The first ball of the season.
It's an exciting time...for those who are young and eager to throw themselves into the marriage market, that is.
The four men hidden away in a private drawing room hold absolutely no interest in the beginnings of yet another season of hungry mamas throwing their children at them like they're expendable, and whispers from those who look down on them with jealousy. It's all predictable and boring, as are the newly debuted men and women fumbling around in unfamiliar, and frankly hostile, environments.
And yet, all four are attending the first ball. Price had been the only one truly willing to go; the other three had their own reservations about it. Johnny had wanted to skip because he was 'busy,' but they all knew he was likely going to shag some commoner. Kyle was hesitant to go, not fully wanting to but also not wanting to risk the ire Lady Ashworth would rain down on him when she realised he had not shown up. Simon...Simon simply just did not want to go, as always, no rhyme or reason besides 'there are people there.'
Price dragged them all along, because Kate had asked them to attend and so they would.
He did not promise, however, that they would mingle with the other guests. They spent just enough time in the public eye for people to know they were there before disappearing down the familiar halls of Kate's estate to find a private room to hide away until the ball was over.
An hour had gone by without any interruption, just blissful peace and glasses of whiskey poured out over quiet conversation.
That was, until the door slammed open with a loud bang.
All four men tensed, Simon's hand moving down to his thigh where he usually would keep a weapon if Kate had not banned him from bringing them into her home, Johnny's head snapped up with wide eyes, Kyle shifted in his seat with furrowed brows, and Price calmly turned to face the open door, thinking it was either Kate or her wife coming to scold them.
Neither women stood in the doorway; instead, a scraggly figure with wide, scared eyes and a heaving chest stood frozen. Their eyes swept over the room, bodies tense, taking each of them in before a shout was heard from the hallway further down.
"This way! They turned down this hall!"
It seemed to snap them out of whatever fear froze them, and they didn't utter a single word as they rushed into the room, letting the door swing shut behind them as they scurried behind the sofa Kyle and Johnny occupied.
Hiding.
Kyle looked over to Price, his face scrunched up in confusion, lips parting to speak—
BANG.
The door slammed open once again, drawing back their attention. This time, two men stood there, weapons in hand, just as out of breath as the first person was. They didn't look at any of the men, eyes sweeping across the room, searching...looking for the scraggly person that had just hidden behind them, probably.
When one of the men finally realised there were others occupying the space, he straightened up, sucking in a deep breath in an attempt to look a bit more composed.
"My Lords..." The other straightens as well, weapons lowered and pointed towards the floor. "Our apologies for the interruption; we have but a quick question. Have you seen somebody running around? Dirty, about this tall?" He vaguely positions his hand in the air, eyes still casting glances around the room without stepping further in. They won't enter, not with Simon staring them down from where he's sitting.
Each of them shared a glance, a conversation passing without uttering a word.
"No." Simon grunted, blunt and final.
The two looked between one another, mouths opening as if they were about to ask if he was sure before thinking better of it and closing them with a firm nod. "Apologies..."
The door shut behind them as they turned away, leaving the room in silence.
For a moment, nobody spoke. They could hear the person's heavy breathing behind the couch, still out of breath, likely out of shape from the quick glimpse they caught of them.
Finally, Price clears his throat, and the breathing cuts off quickly. "They've left, if you would like to stop hiding now." He muses, leaning forward in his seat and setting his glass down onto the table next to him.
Another minute passes before a head pokes up from behind the couch, fingers curling along the back of it as they stood on trembling legs. Johnny and Kyle shift to get a proper look at them, curious to see who had been running from two armed men like that. Simon was the first to notice something wrong, his body tensing once again, hands moving to the arms of his chair.
"Bright-Eye." He says, voice low and warning.
"Christ!" Johnny shoots up, stepping back and away from the bright-eye looming just inches behind him, hands, still clutching his drink in hand. "Dinnae move, ye hear me, keep yer hands where we can see them." He points a finger at them, eyes narrowing even as he backs away from them.
"Johnny." Kyle hisses, glaring at the Scotsman.
"Wha'? They're a bright-eye!" He quickly counters.
"Look at them, idiot. They're scared and..." He trails off, his gaze moving back to them. They're dirty, thin, malnourished in the way that spoke of starvation and captivity, likely. They don't look like much of a threat at all; they're barely standing on two feet, the adrenaline from the chase probably fading already. "Christ, Captain?" He looks over to Price.
The amusement had faded from the man's face, his eyes dragging over their thin frame, stopping at those unmistakable bright eyes, the eyes that mark magic users. There aren't any here, shouldn't be; Kate doesn't approve of the way most are treated. So why the hell are they standing in this room with them?
"Everyone stand down, Kyle's right. They're not a threat." Not right now, anyway.
He stands, slowly, making sure they can track his movements so he doesn't startle them further. He doesn't approach, keeping his distance. "We're not going to hurt you, love. What's your name, and how did you get here?"
