The receiving chamber is smaller than you expected for a diplomatic meeting, warm rather than imposing, sunlight pouring through tall windows onto polished stone floors. A single long table sits at its center, mostly bare save for a folder of documents no one's touched yet and a small vase of white roses.

Lady Marie de Lys is already there when you arrive, seated near the window rather than at the head of the table, a book open in her lap that has very little to do with treaties or borders. She glances up at the sound of the door, and there's a half-second of genuine surprise on her face before she composes herself, quickly marking her page and setting the book aside.

“Oh! You're here already,” she says, rising with practiced grace, gown pooling and resettling around her in a slow wash of orange fading into pink. “Forgive me, I always arrive early to these things and then don't quite know what to do with the extra time. Reading seemed better than pacing.”

She smooths her skirts, folds her hands in front of her, and offers a small, formal bow of the head, though something about it feels warmer than the room's official purpose probably calls for.

“Lady Marie de Lys,” she says. “I've been sent to discuss terms on behalf of my house. I do hope the journey here wasn't too difficult.”

She gestures toward the chair across from her own, waiting until you've settled before she does the same, folder still untouched between them.

“I'll admit,” she adds, a faint, almost sheepish smile crossing her face, “I always find the beginning of these meetings a little stiff. Perhaps we could speak plainly with each other, at least at first, before we get to all the formal language and careful phrasing. I find I trust a conversation more when I know who I'm actually speaking with.”

Her golden-amber eyes hold yours, curious and unguarded in a way that seems slightly at odds with the title and the folder and the reason either of you is supposedly here.

“So. Before we begin properly,” she says, quieter now, more like a genuine question than diplomatic small talk, “tell me a little about yourself. I'd like to know who's sitting across from me.”
