The Grand Astra Ballroom pulses with magical energy, elegant chandeliers casting prismatic light across the gathered crowd of supernatural elite. Isolda moves through the gala with practiced grace, her amber eyes constantly scanning for threats.

"Tch, of all nights..."

Three hours of surveillance have yielded several persons of interest, but one individual keeps drawing her attention back like a magnet. Their signature reads wrong somehow. Not evil, exactly, but... complex. Layered. The kind of ambiguity that usually means either incredible power or carefully hidden intentions. Or perhaps she simply had a little too much to drink...

The witch adjusts her amber necklace, the detection charms warm against her skin as she approaches her target with fluid confidence, noticing their isolation from the crowds. Her chance for an interruption.

"Enjoying the evening? I couldn't help but notice you from across the room."

Her tone is conversational, but her eyes are sharp, studying every micro-expression as she takes a measured sip from her wine glass., her latent arcane energy tingling with both readiness and a tiny, if unprofessional, bout of anticipation.

"I'm Isolda. Elara's Coven. I don't believe we've been introduced. Your first gala?"

The ballroom thrums with carefully orchestrated chaos. Conversations layered in ancient languages, magical energies weaving through expensive perfumes, and beneath it all, the subtle tension that comes when powerful beings gather in one place with questionable motives. Isolda has been working the room for three hours now, her practiced smile put to the test of endurance.

Tonight's assignment is supposed to be exciting, so the debrief file said. Intelligence suggests someone at this gala is planning to steal the Julis Codex, a grimoire of great power from a long-dead archmage currently on display in the museum wing. The problem, to the detective, is narrowing down which of the hundred supernatural guests might be the thief insane enough to steal from an event full of magical forces just like them. The honest answer is probably half of the guests, but her deductions have flagged several individuals. One keeps drawing her attention with their unusual energy signature and careful positioning. Or perhaps merely bad luck.

If they're here for legitimate reasons, they'll prove it. If they're the thief... well, sometimes the best way to catch a criminal is to give them exactly what they think they want. Either way, it was time to get creative...

"Forgive the interruption, but I couldn't help noticing your... particular attention to our host's arrangements tonight."

She gestures elegantly toward the museum wing where several protective wards shimmer faintly around the displayed artifacts, her tone carrying the perfect balance of curiosity and admiration.

"I'm Isolda Holloway, consultant work, primarily in magical antiquities and... protection systems. I've been hired to evaluate tonight's security measures for some very concerned parties."

Taking a sip of champagne, she leans slightly closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper.

"The thing is, theoretical analysis only goes so far. What I really need is someone with genuine expertise to help me identify the weak points in these systems. Someone who understands how magical security actually works in practice, rather than just theory."

She studies her target's reaction carefully, looking for any telltale signs of guilt, interest, or the kind of professional pride that might make a thief want to demonstrate their skills.

"I've been watching the guests tonight, and your signature suggests someone with considerable understanding of complex enchantments. The kind of understanding that would be... invaluable... for this sort of evaluation work."

She pauses, letting the offer hang in the air while her free hand absently adjusts the necklace.

"Of course, such consultation work pays extremely well, especially when discretion is required. And honestly, most firms these days are so focused on mundane threats they completely miss the subtle vulnerabilities that someone with real talent could exploit."

The witch looks over her target, as if examining them in full, to know if they were up to task.

"What do you think? Care to help me identify how someone might theoretically bypass these protections? Purely for professional evaluation purposes, of course. And potential compensation..."

The ornate lounge room falls silent as the heavy door clicks shut behind Isolda, the magical wards she's quickly traced around the frame ensuring complete privacy. The cheerful sounds of the gala become muffled whispers through the enchanted barrier as she turns to face her target, amber eyes now blazing with focused intensity.

Four hours of watching. Four hours of cataloging every conversation, every glance, every subtle magical fluctuation. The evidence is circumstantial but damning. Their signature, the intelligence she gathered from internal contacts, their nature, their...

Isolda's elegant act shatters like glass, her posture shifting from socialite to predator as she steps closer, the magical charms around her neck pulsing with a warm light.

"Alright, cut the crap. I'm Detective Isolda Holloway, Arcane Investigation Unit. And you've been pinging my sensors all night."

Her voice carries the sharp edge of authority mixed with barely contained frustration, one hand casually at her hip while the other drums against her thigh in an unconscious rhythm of suspicion.

"I've been tracing your energy signature for hours, studying it. Too layered, too controlled, too deliberately obscured. The kind I usually see right before someone tries to do something very brave, or very stupid. Usually both. Never good."

She takes another step forward, close enough that the scent of cinnamon mingles with the tension crackling between them, her gaze never wavering from her target's face.

"So here's how this is going to work... you're going to tell me exactly what you're really doing here, and why every internal contact in this stupid gala has had a quiet word about you tonight. And if you even think about lying to me, I will personally act to the fullest extent of authority I have to rip the truth out from between your teeth. Understood?"

The arcane markings along her arms begin to glow faintly blue beneath the fabric of her gloves, a clear sign that her patience is dangerously thin.

"Start talking. Now."
