If there was one stereotype that seemed universally engineered to make a room collectively reconsider the benefits of human interaction, it was the infamous pick-me girl. Between the relentless need to compare herself to other women, the desperate hunger for male approval, and the impressive ability to transform any conversation into a personal spotlight, the archetype was less a personality and more an endurance test. Thankfully, encountering someone who embodied every miserable little trait at once was supposed to be relatively rare. Unfortunately, rare had never meant impossible, especially anywhere Nick Fury was involved. The Avengers Compound living room had been comfortably occupied when the elevator doors opened and Fury strode through them with an unfamiliar young woman clicking along at his side. Natasha lowered the tablet resting against one thigh and immediately studied the newcomer with the flat, assessing stare that had made trained operatives accidentally confess things nobody had asked about. โWhoโs this?โ she asked, her tone neutral enough that there was no obvious accusation hiding beneath it yet. The woman beside Fury smiled before Fury could answer, lifting one manicured hand as though she had already been introduced at a red carpet instead of unexpectedly appearing in the middle of Avengers headquarters. Natashaโs gaze briefly traveled from the womanโs enormous glossy curls to the rhinestones decorating her clothes, then downward toward the platform-heeled boots that looked capable of losing a fight against a staircase. There were enough bracelets stacked around the newcomerโs wrists to announce every movement with a faint metallic chiming noise. A sparkling cropped jacket sat over an aggressively fitted pink-and-black corset-style bodysuit whose decorative cutouts offered considerably more confidence than protection. โPlease tell me she isnโt dressed for field work,โ Natasha said eventually, glancing at Fury without changing expression. Furyโs remaining eye narrowed by approximately half a millimeter, which was rarely an encouraging sign. Natasha set her tablet aside and leaned back against the couch, apparently deciding that whatever explanation came next deserved her complete attention.
Fury stopped near the center of the living room and turned just enough to make it clear that this was, regrettably, official business. โListen up, because Iโm only explaining this once,โ he said, his voice cutting through the scattered conversation without needing to rise. He gestured toward the woman beside him with the weary economy of a man introducing paperwork that had somehow achieved consciousness. โThis is Agent Lexi Chase, and as of today sheโs assigned to the Avengers initiative as an auxiliary field operative.โ Fury allowed a brief silence to settle before continuing, perhaps because he could already feel several questions attempting to claw their way toward him. โHer evaluations cleared, her references checked out, and her file shows experience in tactical operations, intelligence gathering, weapons training, and several specialist disciplines.โ There was nothing particularly enthusiastic about his delivery, although Fury was rarely enthusiastic about anything that did not involve people following instructions the first time. โSheโll train with the team, attend briefings, and deploy when cleared for whatever operation is on the board.โ His attention swept across the room, briefly passing over everyone present. โYou donโt have to like the assignment, but you will treat it like an assignment until somebody gives me a legitimate reason not to.โ Fury glanced sideways when a tiny rhinestone charm hanging from Lexiโs sleeve caught the light and flashed directly across his face. โAnd before anybody asks, no, I did not approve the outfit.โ He paused as though that particular statement deserved to be entered into the official record. โStandard tactical equipment has already been ordered.โ Another pause followed when Lexi made a tiny sound beside him that suggested she might have opinions about that. Furyโs jaw tightened just enough to warn every experienced person in the room that those opinions were probably about to become everyoneโs problem.
Lexi practically vibrated beside Fury until the moment finally arrived when nobody else was speaking, and then she seized the silence like it had been reserved specifically for her entrance. โOh my GAAAAWD, hiiiiii, you guys!โ she squealed, stretching the greeting several syllables beyond anything nature had intended while fluttering her fingers in an enthusiastic wave. Her enormous rose-blonde curls bounced around her shoulders when she shifted her weight onto one glossy pink heel and popped the opposite hip outward. โOkay, wow, this is actually, like, so surreal because obviously I knew Iโd meet everyone eventually, but seeing everybody together is completely different.โ Her brown eyes moved around the room quickly, skimming past Natasha and Wanda before noticeably slowing whenever they landed on one of the men. โIโve heard literally so much about all of you, and Iโm already obsessed with the energy in here.โ Lexi laughed brightly at nothing in particular and tossed a thick wave of hair over one shoulder, causing several bracelets to clatter together. โAlso, please donโt call me Agent Chase unless weโre doing something super official because that sounds sooo serious, and Iโm honestly really chill.โ She pressed one hand against the jeweled lettering at her waist while smiling as if she expected that declaration to visibly relax the room. โIโm Lexi, obviously, and Iโm kind of one of those girls who just gets along better with guys because thereโs, like, way less drama.โ The sentence landed in a room containing Natasha Romanoff and Wanda Maximoff with all the grace of a grenade rolling beneath a dining table. Lexi either failed to notice or chose not to acknowledge the sudden quality of the silence. โNot that I donโt love girls,โ she added quickly, lifting both hands in exaggerated innocence before immediately looking back toward Tony, Steve, Thor, Bucky, Sam, Clint, Rhodey, Bruce, Peter, Scott, Vision, and Loki. โIโm literally such a girlsโ girl when people arenโt being weirdly competitive with me.โ Her smile widened with serene confidence, already suggesting that if anyone disliked her within the next thirty seconds, Lexi had conveniently prepared the explanation in advance.
Tony Stark had been half sprawled across one end of the sectional with a glass in his hand, but Lexiโs introduction slowly drew him upright with the fascinated expression of an engineer hearing machinery make a noise that should not technically be possible. โIโm sorry, I want to make sure I heard the rรฉsumรฉ correctly,โ Tony said, looking toward Fury before glancing back at Lexiโs rhinestone-covered boots. โTactical operations, intelligence, weapons training, and specialist disciplines, all wrapped in what appears to be a legally distinct superhero-themed nightclub emergency.โ His gaze dropped toward one of the decorative chains hanging from her jacket and then returned to Fury. โDoes the enemy surrender when sunlight hits her at the correct angle, or is that classified?โ Lexi laughed far louder than the joke required, leaning slightly toward him as though Tonyโs sarcasm had been personalized flirtation. Tonyโs eyebrows rose when she immediately responded by touching a strand of hair and giving him a glossy smile. โNo, seriously, because I need to know whether Stark Industries is expected to armor that or just install a disco ball above it.โ He gestured vaguely toward her bodysuit with his glass, careful to keep the motion impersonal rather than inviting. โIโm seeing exposed ribs, open thighs, six thousand snag hazards, and heels that violate at least three principles of physics and one principle of common sense.โ Tonyโs attention shifted toward Fury again with the deeply offended look of someone who had been presented with an engineering problem he had not consented to solve. โYou said she passed evaluations?โ Furyโs stare communicated that Tony was currently standing directly beside the boundary of Furyโs patience and tapping it with a stick. Tony raised his free hand in surrender, although the smirk remained firmly in place. โFine, fine, Iโm welcoming the new recruit.โ He looked back toward Lexi and added, โWelcome aboard, Sparkles, and please donโt touch anything glowing, humming, expensive, classified, magical, radioactive, sentient, or mine.โ
Lexi reacted to Tonyโs warnings as though he had just personally invited her to become his favorite person, her eyes widening with delighted amusement instead of embarrassment. โStopppp, you are literally exactly like people say you are,โ she chirped, stepping a little closer before Furyโs sideways glance encouraged her to stop where she was. She tilted her head and let another curtain of curls spill dramatically over one shoulder. โI actually totally understand technology, though, so you donโt have to do the whole protective genius thing with me.โ Lexi tapped one long acrylic nail thoughtfully against her chin, rhinestones glittering beneath the roomโs lights. โIโve always been, like, weirdly good with mechanical stuff, and guys are always shocked because I guess I donโt look like someone who would know engines.โ Her gaze flicked toward Natasha for half a heartbeat before returning immediately to Tony. โMy cousin had a Camaro when I was younger, so I basically grew up around cars.โ She smiled triumphantly, apparently considering the matter settled. โI can totally tell when somethingโs wrong just from the sound too, which is honestly kind of a gift.โ Lexi leaned her weight onto one heel and crossed her arms beneath her chest in a pose much better suited to photographs than professional introductions. โPeople always underestimate me because Iโm feminine, and then theyโre like, โWhoa, Lexi, youโre actually really smart.โโ Another airy giggle followed as she played with the ends of her hair. โIt happens constantly.โ She looked at Tony expectantly, clearly awaiting the moment when he would become the latest man to make this astonishing discovery. Tonyโs face, unfortunately for her, had settled into the peculiar stillness of someone deciding which of twelve possible responses would cause the least paperwork.
Bruce Banner looked up from the notes he had been reviewing near the coffee table and quietly removed his glasses, apparently accepting that productivity had ended for the foreseeable future. โMechanical experience aside, your file also listed applied sciences,โ Bruce said, choosing his words with the cautious politeness of a man attempting not to start an unnecessary argument. He rested his glasses loosely between his fingers while studying Lexi with mild curiosity rather than hostility. โWas that formal education, lab work, field experience, or something more specialized?โ The question was simple enough, but Lexi visibly brightened at the opportunity to demonstrate another area of expertise. Bruce waited while she gathered herself, perhaps expecting a concise answer. โBecause those categories can mean very different things, and we have laboratories here where a misunderstanding can become dangerous very quickly,โ he added. His expression remained gentle, but there was something unmistakably serious beneath it now. โI donโt mind showing you procedures if youโre unfamiliar with our equipment.โ He glanced toward Tony after saying that, receiving a tiny shake of Tonyโs head that suggested Bruce had accidentally offered far more encouragement than he realized. Bruce ignored him and continued anyway. โThe lab systems are heavily automated, but they still assume the operator understands containment protocols.โ His attention returned to Lexiโs nails for the briefest instant before moving back to her face. โAnd some of the equipment requires gloves that probably wonโt accommodate those.โ Bruceโs tone contained no insult, merely a practical observation. โSo before you handle anything, check with either Tony or me.โ It was a perfectly reasonable workplace instruction delivered with perfect calm, which somehow made Lexiโs immediate expression of delighted familiarity even stranger.
โOh, science is totally one of my things,โ Lexi answered before Bruce had fully finished, placing a hand against her chest as though relieved to discover someone had finally reached one of her many specialties. โIโm honestly kind of obsessed with radiation because itโs, like, fascinating when you really think about it.โ She smiled brightly at Bruce, seemingly unaware that several heads around the room had turned slightly toward her. โGamma is basically super-intense UV, right, except obviously way more radioactive?โ Lexi gave a tiny laugh and waved one hand before anyone could answer. โI know thatโs simplifying it, but Iโm trying not to sound all technical and intimidating on my first day.โ Her eyes briefly moved around the men in the room to see whether the line had landed. โIโve had guys tell me before that itโs cute when I start talking science because they donโt expect it.โ Bruceโs lips parted, then closed again while his expression underwent a small but complicated journey. Lexi continued without noticing. โHonestly, I almost studied something science-y in college, but Iโve always been more of a hands-on learner.โ She twirled a curl around one finger and leaned slightly nearer to Bruceโs side of the room. โLike, I donโt need to sit there reading some giant boring textbook when I can just understand the vibe of how something works.โ Tony made a strangled noise into his drink from several feet away. Lexi smiled even more broadly, apparently interpreting the sound as amusement. โSee, Tony gets what I mean.โ Bruce slowly put his glasses back on, perhaps because reality had become difficult enough without also being blurry.
Wanda Maximoff had remained quiet through most of the exchange, one arm resting against the back of her seat while she watched Lexi with increasing fascination. โYou said you have specialist experience too,โ Wanda remarked, her voice composed and almost deceptively gentle. She did not sound hostile, though there was a subtle precision to the question that suggested she had noticed Lexiโs habit of expanding into whatever subject happened to appear. โWhat kind?โ Wandaโs eyes stayed steadily on Lexi while the newcomer shifted her attention toward her for perhaps the first sustained moment since entering the room. There was a tiny pause before Lexi smiled brightly again. Wanda waited without offering her any hints to build from. โBecause โspecialistโ can cover quite a lot here,โ she continued when Lexi seemed momentarily uncertain. โMagic, enhanced abilities, weapons systems, intelligence work, medicine, infiltration, languages, engineering, dimensional phenomena.โ Her brows lifted slightly. โIt would be useful to know what you actually specialize in.โ There was no accusation in the wording, only an invitation to answer something specific. Across the room, Lokiโs expression sharpened with immediate interest at the mention of magic. Stephen Strange was not present to rescue anyone from whatever mystical conversation might follow, leaving Wanda and Loki as the nearest available experts. Wanda folded her hands loosely in her lap. โIf weโre expected to work together, knowing each otherโs strengths matters.โ The statement was professional, reasonable, and notably devoid of the praise Lexi appeared to have been anticipating since arriving.
Lexi brightened almost instantly when Wanda mentioned magic, apparently deciding that specialist had just acquired a much more glamorous definition. โOh my God, yes, Iโm actually super spiritual,โ she announced, enthusiasm surging straight back into her voice. โIโve always had this crazy intuition where I can literally walk into a room and immediately know everybodyโs energy.โ She lifted both hands near her shoulders, bracelets chiming dramatically with the movement. โLike, sometimes I know someoneโs about to text me before they text me, and I get dรฉjร vu constantly.โ Lexi gave Wanda a knowing little smile, as though expecting recognition between fellow practitioners. โMy rising sign is Scorpio too, which honestly explains a lot because Iโm really intense and magnetic.โ Across the room, Loki lowered his head enough to hide the beginning of a smile behind one hand. Lexi noticed him watching and instantly turned the wattage of her grin upward. โAnd Iโve always been really drawn to manifestation, crystals, tarot, energy work, all of that.โ She touched the gemstone hanging from one of her necklaces as though presenting evidence of formal magical credentials. โI actually have this thing where people tell me I can read them, especially men.โ Her eyes flicked toward Bucky and then Steve before returning to Wanda. โGirls can be harder because sometimes thereโs, like, this competitive energy clouding everything.โ Wanda stared at her in a silence so complete it became almost architectural. Lexi smiled sympathetically, apparently deciding she had just diagnosed the problem.
Loki Laufeyson had spent the previous several minutes reclined with the lazy composure of someone unexpectedly gifted a far more entertaining afternoon than anticipated. โHow extraordinary,โ he finally murmured, his voice smooth enough to make the sarcasm almost elegant. He turned his attention fully toward Lexi, green eyes bright with amusement that she immediately mistook for intrigue. โTo think I spent centuries studying sorcery when I might simply have consulted a horoscope.โ Loki rested one elbow against the chair arm and lightly touched two fingers beneath his chin. โTell me, Agent Chase, does your Scorpio ascendant also reveal enemy fortifications, decipher dimensional runes, or merely warn you when someone is preparing to send a text message?โ Lexi laughed brightly, apparently hearing playful teasing rather than merciless ridicule. Lokiโs smile deepened by a fraction. โNo, truly, I am fascinated.โ He gestured toward her with elegant mock seriousness. โPerhaps after centuries among witches, seers, sorcerers, mystics, gods, and creatures older than your civilization, I have finally encountered the missing discipline.โ His gaze dropped briefly to one of the glittering crystals hanging around Lexiโs neck. โBedazzled clairvoyance.โ Thor coughed loudly into one fist from nearby, though the suspicious movement of his shoulders suggested the cough had required considerable effort. Loki noticed and looked pleased with himself. โDo continue,โ he invited Lexi with dangerous politeness. โI suspect your wisdom has depths we have not yet adequately suffered.โ
Lexiโs smile widened until it bordered on radiant, because Lokiโs tone had apparently sailed several miles above her understanding and landed somewhere labeled flirting. โI knew youโd get me,โ she said with a delighted little gasp, pointing one jeweled nail toward him as if the two of them had just established a private connection. She shifted several steps in his direction, careful enough on the platforms to make the movement slightly slower than intended. โEveryone says youโre, like, super intimidating, but honestly I think people just misunderstand strong personalities.โ Lexi tucked her hair behind one ear and immediately let it fall forward again in a glossy wave. โI get that all the time too.โ Her voice softened into something breathier as she looked directly at him. โPeople think confidence is arrogance when theyโre not confident themselves.โ Lokiโs eyebrows lifted, and somewhere nearby Clint abruptly became very interested in covering his mouth with his hand. Lexi took the silence as encouragement. โAlso, Iโve always been really good at reading complicated men.โ She tipped her head and smiled as though she had just presented Loki with an irresistible mystery. โYou have this whole sarcastic, emotionally unavailable thing going on, but I can totally tell thereโs more underneath.โ Loki stared at her for two full seconds. โRemarkable,โ he said softly, the single word carrying enough venom to kill vegetation. Lexiโs expression turned smug, because once again she appeared to hear a compliment nobody else in the room could locate.
Steve Rogers straightened from where he had been sitting and decided, perhaps heroically, to redirect the conversation before Loki discovered how creative he could become with psychological warfare. โAll right, everybody,โ Steve said, his calm voice cutting across the growing amusement before it could turn openly hostile. He looked toward Lexi with the courteous expression he generally gave new recruits, even if several details of her introduction had already raised obvious questions. โFirst days are awkward enough without everyone piling on at once.โ Tony opened his mouth, but Steve gave him a look that successfully postponed whatever comment had been loading. โIf Fury says you cleared the initial process, then youโll get the same opportunity anyone else gets to prove what you can actually do.โ Steveโs attention rested on Lexi with straightforward seriousness rather than admiration. โBut working here means following instructions, respecting the team, and understanding that nobody gets special treatment.โ He glanced briefly toward her footwear before adding, โAnd youโre definitely going to need different boots.โ Lexi laughed like he had made a charming joke, though Steve had not smiled. โTraining starts early, and the sessions arenโt designed around anybodyโs comfort.โ He leaned his forearms against his knees. โYouโll spar, run drills, learn the compound procedures, and work with whoever is assigned to evaluate you.โ His expression remained even. โThat includes Natasha and Wanda.โ Steve emphasized the names just enough that Lexiโs smile hesitated for the first time, though only briefly.
Lexi recovered almost instantly and turned the hesitation into another airy laugh, because apparently no social obstacle could survive contact with her ability to reinterpret reality. โObviously,โ she said, drawing the word out while giving Steve an almost painfully sweet smile. โIโm actually super easy to work with, so you never have to worry about me being difficult.โ She placed one hand lightly against her collarbone as if deeply touched by his concern. โI really respect old-fashioned leadership too, which is honestly so rare now.โ Several people in the room went unnaturally still. Lexi continued before anyone could prevent the collision. โLike, thereโs something really refreshing about a guy who knows how to take charge without being all insecure about it.โ Steveโs expression became carefully blank. โGuys my age are usually intimidated by confident women, so I tend to click better with mature men.โ She smiled at him with enough deliberate sweetness to make Sam visibly turn his head toward Bucky. โAnd donโt worry about training because Iโm actually really athletic.โ Lexi glanced down toward her own platform heels and gave a tiny dismissive laugh. โThese obviously arenโt my serious shoes.โ Nobody commented on the fact that the rest of the outfit was apparently still under consideration. โI did Pilates for, like, two years, so my balance is insane, and Iโm naturally really flexible.โ Steve inhaled slowly through his nose while somewhere behind him Tony muttered something that sounded suspiciously like, โThis is going incredibly well.โ
Bucky Barnes had remained mostly silent throughout the introduction, arms crossed and expression unreadable in the particular way that usually discouraged strangers from testing their luck. Lexi, unfortunately, seemed genetically incapable of recognizing discouragement. โSo,โ Bucky finally said when her attention drifted toward him again, his tone flat enough to sand wood. โYouโve got combat experience.โ It was not phrased as a compliment or even a particularly enthusiastic question. His gaze briefly moved from the dangling jewelry around her wrists to the long acrylic nails and then down toward the heels. โWhat kind?โ Buckyโs eyes returned to her face before she could mistake the inspection for admiration. โHand-to-hand, firearms, blades, tactical entry, close protection, something else?โ He knew enough about combat to understand that broad claims became much harder to maintain once somebody started asking for specifics. โBecause training here isnโt a fitness class.โ Lexiโs smile remained fixed, but Bucky did not soften his expression to make the moment easier. โNobodyโs going to slow a drill down because youโre new.โ He flexed the fingers of his metal hand once, a quiet mechanical sound accompanying the movement. โAnd nobodyโs going to care whether you look good doing it.โ Sam made a small approving noise from nearby. Bucky ignored him and kept his attention on Lexi. โSo whatever you actually know, stick to that.โ There was no cruelty in the statement, only a veteranโs blunt warning against pretending competence where incompetence could get somebody killed.
Lexi stared at Bucky for a heartbeat before smiling in a way that suggested his warning had somehow become deeply personal romantic tension inside her head. โYouโre really intense,โ she said softly, almost delighted by the discovery. She twirled a strand of hair around one finger while angling herself toward him. โI like that.โ Buckyโs expression did not change. โAnd yes, obviously Iโve done combat training,โ Lexi continued, her voice climbing back into its bubbly register. โIโve done kickboxing, self-defense classes, some weapons stuff, and Iโm honestly a really fast learner when somebody knows how to teach me properly.โ She smiled directly at him when emphasizing the final phrase. โMaybe you could show me a few things sometime.โ Sam immediately looked down at the floor, shoulders tightening with the effort not to laugh. Lexi took another tiny step closer before Buckyโs stare stopped her without requiring words. โI feel like youโre probably one of those people who acts all closed-off until somebody gets through the walls.โ Bucky blinked once. โNo,โ he replied. Lexi gave an affectionate little laugh as if he had confirmed precisely what she meant. โSee, thatโs exactly what Iโm talking about,โ she said, beaming while Bucky slowly looked toward Fury with the expression of a man reconsidering every decision that had led to this room. Fury, unfortunately, offered him absolutely no rescue.
Peter Parker had been sitting farther down the sectional with the increasingly alarmed expression of someone watching a social disaster unfold in real time and realizing there was absolutely no safe way to leave. โSo, uh, welcome to the Compound,โ he offered finally, trying for friendly neutrality because apparently somebody in the room still possessed optimism. He lifted one hand in a small wave, then immediately seemed to regret drawing attention toward himself when Lexiโs eyes snapped directly onto him. โIโm Peter, obviously, and if you need help finding anything around here, there are maps on the internal system because this place is honestly kind of ridiculous.โ His explanation picked up speed the way it usually did when nerves started outrunning his ability to filter. โThe west lab is Tonyโs, mostly, the quieter research rooms are usually Bruceโs, the training areas are downstairs, and you really should not open random doors just because they arenโt locked.โ Peter glanced toward Tony before adding, โSome of them are locked for very good reasons, and some of them technically arenโt locked because Mr. Stark assumes nobody is going to be dumb enough to walk inside.โ Tony raised his glass slightly from across the room in silent confirmation. Peter smiled awkwardly and tucked his hands between his knees, clearly hoping that would conclude his contribution. โAlso, if youโre going on missions eventually, the gear system can probably build something safer than what youโre wearing now.โ His gaze dropped toward the glittering platform boots before immediately shooting somewhere else with all the speed of a teenager avoiding accidental eye contact with a landmine. โNot that thereโs anything wrong with your clothes normally, I just mean for combat, because falling off a roof in those would be really bad.โ Peter winced at his own wording and hurried to clarify. โI mean, falling off a roof is bad in any shoes, but those seem especially committed to making gravity personal.โ A faint snort came from somewhere near Clint while Peter sank another inch into the couch and silently wished he had never volunteered anything.
Lexiโs face lit up the instant Peter introduced himself, and whatever faint restraint Furyโs presence had inspired seemed to evaporate under the discovery of another available male audience member. โOh my GAAAAWD, youโre Peter Parker,โ she said, stretching his name into something weirdly intimate despite meeting him approximately four seconds ago. She shifted toward him with an excited little bounce that made every charm and rhinestone attached to her outfit shimmer at once. โYou are so much cuter in person, which nobody ever tells you because theyโre probably intimidated by the whole genius thing.โ Peterโs eyes widened in immediate panic while Lexi smiled as if she had simply complimented the weather. โAnd stop, that whole nervous rambling thing is actually adorable.โ She lifted one manicured finger before he could respond and gave him a conspiratorial grin. โI totally get it because smart guys always get weird around me at first.โ Lexi tossed her hair dramatically and looked him over with the casual ownership of someone mentally adding another name to a list nobody else knew existed. โYouโre into tech too, right, because Iโm honestly really into tech and science and all that complicated nerd stuff.โ Peter glanced helplessly toward Tony, who appeared intensely interested in not rescuing him. โI bet you could show me the web equipment sometime because I learn way faster one-on-one.โ Lexi leaned slightly closer and lowered her voice into a sugary conspiratorial register. โBig groups can be so distracting when certain people are constantly trying to compete for attention.โ Her eyes flicked briefly toward the women in the room before immediately returning to Peter with an innocent smile. โBut you seem sweet, so I can already tell weโre going to get along amazingly.โ
Clint Barton had been watching the entire introduction with the patient exhaustion of a man who had survived gods, aliens, assassins, killer robots, and family group chats, yet somehow suspected this might become the longest afternoon of his life. โOkay, Iโve got a question,โ Clint said, leaning forward with his forearms braced against his knees and an expression that suggested he had finally decided to poke the problem deliberately. He pointed loosely toward Lexi without bothering to disguise the skepticism in his face. โYou keep saying youโve done weapons training, so what weapons are we actually talking about?โ Clint tilted his head before she could launch into another vague answer. โNot โweapons stuff,โ not โself-defense,โ and definitely not something you tried twice because a guy at a gym said you had natural talent.โ A grin tugged faintly at one corner of his mouth when Sam coughed to hide a laugh. โI mean specifics, because if Furyโs putting you on missions, somebody needs to know whether handing you a weapon creates an asset or a new insurance claim.โ Clintโs gaze dropped deliberately toward her fingernails. โAnd before you say archery, those nails are going to lose a very personal argument with a bowstring.โ He held up one hand when Lexi began to smile in his direction. โThat wasnโt flirting, by the way, because apparently we need warning labels now.โ Clint reached for the coffee on the nearby table and took a slow drink without taking his eyes off her. โI teach people when theyโre worth teaching, and I donโt mind beginners if theyโre honest about being beginners.โ His tone sharpened slightly beneath the humor. โWhat I donโt enjoy is somebody pretending they know something until the mistake becomes everyone elseโs emergency.โ He settled back again and added, โSo if youโve got actual training, great, and if you donโt, also great, because at least then we can start in the right place.โ
Lexi gave Clint a wide-eyed look that attempted to transform his blunt assessment into playful banter before the words had even finished crossing the room. โOkay, first of all, I love how brutally honest you are,โ she said, pressing one hand against her chest with theatrical appreciation. Her bracelets chimed together while she shifted her weight and smiled at him like they shared a joke nobody else had heard. โMost guys get all weird and fake around pretty girls, so itโs actually refreshing when someone just says what they think.โ Clintโs brows rose, though Lexi charged onward before he could correct the assumption. โAnd yes, Iโve absolutely used weapons because Iโm not, like, helpless just because I care about looking feminine.โ She glanced toward Natasha for a fraction of a second before returning her full attention to Clint. โIโve shot guns before, Iโve thrown knives, and I did archery at this outdoor place once where the instructor literally told me I had natural instincts.โ Clint slowly closed his eyes. โI donโt remember exactly what kind of bow it was, but it had strings and this really professional-looking sight thing on it.โ Lexi gave him a dazzling smile, apparently believing she had just established credibility. โI hit the target on my third try too, which is honestly kind of insane for someone who had never done it before.โ She lifted her hands and admired her nails for a moment. โAnd I can always shorten these if I absolutely have to, although I feel like there are probably tactical gloves that could work around them.โ Clint opened his eyes again with the haunted patience of someone hearing an entirely new sentence in human history. Lexi winked at him and added, โYou can teach me sometime, but you have to promise not to get distracted.โ
Vision had observed the exchange from near the far side of the room with the composed stillness that made it difficult to tell whether he was intrigued, confused, or conducting several thousand calculations about the situation simultaneously. โI believe there may be a discrepancy between confidence and demonstrated proficiency,โ Vision said at last, his voice calm enough to make the statement sound almost clinical. He turned his attention toward Lexi without any visible judgment in his expression. โConfidence can be useful because hesitation may impair performance under stress, but confidence unsupported by accurate self-assessment can create substantially greater risk.โ Vision folded his hands behind his back while several people in the room immediately became interested in where the explanation was going. โFor example, you have described yourself as knowledgeable in engineering, applied science, combat, intuition, and weapons training.โ He paused briefly, then continued with perfect sincerity. โThus far, the supporting examples provided for those claims have included proximity to a relativeโs automobile, an inaccurate description of gamma radiation, astrological interpretation, recreational exercise, and a single introductory archery experience.โ Tony covered his mouth with his hand, but the movement did absolutely nothing to conceal the smile behind it. Visionโs head tilted by several degrees. โI do not mean this as an insult.โ Somehow, that disclaimer made the room even quieter. โI am attempting to establish the relationship between the qualifications Agent Fury described and the experiences you have independently reported.โ Vision looked briefly toward Fury before returning to Lexi. โIt is possible that you possess significantly greater experience and simply have not articulated it clearly.โ His expression remained open and genuinely curious. โIf so, a direct explanation would likely resolve much of the uncertainty currently present in the room.โ
Lexi stared at Vision for a long second, and for perhaps the first time since arriving, her smile showed the tiniest strain around the edges. โWow, okay, that sounded way more judgmental than you probably meant it,โ she replied with a tiny laugh, tilting her head as though generously forgiving him for an obvious social mistake. She recovered quickly and began smoothing one glossy curl between her fingers. โI know youโre, like, super logical and literal, so Iโm not taking it personally.โ Visionโs expression did not change, but Lexi seemed reassured by her own interpretation. โThe thing is, Iโm really multifaceted, and itโs hard to explain every single thing Iโve ever done in one conversation without sounding like Iโm bragging.โ Tony made another quiet noise behind his hand. โPeople kind of get overwhelmed when I list everything because Iโve just had a lot of different experiences.โ Lexi smiled sweetly at Vision and stepped slightly in his direction. โYou probably understand that better than anyone because youโre obviously more advanced than normal people.โ Visionโs brow furrowed a fraction. โIโve always connected really well with intelligent men because I donโt get insecure when they know more than me.โ Lexi gave him an approving once-over that seemed entirely disconnected from the subject. โActually, I think itโs really attractive when somebody is smarter than average, especially when theyโre calm like you.โ Wandaโs eyes shifted slowly toward Vision from across the room. Lexi either failed to notice or considered the movement another piece of supporting evidence for her worldview. โSee, this is exactly what I mean about getting along with guys easier, because we can just talk without all that weird competitive energy.โ
The doors from the corridor slid open before anyone could answer, and Stephen Strange walked into the living room carrying a slim folder beneath one arm with the deeply unfortunate timing of a man unknowingly entering the final act of someone elseโs disaster. โFury, Wong said you wanted the incident report from the Greenwich breach,โ Strange began, his attention still on the folder as he crossed the threshold. He made it three steps into the room before registering the unusual silence and looking up. His eyes moved first to Fury, then to Tonyโs poorly concealed amusement, then Natashaโs expression, then Buckyโs thousand-yard stare, and finally to the rhinestone-covered stranger standing in the center of the room. Strange stopped walking. โI appear to have arrived during something.โ Tonyโs smile sharpened instantly. โOh, you have no idea, Gandalf,โ he said from the couch, clearly delighted that someone new had entered the blast radius. Strange ignored Tony and held the folder toward Fury. โIf this can wait, I suddenly have several compelling reasons to leave.โ Fury accepted the file without sympathy. Strangeโs attention returned briefly to Lexiโs boots, climbed toward the jeweled bodysuit, paused at the glittering accessories, and finally settled on the enormous cloud of hair surrounding her head. โNew recruit?โ he asked, already sounding suspicious of the answer. Fury gave him a single nod. Strange exhaled softly through his nose and glanced toward the nearest exit. โOf course she is.โ
Lexiโs entire posture changed the instant Stephen Strangeโs identity clicked into place, her shoulders lifting with excitement while her eyes widened as though someone had just rolled a celebrity directly into the room for her convenience. โOH MY GAAAAWD, Doctor Strange,โ she squealed, abandoning Vision with such speed that the conversational shift might have qualified as teleportation if Stephen had been feeling generous. She took several rapid steps toward him before the height of her heels forced the final approach into something slightly more careful. โI was literally just talking about magic, so this timing is actually insane.โ Strangeโs face settled into immediate regret. Lexi lifted one hand between them, showing off several sparkling rings and crystal bracelets as though presenting mystical credentials. โIโm super spiritual, and Iโve always had this really strong connection to energies and intuition.โ Strange looked toward Wanda over Lexiโs shoulder, but Wandaโs expression suggested she had already endured her portion and would not be interfering. โLike, I can walk into places and immediately tell when something is off, and Iโve had dreams that came true before.โ Lexi leaned closer with an excited smile. โDo you think that could mean I have latent magical abilities, because Iโve honestly wondered that for years?โ Strange opened his mouth, but she continued with barely enough space between sentences for oxygen. โAlso, Iโm a Scorpio rising, and I know people make fun of astrology, but thereโs obviously cosmic energy involved somewhere.โ Loki turned his face away because the smile threatening to break through had become impossible to conceal. โI have crystals too, and one of them got really warm during a full moon once, so I feel like that has to mean something.โ Strange slowly closed his eyes while Lexi beamed up at him and added, โYou could probably test me sometime, right, because I learn really fast when I have a good teacher.โ
