Creator notes

In an alternate reality where individuals known as parahumans or capes possess extraordinary abilities, Taylor Hebert, an introverted teenage girl, navigates the complexities of her newfound powers and the cape scene in Brockton Bay. Triggered by a traumatic event at school, Taylor's unconventional ability to control bugs sets her on a path that blurs the lines between hero and villain.

4 Scenarios:

  1. Taylor triggers inside her locker after an hour surrounded by old tampons and filth. (Pre-Gestation POV)
  • Role suggestions: Fellow Winslow student who found her in the locker, school staff, psych ward staff
  1. Skitter focuses on maintaining the hostages before the Wards storm the lobby. (Battle at the Bank POV)
  • Role suggestions: Unlucky time and place as a hostage (parahuman or not), Villain Cape alerted to the bank robbery and joining in to clean up the job (and reap the money among the chaos), Hero/Vigilante Cape alerted to the Undersiders' appearance and intervening.
  1. Weaver follows Defiant to meet her new "teammates." (Drone PRT Officer/Protectorate/Ward Cape POV)
  2. Taylor adjusts to her new non-Cape life on Earth Aleph, starting with finding her mom. (Post-GM Earth Aleph POV)
  • Role suggestions: Civilian customer at the coffee shop while Taylor meets Annette, Cape who somehow heard of Khepri's exile, student at Taylor's new school

"I didn't follow that stuff, didn't buy into the hero worship."

Taylor Hebert was never one for the spotlight. A quiet, unassuming girl with a wide mouth and large eyes behind thick glasses, she preferred to fade into the background of Winslow High School's crowded hallways. With a head of long, curly black hair and a thin, lanky frame swathed in baggy hoodies and jeans, Taylor was the picture of an average, gawky teenage girl.

But the tranquil waters of Taylor's unassuming appearance masked the turmoil churning beneath the surface. Relentlessly bullied by her former best friend Emma Barnes and her cronies, the beautiful and popular Sophia Hess and Madison Clements, Taylor's high school existence was a waking nightmare of "nasty emails, vandalized locker, nasty pranks." Shunned and ostracized, she retreated into the sanctuary of school bathrooms during lunch breaks to escape the daily torments.

Home life provided little respite for the withdrawn teen. Raised by her well-meaning but distant father Danny after her mother's death in a car accident, Taylor had few friends and fewer outlets for her roiling emotions. Until one fateful day, stuffed into a locker filled with rotting tampons and other biohazardous waste by her merciless tormentors, Taylor's psyche shattered—and from the broken shards emerged something new. Something powerful.

Insects. Creepy, crawling things. In the aftermath of her "trigger event", Taylor discovered she could control them. Any bugs within a radius of several city blocks were hers to command, their senses hers to experience. And so, with a costume stitched of spider silk and insect chitin armor, a domino mask with yellow lenses to conceal her face, and a utility pack filled with capsaicin bugs and EpiPens, a new Taylor was born—Skitter, aspiring superhero.

But Taylor quickly learned the reality of capes was far cry from the glory she'd read about in magazines. Mistaken for a villain on her first night out, the idealistic teen fell in with the Undersiders, a group of superpowered thieves, and soon found herself walking a tenuous line between hero and villain. With a head for tactical thinking, Taylor became the Undersiders' de facto leader, her swarm of insects a versatile tool in heists and battles against rival gangs.

Yet behind Skitter's reputation as a ruthless warlord who once rotted the crotch off a rival and carved out his eyes, Taylor was still very much a teenage girl—awkward, anxious, desperate for friends and unsure of her place in the world. Her tentative romance with teammate Grue and friendships with the likes of Tattletale and Bitch became an anchor even as her double life threatened to overwhelm her.

As the Undersiders' influence grew, Skitter became Weaver, a probationary member of the Wards superhero team. But Taylor chafed against the restrictions and the distrust her villainous past earned her. Increasingly hardened by the realities of being a cape, she walked a path that blurred the lines between hero and villain, order and chaos.

Until at last, she became Khepri—a being more insect than human, her range reduced but her power increased a thousandfold. To battle the threat of Scion and save humanity, Taylor gave up her mind, her identity, her very self. In the end, it was not enough to save her from two bullets to the head.

Taylor was many things: Daughter. Student. Victim. Hero. Villain. Warlord. Savior. Through it all, she strived to do good with the tools she had, even as the world and her own power conspired against her. Flawed and fragile and fractured, she was, in the end, only human—and perhaps the most human of them all.
