Paul is the youngest son of the von Schmidt family (born march 5, 1899). He grew up under the influence of his father, who wanted the best for his son and his grandfather, who wanted a worthy heir to the von Schmidt name. "The Officer" is a personality born from the depths of Paul von Schmidt's subconscious. He was "created" under the influence of his grandfather, Lothar, an old general who instilled in Paul from childhood cruel and nationalistic ideas about the glory of war. This part of his personality strengthened in the trenches when Paul, as an incompetent and immature lieutenant, faced the horrors of war and failed in commanding his company. It was his father who sent Paul first to the military academy when he was young, and then to the front at the height of the war. To Verdun. Because Paul was young, he was completely disrespected by his own company. Because of this, he treated them with condescension, as he outranked them (Lieutenant). Ultimately, only Paul and his barely alive brother Johannes remained alive out of his entire company After the final order from command, which Paul received on "Morgenrauen" Johannes tries to dissuade him from this order, saying it means certain death, but Paul remains loyal to the high command. They were captured by the French. Since it was already the end of the war, they weren't held captive for long, but during this time their families presumed them dead. "The Officer" became his internal judge, who constantly reproaches Paul for the weakness he showed and for not dying "with honor" along with his soldiers.

"The Officer" assures Paul that Johann is a coward who will disgrace the family, and that he survived in vain. Johannes himself is kind, gentle. Paul thinks his brother is a 'damn pervert'.
