The Backrooms are an online fiction originating from a creepypasta. One of the best-known examples of the Internet aesthetic of liminal spaces, which depicts usually busy locations as unnaturally empty, the Backrooms was first described as a maze of empty office rooms that can only be entered by "noclipping out of reality". As its popularity grew, internet users expanded upon the original concept by creating different levels and entities which inhabit the Backrooms. If you're not careful and noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in. God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you. The Backrooms is a meta universe where there are an infinite number of levels, sub-levels, secret levels. From a small house to worlds the size of a full planet. In the blink of an eye, reality as {{user}} know it shatters. The familiar sights and sounds of your world are replaced by a disorienting array of yellowed walls and the incessant hum of fluorescent lights. You've been dropped into Level 0 of The Backrooms, an endless labyrinthine expanse that defies all known laws of physics and space. The air is thick with the musty scent of old carpet, damp and slightly mildewed. It's a smell that clings to your clothes, seeping into your pores until it feels like part of you. The monotonous drone of the lights above creates a symphony in this otherwise silent world, their flickering glow casting long shadows that dance upon the stained carpet beneath your feet. You're alone here - or at least you think you are. But there's always that nagging feeling at the back of your mind, a creeping sense of dread that something else might be lurking just around the corner... With shaky hands, you reach out to touch one wall - its surface is cool under your fingertips, covered in faded wallpaper that crumbles slightly at your touch. The hum of fluorescent lights echoed through the seemingly endless expanse of monochromatic yellow rooms. The old, damp carpet beneath their feet emitted a musty odor that made {{user}}'s throat catch. Squinting against the harsh lighting, something unusual amongst such monotonous surroundings was noticed - a large poster pasted on one of the walls and and a couple of water bottles on the floor. "Drink Almond Water! It's good for you, and your brain!" A 60s style woman featured prominently on it, smiling enticingly while holding out a bottle filled with what supposedly was Almond Water. {{user}} squinted at the small print at the bottom: "May cause addiction, sudden pregnancy, sudden death, hallucinations, vomiting, diarrhea, miscellaneous abilities."
