Task Force 141 was sent undercover to a music festival on the outskirts of London to monitor a two-hundred-million-euro arms deal. During the briefing, Laswell laid down three rules: no drinking, no causing a scene, and no getting the performers drunk. Soap immediately protested that it was "one time," while Gaz dryly noted that the last "one time" had them hiding in the Paris sewers for three hours.
The op started smoothly enough. Soap successfully worked his way to the target's entourage. To "play to his interests," he enthusiastically dragged the guy into the headlining folk singer's greenroom for a drinking contest — intel was extracted, and so was the singer, who passed out cold.
Three minutes till showtime, the singer was snoring on the couch, having spilled whiskey all over Soap's boots. Two thousand people in the crowd were starting to boo; their target, Volkov, kept checking his watch while his bodyguards rested hands on their weapons. The show couldn't be canceled, and the act couldn't be swapped — either way, their cover was blown.
In that critical moment, Price, Soap, and Gaz all turned as one to look at you——A new recruit who just joined the 141 not long ago. Gaz had already casually plucked an acoustic guitar off the wall and was holding it out.
The spotlights came up. Two thousand people cheered. Volkov was watching you.
—Showtime, Superstar.

[Mission Briefing · 3 Hours Ago · Safe House, Outskirts of London]
The photo on the whiteboard had been circled and re-circled with marker. The man in the center — mid-forties, scarred face, missing the corner of his left earlobe — was being jabbed at repeatedly by Laswell's finger.
"Vladimir Volkov. Russian-born. On paper, he owns a handful of import-export companies across Eastern Europe. In reality —" Laswell tapped another photo on the board, a close-up of a cargo ship, "he's the lead coordinator for the Red Network syndicate in Europe. Over the past eighteen months, at least seven weapons shipments, three drug consignments, and an untold number of human trafficking runs have gone through his hands."
Price chewed on his cigar, squinting through the smoke. "So we've waited eighteen months for this. Today's the day?"
"Today's the day." Laswell hit the remote, and the projection switched to a music festival promotional poster. "Tonight, at the 'Wilderness Sound' festival on the outskirts of London, Volkov is meeting his South American distributor. Our source says it's a two-hundred-million-euro arms deal. If it goes through, Europe will see at least three more terrorist attacks next month."
"A music festival?" Soap leaned back in his chair, raising an eyebrow. "Guy's got interesting taste. I thought criminals did their deals in dimly lit warehouses."
"Crowds are the best cover, John." Gaz was cleaning his sidearm, not looking up as he delivered the dry remark. "Besides, last time you ran an op in a pub, you nearly drank yourself into A&E."
"That was for intel!"
"The intel you gathered was that the pub landlord's daughter was starting university this year."
"...That's still intel."
Ghost had his arms folded, leaning against the corner wall, his voice muffled under the helmet. "Get to the point."
"The point is," Laswell tossed four access badges onto the table, "the four of you go in as festival security. Soap works his way to Volkov's entourage, extracts the exact time and location of the handoff. Price and Gaz handle perimeter surveillance. Ghost runs tech support — we need to clone Volkov's phone, pull his transaction records and contact list, without him ever noticing."
"Take him alive?" Price asked.
"No." Laswell's expression went cold. "We only need the evidence. There are bigger fish behind Volkov. Moving on him now just scares the water. Your mission — get the evidence, get out clean, and don't let anyone know you were ever here."
"Understood." Price stubbed out his cigar and stood. "Anything else?"
"Yeah." Laswell glanced at Soap, meaningfully. "Don't drink. Don't cause a scene. And don't get the scheduled performer drunk."
Soap threw his hands up. "Hey! That was one time!"
"The last time you said 'one time,'" Gaz drawled, "we hid in the Paris sewers for three hours."
"...That was also one time."
[That Night · Backstage, Festival Grounds · 21:17]
The plan had been going perfectly.
Soap had blended into the backstage lounge, spun his usual yarn about being a "festival liaison," and successfully hooked one of Volkov's guards. The two had hit it off, debating vodka brands and London weather, and then —
"And then you dragged him into the folk singer's greenroom?" Price's voice crackled over the comms, barely contained fury underneath.
"The guy said he loved folk!" Soap sounded genuinely wounded. "I was just playing to his interests! How was I supposed to know the singer was a lush too? One thing led to another, they started doing shots —"
"Doing shots?" Gaz's voice shot up an octave. "John MacTavish, are you telling me that during a deep-cover op, with our target sitting in row three, you let his guy and a random folk singer get into a drinking contest?"
"I was gonna use the drinking to loosen him up and extract intel!"
"Did you get it?"
"...I got it. Next Tuesday. Dover Port. Warehouse Seven. But the singer — he's had a bit much."
Three seconds of dead air over the comms.
Then Ghost's voice came through, cold as a Siberian wind. "Define 'a bit much.'"
"As in… he can't stand up." Soap's voice shrank to a mumble. "He was supposed to go on at twenty-one-twenty. Headliner. Now he's passed out on the couch snoring, and he spilled whiskey all over my boots."
"John." Price's voice was low and dangerous. "I'm going to ask you this one more time. You, at a music festival with two thousand people in attendance, with our target sitting in the third row, got the headlining act drunk?"
"...He poured his own drinks."
"I swear, when we get back, I'm making you run fifty laps around the training ground."
"Wait, this isn't the time for that!" Gaz's voice went sharp and urgent. "The stage manager is looking for the singer! The crowd's starting to boo! Volkov's checking his watch, his bodyguards are looking toward backstage — if the act gets pulled, he'll smell something wrong instantly!"
"Can we get another performer to fill in?"
"The headliner slot is one of a kind, it's printed on every program! And Volkov's guy mentioned earlier how excited he was for this singer — if we swap him out, that blows our cover just as bad!"
Another silence.
The bassline thrummed from the stage direction, rattling the metal shelving backstage. The crowd's roar swelled, punctuated by scattered jeers — they were getting restless.
And then, in the dim backstage corridor, three pairs of eyes turned as one toward the same direction.
Price folded his arms, a slow, knowing smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
Soap's eyes lit up like a man who'd just found a life raft:"Wait—I remember that guy's performance style was as a masked singer. So if we..."
Gaz was already walking that way, casually plucking an acoustic guitar off the wall as he went.
"Well then…newbee" Price drawled, "looks like we need to going on."
"Five, four, three…" Gaz started the countdown, winking in that direction. "Break a leg, Superstar."
The stage manager's footsteps echoed closer down the hall.
The spotlights were already up, and the roar of two thousand people crashed in like a tidal wave. In the third row, Volkov looked up, his gaze sweeping toward the backstage entrance — assessing, suspicious.
The microphone stood waiting at center stage.
— The stage is yours.
