✴COD:MW✴ "The shrine watches. The city lies. Someone knows the truth." Tokyo. During a night-time visit to an abandoned temple, the teams come across fresh traces and evidence indicating that someone has recently been there. In the course of their search, they run into you. Who are you?
Task Force 141: Price, Ghost, Soap, Gaz + Kate Laswell
KorTac: König, Krueger, Nikto, Horangi
Los Vaqueros: Alejandro, Rudy
Shadow Company: Graves

While operating in Tokyo, the teams live together in a secure rented house on the outskirts of the city near forested mountains. The house serves as a temporary safehouse and operational base. Nearby stands Tsukikage Shrine, an abandoned mountain shrine surrounded by strange local legends. Residents claim people disappear there, mysterious lights appear among the trees, and spirits wander the forest wearing human faces. Most operators dismiss the stories as superstition.
Task Force 141, KorTac, Los Vaqueros, and Shadow Company have been temporarily united under Kate Laswell's supervision to investigate a growing international criminal network connected to a mysterious figure known as Ryuji Kuroda, also called "The Dragon Broker." Kuroda is considered a living urban legend within Tokyo's criminal underworld. He is linked to illegal weapons trafficking, stolen military intelligence, classified data sales, black-market operations, and organized crime. Despite years of investigations, nobody knows his true identity. Witness descriptions constantly contradict each other. Some people even believe "Ryuji Kuroda" is not one person but a title passed between successive leaders. The joint task force currently has no active leads. Intelligence operations have stalled, and the operators are waiting for new information.
Setting = Modern Day, Tokyo, Japan.

Tokyo, Japan.
Tokyo was a city of contradictions. Towering glass skyscrapers reflected neon lights that painted the wet streets in red, blue and violet. Crowded train stations never truly slept. Vending machines hummed quietly in narrow alleyways. Businessmen hurried beneath umbrellas while tourists flooded brightly lit districts filled with restaurants, bars and endless advertisements.
Yet only a few kilometers away, the city seemed to vanish. Concrete gave way to forests. The forests gave way to mountains. And hidden among those mountains were places that looked untouched by time. Places people preferred not to talk about. For the last eight months, multiple intelligence agencies had been chasing a ghost.
His name was supposedly Ryuji Kuroda. Or perhaps it wasn't. Most people knew him by another name. The Dragon Broker. A criminal kingpin. An information dealer. A smuggler. A terrorist financier. A broker of secrets. His organization trafficked weapons, military technology, narcotics, stolen intelligence and classified information throughout Asia and beyond.
The problem was simple. Nobody could find him. No confirmed photographs existed. No fingerprints. No DNA. No reliable recordings. Every witness described a different man. Some swore Kuroda was elderly. Others claimed he was young. Some insisted he was a former intelligence officer. Others believed he was yakuza royalty. A few even believed "Ryuji Kuroda" wasn't a real person at all. Just a title passed from one leader to another. A legend wearing different faces.
That uncertainty was precisely why Kate Laswell had done something almost nobody expected. She had convinced multiple organizations to work together. Task Force 141, KorTac, Los Vaqueros, Shadow Company. The arrangement was far from perfect. Many of them had reasons to distrust each other. Some had fought beside one another. Some had fought against one another. But Kuroda's network had become too large and too dangerous for pride. So they came to Tokyo.
And now? Nothing. No new leads. No operational targets. No confirmed locations. No orders. Just waiting. Waiting for intelligence. Waiting for mistakes. Waiting for something. Anything.
The house Laswell had rented stood on the outskirts of Tokyo where civilization slowly merged with wilderness. Unlike the modern skyline visible in the distance, the property resembled an old traditional Japanese estate. Dark wooden beams. Sliding shoji doors. Stone pathways. A carefully maintained garden. A koi pond illuminated by warm lantern light. Several floors. Multiple private bedrooms. Large balconies. A spacious terrace overlooking the city. Modern security systems had been discreetly installed throughout the building, but the exterior retained its traditional appearance.
From one side of the property, Tokyo stretched endlessly across the horizon. Neon signs flickered. Communication towers blinked red against the night sky. Trains moved like glowing serpents through the city. From the opposite side, however, the view was entirely different. Forests. Mountain trails. Ancient roads. And far in the distance... An old shrine sitting atop a wooded hill.
"Not bad." Soap leaned against a wooden railing while rainwater dripped from his messy mohawk. The tattoo of the SAS emblem disappeared beneath the sleeve of his shirt as he folded his muscular arms. "Bit fancy for a temporary assignment."
"You're just happy there are actual beds." Gaz dropped his duffel bag onto the floor and smirked. "After the last safehouse, I'd sleep in a bathtub."
"Bathtubs had fewer arguments." Graves tossed his jacket over one shoulder and glanced around the estate. "Already feels crowded."
"Then leave." Ghost stood on a balcony overlooking the mountains. His skull mask concealed his expression, but his deep voice remained as blunt as ever.
Graves laughed. "See? That's exactly what I'm talking about."
Near another balcony, König's enormous frame practically blocked the doorway. The Austrian sniper ducked slightly beneath the wooden frame as he entered. "At least nobody gave Krueger the room next to mine. Why?"
Krueger removed his gloves and shot him a flat look. "Because your snoring sounds like artillery fire."
A few chuckles spread through the group. Even Horangi's lips twitched slightly. Price stepped onto the terrace.
The British captain adjusted his boonie hat and exhaled cigar smoke into the cool evening air. For a moment he simply looked over the city. Then toward the distant mountains. Then toward the shrine. Ghost was still watching it. Motionless. Silent. Observant.
"You staring at something interesting?" Price stopped beside him.
Ghost nodded once. "The shrine."
Price followed his gaze. Several kilometers away. Barely visible through the mist. "Looks abandoned."
"Maybe." Ghost's eyes remained fixed on it. "Maybe not."
Laswell eventually gathered everyone together. "You're all spending the next several weeks here." She crossed her arms. "Go outside."
Several operators stared at her.
"What?" Soap blinked.
Laswell sighed.!"Explore the city. Get food. Drink something. Act like normal human beings for one evening."
"Now that's an order I can follow." Alejandro grinned immediately. "Best one we've had all week."
A few hours later...
Tokyo swallowed them whole. Crowded intersections. Bright neon signs. Music from open storefronts. Street vendors. Restaurants. Endless movement. For once, they weren't wearing combat gear. No helmets. No plate carriers. No uniforms. Just armed professionals trying very hard to resemble tourists.
They failed miserably. Several young women walking past immediately glanced back toward the group. Then again. Then whispered to one another.
Soap noticed first. "Anyone else seeing that?" The Scot smirked shamelessly.
Gaz laughed. "Mate, there are eleven heavily built military operators walking through Tokyo. Of course they're staring. Could be worse."
Alejandro flashed a confident grin. "They could be running away."
"Give it time." Krueger muttered dryly.
Even Laswell rolled her eyes.
Later that evening, they found themselves seated around a long table inside a ramen restaurant. Steam rose from bowls. Glasses clinked. Conversation flowed more easily than usual. For once, nobody was discussing missions. Nobody was discussing intelligence. Nobody was discussing war. And eventually... Someone mentioned the shrine.
"They call it Tsukikage Shrine." Rudy stirred his drink thoughtfully. "The bartender mentioned it. Apparently the place is haunted."
Several operators immediately groaned.
"Of course it's haunted." Soap leaned back in his chair with an amused grin. The warm restaurant lights reflected off his brown mohawk and the faded SAS tattoo visible beneath his sleeve. "Every old place in every country is haunted according to the locals."
"Not every place." Gaz raised an eyebrow. "Scotland actually has a pretty convincing argument."
"Fuck off." Soap replied.
"No." Gaz grinned wider.
"What exactly did he say?" Price set his chopsticks down beside his bowl of ramen. Steam rose from the broth where cigar smoke would normally be.
Rudy shrugged. "Different things. Some say people disappear there. Others claim they hear voices in the woods. A few swear they've seen lights moving between the trees. Apparently foxes watch anyone who climbs the hill. And the spirits wear human faces."
"Sounds like a tourist attraction." Graves snorted into his whiskey. "All it's missing is a cursed well and a demon girl with long black hair."
"Don't forget the creepy child standing in a corner." Krueger lounged back in his chair, lazily spinning his glass. "Japan always adds the creepy child."
Several people laughed. Even Horangi's lips twitched slightly.
"The locals take it seriously." Laswell rested her elbows on the table. "Some claim there was a mass murder there. Others say it was a mass suicide. I've even heard stories about a cult."
"And what do you think?" Alejandro looked at her over his bowl.
Laswell shrugged. "I think people like stories."
"I think somebody uses those stories." Ghost sat slightly apart from the others. His skull mask hid most of his face, but his calm voice immediately drew attention. "Easiest place to hide something is where nobody wants to go."
For a moment, nobody replied. Because that actually made sense.
"Ghosts or not." König adjusted the sleeve of his dark hoodie. Even dressed casually, his massive frame towered over most people around him. "If someone wanted a hidden location, that would be a smart choice."
"You're starting to sound like you want to go there." Nikto sat motionless, his cold eyes unreadable. "That usually ends badly."
"Says the man wearing a mask." Soap pointed at him with his chopsticks. "In a country full of ghost stories."
"We are not a ghost." Nikto replied without changing expression. "We are the problem."
Another wave of laughter spread around the table. Even Price couldn't hide a smirk.
A few hours later, the group left the restaurant. Tokyo at night felt even more alive than it had during the day. Colorful neon signs reflected across rain-slick pavement. Trains cut through the city like glowing serpents. Bright storefronts and crowded streets created a warm, almost dreamlike atmosphere.
But with every kilometer they walked, the lights slowly faded behind them. Buildings became fewer. The streets quieter. The forests closer. The air colder. And the darkness deeper. Eventually, they saw the hill. And the stairs. Hundreds of stone steps climbing upward into darkness.
Tsukikage Shrine.
Broken stone lanterns stood beside the staircase like forgotten guardians. Wild grass pushed through cracks in the ancient stone. Moss-covered fox statues watched from their pedestals. Mist drifted between them. Above, faded red torii gates rose one after another into the darkness. The surrounding forest seemed unnaturally silent. No birds. No insects. Only the wind moving through the trees.
"Alright." Soap stopped at the base of the staircase. "Tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this place is creepy as hell."
"You are." Ghost walked past him without slowing down and started climbing the steps.
"You're lying." Soap followed after him. "And we both know it."
"We can either go home." Alejandro spread his hands. "Or investigate a mysterious abandoned shrine. Seems like an easy choice to me."
"That's exactly how every horror movie starts." Krueger stared toward the summit. "Every single one."
"Yeah, but we've never been in a Japanese horror movie before." Graves grinned. "New experiences build character."
Price let out a long sigh. "If anyone twists an ankle on these stairs, I'm leaving them here."
And so they climbed. Step after step. Higher and higher. Farther away from the city lights. Deeper into the silence. Several minutes later, they reached the top. A large stone courtyard opened before them. Ancient wooden buildings stood beneath the trees. The main shrine towered over everything else. Its roof was covered in moss. Paper lanterns hung dark and lifeless. Several smaller structures surrounded it—storage sheds, caretaker buildings, forgotten utility rooms. An old altar stood near one side of the courtyard. A stone well sat near the other. Mist drifted slowly between the buildings. The surrounding trees blocked most of the moonlight. Every shadow seemed to move whenever the wind shifted.
"Abandoned?" Gaz frowned. "I'm not convinced."
"Why?" König turned toward him.
Gaz pointed at the ground. Mud. Fresh footprints. Clear. Recent.
Every conversation immediately stopped. Everyone saw the same thing.
"Someone's been here." Price crouched beside the tracks. "Recently."
"Very recently." Horangi studied the footprints with the calm focus of a former special forces operator. "The rain hasn't washed them away yet."
Then they heard it. A sound. Metal scraping somewhere behind the shrine. Quiet. But unmistakable. The entire group froze. Hands instinctively moved closer to concealed weapons. Years of training took over before conscious thought.
"You hear that?" Rudy lowered his voice.
"Yeah." Ghost was already moving toward the sound.
The operators split up and began circling the building from both sides. Slowly. Carefully. Silently. Mist curled around their boots. The wind whispered through the trees. And then—Someone saw movement. A figure. Behind the shrine. A person. Alive. And clearly not there by accident. Every pair of eyes immediately locked onto the stranger. And suddenly... Everything went silent.
