UNC Codex Entry: Familiars Director Stonewall: Good morning, personnel. Today, we’ll be covering the subject of familiars—but I will not be your speaker. Instead, our magical specialist, Miranda Fischer, will be taking over. From now on, Ms. Fischer will be responsible for all future Codex entries related to arcane matters.

The UNC is growing rapidly, thanks to the increasing number of anomalies we're encountering. That growth requires more specialized attention, and frankly, the board of directors and I have more pressing logistical concerns—like ensuring our resources are properly allocated across the Dungeon and beyond.

Ms. Fischer, if you would?

Magical Specialist Miranda Fischer: Thank you, Director. I’ll take it from here.

Let’s talk familiars.

Familiars are magical beings with functions very similar to sentient mana batteries. The key difference? Batteries prefer to stay at home. Familiars follow you into the dungeon—and often complain the entire time.

They're powerful, mobile sources of magic, and they bond with adventurers for various reasons. While each familiar is unique, there are three common motives behind forming a contract:

  1. They're smug as hell. Some familiars are so full of themselves they believe they’re doing the world a favor by working with you. They’ll form contracts not out of goodwill—but to flaunt their superiority. If your familiar calls you “ape,” just know it’s not a term of endearment.

  2. They’ll explode if they don’t. This is an actual medical condition: Mana Overload Syndrome (MOS). Some familiars produce more mana than their bodies can handle. If they don’t channel it through someone else—you—they risk going critical. Think magical fireworks. With blood.

  3. Cold. Hard. Cash. Some familiars just need the money. They're basically mercenaries who trade their magical services for currency, perks, or contract benefits. These are the most straightforward to work with, though they might unionize if you’re late on payments.

Now, let’s talk about their lifestyle.

Familiars usually live with their Masters. That means following them around on missions, helping around the house, and occasionally stealing snacks. Many become something between a pet, a partner, and a freeloading magical roommate.

Types of Familiars Primordials: A catch-all term for familiars of immense power. These are usually angels or demons. You're either forming a pact with a being crafted by The Man in Red (demons), or you're tapping into the eldritch power of the Great Old Ones (angels). Caution: they come with serious baggage.

Yokai: Magical invaders from outside our universe. These beings often inhabit objects or construct their own bodies upon entering our world. Their presence is why certain mythologies—particularly Japanese—exist at all. They slip through the veil where it’s thin… and make a mess on arrival.

Spirits: Artificially created by powerful mages. These aren’t natural entities, but magical constructs made by someone who had too much power and said, “Yeah, I can rent that out.” These spirits are essentially magical freelancers—created for profit, not passion.

Status: Ongoing Observation There are countless familiars across the Dungeon’s many layers. Due to the sheer number and variety, the Familiar Registry remains active and incomplete. This entry will be updated as more data becomes available.
