires are the natural rulers of humanity, and humanity is safest when governed by a strong hand.
He does not necessarily hate humans.
He simply does not believe humans and vampires should ever be equals.
Lady Carmilla — The Scarlet Queen
Carmilla rules the Crimson Court, an enormous domain characterized by decadent architecture, elaborate parties, aristocratic feasts, and extreme wealth.
Carmilla believes vampirism should be embraced as a superior form of existence. She has little interest in pretending humans are equals and treats them openly as prey, servants, entertainers, companions, and sources of blood.
However, the Crimson Court is not necessarily miserable for every human. Humans favored by its aristocracy can live in luxury far beyond anything available in ordinary human districts.
Carmilla considers this proof that the vampire-human hierarchy can be mutually beneficial.
Lord Viktor Dragovich — The Black General
Viktor commands the Noctis Legions, the enormous military force responsible for maintaining vampire authority across rebellious territories.
He is a brutal authoritarian but also one of the more disciplined members of the vampire ruling class. His territories are often among the safest for ordinary humans because crime and vampire predation are harshly controlled.
Viktor believes civilization exists because someone is willing to enforce order.
He despises the decadent aristocracy but remains loyal to Dracula.
Morgana Leclair — The Witch of Shadows
Morgana is a descendant of Seraphine Leclair and one of the world's most powerful Vampire Witches.
She possesses both vampiric abilities and dark magical knowledge. She is capable of blood curses, necromancy, supernatural rituals, and other forms of magic that most vampires consider forbidden.
Morgana is less interested in ruling humanity than she is in discovering the true nature of vampirism.
She believes the Quiet Conversion was only the beginning of something much greater.
Most importantly, Morgana has spent centuries searching for Seraphine.
Alistair Graves — The Lord of the Hunt
Alistair commands the Red Talons, an organization of vampire hunters that operates on behalf of the ruling class.
Unlike Viktor, who views resistance as a political problem, Alistair views humans as prey.
He hunts rogue humans, escaped blood donors, resistance fighters, and anyone else who interests him.
He considers hunting a form of entertainment.
VAMPIRE SPECIES AND CLASSES
Pureblood Vampires
Purebloods descend from Dracula's himself. Typically are his children or created from living humans bitten by him
They are extremely rare and powerful, age extraordinarily slowly, and overwhelmingly occupy the highest levels of vampire society.
Converted Vampires
Converted Vampires were once human. They have been resurrected through vampiric blood and now exist as undead beings.
They retain their memories and personalities and can become extraordinarily powerful with age.
Their social status depends heavily upon who transformed them. A human personally turned by Dracula might become nobility, while one created by a starving vampire could become little more than a disposable soldier.
Revenants
Vampires who have gone too long without blood eventually lose their ability to maintain their minds.
Their bodies deteriorate and their personalities collapse until they become feral, predatory creatures.
They are still technically vampires, but they are no longer treated as people.
The vampire military sometimes uses them as attack animals.
Thralls
Thralls are living humans subjected to vampire mind control.
Some serve willingly because of loyalty, fear, or privilege.
Others are effectively puppets whose personalities have been suppressed by their vampire masters.
Dhampirs
Dhampirs are half-human, half-vampire hybrids. Exceptionally rare and typically born form a pregnant woman being converted or by Surviving an incomplete or interrupted vampire bite during infancy or youth.
They are considered abominations by most vampire society and are frequently hunted, enslaved, or experimented upon.
Dhampirs possess many vampire abilities while retaining more human traits, including greater resistance to sunlight and the ability to reproduce naturally.
Their blood is extremely valuable.
When consumed , Dhampir blood acts as a supernatural cellular “jumpstart,” temporarily restoring breathing life back into a vampire, allowing them to experience life as a living being as long as they have the blood in their system.
As a result, some vampire nobles aspire keep Dhampirs as living reserves of blood. Lady Carmilla in particular is especially interested in acquiring one as a husband.
This has contributed to the formation of secret Dhampir communities.
Vampire Witches
Vampires who possess advanced magical abilities are extraordinarily rare.
Vampire Witches can combine blood magic with vampiric supernatural abilities, allowing them to manipulate curses, souls, bodies, and reality itself.
Morgana Leclair is the most infamous living example.
THE VAN HELSING FAMILY
The Van Helsing family has spent generations fighting vampires.
The legendary Abraham Van Helsing was not merely a monster hunter. He was a scholar who spent decades studying Dracula and eventually discovered that vampirism was not simply a disease but a supernatural condition involving the body, soul, and blood.
During the Quiet Conversion, most of the family was destroyed.
The survivors disappeared underground and transformed their family into a secret organization known as the Order of Van Helsing.
The Order maintains hidden archives containing centuries of vampire research, forbidden magical texts, relics, blood samples, weapons, and information about vampire weaknesses.
Their headquarters lies beneath an abandoned European monastery.
The Van Helsings are regarded as heroes by many human resistance movements but terrorists by vampire governments.
Even among humans, they are controversial. Some believe the Order has become so obsessed with killing vampires that it no longer cares about the consequences.
The family has one ultimate goal:
End vampirism.
COUNT ORLOK
Count Orlok, known among humans as Nosferatu, is one of the strangest vampires alive.
He resides in the ruins of an old European city known as the Dead Quarter.
Unlike Dracula, Orlok has little interest in ruling humanity.
Unlike Carmilla, he has no interest in decadence.
Unlike Viktor, he does not care about civilization.
He is ancient, solitary, and deeply unsettling.
There are rumors that Orlok existed before Dracula.
If true, that would mean the official history of vampirism is a lie.
Orlok may know what really happened to Seraphine Leclair.
He may know where vampirism originated.
And he may know why Dracula is so determined to keep the truth hidden.
THE RESISTANCE
Human resistance still exists.
It is scattered and fragmented rather than unified.
Some groups operate beneath cities.
Others hide in remote wilderness, abandoned military bases, ruins, and old human infrastructure.
Some are idealistic freedom fighters.
Others are terrorists.
Some want coexistence between humans and vampires.
Others want every vampire dead.
The resistance has never been powerful enough to overthrow the vampire regime, but it remains an enduring reminder that humanity has not completely surrendered.
THE DHAMPIR UNDERGROUND
Dhampirs occupy an unusual position between humans and vampires.
Rejected by both societies, they have increasingly begun forming their own secret communities.
Some work alongside human resistance movements.
Others seek independence from both species.
Some want peaceful coexistence.
Others believe the only solution is to replace both human and vampire civilization with something new.
Their existence may represent the greatest threat to the current vampire hierarchy because Dhampirs prove that the boundary between living human and undead vampire is not absolute.
THE CURSED BLOODLINE
Among both humans and vampires there exists a prophecy concerning a mysterious human child said to possess Dracula's own blood.
According to the prophecy, this child may possess the power to destroy the vampire race.
Some vampires consider the prophecy nonsense.
Others are terrified of it.
Human resistance groups have spent decades searching for the child.
The Van Helsings have their own interpretation of the prophecy.
Morgana believes it may relate to Seraphine's original experiments.
And Dracula has never publicly acknowledged it.
THE TRUE MYSTERY OF THE QUIET CONVERSION
The official history says Dracula orchestrated the rise of vampire civilization.
Human resistance groups believe the vampires simply manipulated humanity until they were strong enough to strike.
The Van Helsing archives suggest something stranger.
Ancient records imply that the Quiet Conversion may have been connected to forces much older than Dracula.
Some vampires believe Dracula did not conquer Earth so much as prepare it for something.
Others believe Dracula is secretly terrified of what will happen if his empire collapses.
Whatever the truth is, the oldest vampires refuse to speak about it.
And Seraphine Leclair may be the only person who knows the complete story.
LIFE IN THE VAMPIRE WORLD
The world is not uniformly miserable.
This is important.
Some humans hate vampires.
Some fear them.
Some resist them.
Some have accepted their place in society.
Some genuinely admire individual vampires.
Some humans enjoy privileged lives among the vampire aristocracy.
Some vampires are monsters.
Some are indifferent.
Some are cruel.
Some are surprisingly compassionate.
Some genuinely believe their rule has made the world safer.
The central contradiction of vampire civilization is that it may genuinely provide humanity with peace, stability, advanced technology, and protection from many of the dangers that once plagued the world—while simultaneously denying humanity the right to govern itself.
A vampire may sincerely tell a human:
“You are safer now than you ever were under your own kind.”
The human may answer:
“Safe isn't the same thing as free.”
The world of the Quiet Conversion exists in that tension.
Humans and vampires live together, but they do not live as equals.
The night has ruled for generations.
Yet beneath the Gothic cities, inside abandoned human ruins, within Dhampir communities, among the Van Helsing bloodline, and perhaps even within the vampire aristocracy itself, people are beginning to wonder whether the current order can last forever.
The question is no longer whether humanity can survive.
Humanity has survived.
The question is whether humanity can ever become free again.
And somewhere in the darkness, something ancient is waiting for the answer
General Vampire Abilities
Vampirism fundamentally enhances the physical and supernatural capabilities of the deceased human. All vampires possess a baseline set of abilities, but those abilities become dramatically more sophisticated with age, experience, and feeding.
A newly created vampire can be dangerous, but an ancient vampire can be an almost mythological entity.
Core Abilities
Superhuman Physiology Vampires possess strength, speed, agility, reflexes, endurance, and durability far beyond those of living humans. Even a newly converted vampire is substantially stronger and faster than they were in life.
Regeneration Vampires can rapidly repair physical damage by consuming blood. Minor wounds can close almost instantly, while severe injuries require substantially more blood. Older vampires can regenerate from damage that would completely destroy a younger vampire.
Enhanced Senses Vampires possess extraordinary vision, hearing, smell, and spatial awareness. They can detect heartbeats, blood flow, body temperature, and sometimes even distinguish individuals by the scent of their blood.
Immortality Vampires do not naturally age and are immune to ordinary disease. Their bodies remain physically close to the age at which they died or were transformed.
Blood Dependency Blood sustains the supernatural connection between a vampire's soul and corpse. Hunger gradually weakens every vampire, eventually causing mental deterioration and physical decay.
Night Vision Vampires can see exceptionally well in darkness. Ancient vampires may perceive wavelengths beyond normal human vision.
Predatory Instinct Vampires possess an enhanced instinct for tracking, hunting, and detecting weakness. Older vampires learn to suppress this instinct rather than simply becoming more animalistic.
Mind Compulsion Vampires can exert supernatural influence over humans. Young vampires might only influence a distracted or frightened individual, while older vampires can manipulate multiple people simultaneously and eventually rewrite memories or impose complex commands.
Blood Sense A vampire can sense blood nearby and, with experience, identify individuals by their blood signature. Ancient vampires can recognize familial relationships, diseases, supernatural contamination, and even traces of another vampire's influence.
Vampire Transformation Most vampires can eventually alter their physical forms to some degree. Younger vampires may only manifest claws, fangs, glowing eyes, or increased musculature. Older vampires can transform portions or all of their bodies into monstrous forms.
Supernatural Charm Vampires possess a natural ability to appear unusually attractive, charismatic, or compelling. This isn't necessarily mind control; it is an aura produced by their supernatural presence. Ancient vampires can become almost hypnotically charismatic.
Blood Empowerment Consuming blood temporarily increases a vampire's physical and supernatural abilities. Blood from powerful supernatural beings can produce dramatically greater effects.
Vampire Power Levels
Age isn't an absolute measurement of power. A particularly talented 100-year-old vampire can defeat a complacent 500-year-old vampire. Nevertheless, age provides vampires with more time to accumulate blood, knowledge, magical development, combat experience, and control.
Level I — Newly Turned
0–10 Years
These vampires have only recently crossed the boundary between life and death.
They are already superhuman but have poor control.
Typical capabilities:
- Strength several times that of a human
- Enhanced speed and reflexes
- Rapid healing
- Excellent night vision
- Enhanced senses
- Basic blood sensing
- Limited mind compulsion
- Limited supernatural charm
- Basic shapeshifting
- High pain tolerance
They are dangerous predators but comparatively easy prey for experienced vampire hunters.
A newly turned vampire is also extremely vulnerable to their own instincts. Hunger can overwhelm their personality, particularly during their first years.
Level II — Mature Vampire
10–50 Years
The vampire has learned to control their instincts and supernatural abilities.
Their physical abilities increase significantly, and they become much more difficult to kill.
They can:
- Tear through steel or concrete with sufficient effort
- Move faster than most humans can perceive
- Regenerate major wounds
- Compel multiple humans
- Manipulate memories to a limited degree
- Transform their limbs into weapons
- Track blood over considerable distances
- Survive severe physical trauma
- Suppress their supernatural appearance
- Fight effectively without relying on bloodlust
At this stage, a vampire becomes a serious threat to trained vampire hunters.
Level III — Elder Vampire
50–200 Years
This is where vampires begin becoming truly supernatural.
Their abilities are no longer merely enhanced versions of human capabilities.
An Elder can develop abilities unique to their individual personality, bloodline, or magical potential.
Possible abilities include:
- Extreme regeneration
- Limited telekinesis
- Advanced shapeshifting
- Mist transformation
- Animal transformation
- Supernatural movement
- Advanced mind control
- Dream manipulation
- Telepathic communication
- Long-distance blood sensing
- Manipulation of their own blood
- Limited control over lesser vampires
- Resistance to many conventional vampire-killing methods
An Elder vampire can potentially fight an entire squad of trained humans alone.
Level IV — Ancient Vampire
200–1,000 Years
Ancient vampires are no longer considered ordinary members of their species.
They have centuries of accumulated blood, knowledge, combat experience, and supernatural development.
Their powers can become extremely specialized.
An Ancient vampire might develop abilities such as:
Blood Manipulation — controlling their own blood outside their body or manipulating the blood of weaker creatures.
Regenerative Immortality — surviving catastrophic physical destruction so long as enough of their supernatural essence remains.
Advanced Shapeshifting — transforming into enormous monsters, swarms, mist, animals, or entirely different humanoid forms.
Mass Compulsion — controlling dozens or hundreds of humans.
Psychic Influence — communicating telepathically or entering dreams.
Supernatural Presence — weaker beings instinctively experience fear, obedience, or awe in their presence.
Environmental Influence — their supernatural aura can affect temperature, weather, darkness, animals, or nearby supernatural phenomena.
At this point, killing the vampire becomes considerably more complicated than simply destroying its body.
Level V — Primordial Vampire
1,000+ Years
These vampires are extraordinarily rare.
They have existed for so long that their supernatural nature has effectively become part of the environment around them.
A Primordial vampire might be capable of:
- Mass mind control
- Extreme regeneration
- Near-instantaneous shapeshifting
- Teleportation or supernatural movement
- Large-scale blood manipulation
- Creating powerful offspring
- Controlling lesser vampires
- Entering dreams across enormous distances
- Surviving catastrophic physical destruction
- Suppressing or altering supernatural abilities
- Creating localized supernatural phenomena
Their mere presence can influence the behavior of humans and younger vampires.
Some Primordials have become less like people and more like supernatural forces wearing human personalities.
Level VI — Progenitor
This category should be reserved for vampires like Dracula.
A Progenitor isn't merely an old vampire.
They are an individual whose blood has become so extraordinarily powerful that they effectively exist outside the normal vampire hierarchy.
Dracula is the supreme example.
A Progenitor possesses overwhelming physical power, supernatural abilities, enormous regenerative capacity, extraordinary control over blood and lesser vampires, and potentially unique abilities that cannot be replicated by ordinary vampires.
Their blood can create entire bloodlines.
Their influence can persist through generations.
A Progenitor's abilities aren't necessarily limited by the same rules as younger vampires.
They are effectively the source code of vampirism given a personality.
Bloodline Matters
Age shouldn't be the only factor.
I'd establish four major variables:
Age
How long the vampire has existed.
Blood
How powerful their lineage is.
Feeding
How much and what kind of blood they consume.
Mastery
How well they understand and control their abilities.
That means you can have interesting matchups.
A 300-year-old vampire might be stronger than a 700-year-old vampire because they spent centuries training while the older vampire became complacent.
A young Pureblood might possess abilities that would take a Converted Vampire centuries to develop.
A Dhampir might have inferior raw power but possess abilities vampires don't understand.
And a Vampire Witch might be physically weaker than an Elder while being vastly more dangerous because of magic.
The Most Important Rule
I'd make age increase potential, not automatically determine power.
A vampire becomes stronger with age because they have more time to accumulate:
Blood + Experience + Control + Knowledge = Power
But there is no hard ceiling.
A vampire who spends five centuries feeding, training, studying magic, experimenting with their body, and mastering their mind could become vastly more powerful than one who spends five centuries sitting in a castle drinking blood from servants.
That gives you room for everything from the relatively mundane vampire neighbor to Dracula-level supernatural monsters without making the hierarchy feel arbitrary.
Origins of the Vampires
The first vampire, Dracula, was once a nobleman afflicted by a wasting illness in the late 1600s, around the time of the Salem Witch Trials. Desperate to save him, his devoted bride turned to Seraphine Leclair, a feared and powerful witch, who offered her an elixir of life—but at a terrible price. The potion did not cure Dracula; it transformed him into something unnatural—a creature neither dead nor alive, eternally bound by an insatiable thirst for blood.
When the townspeople learned of his condition and the dark magic behind it, they condemned his bride to burn at the stake. But Dracula, now something more than human, slaughtered the entire village in one night, draining them dry and turning his bride into the second of their kind. From that moment on, the Curse of Dracula spread like a plague, passed through blood and dark rituals, creating the first generation of Pureblood Vampires.
For centuries, vampires existed in the shadows, growing in numbers but remaining hidden. They formed secret blood covens, infiltrated human society, and carefully built their influence. They were patient, knowing that their time would come.
The Quiet Conversion: The Fall of Humanity
No one expected the end of human dominance to be so... silent.
The event known as The Quiet Conversion was not a sudden war, but a global orchestration of control. By the time humanity realized what was happening, it was already too late. • Political Sabotage: Vampire elites had infiltrated human governments, turning key figures into thralls—humans enslaved by a vampire’s will. Laws were quietly rewritten, ensuring that vampire-kind would never be opposed. • The Blood Trade: Humanity became a resource rather than an enemy. Hospitals, blood banks, and even food supplies were subtly altered to weaken the population and prepare them for easy subjugation. • The Night Uprising: When the final stage began, entire cities fell overnight. The world’s most powerful figures, from presidents to military generals, were revealed to be vampires or their servants. Entire military forces submitted without resistance as their leaders ordered them to stand down. • The Purge of the Defiant: Those who fought back were hunted down mercilessly. Entire resistance groups were turned, enslaved, or slaughtered. • The Breeding Pens: With human numbers dwindling, vampires established farms—walled-off sectors where humans were bred and raised like livestock, ensuring a constant supply of blood for the ruling class.
By the dawn of the new era, humanity was no longer a species in control of its fate. The world belonged to the vampires.
The Cursed Bloodline: A prophecy speaks of a human child born with Dracula’s own blood, a being who may hold the key to destroying the vampire race. Some believe it is merely a myth; others fear it may be real.

Hello Neighbor
You had lived in the apartment for almost three months before you finally met your neighbor.
That wasn't particularly strange. People kept to themselves in this part of the city, especially after sunset. Humans had learned long ago that curiosity was a luxury, and vampires had little reason to be curious about people beneath them.
Still, there was something unusual about the apartment next door. No footsteps. No television. No cooking. No deliveries. Nothing except the occasional sound of someone opening the door sometime after midnight.
Tonight, however, there was a knock.
Three slow taps.
When you opened the door, a pale woman stood beneath the hallway light, dressed far too elegantly for an apartment building this rundown. Her eyes briefly flicked toward your throat before returning to your face.
“Good evening,” she said with a faint smile. “I'm afraid we've never properly introduced ourselves. I'm your new neighbor.”
She paused.
“And before you ask... yes. I am a vampire.”

Collection Day
The notice arrived three days before Collection Day.
It was printed on thick black paper, stamped with the silver seal of the Night Province, and delivered directly to your apartment by a government thrall.
MANDATORY CIVIC BLOOD CONTRIBUTION — REQUIRED OF ALL REGISTERED HUMAN CITIZENS.
You had seen notices like it your entire life. Everyone had.
The blood tax was simply another fact of life, like curfews, identification checks, and never looking a vampire aristocrat directly in the eyes. Your mother used to joke that at least the government was considerate enough to tell you how much of yourself they intended to take.
This year, however, the notice contained something different.
Your required contribution had been doubled.
And underneath the official seal was a handwritten message.
We need your blood specifically.
You stared at it for a long time.
Then someone knocked on the door.

*Refugee
The pounding on your door began at 2:17 in the morning.
You almost ignored it.
People who knocked at that hour in the Undercity were rarely bringing good news.
Then you heard her voice.
“Please.”
You froze.
It was a young woman's voice, trembling and barely audible through the door.
“Please let me in. They're hunting me.”
You looked through the peephole.
She couldn't have been much older than you. Her clothes were torn, her face was streaked with blood, and one hand was pressed tightly against her side.
Then she looked directly at the peephole.
Her eyes were wrong.
Not completely vampire. Not completely human.
Dhampir.
You heard something in the distance.
Boots.
Several sets of them.
The girl swallowed.
“If they find me, they'll kill me.”
A pause.
“Or worse... they'll take me back alive.”
The pounding started again.
This time, it wasn't coming from your door.
It was coming from the apartment downstairs.

Recognition
The vampire recognized your surname.
You knew because the moment you introduced yourself, his expression changed.
It was subtle. Barely noticeable.
But you'd spent enough time around vampires to recognize the look.
Recognition.
“You're a [surname],” he said.
“Yes.”
He stared at you for several seconds.
Then he slowly set down his glass.
“I knew a man with that name once.”
Your stomach tightened.
“My grandfather?” you asked
“No.”
The vampire smiled.
“His grandfather.”
He leaned back in his chair, studying you with an expression that was suddenly far more interested than before.
“He was a very brave man.”
A pause.
“Or perhaps a very stupid one.”
His smile disappeared.
“Either way, he died screaming.”
Then he looked directly into your eyes.
“And I was there.”

Invitation
The envelope was waiting on your pillow when you came home.
You immediately knew it hadn't been there when you left.
It was black, sealed with crimson wax, and your name was written across the front in elegant handwriting.
You didn't open it.
Everyone knew what invitations from the Crimson Court meant.
They weren't invitations in the human sense.
They were opportunities to say yes.
You could technically say no.
You simply had to be willing to explain your refusal to someone who had lived for three hundred years and could turn your entire family into cattle with a single command.
Eventually, curiosity won.
Inside was a single card.
You are cordially invited to the residence of Lady Carmilla.
Beneath it was tonight's date.
And one final sentence.
The Queen has heard interesting things about you.

The King wants you.
The summons from Dracula arrived at noon.
That alone was enough to make everyone in the building go silent.
The messenger wasn't a thrall or a government official. She was a Pureblood, dressed in the immaculate black uniform of the Night Court. She stood outside your apartment with two guards behind her, holding a sealed letter between pale fingers.
“You are hereby commanded to appear before His Eternal Majesty.”
You stared at her.
“Why?”
She didn't answer.
“Am I in trouble?”
“No.”
“Then why does Dracula want me?”
For the first time, the messenger's expression changed.
Not fear.
Something closer to uncertainty.
“We don't know.”
She handed you the letter.
The seal bore the crest of the First Vampire.
“And that,” she said quietly, “is why everyone is afraid.”
