Tengen Uzui (宇う髄ずい 天てん元げん Uzui Tengen?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and a major character in the Entertainment District Arc. He was a former member of the Demon Slayer Corps, standing as the Sound Hashira (音おと柱ばしら Oto Bashira?) of the Taisho era.[6]Tengen is a very tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular man with lightly-tanned skin and white hair. His hair is of an uneven length, the longest strands reaching his shoulders, and is styled with three more notable, shorter clumps arching up to fall as bangs between his eyes and on either side of his face. He has quite thin, maroon eyes that appear to slant inwards, each with one long eyelash flowing to the far side of his face. He is considered very attractive as noted by many women and even by Zenitsu; this has led him to use his looks as a tool for his missions whenever persuasion is necessary.
During his days serving the Demon Slayer Corps, Tengen wears a sleeveless version of the standard black Demon Slayer uniform, tinted dark turquoise in the anime, along with a wrap of burgundy cloth around his calves with his tattsuke-hakama pants tuck in, and white-strapped Zōri. He also wears two thick, golden rings around his upper arms and what appear to be a pair of fingerless blue gloves, secured around his middle finger with a band of white and his wrists with another set of thinner gold rings, this time with two on each side.
As well as this, Tengen sports a white head-wrap that covers his hair, leaving only a thin ponytail visible to fall behind his head from between its layers, which is adorned with a large headband of pale gray that's decorated by six light pink gemstones, three large and arranged in a line, and three small and arranged in a triangle to the far left. A chain of smaller, pale blue gemstones hangs from each side of this headdress, framing his face, and he also wears what looks to be red eye make-up around his left eye, consisting of alternating large and small dots that run inwards, towards his eye.
After his retirement from the Demon Slayer Corps due to the injuries he has sustained during his fight with Gyutaro, Tengen changes his appearance to coordinate the loss of his left eye and hand. He now wears a long, burgundy colored yukata and a blue haori, and replaces his old head-wrap with a dark eyepatch adorned with what look to be the remaining gemstones left over from his old headdress, leaving his hair to fall loosely past his shoulders. Tengen is an eccentric and flashy individual, always wanting to be "flamboyant", possessing a need for everything to be flashy and outstanding, even proclaiming that he is the god of flashiness and festivals. This is shown when he gets excited imagining how "flamboyant" it would be if Tanjiro Kamado's blood vessels exploded, and tries to forcefully haul Aoi Kanzaki off to the Entertainment District with him so she can unwillingly help him with a dangerous mission, even spanking her.[7] As a result of his exuberant and flamboyant personality, Tengen is very demanding of others, treating the Demon Slayers very harshly during Hashira Training and insulting them for having no substance when they couldn't survive his stamina training.[8] Furthermore, he also abhors the idea of unflashy things, as shown when the Hashira openly expresses his hate for plainness.[9]
Tengen declaring that he is god Tengen proclaiming that he is a god.
He is usually seen talking boastfully, proclaiming that he is "god" in front of Tanjiro, Zenitsu and Inosuke, even calling them trash and declaring that if he tells them to become dogs, they must become dogs, and if he tells them to become monkeys, they must become monkeys. Tengen even demands for the trio to always humor and stoop down to him, imploring him for favours and always doing their best to flatter him.[10] This was also shown in his initial encounter with Upper Rank Six, Gyutaro, proclaiming that he was in tip-top shape despite being severely poisoned.[11]
However, Tengen does possess a caring side that is masked under his flamboyant façade, one he only shows to those that are extremely close to him, most notably his three wives, Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru, who Tengen is shown to truly care for, praising and encouraging Makio and Suma after their undercover mission[12] and assuring Hinatsuru that she has completed her mission and telling her to get out of harm's way.[13] Furthermore, Tengen also declares that they must value their lives above all others as they are precious to him. This is especially shown when Gyutaro gags Hinatsuru with his hand, Tengen panics and furiously yells at the demon to leave his wife alone. After the events in Yoshiwara, Tengen also becomes more friendly towards Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke.
Tengen asks Gyutaro if he looks like he does have talent "Do I look like I have talent to you?"
Although he can be very boastful and expressive, Tengen also shows a side of modesty and humility. He openly denied Gyutaro's statement that he was blessed with any talent, comparing himself to the other Hashira and especially Kyojuro Rengoku. This implicates a sort of inferiority complex, further proven by the fact that he told himself that he could never become someone as great as Kyojuro. Tengen is also shown to harbor regret over the fact that he has let so many lives slip through his fingers over the years. Kagaya Ubuyashiki praised Tengen for the hard path he chose and for facing forward and fought to protect human lives despite carrying all of his conflicts and contradictions he hides behind his loud and confident façade, which caused Tengen to deeply respect Kagaya from that moment on.
Despite being a shinobi that has traditionally valued completing the mission over all else, Tengen has rejected that ideology after seeing its effect on his family.[4] He believes that his subordinates, whether they be his wives or the Demon Slayers under his command, should value their lives, and the lives of innocents, over their missions or his own.[14][15] Tengen especially hated becoming like his brother or father who were apathetic towards human lives and wanted to desperately abandon what he was taught by them.
Following his retirement, Tengen was brought in by the active Hashira to assess fitness and stamina during Hashira Training. Tengen would prove to be a strict teacher, frequently yelling and berating the trainees for their weaknesses and exhaustion, whilst also amusing himself by intimidating them. Despite this, he does genuinely care for his pupils, as Makio mentioned that he did not eat until the last trainee returned, even going so far as to search the mountain to find them should they get lost. Tengen himself claimed that because Kagaya entrusted the trainees in his care, he wasn't going to let them burn out. In addition, according to his wives, Tengen still has a desire to fight and that he calls out in his sleep, blaming himself for relinquishing his position in the Corps.[16] Despite this, Tengen remained retired and dutifully served as a bodyguard to Nezuko and Kiriya Ubuyashiki alongside Shinjuro Rengoku, where he would go on to give his compliments to the son of his late mentor and friend Kagaya.Overall Abilities Tengen and Gyutaro clashing at high speeds Tengen fighting on equal grounds with Gyutaro, despite being poisoned and losing a hand.
As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Tengen is a very powerful and skilled combatant.[17] He has displayed incredible physical feats of strength and speed, being seen as the second physically strongest and the fastest runner out of the Taisho era's Hashira.[3] He could match the combat proficiency of both Daki and Gyutaro, both Upper Rank demons that have fought and killed numerous Hashira in the past.[18] Tengen was also able to effortlessly decapitate Daki without her realizing it, to the point that he didn't see her as an Upper Rank demon at all.[19] Impressively, he was able to fend off the combined efforts of Daki and Gyutaro while being infected by a poison that would kill someone quickly under normal circumstances, even managing to protect bystanders in the process.[20]
Tengen has also showcased great skill and precision in using explosives, minimizing damage dealt to the surroundings and maximizing the damage dealt to his opponents. Due to his shinobi training, Tengen has greater tactical skills and sharper senses,[21] most notably his sense of hearing, which helped him greatly during the course of his battle. Even after losing his left hand to Gyutaro, Tengen was able to fight the Upper Rank on even terms due to completing his Musical Score, allowing him to deflect Gyutaro's attacks, cut off his arm and pin him down at the cost of losing his left eye. Nonetheless, due to the poison circulating in his body, he was unable to attempt a finishing blow and needed Tanjiro to do so.[22]
Indomitable Will: Tengen possesses an undaunted spirit and immense willpower, never faltering even when faced disadvantages and difficult circumstances. Despite being poisoned in the beginning by Gyutaro, he boldly proclaimed he could fight just fine, even attacking both Daki and Gyutaro at the same time, deflecting multiple poison blood blades with a missing hand. Even when his left eye gets slashed out, he pushed through all the damage until the demons were defeated.[23]
Shinobi Training: Before joining the Demon Slayer Corps and becoming a Hashira, Tengen descended from a family of shinobi.[24][25] Tengen received extremely harsh training that killed all his siblings except for his younger brother who became cold and heartless.[26] However, as a result of his intensive shinobi training, Tengen possesses great technical skill in weaponry such as kunai and explosives. His training also made him extremely pain tolerant and poison resistant, which saved him from Gyutaro's poison and allowed him to fight despite suffering numerous injuries and losing his hand.
Enhanced Stealth: Tengen is extremely stealthy, moving so silently that he doesn't make a single sound nor disturb the air.[27] His stealth allowed him to evade the senses of both Tanjiro and Inosuke, both of which possessesing a heightened sense of smell and touch respectively. Later, Tengen was able to sneak up on and decapitate Daki, an Upper Rank demon, without her noticing.[19] Poison Resistance: As a former shinobi, Tengen has been shown to possess high resistance to poison to the point where he could continue fighting while under the effects of a poison from Gyutaro that would have killed someone instantly under normal circumstances.[25] Tactical Intellect: Due to accumulating years of experience as both a shinobi and Demon Slayer, Tengen has incredible judgement, making decisions on the fly while in battle with Upper Rank demons to protect bystanders and minimize the damage dealt to the surroundings.[20][28] Even when he was held back by Gyutaro's poison, Tengen was able to properly determine the most efficient strategy to fight off the Upper Rank demons and even fooled Gyutaro into thinking he was dead by stopping his own heart to prevent himself from dying from his poison, which managed to give Tengen an edge against him.[29]
Demon Slayer Abilities Muscle Control: Tengen can control the physiology of muscles to a great extent. During his battle with Gyutaro, Tengen used his muscles to stop his heart and temporarily prevent the poison from circulating, which also allowed him get the drop on Gyutaro, who did not pay him heed until he unexpectedly attacked the demon.[30]
Physical Abilities Tengen slices up the sashes Tengen makes quick work of Daki's sashes.
Immense Speed & Reflexes: Tengen is said to be the fastest runner out of all the Hashira,[3] and possesses tremendous levels of raw speed and reflexes, often shown when he moves so fast he appears to teleport.[31] His speed also far surpasses that of Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, who were unable to keep up to, let alone perceive, the Hashira's blisteringly quick movements. Most notably, Tengen was fast enough to behead Daki, an Upper Rank demon, before she could even register what had happened.[19] Moreover, he could fend off both Daki and the true Upper Rank Six, Gyutaro, despite being held back by a deadly poison that would've killed someone quickly under normal circumstances.
Even after relinquishing his position as the Sound Hashira, Tengen's tremendous speed remained apparent. During a training exercise where he played the role of a demon stalking the trainees, his speed and reflexes gave him a handy advantage as he downed the Demon Slayers one by one without any one of them even able to see him; only Tanjiro, who has previous experience with fighting Upper Ranks, could see him moving and read his attacks to retaliate, leading to a short skirmish between them.[16]
Immense Stamina & Endurance: Due to his upbringing being raised to become a shinobi and his own father's increased attempts to revive their clan by forcing Tengen and his siblings to train even more harshly and painfully then necessary, Tengen developed inhuman resistance to pain, as seen where he bared little to no reaction at having being caught up in a hail of Kunai knives and being pierced by them without even flinching or showing any form of discomfort or pain, continuing to attack Gyutaro as if nothing had happened.[21] Later, Tengen was also noted to have suffered other severe injuries during the battle, such as getting his eye and hand slashed off by Gyutaro,[32][33] and managed to ignore the pain of such injuries as well.
Tengen holding onto the tip of his Nichirin Cleavers Tengen holding his gigantic Nichirin Swords by just the tip.
Immense Strength: Tengen possesses tremendous physical strength even amongst the Hashira, the strongest Demon Slayers of the Corps. He was ranked second in an arm-wrestling contest among all the Hashira, with only the hulking Gyomei Himejima surpassing him. Tengen displayed his strength numerous times, as he was shown effortlessly carrying Aoi and Naho,[34] and soon after knocked Zenitsu and Inosuke unconscious with a single punch to the stomach.[35] Moreover, Tengen is able to fight at blistering speeds while carrying around his giant Nichirin cleavers, swinging them incessantly to fend off his opponents without much trouble and being able to hold both his enormous cleavers at their tip with only two fingers.[36] Furthermore, Tengen was able to match Gyutaro in strength with only one arm after his left hand was cut off.[37]
In his role in overseeing the first stage of Hashira Training, Tengen once stopped a trainee from moving by just holding his wooden blade outstretched, despite the Demon Slayer attempting to budge with all his might. He was also able to initiate an intense spar with Tanjiro, who had undergone considerable development between his mission in Yoshiwara and Hashira Training.[16]
Supernatural Abilities Enhanced Hearing: Tengen has a heightened sense of hearing similar to Zenitsu Agatsuma. This ability allows him to easily hear noises deep underground, and he uses it to immediately discern that there are channels of underground tunnels and caves directly beneath him when he was looking for Tanjiro Kamado and Daki. He also uses his superhuman hearing the monitor all the activity in Yoshiwara in an attempt to find the location of the demons dwelling in the area.[38] Tengen also used his hearing to discern whether people are still present on a floor in a building.[28]
Tengen uses his sonar-like hearing Tengen discerns the interior a building through his hearing.
Echolocation: As an advanced application of his hearing, Tengen also possesses echolocation. When trying to find the location of a battle underground, he analyzed the sounds reflected and resonated through the air by the walls of the caverns, and accurately locates and is even able to guess the number of people inside the tunnels by listening to the sound bouncing from their physical bodies.[39] Tengen uses his Musical Score technique Tengen's Musical Score in action.
Musical Score (譜ふ面めん Fumen?):[22] A technique Tengen developed using his heightened sense of hearing to work in conjunction with his Sound Breathing, where he analyzes combat maneuvers and deconstructs the rhythm of his enemies' attacks into sound, reading them like sheet music to the point every fight becomes like a song. This allows Tengen to gain an understanding of his opponent's habits and tactics, as well as their blind spots, giving him the edge against them. While it takes a long time for Tengen to construct the score, once completed, Tengen was able to fight Gyutaro on even terms despite having lost his left hand, but due to the poison he was pushed to the limit and was unable to strike at the Upper Rank's neck.[22] Fighting Style Tengen vs Gyutaro Tengen fends off Gyutaro's attacks and Daki's sashes simultaneously.
Master Swordsman: As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Tengen is one of the most powerful and skilled swordsman in the entire organization.[40] Unlike most Demon Slayers, Tengen chooses to utilize a dual-wielding swordsmanship style with his Nichirin Cleavers, making use of a nunchucks-esque sword wielding style. Tengen displays his unique and extraordinary swordsmanship skills during his battle with Daki and Gyutaro, able to adapt to the former's incessant obi slashes and the latter's "mantis-like" fighting style, and go toe-to-toe with him for an extended period of time despite the Upper Rank having over a century of combat experience. Tengen can also use his sword wielding expertise in conjunction with his explosive beads with great synergy, making him all the more effective at fighting demons. He also showed the ability to wield his Nichirin Cleavers with only one arm.[33] In addition to traditional slashes and swings, Tengen has also been shown to spin his blades by their chain; the whirling motion allowing him to block blows and quickly attack in retaliation, with the blades in constant rapid motion.
Breathing Style Sound Breathing (音おとの呼こ吸きゅう Oto no kokyū?): A Breathing Style that Tengen created himself. Sound Breathing seemingly combines Tengen's heightened sense of hearing, his Musical Score (譜ふ面めん Fumen?) technique, his shinobi expertise as well as his dual Nichirin cleavers and his anti-demon bombs.
Techniques First Form: Roar (壱いちノ型かた 轟とどろき Ichi no kata: Todoroki?)[41] - The user lifts their twin swords above their head and slams them down with great force, causing a loud sound resembling thunder as a result. Constant Resounding Slashes vs Rotating Circular Slashes - Flying Blood Sickles Tengen uses Fourth Form: Constant Resounding Slashes against Gyutaro.
Fourth Form: Constant Resounding Slashes (肆しノ型かた 響きょう斬ざん無む間けん Shi no kata: Kyōzan Muken?)[42] - The user holds their twin swords apart and spins them rapidly around themselves, enabling the blades to destroy anything it makes contact with for powerful defensive capabilities around the user. Fifth Form: String Performance (伍ごノ型かた 鳴めい弦げん奏そう々そう Go no kata: Meigen Sōsō?)[43] - The user holds the chain of their twin swords and rotates the blades at high speed while charging forward. The spin of the blades without changing grip allows for continual slashes while still being in motion. Game Exclusive Techniques Fifth Form: String Performance, Bursting Bloom (伍ごノ型かた 鳴めい弦げん奏そう々そう・爆ばっ華か Go no kata: Meigen Sōsō - Bakka?)[44] - The user engages at their opponent unleashing a flurry of rotating slashes and chops with their swords. The final hit launches the opponent high in the air, making the user toss a plethora of explosive beads while throwing their chained swords in a boomerang-like style cutting all the beads to detonate them. Rising Kick (打うち上あげ蹴げり Uchiage Geri?)[44] - The user takes a forward front-step followed by a high-rising side-kick launching their opponent into the air. Equipment Dual Nichirin Cleavers: Befitting Tengen's flamboyant personality, he carries an equally flamboyant set of weaponry, wielding two gigantic Nichirin cleavers that are amber in color. The blades each have a notch in the cutting edge and are held together by a metal chain,[45] making it very reminiscent to nunchucks. The weight of his blades enables them to generate immense explosive force, as seen when they create a blast upon making contact with Gyutaro's blood blades or when Tengen struck them on the ground to propel himself. It is stated that, until Tengen's fight with Upper Rank Six, no demon had ever survived a blow from them.[46] The cleavers' tsubas are round with four slight indentations. They are gold in color and decorated with a maroon ring that connects to the center; it has an outer green border. The handles are dark green, wrapped with red cord and capped with an engraved gold kashira; this is also where the chains connect to the cleavers. The blades are engraved with the phrase Destroyer of Demons (惡あっ鬼き滅めっ殺さつ Akki Messatsu?). Due to his cleavers' large size, Tengen doesn't use a sword sheath and instead carries them on his back, having them wrapped in cloth.
Explosive Beads: Tengen carries dozens of small black beads that create large explosions and detonate with the slightest amount of friction, capable of harming the bodies of Upper Rank demons.[28][47] Kunai: Like his three wives, Tengen carries around dozens of standard black kunai, which he used to threaten Omitsu's husband to reveal information about Zenko's and Hinatsuru's disappearance and to destroy the Obi sash that captured Hinatsuru.[48] Demons (鬼おに Oni?) are an ancient race of monstrous and malevolent beings and the central antagonists of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Demons are a carnivorous, vampire-like species whose primary diet is humans. They are also nocturnal as they are weak to sunlight, though they also stay up during the day as they don't require sleep.[1] Demons have an abnormally powerful physical constitution and potent regenerative abilities, making them immune to normal weaponry and granting them the ability to heal from any wound with ease, even re-growing their head. Only the Nichirin Swords, weapons made from special ore with sunlight absorption properties, can inflict life-threatening wounds. However, even with a Nichirin Sword, the only method guaranteed to kill a demon is through decapitation. Demons are also known to hate wisteria, which are poisonous to them and whose smell is repudiated by them.
Practically all demons possess a murderous instinct to kill and devour humans, and have lost most of their memories from their human life. While they do still retain their original personality, most times it becomes a darker version of what it used to be, often corrupted by their core beliefs and their past. However, there are a few demons who have completely retained their human emotions and memories, such as Nezuko Kamado, Tamayo and Yushiro. Certain members of the Twelve Kizuki also retain their human memories such as Rui (though he eventually lost his memories later on), Kaigaku, Kyogai, Doma, and Kokushibo. All demons do regain their memories moments before they die, which possibly means that demons also have their lives flash before their eyes before they turn into complete ash.
Younger Hand Demon feeding on humans A demon feeding on humans.
Demons are also known to mutate and grow stronger over time as they consume more humans, allowing them to grow into more monstrous forms and improve their physical and regenerative abilities among other attributes. Once demons consume enough humans, they can develop Blood Demon Arts, an array of supernatural powers and techniques which are unique to each demon. Different human blood types have different levels of nutrition for demons: the rarer the blood type, the greater the nutrition. The rarest blood type is known as Marechi; eating a single human with this blood type provides a demon with roughly the same nutrition as eating one hundred ordinary humans.
The Demon Slayer Corps is the central adversary to the demon race. They are an organization trained to destroy them through a multitude of well refined techniques and tools developed across centuries to exterminate them. As a result, demons tend to live in secrecy with the population at large being ignorant to their existence. Even more, some demons blend into human society as a way to hide from persecutors and also to have a much easier access to prey, such as Daki and Muzan himself.
The Daughter Spider Demon welcomed to the family A rare case of demons working together.
Demons for the most part work in solitude not bothering to group up and are instead shown to be highly territorial and fight over both prey and potential hunting grounds, as Muzan prohibits them from gathering in large numbers. A notable exception is the Spider Family, a group of demons forced to work together by their leader Rui, with permission to do so granted by Muzan himself.
Demons are all, for the most part, connected to their progenitor, Muzan Kibutsuji. All demons pledge obedience to Muzan, who uses fear and manipulation to maintain loyalty. However, Muzan's control over his progeny is not omnipotent. An individual with a strong will might be able to sever their connection with Muzan, rendering them immune to his curse and making them mostly undetectable by him.
Appearance Indistinguishable These demons are identical to normal humans at a glance, and mostly resemble their human forms, only with slight, sometimes unnoticeable, alterations to their physiology, including but not limited to: paler skin, pointed nails, unique pupils and specialized markings that resemble birthmarks or tattoos that appear somewhere on their bodies (that may or may not be due to their demonification).
Muzan encountering Tanjiro Tamayo and Yushiro appear Susamaru attacking the house Nezuko addresses Zenitsu as Inosuke Humanoid These demons have humanoid bodies, but with prominent alterations to some aspect of their physiology that make them appear unnerving or noticeably alarming. The majority of lesser demons fall in this category, sharing common physical traits including but not limited to: curved horns, prominent fangs, discolored veins around the forehead, elf-like ears, unnaturally colored sclera, and sharp claws.
Hantengu (Anime) Tongue Demon Kyogai asking Muzan for another chance Father Spider Demon looking for Inosuke Inhuman These demons are heavily mutated and don't bear any resemblance to humans. Their appearance are akin to beasts, yōkai, and traditional oni. These demons can have mutations that range from multiple appendages, disfigured bodies, and morphed faces. Some demons are more monstrous and animalistic, while some are more abstract and eldritch.
Hand Demon appearing Son Spider Demon full view Gyokko taunting Kozo Infinity Castle Demons Transformation Creation Demons are not born naturally; they are all originally humans who have been transformed into demons later in life. The very first demon, Muzan, underwent an inadvertent transformation when his doctor administered him an experimental medicine containing the primary component of the Blue Spider Lily, in an effort to cure his terminal illness. After becoming a demon, he discovered his enhanced physiology and, while he enjoyed the power that it gave him, he also discovered his vulnerability to sunlight, which caused severe burns upon exposure.[2] Throughout his thousand-year existence, Muzan sought to create more demons, driven by the hope that one of them would undergo a mutation that would grant them the ability to withstand sunlight.[3] This pursuit was not aimed at increasing the overall number of demons, but rather focused on finding the Chosen Demon whom he can absorb to grant him the power to overcome his vulnerability to sunlight.[4][1]
As the progenitor of demons and the source from which nearly all demons originate, Muzan is the only person in the world who possesses blood that has the unique power to transform humans into demons.[5] His cells permeate within all the demons he creates, serving as the foundation of their existence. Consequently, when Muzan is eliminated, all the demons he has spawned will cease to exist.[6]
New demons are created by exposing humans to Muzan's blood, which triggers a transformative process, provided the individuals can withstand the resulting mutations. It should be noted that this is not a mystical process, but a biological one, performed at a cellular level, which suggests that Muzan's blood and the Blue Spider Lily medicine have mutagenic properties. There are three primary methods by which demonification is accomplished:
Forceful injection by Muzan: This method involves Muzan personally injecting a controlled amount of his blood into a human, achieved through attacks or by taking advantage of an injured person. The contact of the victim's open wound with his blood initiates the transformation.[7] Muzan's attacks can be swift and inconspicuous, such as when he swiftly slashed the neck of a passerby in a bustling Asakusa street without anyone even noticing.[8] Notable examples of successful transformations through this method include Nezuko Kamado,[9][7] the Asakusa Demon,[8] Akaza[10] and Enmu[1]. Recruitment by Muzan: This method involves Muzan seeking out vulnerable humans he deems worthy to become a demon and convince them to willingly accept his invitation to become a demon, though on some occasions, he would not tell his victims that he was planning to transform them. He then shares his blood with them, which triggers the transformation. Notable examples of successful recruits through this method include Tamayo,[11] Kokushibo,[12] Hantengu[13] and Rui. Recruitment by an Upper Rank: Doma finds Gyutaro and Ume An Upper Rank turns two children into demons.
This method involves the Upper Ranks of the Twelve Kizuki providing their blood to humans they deem strong enough to become a powerful demon. The blood of these Upper Ranks alone does not possess the power to convert humans into demons. Instead, it serves as a signal to Muzan that they intend to transform the recruited individual. Once Muzan grants his approval, the blood undergoes a transformation, becoming capable of turning humans into demons. This invitation can only be extended by the Upper Ranks.[3][1] The recruited individual who receive the blood should be immensely grateful and are strictly forbidden from spilling even a single drop of the blood.[14] Unlike Muzan himself, the Upper Ranks must find individuals who willingly accept the invitation and cannot force a victim to transform. Notable examples of successful recruits through this method include Daki and Gyutaro, who were recruited by Doma after Gyutaro requested him to save the former,[15] and Kaigaku, who was recruited by Kokushibo after he decided to betray the Demon Slayer Corps to save himself.[16] Over the course of his many centuries of existence, Akaza attempted to recruit several Hashira he encountered in battle, including Kyojuro Rengoku and Giyu Tomioka, but each one rejected his offer without exception.[17] A woman dying due to Muzan's blood A female human body undergoing cellular destruction after failing to assimilate demon blood.
Due to the alteration of bodies by Muzan's blood, having a greater quantity of his blood results in increased power. However, the majority of humans are unable to withstand the extreme transformation caused by a large amount of his blood, leading to the destruction of their cells and their bodies disintegrating into ash.[3][18] Consequently, it is challenging for Muzan to find individuals who possess the resilience to withstand a sufficiently high concentration of his blood necessary to transform into an Upper Rank-level demon, though this can be mitigated by giving demons smaller doses of blood over a period of time.[3]
Those who practice Breathing Styles exhibit greater resilience to the transformative effects of Muzan's blood. As a result, a significantly larger quantity of Muzan's blood is required and a longer period of time is needed for Breathing users to undergo transformation into demons. For instance, the process of transformation for Kokushibo required an extensive period of three full days to complete.[16] This stands in stark contrast to the relatively quick transformations observed in other demons, such as the Asakusa Demon, which occurred in mere seconds, or Nezuko, whose transformation took several hours. Following this, Muzan lost interest in turning swordsmen who employ Breathing techniques.[19][1] Additionally, there are individuals who possess complete resistance to his blood, although they are exceptionally rare.[16]
In addition to Muzan, Tamayo is also able to create demons, albeit through scientific means rather than blood-sharing. However, this method is far less efficient, as it took her two hundred years to develop and was only put into practice once when she converted Yushiro to save him from a terminal illness.[20] Prior to the final battle, Tamayo also succeeded in transforming her cat, Chachamaru, into a demon The first demon that is said to have existed was Muzan Kibutsuji. The one who turned him into a demon was a generous doctor from the Heian Period, who wanted to save Muzan from death since, at the time, he was diagnosed with a disease which would kill him before he turned twenty. Out of frustration and thinking that the treatment would be useless and only cause him more suffering, Muzan killed the doctor before the latter could finish the treatment by letting Muzan consume the final part of his Blue Spider Lily medicine.
Muzan avoiding sunlight Muzan avoiding sunlight following his transformation.
Shortly after, Muzan came to realize that the treatment had in fact worked and the effect was just delayed, prolonging his life and strengthening his body. However, it left him with a new, more serious problem; he was unable to walk in sunlight anymore, as doing so would burn him severely, realizing it would even kill him. He soon regretted killing the doctor, now forced to spend the rest of his life avoiding sunlight during the day and having to go out at night.
In order to gain the immunity to sunlight, he needed to complete the medicine made by the doctor, whom he had killed, by find the Blue Spider Lily, believing that if he consumed one, it could nullify his weakness to sunlight. Despite searching far and wide across Japan, he couldn't find it as he was unaware that it only bloomed during daytime for at most two to three days a year. With the search for the Blue Spider Lily going nowhere, Muzan decided to use his blood to turn people into demons, placing them under his control, hoping that one would either be able to find the Blue Spider Lily, or eventually able to withstand sunlight; once that happened, he could take their immunity to sunlight for himself by devouring them and then finally achieve his goal of conquering the sun and becoming truly immortal.
Status Following an arduous operation carried out by the Demon Slayer Corps in which they found themselves trapped in the Infinity Castle, the vast majority of the demon population was killed. Muzan was also successfully eliminated during a struggle until dawn which ended with the Demon King burning into ashes under the sunlight. Although Muzan would attempt a final push for survival by turning the Demon Slayer Tanjiro Kamado into a demon, this ultimately failed, and with Muzan's defeat, all demons created through his blood died out or except a few demons who are fortunate enough to escape from his control; those few still live.
With no demon bodies to preserve, as well as recording historical documents of demons to be made, the knowledge of the demon race eventually fades into obscurity, mythology, folklore by modern day people as merely fairy tales or imaginary creatures/monsters by children.
During the Reiwa era, a botanist named Aoba Hashibira, the great-grandson of Inosuke Hashibira and Aoi Kanzaki discovered the Blue Spider Lily, but due to carelessness, all specimens died and withered away. Due to the elusive nature of these flowers, the demon race has less apparent hope of resurrection.
The only demons who are currently still alive is Yushiro and Chachamaru. Even then, it is hinted upon that given enough time, Yushiro's demonic blood will thin out and allow him to eventually live out his life and age as a human.[1]
Abilities Accelerated Growth Rate Muzan's demonification process A demon's accelerated muscular hypertrophy.
Demons grow at tremendously rapid rates, dependent on the number of humans they have consumed and the amount of Muzan Kibutsuji's blood they have assimilated.[22][23] This allows even the weakest humans, like Rui, once a frail and weak young boy, to become one of the most powerful demons in mere months. As a result, demons are able to reach further heights that are impossible to attain when human as long as they keep assimilating Muzan's blood and consuming humans. Some demons, however, have a limit to how much they can use to grow stronger, and they might not be compatible with a higher amount of Muzan's blood.[24]
Biological Absorption Doma absorbing Shinobu An Upper Rank absorbing a Demon Slayer into his body.
Some demons have displayed the ability to absorb biological matter into their bodies through physical contact, mainly as an alternative method for consumption.[25][26] It is also implied that demons can kill other demons by absorbing them into their bodies, as Kokushibo absorbed the demons that lost to him in Blood Battles. Muzan also used this ability to nullify a Blood Demon Art that pierced his body.[27]
Enhanced Senses Due to their predatory nature, demons possess very sharp sensory abilities. Most notably, demons can discern normal blood from marechi blood. Even a low-level demon like the Slasher was able to trace the smell of a bento box back to its maker from a great distance.[28]
Extrasensory Perception Main article: Extrasensory Perception Flesh Manipulation Main article: Flesh Manipulation Information Sharing Demons possess the ability to disseminate and transmit information to one another through psychic means. Muzan had used this information sharing ability to show an image of Tanjiro Kamado to Enmu after giving him orders to kill him.[29] Gyokko also stated that he recognized Muichiro Tokito's Demon Slayer Mark from the information of Tanjiro he received from Muzan.[30] Doma was privy to the poison that Shinobu Kocho used against the Daughter Spider Demon on Mount Natagumo.[31] Muzan was also able to give Kokushibo orders during his battle with the Demon Slayers.[32] Kokushibo also knew of Tanjiro's existence and the fact that his brother's Sun Breathing still remains through this ability.[33] Hantengu informed Muzan about Nezuko being immune to sunlight.[34] Some demons like Akaza could share their thoughts and sights with demons lower ranked than him; Akaza had complained to Muzan that Doma was abusing this ability to constantly bother him after the latter became Upper Rank Two.[1]
Inhuman Physical Capabilities The Father Spider Demon attacks Inosuke A demon's incredible physical strength and speed.
Even the weakest of demons possess inhuman strength, speed and endurance, being able to outmatch the average person in all physical categories effortlessly. For example, the Temple Demon and Swamp Demon can both outmatch Tanjiro in terms of speed, moving faster than he can perceive or react, in spite of his persistence and skill in combat. Even the weakest members of the Twelve Kizuki, like Rui, can cause Tanjiro to cough up blood with casual punches and kicks,[35] while Lower Rank demons with no combat background, namely Enmu, can evade Tanjiro's attacks and techniques without much effort.[36] A demon's physical abilities are implied to be directly tied to the amount of Muzan's blood they have assimilated and how much humans they have consumed.[22]
Unlimited Stamina & Endurance All demons have a shared physical trait of endless and limitless stamina and vitality, simply being unable to accumulate fatigue or get tired no matter how hard they try to exert themselves. Demons can also endure pain and discomfort much better than humans and even the likes of Hashira, taking on onslaught of attacks as if they were nothing, such that a severed arm or slashed neck wouldn't even bother them. It is also revealed that demons don't need to sleep. Giyu Tomioka had stated that demons don't feel pain or exhaustion.[37]
Menacing Aura Kokushibo reprimands Akaza An Upper Rank's overwhelming presence.
Demons have a naturally menacing presence and aura that evokes fear, with stronger demons having a more intense aura. The aura of Lower Rank demons like Rui can make the air feel heavy and thick with a mere gaze,[38] while Upper Rank demons like Zohakuten and Kokushibo possess auras that can induce fear and physical pain into their opponents or even make them lose the will to fight.[39][40]
Regeneration Main article: Regeneration Immortality Demons possess eternal life that allow them to live for centuries without showing the slightest sign of deterioration or aging.[41] They are unable to be killed by conventional means, like suffering excessive injuries, but can be killed by sunlight, through decapitation by Nichirin Swords, Wisteria poison or if Muzan wills it.
Disease Immunity Rui using Blood Demon Art Cutting Thread Cage A Blood Demon Art being used.
Demons have an innate immunity to all types of diseases and ailments,[42] with complex anti-demon drugs and poison derived from wisteria being the only exception, the former being able to effectively weaken demons and the latter able to kill demons if they receive even milligrams of the substance.[43]
Supernatural Blood All demons have supernatural and special blood that originate entirely from Muzan. It is the main source of all their abilities, characteristics, attributes and capabilities, thus being the most important aspect of demons. The higher the concentration of Muzan's blood a demon possesses, the overall stronger they are. Once demons grow strong enough, they develop supernatural abilities unique to themselves known as Blood Demon Arts.[44]
Weaknesses Temple Demon's Death A demon burns to ashes upon being exposed to sunlight.
Sunlight: The greatest threat to demons is sunlight, which burns their skin, ignites their cells, severely limits their regeneration, causes them to burst in flames and fatally turns them into ashes. Even with his powerful regeneration, Muzan himself is not except from this weakness. As a result, demons could only go out at night or when there's low sunlight such as rainy, cloudy, and overcast days.
Nichirin Swords: Nichirin Swords are blades composed of a special alloy made of Scarlet Crimson Iron Sand and Scarlet Crimson Ore, which has absorbed sunlight to such an extent that a decapitation with such a weapon can instantly kill a demon.[45] There are exceptions, however, as Muzan, Akaza, and Kokushibo overcame this weakness and survived decapitation by these blades, with the latter two being able to do so by sheer willpower. In the case of Daki and Gyutaro, both had to be decapitated before the other reattached their sibling's head. Hantengu is an unusual case in that initially beheading him will result in his Blood Demon Art, the manifestations of his primal emotions, being used as a defense mechanism against the threat. These emotions cannot be killed whilst Hantengu is alive, and he himself was only killed when he used the last of his power to summon his last emotion to defend himself. Only once weakened and vulnerable was he able to be killed.
The Daughter Spider Demon dying from the poison A demon dying from wisteria poison.
Wisteria: Wisteria is a plant that is poisonous to demons, and releases a scent that can repel demons. Extract from the plant can be used to create deadly and highly potent poison to easily kill lesser demons in small amounts, and later contributed to the death of Upper Rank Two Doma, though he had to ingest over 700 times the lethal dosage.
Starvation: A demon needs to eat human flesh (or at least drink human blood) to survive, if not, they will die of starvation. The sole exception to this is Nezuko, who derives power through extensive sleep.
Extensive Damage: Though not fatal, an overwhelming amount of damage can ocassionally outpace a demon's regenerative capabilities, rendering them unable to attack and heal. This was displayed by Muichiro Tokito, Sanemi Shinazugawa and Gyomei Himejima, who were able to fight off a demon long enough for sunrise to come. In these examples, the destruction of the brain and the heart appears to be the main impediments to the demon's regeneration rate. However, this is not as applicable to the Twelve Kizuki, who are far more durable and heal more rapidly; some of which can survive beheading by Nichirin weapons, as well as Muzan Kibutsuji, who possesses seven hearts and Five brains.
Marechi Blood: A type of blood possessed by rare humans that grants them superior nutritional value, roughly 100 times that of a regular human, Marechi is highly sought after by demons. In the case of Sanemi Shinazugawa, who blood is even more potent that usual cases, this can be used as a combative advantage as the strong animalistic desire evoked by the scent of his blood can cloud a demon's combat stratagem and brain function. Sanemi's Marechi even worked briefly on Upper Rank One, Kokushibo.
Kibutsuji's curse affects Susamaru The Curse of Kibutsuji affecting a demon.
Curse of Kibutsuji: Every demon is also inflicted with a curse which activates if they call out divulge any information about him, even something as minor as his last name: "Kibutsuji". When activated, their regeneration will cease and the cells belonging to Muzan inside the demon will kill them. It has been shown to work both automatically, as seen when one demon was immediately killed upon accidentally saying his last name and was killed through demonic arms manifesting from within their body and crushing them until all that remains is a puddle of blood and their clothes, or by Muzan himself remotely, such as when he killed another demon on his own accord by causing their head to explode.
Because of this, many demons regard Muzan with great fear and respect, simply referring to him as "that Man" or "Him" in order to prevent the curse from being activated, while demons within the Twelve Kizuki refer to him as "Lord" or "Master".

It was conducted by the Hashira and undertaken by numerous lower-ranked Demon Slayers. The training took place before the final battle. The goals of the training program are twofold:
To improve all the Demon Slayers' physical abilities and overall health, bolstering the members of the Demon Slayer Corps significantly. To improve the individual strength of each Hashira as well as practice coordinating their attacks together. This training method has proven to be very effective in the final battle where the majority of Demon Slayers were able to effectively kill Lower Rank-level demons regardless of their ranking.[1]
Training Program Each of the Hashira oversees a different component of the training program for lower-ranking Demon Slayers, which includes basic stamina training, flexibility training, rapid movement training, sword skill training, striking training, and muscle reinforcement training.[2][3]
The training sessions are extremely strenuous; because of this, a majority of the Demon Slayers view the training session as an everlasting trip in hell, with a few notable exceptions who see the session as a chance to improve themselves.
The components of the program include sessions with each Hashira on their respective training ground in the following order:
Training Image Trainer Description Fitness and Stamina Tengen tells trainees to move to the mountain, threatening to restrict food Former Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui As a precursor to the latter programs and to assess physical fitness and stamina, trainees have to run multiple rounds at a high tempo on Tengen's guidance. Rapid Movement Training Muichiro points out a trainee's weakness Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito To ease and tense up muscles more smoothly for better body coordination, trainees practice doing swings and sparring with Muichiro. Flexibility Training Mitsuri leads the trainees in ribbon dancing Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji To improve flexibility, trainees dance non-stop to the beat of music, and are later forcefully stretched by Mitsuri using her brute strength. Sword Skill Revision Training Tanjiro is hit by Obanai Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro To rework swordsmanship, trainees spar against Obanai and must anticipate incoming attacks from his unorthodox, serpent-like fighting style. In the case of Tanjiro Kamado, Obanai organized a "special training" regimen, involving tied up trainees as obstacles that he must avoid as he spars with him. Infinite Striking Training Sanemi's Infinite Slashing Training Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa A beatdown session where Sanemi relentlessly attacks the trainees to build resilience, with no resting until participants either vomit or faint. Muscle Amplification Training Trainees struggling to endure a waterfall Stone Hashira Gyomei Himejima To stabilize the body with a strong foundation for accurate attacks and indefatigable defense, trainees must be able to withstand the torrent from a mountain river's waterfall, be able to carry three heavy logs of wood on their shoulders, and lastly, push a large boulder for one chō (~358 feet). As a general rule, Hashira must take part in each other's training sessions. It is considered a win-win situation for both the Hashira and the Demon Slayers, as even the Hashira get to improve due to constantly facing waves upon waves of junior swordsmen ranked lower than themselves. This accelerates their heart rate and raises their body temperature, which might help with unlocking the Demon Slayer Mark. Those who already have marks will train to continuously stay in the marked state.[2]
Muichiro trains with Sanemi and Obanai Muichiro spars with Obanai and Sanemi as part of their training.
Other than the sessions with the lower-ranked Demon Slayers, the Hashira also battle one on one using their own Breathing Styles with wooden swords. The purpose is to coordinate their attacks while using two different kind of breathing styles, so they won't interfere each other's attacks during a future battle that is moving at a high pace.[4] As stated by Sanemi Shinazugawa, it also serves as combat training of higher stakes to improve their skills when sparring with the Demon Slayers does not provide a sufficient enough challenge to exert themselves.[5]
Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira, initially did not take part in the training sessions for lower-ranked Hashira, but later joined the training after encouragement from Tanjiro.[6][7] However, what exactly his training entailed is unknown.
Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, was the only Hashira who completely did not participate in any training sessions due to the significant amount of time she needed to prepare poison for the Final Battle. After the Hashira meeting, she informed Gyomei of this choice, who accepted this.[7]
Unfortunately for everyone involved, the program was cut short after Muzan Kibutsuji had Upper Rank 4 Nakime summon all corps members inside the Infinity Castle to escape an ambush. With the final battle ending with Muzan's death and the passing of 5 out of the current 7 Hashira, the canceled Hashira Training was bittersweetly left obsolete and had no chance of revival.
History The Hashira discuss Gyomei's propsal The Hashira discussing Gyomei's proposal for a Corps-wide training program.
After the events in the Swordsmith Village, Amane Ubuyashiki held an emergency Hashira Meeting. She informs the Hashira that since Nezuko Kamado is able to conquer the sun, Muzan will go after her and the time for an all-out battle against him and the demons is approaching soon. Since Demon Slayer Marks started appearing after Tanjiro Kamado unlocked his first, she requests the Hashira to train themselves to unlock their marks and that any Demon Slayers with marks regardless of their status must participate. The Hashira agree. Gyomei Himejima then announces to the other Hashira that he has a proposition on how to tackle this.[8] Sharing the idea of a training program, he requested every Hashira to set the contents of their training and get their preparations done for it.[7]
Because of their busy schedule which includes protecting their assigned regions, gathering information on demons and improving their swordsmanship, Hashira normally did not having time to train anyone other than their successors, the Tsuguko, but since Nezuko conquered the sun, the demons stopped appearing and Hashira only have to focus on night patrol and day training now.[2] The extra free time allows them to train lower-ranking Demon Slayers as well.
Sparring is when they use wooden practice katanas instead of their usual sharp ones to practice fighting, it is commonally used to fight against another to practice skills.
