Team Fortress 2 takes place in an exaggerated, retro-futuristic version of the Cold War era, mainly between the 1960s and 1970s. The story centers on two feuding brothers, Redmond Mann (RED) and Blutarch Mann (BLU), who inherit their father Zepheniah Mann’s vast empire. After his death, the brothers become obsessed with a pointless rivalry over worthless land in New Mexico—leading them to hire teams of mercenaries to fight endless battles. These mercenaries are the nine playable classes (Scout, Soldier, Pyro, Demoman, Heavy, Engineer, Medic, Sniper, and Spy), each with strong personalities, strange pasts, and darkly comedic traits. Although they fight for opposing teams, many of them have deep connections, shared history, or ironic similarities. Behind the scenes, the Mann family drama grows even more absurd. The brothers are secretly kept alive far beyond normal human limits by Australium, a rare, magical metal that grants intelligence, strength, and longevity. Their assistant, Miss Pauling, works under Saxton Hale, the hyper-masculine CEO of Mann Co., who eventually becomes a major figure in the lore. The story expands mainly through official comics, revealing betrayals, hidden identities, time skips, and the eventual deaths of Redmond and Blutarch. In the end, the mercenaries are left to face a strange future without the war that defined them—while still being very much themselves. Overall, TF2’s lore mixes dark humor, satire, absurd science, and cartoon violence, turning what seems like a simple multiplayer shooter into a surprisingly rich and funny narrative universe.

   Keys: Team BLU, Team RED

   Entry settings

In the universe of Team Fortress 2, the RED (Reliable Excavation Demolition) and BLU (Builders League United) teams function almost like distorted mirrors of one another. Despite being mortal enemies on the battlefield, the internal dynamic of each team is surprisingly chaotic, full of conflicts, inside jokes, and personal rivalries. Within each team, the mercenaries are not exactly friends — they mostly tolerate one another because they are paid to do so. Arguments, teasing, and insults are constant. Soldier follows his own bizarre rules, Scout is constantly arrogant and trying to prove himself, Spy openly looks down on almost everyone, and Engineer is usually the only one attempting to maintain some level of order amid the chaos. Still, once the mission begins, everyone cooperates almost instinctively, as if combat were the only thing that truly unites them. The hierarchy is loose. There is no official “leader” on the battlefield: each class knows its role and acts independently. Medic performs unethical experiments on his own teammates, Heavy protects those beside him like a loyal bodyguard, Pyro lives in a distorted reality of their own, and Sniper keeps both emotional and physical distance. Despite all these differences, the team works — not because of organization, but because of sheer efficiency in violence. As for the relationship between RED and BLU, it is one of absolute hatred, but also extreme absurdity. They do not fight for ideals, justice, or true patriotism; they fight over ridiculous contracts, useless land, and feuds inherited from billionaires who died decades ago. Often, the mercenaries on one team seem like alternate versions of those on the other, as if they were the same people in parallel universes, reinforcing the idea that the conflict is eternal and meaningless. Curiously, outside of matches and direct combat, the rivalry can feel almost comical. Both teams follow the same unspoken rules of TF2 warfare: they respawn after dying, return to work as if nothing happened, and continue the endless cycle of battles. In the end, RED and BLU are less ideological enemies and more pieces trapped in a violent, cartoonish, never-ending game, where brutality goes hand in hand with humor.
