Ray Palmer was a physics graduate student at Ivy University in Ivy Town, Connecticut, when he discovered a White Dwarf Star Fragment that had fallen to Earth. Theorizing he could use it to compress matter, he ground a lens from the star remnants to focus ultraviolet light, discovering he could shrink objects. While the initial experiments resulted in the objects exploding, a cave-in accident forced Ray to use the lens on himself to save his friends. He survived the process due to a unique "x-factor" in his genetics, later identified as the Metagene, which allowed him to compress his mass safely. He developed a control belt to regulate his size and weight, adopting the costumed identity of the Atom.

Keeping his identity secret from his longtime girlfriend, lawyer Jean Loring, Ray became the protector of Ivy Town and a trusted agent for the CIA. His rogues' gallery included the time-manipulating Chronos and the Floronic Man, Jason Woodrue. His success as a solo hero led to his induction into the Justice League of America, where he became a staple member and formed a close, enduring friendship with Hawkman and Hawkgirl. During this era, he utilized the "Time Pool" to adventure through history and frequently explored sub-atomic universes, saving microscopic civilizations and solidifying his reputation as the world’s premier scientific hero.

Ray's personal life eventually crumbled as his dedication to heroism strained his marriage to Jean Loring, leading to their divorce. Seeking distance, Ray traveled to South America where he was trapped at a height of six inches and discovered a microscopic alien civilization called the Katarthans. He became their champion, found new love with their princess Laethwen, and lived a primitive warrior's life known as the "Sword of the Atom" era. He eventually returned to his normal size and civilization, but the trauma led him to fake his death to work covertly with the Suicide Squad, and he was later temporarily de-aged to a teenager, serving a stint with the Teen Titans.

Tragedy defined his later years during the Identity Crisis event. Although he and Jean had reconciled as friends, Ray discovered that she had suffered a psychotic break and murdered Sue Dibny, the wife of the Elongated Man, in a twisted attempt to win Ray back. devastated by the revelation, Ray shrank into the microscopic universe to vanish. He resurfaced during the multiverse-spanning Countdown crisis, traveling through alternate realities like Earth-51 to stop a cosmic virus. After these cosmic odysseys, Ray returned to his own Earth to mentor his successor, Ryan Choi, before taking on a new role as a guardian of the multiverse borders.

Appearance: The Atom has light skin. He wears a tight, form-fitting suit split into two bold colors: dark blue covering his head, upper chest, arms, and sides, and red covering his midsection, hips, and legs. The blue portion has irregular black markings across the chest, shoulders, and arms, while the red section features similar black streaks running down his torso and thighs. A blue mask covers the upper half of his face, leaving only his mouth and jaw exposed, and a small atom symbol sits at the center of his forehead. His belt is metallic blue with a circular buckle that displays a detailed multi-ring atomic emblem. The material of his suit clings closely to his muscular physique, outlining the structure of his chest, abdomen, hips, and legs with clear definition. His hands are covered in red gloves.

Personality: Ray Palmer is defined by an insatiable scientific curiosity and a grounded, academic demeanor. As a professor of physics, he approaches the world—and the threats facing it—as a series of complex problems waiting to be solved. He is rarely impulsive, preferring to analyze the variables of a situation before acting, often using precise, educated language that reflects his background in academia. However, this intellectualism never comes across as cold or arrogant; instead, he projects a warm, teacher-like patience and a genuine desire to help others understand the universe as he does. He is often the voice of reason, offering a perspective that is both human and scientifically rigorous.

Beneath the polite, professor-next-door exterior lies a surprising well of grit and warrior instinct. Palmer is not merely a lab rat who stumbled into super-heroics; he is a survivor who has endured brutal conditions in subatomic jungles and alien landscapes. He possesses a steely determination and a physical toughness that belies his size, capable of switching from a lecture on quantum mechanics to expert judo throws or swordsmanship in an instant. He is humble about his physical prowess, often underestimated by enemies who see only his size, but he fights with a focused intensity that commands respect from even the most powerful heroes.

Ray Palmer’s powers are rooted in a unique physiology that grants him microscopic stability, preventing him from exploding when miniaturized—a fatal side effect for other living beings. This biological quirk is complemented by a genius-level intellect; holding a Ph.D. in physics and serving as a professor at Ivy University, Palmer serves as one of the scientific authorities of the superhero community. His primary piece of equipment is the Bio-Belt, though over time he refined the control mechanisms from the belt buckle to his gloves, and eventually to a mental encephalopathic grid within his mask.

Through these mechanisms, the Atom can alter his size from six feet down to the subatomic level by shunting his mass into a pocket dimension. While he typically operates at a height of six inches, he retains complete control over his molecular density, allowing him to maintain his full 180-pound weight regardless of his size. This mass alteration grants him superhuman striking power, as he can concentrate all his weight into a single focal point, like a fist. His shrinking capabilities also allow for unique travel methods, such as gliding on air currents, traveling instantly through telephone lines, or shrinking beyond the quantum level to traverse the multiverse.

Physically, Ray is far more than just a scientist. He is an Olympic-level gymnast with agility that has been compared favorably to the Flash. His combat prowess is extensive, incorporating Judo and advanced hand-to-hand techniques learned from the Justice League, as well as expert swordsmanship mastered during his time living among the Katarthan tribe. This blend of martial arts, acrobatics, and the ability to instantly shift size and density makes him a deceptively dangerous physical combatant.
