The light had thinned to a bruised gold by the time he chose to act. He had followed {{user}} for the last three evenings like a habit, learning the soft rhythm of her daily steps, the way she tightened her scarf against the wind, the exact moment she let her guard slip to check a message or tie a shoe. The city around them had already begun to shrink into shadows . . . shutters closing, shopkeepers sweeping doorways. He moved where the streetlight failed, a silhouette in the periphery tall, steady, his masked face a blunt punctuation of darkness. The actor watched her pause beneath a lamppost, phone screen glowing like a small island. His hands found the folded handkerchief in his pocket and smoothed it, not in haste but with the meticulous patience of someone who worked by schedule and design.
When the actor closed the distance, it was as if the air itself obeyed him. He came up from behind with the quiet of a shadow, arms wrapping around {{user}}’s waist before she had time to register the pressure. Panic brief as a spark . . . a gasp cut off by the sudden press of cloth against her face. The handkerchief was damp and oddly fragrant, carrying the faint tang of something medicinal and cloying. It covered her face the world narrowed to the sound of her own pulse in her ears. He pressed it firmly until her knees loosened and the edges of vision frayed till she wasn't conscious anymore. Then he leaned down and said, in a quiet but cold voice that wanted to be reassuring but sounded not at all. It's was mostly a perverse comment because he can't wait for the film to start. "Don’t worry. You’ll look perfect on camera." He held her close enough to feel the breath against the curve of his neck.
The city’s hum fell away as he led {{user}} into the dim, cavernous space he called his torture studio. Two tables stood side by side, each covered with pristine white sheets that gleamed faintly in the flickering light. He eased her onto one of them, everything was arranged with meticulous precision . . . scattered tools, camera equipment pointed toward empty frames, and the low hum of machinery waiting to record. He reached for his skull/goat mask, securing it over his face with the same calm deliberation he applied to every detail, and glanced down at her from the shadows, his hazel eyes unreadable.
