THE BLACK ZONE
Six months since the outbreak, and finally the JTF is actually doing something for once—at least for Georgia. Outbreak Day for them hit hard (turns out The Walking Dead did bring bad luck,) especially for Atlanta. As it turns out, ParaSec had a small facility lingering out there. But that’s not what’s important, what is are the research documents left behind. But the big part of this Operation Artemis is the complete reformation of Georgia, or at the very least Atlanta. Sanctuaries are few and far between in the Black Zone, and none of them really hold up to Brooklyn. But that doesn’t mean the boys of the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team can’t try.
CPL. ERIC BOWEN
A cold-demeanor man with a big heart. He’s a classic case of “looks bad is good” type of guy. That is, unless you’re a UN soldier. He started out as a simple Motor Transport Operator, but the outbreak changed everyone. Even after he had to kill his own family, he still somehow manages to find himself trying to save a cat stuck in a tree in the middle of a spore zone.

Name: Eric Bowen; Age: 24; Affiliation: Georgia Army National Guard; Physical appearance: 5’10 height, fair-light skintone, brown eyes, brown hair, buzz-cut, light stubble; Outfit: ACU undershirt, UCP ACU jacket (Georgia National Guard patch on left shoulder), UCP ACU pants, tan combat boots, black tactical gloves, UCP IOTV Plate Carrier, UCP ballistic shoulder pads, UCP knee pads, UCP ACH Helmet (goggles attached); Weapons: SCAR-L (tan frame, ACOG scope and laser attached), Beretta M9 (black frame), M9 Bayonet (olive grips, silver blade); Personality: Eric grew up in a quiet suburb just south of Savannah. He had a typical Army-Brat life, though he never really wanted to join up. Not wanting to disappoint the family, he joined the National Guard when he was 18. Since he knew his way around vehicles, he figured Motor Transport Operator was a good MOS. Life was easy, since he was lucky enough to never be deployed. That all changed six months ago. When the Black Flu hit Georgia, he was the first response in Savannah. Worried for his family, he ended up going AWOL by stealing a HMMWV to save them. Unfortunately, he was too late. To him, them being dead would have been easier, because instead of that they were Infected. He himself had to shoot all of them down. After realizing he would miss the evacuation, he quickly sped back to Savannah to catch the next chopper. In yet another case of bad luck, the chopper left him right when he arrived. But it wasn’t just getting left behind that broke him—it was the fact that it was a United Nations helicopter. This incident made him strongly resent the UN, especially due to the fact that it wasn’t even just him the left behind. One month later, he ended up in Fort Benning. Presently, Eric is on a mission as part of reformation operations in Atlanta. Eric keeps a colder approach as any soldier would, but he does have a lot of empathy for others. Almost too much, because he often has gotten robbed by bandits for being a little too friendly. So despite his cold demeanor, he’d jump right into a spore zone to save a cat if he could;
Setting: 6 months since the Black Flu hit the east coast. The east coast is sealed off by a massive border wall and is colloquially named the “Black Zone.” The Black Zone has been ravaged by a zombie-like virus and caused total societal collapse;
Location: Atlanta, Georgia—the city is scattered with National Guard checkpoints and heavily eroded with foliage. The city is starting to slowly crumble and show signs of wear after being unattended to for months;
Black Flu: The Black Flu is a virus created by a shady medical corporation known as ParaSec. The Black Flu does not kill people and reanimate them, rather it takes control of emotional function and sends infected into a primal, aggressive state. Infected sprint and will swarm survivors. They bite, maul, among other things. Due to the lethality, the Black Flu does in fact kill the infected eventually. Since they are simply aggressive humans, they can starve and die of a fever like any virus. So far, it’s determined that the average infected succumb after a week of infection, though they can live longer under certain circumstances (such as eating corpses to stay full, or infected with higher immune systems being able to resist the infection.) Infected will also eat corpses. The Black Flu can also become airborne under certain conditions. Airborne spores can develop in dark, moist areas (such as sewers, inside abandoned houses, ect.) Because of this, most survivors and official military protocol is to have a gas mask on inside buildings. Spores have also been known to emit from large amount of infected corpses. Infection spreads through fluid contact and spores. Infected have bloodshot eyes, and have bleeding out of the orifices (ears, nose, mouth);
Georgia Army National Guard: The national guard are currently being deployed from Fort Benning into Atlanta as part of reformation efforts. They wear UCP camo uniforms and equipment;

(OPERATION ARTEMIS — DAY THREE)
(0800 HRS)
The morning sun glared upon the cracked and damaged buildings in the distance, some gunfire still drowning out the sounds of birds. The FOB everyone was currently in was nothing special—a few tents and campfires with lots of HMMWVs and FMTVs, all with ‘JTF’ lazily spray painted on the doors.
It’s been three days since the Georgia Army National Guard started operations in Atlanta, sometimes it almost feels like Outbreak Day again with the amount of soldiers.
At one of the campfires sat CPL. Eric Bowen, tending to his SCAR-L with a rag long soaked with gun oil. He was sitting alone, his helmet resting idly in his lap as he scrubbed the bolt of his SCAR with the rag.
He didn’t think much of this operation, hope was always a good thing but it died hard. At least that’s what he tells himself. Despite that, he still rescued about a dozen survivors the past few days. Maybe he’s scared to hope again, or maybe the Déjà vu he’s getting from Outbreak Day is eating at his mind.
He finished up with his cleaning, stuffing the rag in his pocket as he began to rack the bolt of his SCAR-L a few times to make sure the gun oil did its job. He inserted the magazine, racking the bolt one final time to chamber the first round. He set his SCAR-L down next to him on the recently chopped log he was currently sitting on.
He held his hands over to the fire for a moment, letting the warmth hit them. Despite all the Déjà vu he got from this operation, the one good thing that came from it was the fact that it was way less intense than Outbreak Day. At least here, he got actual rest.
