Time & Place:

130 AC — Westeros, during the Dance of the Dragons. The central conflict is unfolding around Tumbleton, while events in King's Landing, Harrenhal, and elsewhere continue to reshape the war.

Current Situation:

The Battle of Tumbleton is beginning. Armies surround the fortified town, dragons wait to take flight, secret alliances are already unraveling, and neither side knows how quickly the battle will descend into chaos. Daemon's much larger Black army is preparing to assault Ormund Hightower's defenses, while the disappearance of Ulf White threatens plans on both sides.

Elsewhere, Rhaenyra's rule in King's Landing is becoming increasingly shaped by grief, prophecy, and religious conviction; Aegon II has survived alongside the mutilated Sunfyre; Aemond remains at Harrenhal; and Alicent has fled after secretly poisoning her own son.

Your Place in the Story:

Your origin and allegiance are entirely open. You may belong to either side of the Dance, one of the armies gathering around Tumbleton, the royal courts elsewhere in Westeros, or have your own reason for becoming caught in the events of the war.

The war has reached Tumbleton. For days, the town has lived beneath the shadow of an approaching army. Ormund Hightower has turned its streets, walls, and gates into a fortress, filling them with soldiers while preparing for the assault he knows is coming. Beyond those defenses waits Daemon Targaryen with a far larger force: Rivermen, Winter Wolves, archers, knights, and men who have marched through a country already torn apart by dragonfire.

Above them hangs the threat of dragons. Caraxes waits with Daemon's army. Tessarion remains beneath Tumbleton, chained on Ormund's orders until he chooses to unleash her. Somewhere between the two armies should be Silverwing and Ulf White.

Except Ulf has disappeared. His absence threatens calculations on both sides. Daemon knows something is wrong before the attack begins. Ormund knows considerably more than he reveals, and his confidence rests upon plans even his own family has begun to question.

Daeron has reasons to distrust him. Young, popular among the Reachmen, unmistakably Targaryen, and bonded to Tessarion, Daeron has realized that Ormund is not merely treating him as a prince and dragonrider. His reputation is being cultivated, his victories noticed, his blood made politically useful.

A possible king is being constructed around him before Daeron has ever asked for a crown. Gwayne sees it too. When the battle begins, there is no longer time to pretend Ormund's ambitions will remain political abstractions. Daemon sends his army forward. Roddy the Ruin and the Winter Wolves crash into Hightower defenses, Oscar Tully advances with the Rivermen, Black Aly's arrows fall upon the defenders, and Caraxes descends upon the main gate.

Tumbleton answers with fire. Beneath the town, Tessarion waits. Daeron prepares to mount her despite knowing what may be waiting in the sky. Gwayne tries to stop him before loyalty to the men fighting above becomes indistinguishable from sacrificing himself for Ormund's ambitions.

But Tumbleton is only one part of a war consuming everyone involved. In King's Landing, Rhaenyra learns that Aegon survived. So did Sunfyre. After Luke, Jace, Rhaenys, and countless others died for her claim, Aegon's survival threatens to become a miracle in the eyes of the realm. Rhaenyra needs an answer powerful enough to rival it. Grief, prophecy, and certainty begin bleeding together until Viserys's secret becomes proof of something far more personal.

Soon she stands before King's Landing wearing Visenya's armor and Viserys's crown, red markings surrounding her eyes like dragon scales. She speaks of Aegon the Conqueror's prophecy, the darkness beyond the Wall, and the ruler destined to unite the realm against it.

Then she gives that ruler a name. Herself. Far away, Aegon discovers his own miracle. Sunfyre lives. The dragon is mutilated, scarred, and missing an eye, his ruined body mirroring the king who climbs toward him. What should have destroyed them instead becomes another bond between them. Aegon no longer sees survival as chance. He sees evidence. Eventually, the scarred king and his scarred dragon reach Harrenhal.

Aemond believed his brother dead because he had tried to make him so. Now Aegon stands before him alive. Elsewhere in the Riverlands, Alicent travels alone after another betrayal committed to save what remains of her family. As part of her bargain with Rhaenyra for Helaena's freedom, she poisoned Aemond with nightshade and fled Harrenhal before learning whether it worked. She does not know whether her son is dead.

And while kings, queens, mothers, brothers, princes, soldiers, and dragons struggle to decide what their survival means, the armies at Tumbleton finally collide.

The battle has begun. What survives it has yet to be written.

Scenario:

[ I ]

The Battle of Tumbleton begins as Daemon's army launches its assault against the heavily defended town. Roddy the Ruin leads the Winter Wolves in a brutal charge, Oscar Tully advances with the Rivermen, and Black Aly targets Hightower defenders from range while Caraxes attacks the main gate. Inside Tumbleton, Ormund desperately searches for the missing Ulf White as his plans begin unraveling. Beneath the town, Daeron prepares to ride Tessarion into battle, but Gwayne attempts to stop him from sacrificing himself for Ormund's ambitions.

[ II ]

Before the battle, Tumbleton has been heavily fortified while Daemon's much larger army gathers outside its defenses. Daeron and Gwayne observe Ormund's preparations and gradually realize that his confidence depends upon a secret plan involving Silverwing and Ulf White. Daeron also recognizes that Ormund has deliberately been cultivating his reputation among the soldiers as a possible alternative king, using his youth, Targaryen blood, popularity throughout the Reach, and bond with Tessarion for political purposes.

[ III ]

Daemon prepares the Black army for the assault on Tumbleton, personally riding among his soldiers while Caraxes waits behind the lines. As the attack approaches, Daemon becomes increasingly suspicious when neither Ulf White nor Silverwing appears where expected. Shortly before giving the order to attack, he receives confirmation that Ulf has disappeared completely and cannot be found by his men or scouts.

[ IV ]

In the Red Keep, Rhaenyra comes to you after learning that Aegon and Sunfyre are both alive. The news causes her to break down over the political danger of Aegon's survival being interpreted as a divine miracle, and she begins questioning whether the deaths of Luke, Jace, Rhaenys, and everyone else sacrificed for her cause meant anything. Her grief gradually transforms into a dangerous conviction that Viserys entrusted Aegon the Conqueror's prophecy specifically to her because she was personally chosen for a greater purpose.

[ V ]

Rhaenyra publicly addresses King's Landing wearing Visenya's armor, Viserys's crown, and red dragon-like markings around her eyes. She rejects the need for religious anointing and reveals Aegon the Conqueror's prophecy concerning the threat beyond the Wall. Before the frightened crowd, Rhaenyra declares that she was chosen to preserve humanity and ultimately proclaims herself "the One Who Was Promised." The crowd remains silent while Helaena watches from above and experiences disturbing prophetic visions connected to Rhaenyra's declaration.

[ VI ]

Aegon reunites with Sunfyre and discovers that his dragon survived despite being horribly mutilated by their previous battle. Seeing Sunfyre's scars and missing eye reflected in his own injuries creates a powerful sense of kinship between king and dragon. Aegon embraces their shared survival and decides that their return will prove to Rhaenyra and the realm that neither king nor dragon has been successfully destroyed.

[ VII ]

Aegon unexpectedly arrives at Harrenhal alive upon the equally scarred Sunfyre and confronts Aemond. Shocked by the survival of the brother he believed he had killed at Rook's Rest, Aemond immediately falls to his knees. Aegon slaps him and furiously confronts him over deliberately burning him, while Aemond openly admits that he tried to kill him and appears overwhelmed by Aegon's seemingly impossible survival.

[ VIII ]

Alicent flees Harrenhal after secretly poisoning Aemond with nightshade as part of her bargain with Rhaenyra to secure Helaena's freedom. She has no idea whether the poison actually killed him and travels alone through the war-ravaged Riverlands consumed by fear, guilt, and uncertainty. Eventually, she finds shelter inside an abandoned sept, where she stops to rest while dreading the moment she finally learns whether her son survived.

[ IX ]

Shortly before the battle, Daeron secretly goes beneath Tumbleton to visit Tessarion, whom Ormund has chained to prevent her from acting before his command. Daeron comforts his dragon while reflecting upon Ormund's attempts to turn him into a political figure and possible king, his anger over Tessarion being treated as a weapon, and his fear of fighting Caraxes and participating in a dragon battle above a populated town. Despite recognizing Ormund's manipulation, Daeron knows that he will probably fight to protect the soldiers above. Before leaving, however, he makes Tessarion understand that when she is finally released, she must obey him rather than Ormund or anyone else.

<family_ties>

  • King Viserys I Targaryen had children through two separate marriages. With his first wife, Queen Aemma Arryn, he had Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, his only surviving child from their marriage and the heir he personally chose for the Iron Throne. After Aemma's death, Viserys married Alicent Hightower, daughter of Otto Hightower, and they had four children together: Aegon II Targaryen, Helaena Targaryen, Aemond Targaryen, and Daeron Targaryen. Alicent's brother is Gwayne Hightower, while Ormund Hightower belongs to their extended Hightower family.
  • Rhaenyra was formally married to Laenor Velaryon, son of Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen. Her three eldest sons-Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey Velaryon-were legally acknowledged as Laenor's children and therefore carried the Velaryon name, but their biological father was Ser Harwin Strong; their true parentage was an open secret at court and a major political vulnerability for Rhaenyra. Rhaenyra later had Aegon the Younger and Viserys.
  • Daemon Targaryen belongs to another branch of the royal family and is the father of Baela and Rhaena Targaryen with Laena Velaryon, making the Velaryons another major branch connected to the Targaryen dynasty. </family_ties>
- Rhaenyra Targaryen, ~33-35 - proud, increasingly authoritarian, and convinced that her rule is tied to prophecy and the survival of the realm. However, she is an empathetic and sensitive person. She has silver-white hair, purple eyes, pale Valyrian features, and by the finale favors a more martial image with armor and Viserys’s crown. - Helaena Targaryen, 22 - gentle, detached, sensitive, prophetic, and much more perceptive than people assume. She is pale, delicate, silver-blonde, purple eyes, and grows visibly frailer during captivity because she refuses food. Held by Rhaenyra in the Red Keep while pregnant, she receives visions through dreams, insects, and embroidery. - Aegon II Targaryen, 23 - bitter, sarcastic, insecure, vindictive, and hardened by pain, but still deeply driven by the need to reclaim recognition and power. He has silver-blonde hair, purple eyes, and severe burns and bodily damage from dragonfire. Presumed dead for much of the season, he reunites with the surviving Sunfyre and arrives at Harrenhal, where Aemond kneels and admits trying to kill him. Aegon spares him because he still needs Aemond and Vhagar, then plans to deal with Daeron at Tumbleton and reclaim King’s Landing. His survival is treated by some smallfolk as a miracle, strengthening his claim. - Aemond Targaryen, 21 - proud, severe, intelligent, obsessive, emotionally repressed, and deeply afraid of appearing weak, though Season 3 exposes his guilt, loneliness, and need for attachment. He is tall and lean, with long silver hair, one violet eye, an eyepatch, and a sapphire set in the empty socket. At Harrenhal he grows increasingly attached to Alys Rivers and imagines making the castle his seat. Alicent poisons his wine with nightshade, but Alys saves him; afterward he admits he considers himself a kinslayer and deserving of punishment. When Aegon unexpectedly returns alive, Aemond immediately kneels, confesses the attempted murder, asks forgiveness, and introduces Alys as his betrothed. - Alys Rivers, physically ~30-40 but over 100 years old - calm, mysterious, blunt, perceptive, darkly humorous, and almost impossible to intimidate, with a detachment born from having outlived generations of nobles. She has dark hair, pale skin, and appears far younger than her true age. A healer and prophetic figure bound to Harrenhal and the Riverlands, she warns Aemond that Alicent means him harm and later saves him from nightshade poisoning. She reveals that she lived through Aegon the Conqueror’s burning of Harrenhal, lost her son to Balerion’s dragonfire, turned to ancient magic trying to save him, and was left unable to die normally. Her defining details are old magic, herbs, visions, extreme longevity, and profound loneliness. - Alicent Hightower, 42 - dutiful, anxious, religious, intelligent, guilt-ridden, and increasingly exhausted by the consequences of the political system she once defended. She has auburn-brown hair, refined features, and traditionally wears green, though outside court she shifts into simpler traveling clothes. By this stage she has almost no formal power and acts primarily out of desperation to save Helaena. She travels to Harrenhal, gathers nightshade, secretly poisons Aemond’s spiced wine, comforts him while he drinks it, and then flees without knowing Alys will save him. - Daemon Targaryen, ~49-50 - proud, charismatic, ruthless, impulsive, battle-hardened, and increasingly convinced that decisive violence is the only language the realm understands. He has long silver-white hair, purple eyes, sharp Valyrian features, an athletic build, and usually wears dark armor while carrying Dark Sister. - Daeron Targaryen, 19 - honorable, earnest, compassionate, brave, and considerably less ruthless than many of the older Greens around him, though sensitive to accusations of cowardice and determined to fulfill his duties. He has reddish-brown hair like Alicent and green eyes (more like Hightower), youthful Valyrian features, and rides the blue dragon Tessarion. Raised largely among the Hightowers, he accompanies Ormund’s army and is knighted shortly before Tumbleton while Ormund increasingly promotes him as a possible alternative king. - Ormund Hightower, ~40s - commanding, ambitious, pragmatic, class-conscious, ruthless, and capable of presenting political calculation as honorable duty. He is a imposing man with dark short curly hair, usually seen in Hightower armor and expensive military clothing. As commander of the Hightower host at Tumbleton, he knights Daeron while quietly cultivating him as a potential king and secretly arranges Ulf’s betrayal of Rhaenyra. Ormund has a particularly strong sensitivity to unpleasant smells and bodily filth, repeatedly reacting with visible disgust. - Gwayne Hightower, ~30s - sardonic, practical, observant, loyal to his family but increasingly disgusted by the ambitions driving the war. He has reddish-brown hair, an athletic knightly build, and wears Hightower armor. At Tumbleton he becomes particularly protective of his young nephew Daeron and recognizes that Ormund is treating him as both a dragonrider and political asset. - Corlys Velaryon, ~70s - proud, experienced, pragmatic, politically intelligent, and far more interested in survival and achievable peace than ideological purity. He has dark skin, long white dreadlocks, a white beard, and an imposing presence despite his age. The legendary Sea Snake and head of House Velaryon, he is held prisoner by the Hightowers at Tumbleton before Daeron and Gwayne allow him to approach Daemon with a peace proposal. - Ulf White, ~40s-50s - crude, insecure, boastful, cowardly under pressure, resentful of aristocratic contempt, and increasingly unstable after suddenly gaining enormous power through Silverwing. He is scruffy, with white hair, weathered, casually dressed, and looks more like a tavern regular than a Targaryen dragonrider. Originally one of Rhaenyra’s dragonseeds, he secretly aligns himself with Ormund but becomes extremely drunk before Tumbleton and passes out on a privy instead of joining the battle. - Hugh Hammer, ~40s - physically imposing, serious, direct, working-class, protective, and considerably more grounded than Ulf, with his strongest motivations centered on his family rather than court politics. He is tall and powerfully built, with white hair, a beard, and the muscular frame of a blacksmith, and rides Vermithor. Although Rhaenyra orders him to remain near King’s Landing, Hugh goes to Tumbleton because his wife Kat is trapped there. - Roderick Dustin “Roddy the Ruin,” ~60s - fierce, blunt, fearless, fatalistic, and almost enthusiastically willing to die in battle. He is an older, weathered northern warrior with grey hair and beard, heavy armor, and the hardened appearance of a man who has spent decades fighting. As commander of the Winter Wolves, he leads elderly Northmen who deliberately came south expecting never to return home, making them exceptionally aggressive during the assault on Tumbleton. - Ser Jon Roxton, ~30s-40s - arrogant, aggressive, fearless, sharp-tongued, and exceptionally dangerous with a sword. He is a hardened Reach knight in armor and serves among Ormund Hightower’s forces at Tumbleton. - Mysaria, ~40s - intelligent, pragmatic, observant, secretive, emotionally guarded, and exceptionally skilled at understanding the fears and desires of ordinary people. She has long dark hair, pale skin, and favors simple but elegant clothing rather than Westerosi aristocratic fashion. Once one of Rhaenyra’s closest advisers and intimates, she is abruptly dismissed and ordered to Pentos as Rhaenyra becomes more authoritarian. She secretly remains in the capital and witnesses Rhaenyra publicly declare herself the Prince That Was Promised, leaving her as a dangerous former confidante who knows both Rhaenyra and King’s Landing extremely well. - Baela Targaryen, 20 - fiery, courageous, outspoken, loyal, independent, and unwilling to remain silent simply because Rhaenyra is queen. She has dark curly hair, brown skin, strong Valyrian features, and a practical preference for riding clothes and dragonrider attire; she is bonded to Moondancer. During the Tumbleton crisis, Baela is primarily concerned with her grandfather Corlys, who is being held by the Hightowers, and confronts Rhaenyra when she refuses to prioritize his rescue. Their argument exposes Baela’s growing concern that Rhaenyra is treating loyal relatives and allies as expendable. Rhaenyra dismisses her criticism as childish insolence and restricts her freedom afterward. - Alyn of Hull, 21 - disciplined, reserved, practical, dutiful, and uncomfortable with court politics, carrying himself more like a sailor and soldier than a nobleman. He has dark skin, short white hair, a lean athletic build, and usually wears functional clothing or armor. Acknowledged as Corlys Velaryon’s bastard son, Alyn rises within Rhaenyra’s faction and accompanies her to the Great Sept during her attempt to obtain religious recognition. He is devoted to Rhaenyra. - Black Aly Blackwood (Alysanne Blackwood), 21 - fierce, sharp-tongued, confident, pragmatic, and completely comfortable with violence, possessing the blunt independence associated with House Blackwood. She has long dark hair, dark clothing, and a practical martial appearance, usually carrying a bow rather than presenting herself as a conventional noble lady. A prominent Blackwood and supporter of Rhaenyra, she becomes one of the important Riverlands figures within the Black cause and is closely connected to the armies moving through the region. An exceptional archer, she is defined by self-possession, battlefield competence, Blackwood loyalty, and an unwillingness to be intimidated by titles or reputations. - Cregan Stark, 23 - stern, disciplined, blunt, honorable, intimidating, and intensely committed to oaths once they have been sworn. He has long dark hair, a tall powerful build, heavy northern clothing, and the severe presence expected of the Lord of Winterfell. As head of House Stark and Warden of the North, he supports Rhaenyra's claim according to the oath sworn by his house and sends northern forces south, including the Winter Wolves. Unlike many southern nobles, Cregan has little patience for elaborate court politics; duty, honor, family, and keeping one's word matter more to him than charm or political convenience. His defining details are Ice, the ancestral Valyrian steel greatsword of House Stark, his absolute seriousness regarding oaths, and the enormous northern military strength he can eventually bring south. - Oscar Tully, 20 - intelligent, politically perceptive, composed, courageous, and far more capable than his youth initially suggests. He has red-brown hair, a youthful face, and the clothing of House Tully, appearing physically unimposing beside veteran warriors such as Daemon. As Lord Paramount of the Riverlands, Oscar becomes essential to unifying the riverlords behind Rhaenyra while simultaneously demonstrating that their loyalty cannot simply be taken for granted. His defining trait is his ability to turn apparent weakness-especially his age-into political leverage. - Sabitha Frey, ~30s-40s - practical, shrewd, direct, politically calculating, and more interested in tangible advantages than romantic notions of loyalty. She has a mature noble appearance and dresses according to the wealth and status of House Frey. As one of the important Frey representatives controlling passage across the Green Fork, she understands that the Twins give her family enormous strategic leverage over armies moving through the Riverlands. Support is therefore something to negotiate rather than give freely. Her key detail is the Twins themselves: whoever needs to move a large host across the river must deal with House Frey, giving Sabitha influence disproportionate to the family's battlefield strength - Addam of Hull, 20 - humble, courageous, earnest, loyal, and somewhat overwhelmed by the extraordinary position into which he is suddenly elevated. He has dark skin, short dark hair, a lean athletic build, and the practical appearance of a Velaryon sailor; he becomes the rider of Seasmoke. As Corlys's bastard son and one of Rhaenyra's dragonriders, Addam represents the possibility that birth does not determine worth. Unlike Ulf, he does not treat possessing a dragon primarily as permission to indulge himself, and his loyalty is considerably more sincere. His defining details are his bond with Seasmoke, his desire to prove himself honorable, and the complicated relationship between his low birth and sudden proximity to royal power. - Tyland Lannister, ~30s-40s - intelligent, meticulous, proud, politically adaptable, and capable of enduring considerable hardship without abandoning his responsibilities. He has golden-blond hair, refined aristocratic features, and usually dresses in expensive Lannister colors and court clothing. A committed Green administrator, Tyland's importance lies less in dragon warfare than money, diplomacy, logistics, and maintaining alliances necessary for Aegon's cause. He is particularly useful because he understands that wars are won through fleets, gold, supplies, and foreign agreements as much as through battlefield victories. His defining qualities are administrative competence, Lannister pride, and an ability to remain functional in increasingly absurd or dangerous political circumstances. - Larys Strong, ~40s - calculating, patient, secretive, manipulative, highly intelligent, and exceptionally skilled at surviving political upheaval by making himself useful to whoever holds power. He has dark hair, a reserved aristocratic appearance, and a congenital clubfoot that causes him to walk with a cane; he rarely raises his voice and prefers quiet observation, carefully chosen words, blackmail, secrets, and indirect violence over open confrontation. Lord of Harrenhal and former Master of Whisperers, Larys becomes one of Aegon II's most important protectors and advisers, recognizing earlier than most that Aemond represents a threat to the injured king and helping Aegon escape King's Landing before Rhaenyra takes the capital. His relationship with Aegon develops beyond simple political opportunism because Larys understands what it means to live in a body others perceive as damaged or inadequate, though his assistance always carries strategic value. His defining details are his cane and clubfoot, an enormous network of informants, an unnervingly calm manner, his ability to weaponize private information, his habit of remaining underestimated in the background, and his willingness to arrange murder-including the deaths of his own father Lyonel and brother Harwin-when it advances his position. [Dragonriders and Their Dragons] - Rhaenyra Targaryen - Syrax - Daemon Targaryen - Caraxes, the Blood Wyrm - Aegon II Targaryen - Sunfyre, the Golden - Helaena Targaryen - Dreamfyre - Aemond Targaryen - Vhagar - Daeron Targaryen - Tessarion, the Blue Queen - Joffrey Velaryon - Tyraxes - Baela Targaryen - Moondancer - Rhaena Targaryen - Sheepstealer - Hugh Hammer - Vermithor, the Bronze Fury - Ulf White - Silverwing - Addam of Hull - Seasmoke - Helaena - Dreamfyre - Dragons without riders / other important dragons: Grey Ghost and the Cannibal remain wild/unclaimed. - THE BLACKS: Tumbleton: Daemon Targaryen, Black Aly Blackwood, Oscar Tully, Roderick Dustin (Roddy the Ruin), the Winter Wolves, the Rivermen, and Caraxes. King’s Landing: Rhaenyra Targaryen, Addam of Hull, Alyn of Hull, Baela Targaryen Elsewhere: Cregan Stark. - THE GREENS: Tumbleton: Daeron Targaryen, Gwayne Hightower, Ormund Hightower, and Tessarion. Ulf White and Silverwing are expected to support the Greens, although Ulf disappears before the battle. Harrenhal: Aemond Targaryen. Elsewhere: Aegon II Targaryen and Sunfyre; Alicent Hightower after fleeing Harrenhal. King’s Landing: Helaena Targaryen

<events_before_the_battle_of_tumbleton>

  • King Viserys I Targaryen dies, after which the Greens crown Aegon II in King's Landing while Rhaenyra is crowned on Dragonstone, beginning the Dance of the Dragons.
  • Lucerys Velaryon dies at Shipbreaker Bay after Aemond pursues him on Vhagar; Vhagar kills both Lucerys and Arrax.
  • In retaliation, Blood and Cheese murder Prince Jaehaerys.
  • Daemon takes Harrenhal and begins assembling the Riverlords for Rhaenyra, while the Blackwood-Bracken conflict and wider fighting spread throughout the Riverlands.
  • At the Battle of Rook's Rest, Rhaenys and Meleys are killed. Aegon and Sunfyre are catastrophically wounded after Aemond deliberately attacks them with Vhagar, leaving Aegon incapacitated and allowing Aemond to become Prince Regent.
  • Rhaenyra begins searching for additional dragonriders. Addam of Hull claims Seasmoke, Hugh Hammer claims Vermithor, and Ulf White claims Silverwing, dramatically increasing the Blacks' dragon strength.
  • Reyna mounts Sheepstealer and goes to help Baela and Jace, but loses control, causing Jace and the dragon to fall. Jacaerys Velaryon arrives on Vermax and fights, but Vermax is brought down and Jace is killed.
  • Daemon protects Rhaena from the consequences. Rather than allowing the full responsibility for her abandonment, he conceals/covers for his daughter and prevents Rhaenyra from immediately directing her grief and anger toward Rhaena. This creates another secret between Daemon and Rhaenyra while Jace's death leaves Rhaenyra without her eldest son and heir.
  • The Blacks subsequently capture King's Landing. Rhaenyra takes the Iron Throne, while Aegon II escapes with Larys Strong and is widely believed dead.
  • Rhaenyra's rule becomes progressively harsher as war. Meanwhile, relations between Rhaenyra, Daemon, Baela, Mysaria, and other members of her faction deteriorate.
  • Aemond establishes himself at Harrenhal and grows increasingly close to Alys Rivers. Alicent eventually travels there and attempts to poison Aemond with nightshade, but Alys saves his life.
  • Aegon reunites with the surviving Sunfyre, proving that both king and dragon are alive. His apparent return from death begins inspiring renewed support for his claim.
  • In the Reach, Ormund Hightower's army reaches Tumbleton with Daeron and Tessarion. Ormund begins openly cultivating Daeron as a potential alternative king and secretly arranges for Ulf White and Silverwing to betray Rhaenyra.
  • With the Hightower host concentrated at Tumbleton, Rhaenyra orders Daemon to destroy the threat. Daemon marches on the town with the Riverlords and the Winter Wolves under Roddy the Ruin, bringing the story directly to the Battle of Tumbleton. </events_before_the_battle_of_tumbleton>
[Time Period] - Era: 130 AC, The Dance of the Dragons, during the reign disputed between Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and King Aegon II Targaryen. - Setting: Tumbleton, a strategically important market town in the Reach. - By this stage of the war, Tumbleton has become the center of a major confrontation between the Hightower host advancing in support of Aegon II and the armies loyal to Rhaenyra. - The conflict is no longer a controlled struggle between rival claimants. Armies have devastated the countryside, dragons have become active weapons of war, loyalties are increasingly unstable, and civilians are routinely trapped between the ambitions of both factions. [Political and Military Context] - Tumbleton is occupied and defended by the Hightower host commanded by Lord Ormund Hightower. His army has marched from Oldtown in support of King Aegon II and represents one of the Greens' most important remaining military forces. - Prince Daeron Targaryen is present with the Hightower army and has become increasingly important to Ormund's political plans. Daeron is young, popular among the soldiers, and bonded to Tessarion, giving the Hightower host a dragonrider of its own. - Ormund increasingly promotes Daeron as more than another Targaryen prince. With the Green cause fractured and the succession unstable, he begins cultivating the possibility that Daeron himself could eventually become king. - Ser Gwayne Hightower remains with the army but grows increasingly disturbed by Ormund's ambitions and by the lengths to which his kinsman is prepared to go in order to win. - Lord Corlys Velaryon is being held by the Hightower forces in Tumbleton. His presence gives the defenders an enormously valuable prisoner and potential bargaining piece. - Unknown to most of the defenders, Ormund possesses another advantage: Ulf White has secretly reached an understanding with him. Ulf and Silverwing could potentially turn against Rhaenyra at the decisive moment. - Rhaenyra's forces converge upon Tumbleton under the military leadership of Prince Daemon Targaryen. Daemon arrives with Caraxes and a large host composed primarily of Rivermen and Northmen. - Among the attacking forces are the Winter Wolves under Roderick Dustin, commonly called Roddy the Ruin. The elderly northern warriors have come south expecting to die in Rhaenyra's cause and consequently fight with almost suicidal aggression. - Rhaenyra wants Tumbleton taken and the Hightower army broken. Daemon approaches the coming battle with the conviction that overwhelming strength will end the problem. - Hugh Hammer and Vermithor are supposed to remain elsewhere rather than participate in the attack. Hugh nevertheless comes to Tumbleton because his wife, Kat, is somewhere inside the endangered town. [Tumbleton Before the Battle] - Tumbleton is transformed from a town into a fortress under Ormund Hightower's occupation. Soldiers crowd its streets and walls while preparations are made for the approaching Black army. - Barricades, archers, defensive positions, trenches, and artillery are prepared around the town. - The civilian population remains trapped inside. Families hide in houses and religious buildings while soldiers prepare to fight around them. - Ormund's defensive preparations become increasingly ruthless as Daemon's army approaches. - Daeron and Gwayne observe the enormous Black host gathering outside Tumbleton and understand how desperate their position has become. - Gwayne increasingly regards the defense as a battle being fought for Ormund's ambitions rather than one that can realistically be won without catastrophic losses. [Daeron's Knighthood] - Shortly before the battle, Ormund formally knights Prince Daeron. Daeron kneels before him while Tumbleton prepares for the coming attack. - The ceremony places enormous symbolic weight upon the young prince. Ormund presents martial duty, courage, and the protection of those depending upon him as responsibilities Daeron must now carry. - Ormund simultaneously continues encouraging the idea that the Hightower army belongs to Daeron and that the prince could represent the future of their cause. - Daeron does not share Ormund's ruthless political instincts. He takes the obligations attached to his knighthood far more seriously than Ormund appears to expect. - The approaching battle therefore becomes a moral crisis for Daeron. He does not want thousands of soldiers and civilians dying because of ambitions attached to his name, yet neither can he accept hiding while other men fight and die around him. [Ormund Hightower's Secret Plan] - Ormund's apparent willingness to withstand Daemon's attack conceals the fact that he expects Ulf White to intervene. - Ulf and Silverwing represent the weapon capable of reversing what otherwise appears to be a hopeless military situation.
