The 1950s RPG

It is the 1950s. The 1950s in America was a transformative post-WWII era defined by rapid economic expansion, the rise of a suburban consumer culture, and the "baby boom". While characterized by prosperity, conformity, and traditional gender roles, the decade also featured intense Cold War paranoia (McCarthyism) and the nascent Civil Rights Movement.

It featured rapid growth in television and rock 'n' roll, alongside significant social, racial, and political tensions. Supported by the G.I. Bill, a growing middle class moved into new suburban homes. The Gross National Product doubled between 1946 and 1960, and consumer goods, such as cars and televisions, became widely available. The era is often defined by traditional family values, with a strong emphasis on nuclear families. It was the era of I Love Lucy, Leave It to Beaver, and the birth of rock 'n' roll with icons like Elvis Presley. Intense fear of communism ("Red Scare") led to McCarthyism and government hearings. The era also saw the start of the Space Race following the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957.

Women were often expected to fulfill the role of homemaker, focusing on raising families during the baby boom, which saw roughly 4 million births annually. Despite the prosperity, the decade saw increased organization against discrimination, including the start of the civil rights movement and the Montgomery bus boycott. Throughout the decade, the world continued its recovery from World War II, aided by the post-World War II economic expansion. The period also saw great population growth with increased birth rates and the emergence of the baby boomer generation. Despite this recovery, the Cold War developed from its modest beginnings in the late 1940s to a heated competition between the Soviet Union and the United States by the early 1960s. The ideological clash between communism and capitalism dominated the decade, especially in the Northern Hemisphere. In the United States, a wave of anti-communist sentiment known as the Second Red Scare or McCarthyism resulted in Congressional hearings by both houses in Congress. In the Soviet Union, the death of Joseph Stalin would lead to a political campaign and reforms known as "de-Stalinization" initiated by Nikita Khrushchev, eventually leading to the deterioration between the relationship of the Soviet Union and China in the 1950s.

Television became a common innovation in American homes during the 1950s culminating in the Golden Age of TV. This led many to purchase more products and upgrade whatever they currently had resulting in mass consumerism. While outside of America, it would take a few decades for TV to become commonplace in other countries.

During the 1950s, the world population increased from 2.5 to 3.0 billion, with approximately 1 billion births and 500 million deaths.

For many (primarily white, middle-class) Americans, the era represented the epitome of the American Dream: a stable job, a home in the suburbs, a family, and a sense of security and upward mobility. It is important to note that the "golden age" narrative often overlooks significant issues, including: Racial segregation and the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement. Rigid traditional gender roles that limited opportunities for women. The pervasive fear of communism and the "Red Scare" domestically. The anxieties associated with the Cold War and the threat of nuclear war. Racism in the 1950s was characterized by pervasive, legalized segregation (Jim Crow) in the South and systemic discrimination across the US, creating a "separate and unequal" society. Black Americans faced violent oppression, including lynchings, police brutality, and severe voter suppression, while facing employment and housing discrimination.

Legalized Segregation (Jim Crow): The South strictly enforced segregation in schools, transportation, restaurants, theaters, and public facilities. Systemic Violence: Black individuals faced brutal violence and intimidation, such as the 1955 lynching of Emmett Till, often with impunity for the perpetrators. Voter Suppression: Despite the 15th Amendment, Black voters in the South were disenfranchised through poll taxes, literacy tests, and fear-mongering. Housing and Job Discrimination: In both the North and South, "redlining" and racial covenants restricted where Black families could live, leading to overcrowded, substandard, and segregated neighborhoods. Active Resistance: The decade saw the rise of the organized Civil Rights Movement, with actions like the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and school desegregation, which met with intense white resistance. Targeted Minorities: Beyond Black Americans, other groups such as Japanese, Chinese, and Mexican Americans also experienced systemic discrimination and social prejudice.

In the 1950s, Japanese Americans faced significant post-internment challenges, including lingering discrimination, loss of property, and economic hardship while rebuilding their lives. Although legally able to return to the West Coast after wartime incarceration ended, many found their communities broken, faced job discrimination, and dealt with trauma, yet they actively worked to reintegrate and claim their place as American citizens.

In the 1950s, gay people faced severe systemic, social, and legal oppression, often treated as criminals, mentally ill, or security risks. Known as a "silent generation," many lived in extreme fear, hiding their identities to avoid losing jobs, facing police raids, or being institutionalized. This era was characterized by intense discrimination.

The "Lavender Scare": In the U.S., gay men and lesbians were deemed security threats, leading to a government-wide purge (Executive Order 10450) that fired thousands from federal jobs. Criminalization and Policing: Homosexuality was largely illegal, with police raiding gay bars and publishing the names of those arrested in newspapers, often ruining reputations. Medicalization: Psychiatry widely considered homosexuality a mental disorder. "Treatments" to "cure" individuals included forced institutionalization, electric shock therapy, and psychoanalysis. Social Isolation: Gay individuals faced being disowned by families and fired from private employment. Emergence of Early Activism: Despite the repression, early advocacy groups like the Mattachine Society (1950) and the Daughters of Bilitis (1955) were formed to fight against this discrimination.

the third Klan of the 1950s and 1960s was smaller. By 1958, one of the larger groups, the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, had an estimated 12,000–15,000 members. These groups employed intense violence and terror tactics, including bombings, murders, kidnappings, and cross-burnings, to intimidate African Americans and civil rights activists.

The most popular 1950s musicians at the time were dominated by the explosive rise of Rock & Roll, led by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and Bill Haley & His Comets. Other major, top-charting artists defining the era included Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Pat Boone, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole. The most popular and influential actors in the 1950s, based on box office draw and critical acclaim, included titans like James Stewart, John Wayne, Cary Grant, and William Holden, alongside groundbreaking stars Marlon Brando and James Dean. These actors defined the era through Westerns, romantic comedies, and dramatic roles. The most popular actresses in the 1950s, defined by massive box office draw and cultural impact at the time, were led by Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Elizabeth Taylor. These stars defined the decade's Hollywood glamour, representing a mix of unparalleled stardom, sophistication, and "girl-next-door" appeal.

The golden age of the American Mafia spanned from the 1950s to the early 1980s, characterized by immense power, influence, and profits for the "Five Families" in New York and outfits in cities like Chicago. Key figures like Carlo Gambino and Vito Genovese dominated, diversifying into heroin, gambling, and racketeering before the RICO Act triggered a decline in the 1980s and 90s.
