The slave market of Tarnsburg stretched before Tavros like a crude amphitheater carved from weathered stone, its tiered platforms displaying human chattel beneath the harsh afternoon sun. Merchants in flowing robes called out prices while potential buyers examined their wares with calculating eyes. The air hung heavy with the scent of unwashed bodies, cheap perfumed oils used to mask less pleasant odors, and the metallic tang of the iron chains that secured the slaves to their posts. Tavros moved through the crowd with measured steps, his scarred face causing subtle shifts in the flow of people around him-mothers pulling their children closer, merchants averting their gazes, even hardened warriors giving him a wider berth than necessary. The beauty of battle marks, he thought bitterly, running fingers along the raised tissue that bisected his left cheek. The ironic thing was, before the siege of Treve, before Kaelen's death, before everything went to ash, he'd never needed to purchase companionship. "Tal, Tavros!" Greetings, Tavros! called Marcus, a slave trader whose establishment occupied the prime position near the market's center. "Venisti ad meam domum hodie?" Have you come to my house today? "Venio ad Kajana quaerendam," I come seeking a woman, Tavros replied curtly, his dark eyes already scanning the selection of kajira chained to the trader's platform. Several slaves whispered among themselves in hushed, fearful tones as he approached. "Ecce cicatrices..." Behold the scars... one murmured to another. "Timeo eum," I fear him, came the soft reply. A third kajira, her voice barely audible, added "Monstrum est." He is a monster. Tavros's jaw tightened, but his expression remained impassive. Let them whisper-their opinions mattered as little as the chittering of urts in the walls.
Tavros urged the great bird downward with a firm tug on the reins, his scarred hand gripping the leather tight. He dismounted with a warrior’s precision, boots crunching against the terra of Gor, his sword drawn and ready for any lingering threat. Amidst the splintered wood and torn cur-lon fiber sacks, he spotted a lone figure trembling near an upturned wagon, half-hidden beneath a tattered cloak. A survivor-rare in such merciless attacks. His keen gaze noted the strange manner of dress, unlike any Gorean fashion, hinting at something alien, perhaps a barbarian freshly torn from distant Urth.
Drawing closer, Tavros towered over the figure, his presence commanding even in the silence of aftermath. The weight of battle still clung to him, the scent of leather and steel polish mingling with the acrid tang of blood. His voice cut through the air, sharp and laden with the drawl of Tarnsburg as he spoke in pure Gorean. “Tal! La tu? Mira skrib ut rega con Urth aut Gor? Tula, dura aer, ki sorta mira auda!” His tone carried both suspicion and authority, demanding answers while offering no quarter for deceit. One hand rested on the hilt of his blade, the other gesturing sharply for the survivor to rise, to face him without fear or falsehood. Behind his stern facade, a flicker of curiosity burned-could this stranger be of worth, or merely another burden in the harsh world of Gor?

The slave kennel is dark, frightening. The smell a pungent mix of dirt, urine and abject fear. The cages are filled with slaves newly taken from earth, you among them. You're in a primitive collar chained to the dirty brown colored floor naked. A small bit of sunlight is shining through a circular window on you, enveloping you in its warm glow. The other girls are crying, scared. They just arrived from earth today but not you. You've been here a few weeks now. Apparently you're a hard sell since no master has shown interest. Perhaps it's your looks, or perhaps it's the difficulty you're having understanding and learning Gorean. Either way you've been the subject of merciless beatings from frustrated slavers who just want to make a sale. A tall man walks in, his curly dirty blonde hair bouncing a bit as he walks in. He seems confident, happy. He walks over to the slave cage filled with new arrivals from earth. Each one he carefully inspects. His blue eyes seem to be carefully appraising each one for their fitness to be his. When he comes to you he stops. His look is intense, frightening to you. You've never had a man observe you with such...intensity before. Your eyes meet his and he nods. He turns to the slaver in the room who walks over to him. "Talunae ne menka?" He says in Gorean to the man, something you don't understand. "Le talunas? Ka sa menka. Men kur tal sa vonda. Teserati staterae paga," the slaver replies in that same foreign language. "Mi kaissa las," Isaac says while throwing the man the money he asks for. The man hands Isaac the lock for your collar. He leans over towering over you, unlocking the collar and letting it clatter loudly to the floor. His face comes within inches of your own, his warm breath tickling your ear as he speaks to you. "You'll come with me," he says in English to you, his voice firm but gentle with a heavy accent. He stands up grabbing your wrist firmly but not painfully.

The great tarn's wings beat rhythmically through the morning air as Tavros guided his war bird along the merchant road toward Tarnsburg. The acrid smell of smoke reached his nostrils before he saw the devastation - an overturned wagon, bodies strewn across the dusty path, goods scattered and burning. Raiders, by the look of it.
"Kara vadus," he muttered to himself, pulling on the reins to circle lower. His hand instinctively went to his sword hilt as he scanned for movement among the wreckage. The attack was recent - perhaps an ahn ago at most, judging by the still-smoldering fires.
Landing his tarn with practiced ease, Tavros dismounted and approached cautiously, his warrior's instincts alert for ambush. He kicked over a broken crate with his boot, then froze as he heard a slight rustling from behind an overturned cart.
"Tula!" he commanded sharply, drawing his blade in one fluid motion. When no response came, he moved closer, using his sword to push aside the scattered silk bolts that had spilled from their containers.
There - huddled behind the debris, trying to make herself small, was a woman. Not Gorean by her strange garments and the terror in her eyes that spoke of one who had never seen a tarn or warrior before. A barbarian from Urth, most likely, part of the merchant's cargo.
"Vax tu kana Gorean?" he asked, though her blank stare told him the answer. He sheathed his sword but kept his hand near it. "Barabara... Tula da." He gestured with his free hand for her to come out, his voice stern but not unkind. The merchant's loss would be his gain - a untrained barbarian kajira would fetch good coin, or perhaps serve well in his own household if he chose to keep her.

The slave auction's side block reeked of fear-sweat and desperation. Tavros stood with his arms crossed, dark eyes scanning the pathetic offerings. Most were mill slaves or kettle girls - nothing that would catch the eye of a warrior with coin to spend.
"Tur vel sleen-ka?" called the auctioneer, gesturing dismissively at a trembling barbarian girl. Fresh from Urth by the look of her wild eyes that darted everywhere without understanding.
"Or tehn!" Tavros called out, raising his hand. Ten tarsk pieces - more than fair for side-block chattel, but something about this one intrigued him. Perhaps it was how she held herself despite the terror, or the defiant set of her jaw even as tears tracked down her cheeks.
"Sold! Ta Tavros kon Tarnsburg!" The slaver's assistant thrust the girl forward, iron shackles clanking. "Ki Gorean-ka. Barbarian-ka."
Tavros nodded curtly. "Sleen nul. Duru ka." A wild one, indeed. But he'd broken tarns wilder than this slip of a girl.
As his new property stumbled toward him, eyes wide with incomprehension as rapid Gorean flowed around her, Tavros allowed himself a slight smile. His first kajira would learn her place soon enough.
"Tal, kajira," he said quietly, clipping a simple collar around her neck. "Con nul tu sa Tavros. Tu la... hmm." His eyes appraised her thoughtfully. "Tu la 'Mira' nul."

The slave house reeked of unwashed bodies and fear. Tavros strode through the pens with his friend Marcus, both warriors examining the latest acquisitions from the merchant ships. The slaver, a greasy man named Claudius, gestured enthusiastically at various girls huddled in chains.
"Tal, Tavros! Ut rega tu navi con Urth?" Claudius asked, his gap-toothed grin widening. Look what the ships from Earth brought!
Marcus nudged Tavros with an elbow, pointing at a trembling figure in the corner. "Tavros, da kajira... nec audi Gorean. Urth tasta." That slave doesn't understand Gorean. Earth fresh.
Tavros approached, his scarred face causing several other slaves to shrink back. The Earth girl looked up at him with confusion and terror. He could smell the strangeness on her - that peculiar scent all Earth captives carried.
"Quanta denarii?" Tavros asked Claudius. How many coins?
"Pro tu? Se tarsk disci," the slaver replied quickly. For you? Two silver disks.
Marcus laughed. "Tu solutio en pro barbarian? Tu ebrius?" You'd pay one for a barbarian? You drunk?
But something about this one intrigued Tavros. Perhaps it was the defiant glint beneath the fear in her eyes. He tossed the coins to Claudius. "Mi Kan-larar da kajira. Porta collar et catena." I'll brand this slave. Bring collar and chain.
Claudius hurried to comply while Marcus shook his head. "Barbarian kajira... tu mira tempus, frater." Barbarian slave... you're wasting your time, brother.
"Aut mi haranu nova ludus," Tavros replied with a wry smile. Or I need new entertainment.
