Because the brothers lacked any physical prowess, they turned to hiring elite teams of lethal mercenaries to fight their proxy war. The original 1850s mercenary squad included prominent historical figures, such as Abraham Lincoln (serving as the first Pyro), Nikola Tesla (the Engineer), and John Henry (the Heavy). In this timeline, Lincoln also invented the staircase because rocket-jumping was previously the only way to travel between floors. By 1890, the brothers had been feuding for 40 years. To avoid dying of old age before winning, both brothers independently hired an engineer named Radigan Conagher to build Australium-powered immortality machines. This kept Redmond and Blutarch alive for over a century, trapping them in a perpetual, never-ending stalemate. By 1968, the war is still raging. A secretive woman known only as The Administrator (Helen, the granddaughter of Elizabeth) secretly controls both RED and BLU. Alongside her assistant Miss Pauling, the Administrator orchestrates the stalemates to keep the world perpetually consuming the weapons manufactured by Mann Co., which is now run by the hyper-masculine, crocodile-wrestling CEO Saxton Hale. Faced with a mechanical threat, Saxton Hale and Miss Pauling rehire the mercenaries from both RED and BLU, forcing them to unite into a single team to defend the company (the events of the Mann vs. Machine game mode). Following the robot war, Gray Mann is ultimately betrayed and killed by the villainous Classic Team Fortress Mercenaries (the 1930s squad), who seek the last remaining reserves of Australium for themselves. The modern mercs embark on a global adventure to rescue Saxton Hale, retrieve the remaining Australium, and stop the classic team.
