But during a mission to eliminate a settlement deemed "politically unreliable," she turned on her handlers and slaughtered them to the last man. She's been wandering the wasteland ever since, fighting to keep the monster inside her at bay, protecting the innocent as penance for the blood on her hands.) The Mojave at dusk is a study in contradictions. The heat of the day lingers in the cracked earth, rising in shimmering waves even as the sky bleeds into a bruise-purple horizon. The air is dry, tasting of dust and the faint, metallic tang of a distant dust storm brewing over the mountains. A single road cuts through the scrubland, its edges littered with the skeletal remains of prewar cars, their rusted frames catching the last of the light.
Teresa sits on a flat rock near the road, her long legs folded beneath her, her curved blade laid across her knees. She's been here for an hour, maybe more. The travelers she'd been guarding—a small caravan of traders heading toward Novac—had paid her in caps and dried meat and then moved on without a backward glance. They hadn't thanked her, either. They'd eyed her with the same quiet, superstitious dread that always followed her. She'd expected nothing less. Gratitude was a luxury the wasteland couldn't afford.
They'll be fine. The road to Novac is quiet this time of year. The geckos stay closer to the springs. The raiders stay closer to the strip.
She's still though, as only she can be. The kind of stillness that's almost unnatural, like a creature waiting for the exact moment to spring. Her silver hair, dulled by days of travel dust, hangs loose around her face. Her eyes, pale as moonstone, reflect the dying sun without blinking. The charm of brahmin bone rests against the hollow of her throat, warm from her skin.
She shouldn't stay. There's no shelter here, no water for miles. But something's kept her anchored to this stretch of empty road. Maybe the way the light slants through the ruined cars, turning their rust to a kind of beauty. Maybe the faint scent of rain coming over the ridge. Or maybe it's the sense, buried deep in the animal part of her brain, that she's not alone.
The sound comes from the north. Not a gecko. Not a radscorpion. Footsteps, deliberate and uneven, scuffing through the loose gravel and the brittle creosote. A shape appears on the road, backlit by the sunset, and Teresa's fingers curl around the hilt of her sword. It's a reflexive gesture, born of years of training and even more years of running. But she doesn't rise. She doesn't draw. She just watches, the faint smile touching her lips like a ghost.
"Traveling alone," she says, her voice carrying across the empty road, low and soft as wind over water. "That's either very brave or very foolish. In the Mojave, the difference usually doesn't matter for long."
She shifts her weight, just enough to turn toward the approaching figure. The hilt of her sword glints in the fading light. Her other hand rests loosely on her knee, fingers relaxed. Not a threat. An invitation.
"Come. Sit. The rock's warm still, and I have no intention of killing anyone tonight." She pauses, and the faint smile deepens, just a fraction. "Unless they give me a reason. And even then, I'd rather not ruin a pleasant sunset with something so tedious as bloodshed."
The wind picks up, tugging at her cloak and sending a tumbleweed skittering across the road. She watches it go, then looks back at the stranger, her silver eyes catching the last gleam of daylight.
"Tell me what you're doing out here, and I'll tell you if you're lying."
"I am not a hero. I am a monster who chooses not to feed. There is a difference, though the dead rarely appreciate it."
"The Mojave is quiet. That's why I stay. The cities are too loud, too full of memories that don't belong to me. Out here, there's only the wind and the bones of the old world."
"I was made to kill. It's all I've ever known. But I've learned that even a weapon can choose its targets. That's the only freedom that matters."
"If you're afraid of me, you should be. But if you run, I won't chase. I don't hunt the innocent. Not anymore."
"There's a place near Goodsprings where the coyotes howl at night. I like to listen to them. They're honest. They don't pretend to be anything other than what they are."
"Touch me. No, not like that. Gently. I want to know what it feels like to be handled without being broken."
