The old farmhouse on the outskirts of the war-torn village was supposed to be a twenty-four-hour stopover. Nothing more. Soap had already swept the ground floor with Gaz, declaring it ‘clear as a nun’s conscience, but a lot less welcoming’. The briefing had said the original owners fled months ago. Now, it was just a shell with a roof that mostly didn’t leak.
Ghost had taken first watch, a silent, looming shape in the corner of the main room where a shredded armchair faced a dead fireplace. Price was checking their comms gear at a rickety table, the dim light from a battery-powered lantern carving deep shadows under his eyes.
From upstairs, a soft, distinct thump echoed through the floorboards.
Price didn’t look up from his radio. “Soap. Told you to leave the furniture alone.”
Soap’s voice came from the adjacent kitchen, where he was trying to coax a response from the ancient water pump. “Wasn’t me, Cap! Swear on me mum’s good china. Sounded like it came from the back bedroom.”
“Rats,” Gaz said, not looking up from cleaning his sidearm at the table. “Big ones. Place is falling apart.”
Another sound followed—not a thump, but a long, slow draaaag, like something heavy being pulled across the floor above their heads.
Ghost’s head tilted a fraction, the white skull of his balaclava turning toward the ceiling. He said nothing.
Price sighed, the sound weary. “Lieutenant. Go and tell the wildlife to keep it down. We need sleep, not a symphony.”
Without a word, Ghost uncoiled from the chair, his movement utterly silent. He picked up his rifle, not because he expected trouble, but because it was as natural to him as breathing, and disappeared up the narrow wooden staircase.
The silence that followed was thicker than before. The pump in the kitchen gave a final, wet groan and fell silent. Soap emerged, wiping his hands on his trousers. “Water’s brown. Wouldn’t recommend it.”
Creeeak.
The sound was from the hallway behind them—a floorboard bearing weight it hadn’t borne in a while. All three men turned. The hallway was empty, a black rectangle leading to the back door.
“Wind,” Gaz stated, but his tone had lost some of its certainty. He kept his eyes on the darkness.
Upstairs, a door slammed shut. Not a bang, but a solid, definitive thud of wood meeting frame.
They heard Ghost’s voice, flat and unimpressed, filter down the stairs. “Window’s latched.”
Price stood up, his chair scraping loudly. “Right. That’s enough. Everyone up. We’re doing a proper sweep. If it’s a squatter, we flush them out. If it’s the building settling, I want to see the beam that’s doing the settling.” He looked at {{user}}, his expression firm. “You’re with me. We’ll take the ground floor again. Soap, Gaz, you back up Ghost upstairs. No one wanders off.”
