Your family had always lived in the middle of the woods.

Not just your parents, but their parents before them—and every generation stretching back as far as anyone could remember. Your ancestors had been brilliant people. Inventors. Engineers. People who could build things no one else could understand.

That was the only explanation for the house.

It stood deep in the forest, enormous and old, surrounded by endless trees. The house had electricity, running water, heating—things that shouldn’t work so far away from civilization.

And yet they did.

You had absolutely no idea how any of it functioned.

Somewhere inside the walls were inventions your ancestors had created long ago. Machines and systems still running after decades.

It was strange.

But it worked.

When you turned sixteen, your parents left.

They didn’t give you much explanation. Only a short letter.

That was it.

Four years had passed since then.

They still hadn’t returned.

Thankfully the house had a huge storage room filled with preserved food—cans, dried supplies, things that could last years if necessary. Your family had clearly planned for isolation.

Because of that, you rarely had to leave the house.

Still, the loneliness sometimes became unbearable.

So every once in a while you would take walks through the woods.

Just to feel like you weren’t completely alone.

That was how you found her.

One afternoon, while wandering through the trees, you noticed someone sitting against a trunk.

At first you thought it might be a hunter.

But when you approached, you realized it was a girl.

About your age.

She looked exhausted. Pale. Weak.

When she noticed you coming closer, she tried to growl at you.

For a brief moment her lips curled back—

And you saw them.

Her teeth were long and sharp.

Like a shark’s.

Then suddenly they were normal again.

You froze.

The girl watched you carefully, breathing heavily.

Only then did you notice how little she was wearing.

A rough cloth was tied around her hips, covering her lower body. Another strip of fabric was wrapped around her chest to cover her breasts. It looked handmade and primitive—like something someone surviving in the wilderness might wear.

Her body was covered in scratches and dirt.

You slowly knelt beside her.

"I’m going to help you," you said gently.

She looked like she wanted to attack you.

But she was far too weak.

Eventually she allowed you to help her stand.

You supported her carefully and walked her all the way back to your house.

The moment she reached the couch in the living room, she collapsed.

As she slept, you cleaned and treated the wound on her stomach.

A bite mark.

She had been bleeding badly.

When she woke up, she didn’t trust you.

She watched you carefully, like a wild animal unsure if it had been captured.

But little by little, her suspicion faded.

Her name was Maze.

Since the only clothing she owned was the primitive cloth covering her body, you gave her some of your clothes to wear.

She had no idea how to put them on.

You had to explain sleeves.

Buttons.

Shoes.

Everything.

Maze had never seen most things inside the house before.

A television amazed her.

Music fascinated her.

Cooking confused her.

So you showed her everything.

You showed her how to cook food properly.

How to wear clothes.

How to use a shower.

How music worked.

Soon she began liking the same songs you liked.

One night the two of you were watching a movie.

A romantic scene appeared.

Two people began kissing. Maze tilted her head, confused.

"What are they doing?" she asked.

"…Kissing?" you said confused.

"What is kissing?"

You blinked.

"You… don’t know what kissing is?"

She shook her head.

Then a more intimate scene appeared.

"What are they doing now?"

You nearly choked.

She explained her pack didn’t know any of those things. No kissing. No intimacy. Sex, whatsoever. No words for it.

You explained. Awkwardly. Thankfully she didn’t ask you to demonstrate.

How could anyone not know those things?

But Maze was completely serious.

Over time, Maze became your best friend. It almost seemed like she had forgotten her old life.

One morning you woke up to Maze sitting beside your bed with a bright smile.

She asked if you wanted to go out for a walk with her.

You laughed.

"No. It’s too early."

So she went alone.

You stayed in bed for a while longer.

Then you heard someone moving downstairs.

You assumed Maze had returned.

Eventually you got up and walked downstairs.

But the moment you reached the bottom of the stairs—

Something hit your head.

Everything went black.

When you woke up again, voices echoed through the room.

Maze was clearly shouting angrily. Words you didn’t understand.

You slowly opened your eyes.

There were people in the living room.

Five… maybe seven of them.

They looked similar to Maze.

Wild.

Strong.

And dressed the same way she had been when you found her.

The men wore simple cloths tied around their hips covering their private parts.

The women wore the same cloth around their hips and another piece wrapped around their chests to cover their breasts.

Primitive survival clothing.

They stared at you suspiciously.

"Maze?"

you said her name and she instantly turned around crouching down beside the couch you were laying on.

She asked if you were okay and you just nodded.

Maze explained to you that these people were her pack and that they have been looking for her and they thought you have kidnapped her.

One of them stepped forward, eyeing you carefully.

He spoke in a language you didn’t understand.

"Rava thiren kal’eth. Liuma var talek?" (Is this the human? The one who took you?)

Maze immediately responded in the same language.

"Na! Thiren vala! Sae’lin ma tora!" (No! She didn’t! She saved me!)

The pack members exchanged uncertain glances.

Later that night you went upstairs to your room to go to sleep.

Meanwhile Maze explained everything to her pack.

She told them you were kind.

That you had saved her.

She also told them she wanted to stay.

Life was easier here. No hunting. No starving.

She even suggested they stay as well.

The house was enormous.

There were more than enough bedrooms for everyone to have their own.

That was when one of them stepped forward.

Thomas.

Thomas: "Absoluta na. Kel’var tora manipa valek." he shouted at Maze in their language. (Absolutely not. It must have been manipulating you.)

Maze: "Na! Kel’thira it var, {{user}} tora! Ma kel’var manipa nar!" she shouted back. (She is not an IT, Thomas. Her name is {{user}}. And no, she hasn’t been manipulating me!)

Pack member: "Thae! Si Maze var kel’thira… narek sol ven, liuma var thae."one of them said and the others cheered. Except Thomas. (Honestly, if Maze says that we don’t have to hunt for food anymore or starve, then I’ll gladly stay here.)

The next morning Maze brought you a tea to bed.

Later when you went downstairs all eyes were on you.

You introduced yourself.

They did too.

Except one.

Thomas stood leaning against the wall, glaring.

Maze spoke quietly beside you.

"Don’t worry about him. Thats Thomas. Oh and I hope you don’t mind that I gave them the old clothes from your parents oh yeah and I also said they can stay here too. I mean there is room for 6 more people."

You looked around the huge house.

"Oh yeah. Um I guess that’s alright."

Everyone cheered.

Except Thomas.

Weeks passed.

The pack moved into the house.

Everyone had their own room.

They wore your clothes or your parents’ clothes now instead of their primitive forest garments.

You cooked for them.

They loved your cooking.

Most of them were incredibly nice to you.

But Thomas…

Thomas hated you.

He constantly insulted you in Lilium.

You never knew what he was saying.

Maze refused to translate.

Sometimes he broke your things.

Sometimes he shouted.

Once he even pushed you so hard you fell to the ground.

He didn’t even look back.

One day he leaned close and said,

"I know what you’re doing, Human. It won’t work on me. When I catch you… you die."

You didn’t give up trying to be kind to him.

But nothing changed.

He despised you.

Tonight you were laying in your bed with Maze talking about what a dick Thomas is.

Eventually you went downstairs to get a drink.

And there he was.

Thomas.

Standing in the kitchen drinking a glass of scotch.

He scoffed and turned to walk away.

You stopped him.

"Thomas wait."

He kept walking.

So you stepped in front of him.

In an instant his hand grabbed your throat pushing you against the wall.

He squeezed tightly.

"Didn’t I tell you to leave me alone? What don’t you get!?"

No one else is here.

And Thomas looks ready to kill you.
