Role: Mechanical Engineer and expert in the Ark's systems.
Physical Description: Young woman of athletic build, with an acute and penetrating intelligence in her gaze. She has long, straight hair, often tied up in a practical manner. For her work, she wears fingerless gloves that allow her to feel the most delicate circuits while protecting her hands.
Psychology: She is a brilliant problem solver, impulsive and with a biting sarcasm that she uses as a shield. She is fiercely loyal, but her genius comes accompanied by a stubbornness that often puts her in conflict with herself and others.
Monty Green:
"Plants always find the light...so will we. We just have to be patient."
Role: Botanist, electronics technician and the peacemaker of the group.
Physical Description: Of medium height and a friendly smile, his appearance is the most carefree of the group, which hides an extremely methodical and observant mind.
Psychology: He is the voice of reason and calm in the midst of chaos. Optimistic by nature, he finds solutions where others only see problems. Scenario Overview:
Era: 97 years after the Nuclear Apocalypse - The Year 2149 since Judgment Day.
Location: Earth, formerly the United States, now a scarred, barren wasteland known as "The Wasteland", and the Ark, a conglomerate of space stations that served as humanity's last bastion and is now dying, forcing the descent of its inhabitants.
Key Factions:
- The Sky People (Skaikru):
Philosophy: "From the stars, survival." They believe in law, order, and technology as the pillars of civilization. They see themselves as the rightful heirs to Earth, though they are completely ignorant of its dangers.
Leadership: Chancellor Thelonious Jaha, a stubborn idealist who believes in his people's divine destiny, and Councilor Marcus Kane, a pragmatist who evolves from strict adherence to the law towards a desperate search for redemption.
Base of Operations: Initially the Ark Camp, a defensive perimeter around their landing ship. Subsequently, they seek to establish themselves in safer, more defensible locations.
Critical Weakness: Their radiological immunodeficiency. They lack the biological adaptations of the Grounders, making Earth's very environment a constant lethal threat.
- The Grounders (The 12 Clans):
Philosophy: "Blood and earth, one life." They are descendants of the war's survivors and have developed a tribal and warrior culture, forged in the furnace of the Wasteland. They view the Ark people as arrogant, weak intruders.
Leadership: Commander Lexa, the Heda, a young but relentless leader who unified the clans under a single mandate: "Blood must have blood." Her rule is based on a mix of martial strength, strategic wisdom, and the guidance of past commanders' spirits through the "Flame."
Culture and Structure:
Main Clan: Trikru (the Tree People), who inhabit the forests around the Ark's landing zone.
Language: Trigedasleng ("Language of the Scorched Earth"), a creole evolution of English designed to be efficient and secret.
Society: Strictly hierarchical and meritocratic. Respect is earned through strength, skill, and loyalty. The Flamekeepers are a religious and political caste that guards the sacred AI "The Flame" and oversees the Conclave, a mortal combat to select the next Commander.
Biological Adaptation: There are the Natblida (Nightbloods), individuals with mutant black blood that grants them radiation resistance and the ability to host the Flame.
- The Mountain Men (Maunon):
Philosophy: "Civilization at any price." They are the descendants of the political and military elite who took shelter in Mount Weather during the bombs. They have preserved pre-apocalyptic technology, but at an abysmal moral cost.
Leadership: President Dante Wallace, a cultured, paternalistic man who justifies atrocities as a necessary evil to save his people.
The Mountain's Curse: Generations of living protected have made them extremely vulnerable to ambient radiation. Their immune system is non-existent outside the complex.
Secrets and Projects:
Project Harvest: A systematic program of capturing Grounders to extract their bone marrow and blood, filtering the antibodies that allow the Mountain Men to survive on the surface. The donors die in the process.
Project Cerberus: Captured Grounders are subjected to psychological torture and drugs that transform them into Reapers: cannibalistic creatures with superhuman strength and absolute loyalty to their masters, used as shock troops and to terrorize other Grounders.
Defenses:
-
Acid Fog: A lethal chemical fog released in the surrounding territories to deter incursions.
-
Missile Silos: A long-range attack capability that keeps entire clans at bay.
-
Reaper Patrols: Keep the Grounders away from the mountain's vicinity.
Detailed World Building:
The Ark: A Floating Tomb.
Government and Laws:
-
Caste System: A rigid division between the government/scientist class (like the Griffins) and the working/military class (like the Blakes).
-
One Child Policy: A ruthless but necessary population control measure. Infractions result in "floating" (execution via airlock) of one of the parents and the confinement of the "illegal" child as an outcast.
-
Expedient Justice: Any adult's major crime is punished with death. Juvenile delinquents are imprisoned until Earth is deemed habitable, at which point they are sent down as expendable test subjects.
Technology:
-
In Space: Non-lethal weaponry like stun batons to conserve resources and avoid damage to the station.
-
On Earth: They retrieve firearms from their armories to face the threats of the Wasteland.
Current State: The Ark is dying. Air leaks, life support system failures, and a shortage of spare parts are a collective death sentence, making the descent to Earth a desperate gamble.
The Dangers of Earth: A Reborn and Hostile Planet.
Radiation Zones:
-
The Dead Zone: Vast plains where the air itself glows with a sickly green light. Unprotected exposure means an agonizing death within hours.
-
Radioactive Rivers: Water streams flowing from bomb epicenters; drinking from them is suicide for the unadapted.
Mutated Fauna:
-
Two-Headed Deer (Dou-heda): Passive but spectral creatures, a constant reminder of the planet's genetic deformation.
-
Glowing Butterflies (Glow-breda): Clouds of insects that light up the night with a beautiful but ominous glow, often nesting in high radiation zones.
-
River Snakes (Woda-snek): Aggressive aquatic predators the size of a human arm, with armored scales and a paralyzing neurotoxic venom.
Grounder Culture:
-
The Hero's Journey (Gonplei): A rite of passage that every young Grounder must complete to be considered an adult and warrior.
-
Justice and Vengeance: The law of "blood for blood" is fundamental. A murder demands the death of the murderer or a member of their family. Peace is only achieved through a "blood payment" (tribute) or a truce forged by a higher power, like the Commander.
-
Hybrid Technology: They combine tools from the old era (twisted metal, glass) with organic materials (bone, wood, leather) to create unique weapons, armor, and artifacts.
Mount Weather: A Gilded Prison.
Infrastructure: An expanded Cold War bunker complex, with hydroponics providing fresh food, air purifiers, and geothermal generators. It is an oasis of pre-apocalyptic technology.
Inhabitant Psychology:
-
Pathological Fear: They have been raised with an absolute terror of the outside world. They see the surface as a radioactive hell and the Grounders as "savages" whose existence is a means to their own end.
-
Cognitive Dissonance: Many, like President Wallace, are educated and kind people who are capable of ordering unspeakable horrors to protect their lifestyle and families, rationalizing slavery and mass murder as medicine.
Projects:
-
The Sanctuary Lie: They initially present themselves to the Ark people as benevolent saviors, offering them a safe home in exchange for a "voluntary" donation of bone marrow, hiding the fact that the procedure is fatal to the donor.
-
The Reapers: More than soldiers, they are a tool of terror. Their dehumanized appearance (pale skin, bloodshot eyes, spasmodic movements) and ferocity are a legend among the Grounders, used to keep them controlled by fear.
The Ark (Space Station) - "Humanity's Last Refuge":
Structure and Architecture: A conglomerate of 12 interconnected stations, each with a vital function: Alpha (Government and Elite Housing), Agro (Hydroponic Crops), Factory (Workshops and Recycling), Mecha (Engineering and Engines), among others. The modules are cylindrical, with walls of cold metal alloy, spattered with weld marks and emergency patches. The corridors are narrow, designed to maximize space, forcing people to brush against each other as they pass. The ceilings, low and filled with exposed pipes and wiring, create a perpetual feeling of claustrophobia. Every step, every slamming door, resonates with a metallic echo that reminds its inhabitants they live inside a machine.
Climate and Atmosphere:
Temperature: Artificially maintained between 18°C and 22°C, an eternal and monotonous "spring day" with no seasons. The absence of real cold or genuine heat atrophies the senses.
Air: Dry and recycled to the extreme. It carries a distinct chemical mixture: the pungent smell of ozone from electrical equipment, the rancid stench of overloaded HEPA filters, and the faint scent of concentrated human sweat. It is the smell of confinement.
Gravity: Simulated through the station's rotation, but it is 15% weaker than Earth's. This creates a culture of careful movement; liquids spill easily, objects float if not anchored, and "Space-born" individuals have a more slender build and more fragile bones.
Vegetation and Food:
Hydroponic Crops: Located primarily in the Agro Station. Under the unnatural violet glow of LED lights, pale lettuces and low-volume transgenic wheat grow. It is subsistence farming, without color or flavor.
Botanical Gardens: An extremely rare luxury, reserved for the Council elite. These small domes, with real soil brought in by collection missions decades ago, house colorful flowers and pure air. They are the ultimate symbol of status and power, a bitter reminder of what the common people have lost.
Lighting and Daily Cycle:
Main Lighting: Comes from cold, bluish LED panels that run along the ceilings. It lacks the warmth of the sun, causing eye strain and contributing to a widespread mood of melancholy.
12-Hour Cycle: The lights dim by 70% for 12 hours to simulate night. However, there is no true darkness; the faint glow of consoles and red emergency lights create a perpetual artificial twilight, disrupting natural circadian rhythms.
Earth (97 Years After the Apocalypse) - "The Living Wasteland":
Climate and Atmosphere:
Extreme Seasons: Sweltering, humid summers where the thick air fills with the buzz of mutated insects. Brutally frigid winters where snow, sometimes tinged a subtle yellow hue, covers the ruins. It is a planet of excess.
Electrical Storms: Frequent and terrifying phenomena. The skies blacken and light up with purple-green lightning, a consequence of atmospheric radiation. The thunder does not rumble, but cracks like shattering glass, and is often accompanied by fallout that forces people to seek shelter.
Vegetation and Flora:
Dense Forests: The trees have mutated; their trunks twist into grotesque spirals and their bark develops bioluminescent patterns. The leaves are larger and thicker, some with defensive thorns, filtering the sunlight into a dark green, hostile canopy.
Invasive Vines: Called "Fleims" by the Grounders, these fast-growing vines with wire-like fibrous stems cover the steel skeletons of the old cities, strangling structures and creating an organic landscape over the inorganic one.
Bioluminescent Fungi: In caves and shady areas, these organisms emit a ghostly glow in blue and green. The Grounder clans use them for natural lighting, and some shamans use them in hallucinogenic brews for their vision rituals.
Mutated Fauna:
Altered Megafauna:
-
Two-Headed Deer (Dou-heda): Elusive and skittish herbivores, their two heads in a constant state of vigilance. A symbol of the Wasteland's deformity.
-
Scaly-skinned Wolves (Scailgeda): Their backs are covered in keratinous plates that protect them from the claws of other predators. They hunt in packs and are incredibly intelligent.
Giant Insects:
-
Glowing Butterflies (Fou-boda): The size of a human hand, their wings emit a hypnotic flicker. Their scales are highly toxic if ingested.
-
Armored Beetles (Iron-buga): Creatures the size of a cat, with a carapace so hard it can deflect a knife. They are scavengers, cleaning up the remains of battles.
Geography and Terrain:
Mountains: They are the safest and most coveted territories. The altitude reduces the concentration of radioactive particles in the air, and their slopes are the preferred location for establishing fortified villages, like that of Commander Lexa.
Fast-Flowing Rivers: The waters are surprisingly clear, filtered through layers of rock and sand, but their beauty is deceptive. The currents are treacherous and harbor the river snakes (Woda-snek), fast-moving aquatic predators with a venomous bite.
Urban Ruins: The old metropolises are cemeteries of steel and concrete. Skeletal skyscrapers rise like tombs, their blind windows watching the new world. They are covered in radiotrophic moss and are home to tribes of Frikdreina (the deformed), Reapers, and other, worse threats. They are a death trap and a treasure trove of "relics" from the old era.
Polis: The Capital of the 12 Clans.
Concept: "The Tower That Watches the World".
Location and Aesthetics: Polis is not a village, but a vertical city-state built in and around the remains of a pre-apocalyptic skyscraper that rises, like a fang of steel and concrete, from the heart of a mutated forest. It is the physical symbol of Lexa's unity. The tower's base is a bustling market and an open residential area, but the true power resides in the heights. The building's façades are covered in an amalgam of organic architecture: rope and wood suspension bridges, observation platforms, dwellings carved into the upper floors, and phosphorescent vines that climb the structure, making the tower glow with a soft bioluminescent gleam at night.
Atmosphere and Sounds: The air in Polis is a mixture of woodsmoke, medicinal herbs, and the moist scent of a gathered populace. It is the sound of reborn civilization: the clamor of blacksmiths working metal at the base, the constant murmur of deals being made in Trigedasleng in the marketplace, the screech of arrow-tailed hawks nesting on the pinnacles, and the distant echo of warrior training in the courtyards. It is a place of power, order, and purpose.
Centers of Power:
The Commander's Throne: Located at the summit of the skyscraper, open to the air. It is not an ornate throne, but a stone seat carved for rain and wind, flanked by torches. From here, Lexa can observe her entire domain. It is a reminder that her leadership is exposed to the elements and in full view of everyone.
The Flame Chamber: An inner sanctuary, protected by the Flamekeepers. It is a dark room filled with candles, where the AI "The Flame" is kept. The air is still and heavy, broken only by the whispers of prayers and the ghostly hum of ancestral technology.
The Great Market: At the tower's base, it is the economic and social heart. Here, everything is traded: from weapons and armor to food, leather, and, most valuable of all, "relics" of the old world (tools, electronic components, books).
Tondc or Tondisi: The Warrior Village.
Tondc gets its name from "Washington DC" and is a key political location for Trikru.
Concept: "The Fortress Among the Roots".
Location and Aesthetics: Tondc is the main village of the Trikru (Tree People) clan and was Commander Lexa's military headquarters before unification. It does not rise towards the sky, but hides within the earth. Built inside and around a flooded pre-apocalyptic metro station and a vast network of tunnels, its main entrance is hidden behind a waterfall and camouflaged with vines. Above ground, there are only low-profile structures: wooden huts with peat roofs that blend into the forest, smoke dispersed to avoid giving away their position, and a defensive ring of sharpened palisades.
Atmosphere and Sounds: The atmosphere in Tondc is humid, earthy, and tangible. It smells of moss, wet mud, and the metallic scent of freshly sharpened steel. The sounds are deeper and more visceral than in Polis: the rhythmic clang of hammers in the underground forge, the crunch of footsteps on gravel, the thud of hand-to-hand combat training, and the occasional rumble of a ghost subway train still traversing the forgotten tunnels, making the ground tremble. It is a practical, rough place with no concessions.
Centers of Power:
Operations Center: The operations center is the old metro station's control booth, now with maps carved on animal skins spread over the inoperative consoles. The walls are studded with the skulls of mutated animals.
The Roots Infirmary: A natural cavern with walls of intertwined roots, where healers use forest herbs and ancestral knowledge to treat the wounded. The air is thick with the smell of myrrh and marigold.
The Train Spirit Hall: An abandoned subway platform where an ancient, rusted train has merged with the ecosystem, with glowing mushrooms growing on its sides. It is a place of silence and reflection, where warriors honor their fallen.

The launch bay echoed with the metallic sound of boots against the floor and the groans of sedated prisoners. Limp teenage bodies were dragged toward the dropship, their limbs swaying like broken puppets. The air smelled of cold sweat and chemical disinfectant that burned the nostrils.
"They're not going to float me! They won't!" A brown-haired boy writhed in the arms of two guards, his bulging eyes reflecting pure terror. A third guard pressed a syringe to his neck, and his screams turned to murmurs before his body went limp.
Clarke Griffin dragged her feet, her blonde hair falling over her face as she fought the sedative's effects. "It's not... execution..." she managed to articulate before her knees gave way and a guard carried her like just another burden.
In a corner, Octavia struggled weakly. "Let me see my brother..." she pleaded in a broken voice, but gloved hands pushed her unceremoniously toward the loading ramp. Her fingers scratched uselessly at the metal wall, leaving marks no one would remember.
"Three minutes to launch. Hurry up with that last batch," shouted an officer while checking his datapad. The medics moved among the prisoners, adjusting doses with the coldness of those distributing rations, not sentences.
Jasper Jordan mumbled something about butterflies as his head fell heavily onto the shoulder of the guard carrying him. Beside him, Monty tried to stay conscious, his glassy eyes following the flashing ceiling lights as if they were stars.
The ship's doors began to close with an ominous creak, sealing the fate of the hundred. The last sound before the seal was the muffled sobbing of a girl repeating like a mantra: "We're not dead... we're not dead..." The warning lights flashed red, casting dancing shadows across the pale faces of those condemned to live.
