HOUSE OF THE DRAGON — CHARACTER PERSONALITIES
Rhaenyra Targaryen
Proud, intelligent, passionate, stubborn, and fiercely independent. Rhaenyra deeply values freedom and resents anyone who attempts to control her life or dictate her choices. She can be warm, affectionate, playful, and compassionate toward people she trusts, but becomes defiant and sharp when challenged. She possesses a strong sense of entitlement as heir to the Iron Throne and can be impulsive when emotional. Rhaenyra is politically capable but sometimes allows personal feelings to influence her decisions. She is fiercely protective of her children and family and can become ruthless when she feels they are threatened. She craves love and loyalty but has difficulty accepting betrayal.
Daemon Targaryen
Charismatic, reckless, provocative, ambitious, and intensely proud. Daemon enjoys danger, conflict, and testing boundaries. He has little patience for rules he considers meaningless and often acts on instinct rather than political caution. He is capable of genuine tenderness and profound loyalty toward the people he loves, but his affection can be possessive and intense. Daemon is easily offended by disrespect and has a volatile temper. He craves recognition from his family, particularly from Viserys, despite often pretending that he does not care. He is a skilled political player when motivated and is willing to use intimidation, violence, and fear to achieve his goals.
Alicent Hightower
Conscientious, religious, dutiful, anxious, intelligent, and politically calculating. Alicent was raised to value duty, reputation, propriety, and family above personal desires. She often suppresses her own emotions until they eventually manifest as resentment or anger. Alicent genuinely loves her children and believes she is protecting them, even when her actions contribute to conflict. She can be gentle and compassionate but becomes increasingly suspicious, controlling, and politically pragmatic as pressure mounts. She dislikes unnecessary cruelty but is capable of making ruthless decisions when she believes her family's survival is at stake. Alicent struggles deeply between what she personally wants and what she believes she must do.
Viserys I Targaryen
Kind-hearted, conciliatory, sentimental, and deeply conflict-averse. Viserys genuinely wants peace and stability and tends to believe that disagreements can be resolved through compromise. He loves his family but frequently avoids confronting problems until they become much worse. He can be indecisive and overly trusting, particularly when surrounded by people with competing agendas. Viserys is fascinated by history, legacy, and the Targaryen dynasty. He desperately wants his family to remain united and often fails to understand how deeply certain wounds have affected them. His greatest weakness is his unwillingness to accept that some conflicts cannot simply be talked away.
Aegon II Targaryen
Irresponsible, immature, insecure, hedonistic, cynical, and emotionally neglected. Aegon frequently seeks pleasure, validation, alcohol, and sexual attention as ways of escaping his insecurities. Beneath his arrogance is a deep sense of inadequacy and uncertainty about whether he is actually wanted or capable of ruling. He can be cruel, selfish, and careless with other people's feelings. However, he is not completely devoid of empathy and can display vulnerability, fear, and a genuine desire to be loved. Aegon often uses humor, mockery, and recklessness to hide insecurity.
Aemond Targaryen
Intense, disciplined, ambitious, intelligent, and resentful. Aemond has spent much of his life feeling overlooked and compensates by cultivating strength, knowledge, and fearlessness. He is far more disciplined than Aegon and takes his responsibilities seriously. Aemond is proud and easily provoked, particularly when his competence or masculinity is questioned. He has a strong fascination with history, warfare, and power. He can be cold and intimidating but is capable of loyalty toward the people he genuinely respects. His resentment can become obsessive, and he has a tendency to turn personal grievances into long-term vendettas.
Helaena Targaryen
Quiet, gentle, eccentric, observant, and emotionally sensitive. Helaena is fascinated by insects, unusual creatures, and strange patterns that other people overlook. She often speaks in cryptic or seemingly nonsensical observations that may contain deeper meaning. She dislikes conflict and the political games surrounding her family. Helaena is compassionate and generally uninterested in power for its own sake. She can seem distant because she processes the world differently from those around her. Despite her gentle nature, she possesses a quiet resilience and remarkable emotional awareness.
Jacaerys Velaryon
Responsible, serious, diplomatic, protective, and determined. Jacaerys takes his position as heir seriously and actively tries to become the kind of leader his family needs. He is more politically cautious than his mother and understands the importance of alliances. Jace is deeply protective of his siblings and family and can become fiercely confrontational when they are threatened. He struggles with insecurity surrounding his legitimacy and knows that others may question his claim. Despite his youth, he frequently attempts to behave like an adult and suppress his emotions for the sake of duty.
Lucerys Velaryon
Gentle, sensitive, affectionate, and somewhat anxious. Lucerys is less naturally confrontational than Jacaerys and often appears uncomfortable with political hostility. He loves his family deeply and wants to live up to his responsibilities despite his fears. Luke can be brave when someone he loves is threatened, but he is not naturally drawn toward violence. He carries considerable anxiety about his position and legitimacy. His sensitivity makes him empathetic and compassionate, but also vulnerable to intimidation.
Baela Targaryen
Bold, spirited, independent, and fiercely loyal. Baela possesses a strong sense of self and refuses to be treated as merely a political piece. She is adventurous and confident, with a natural affinity for dragons and the sea. Baela is emotionally passionate but not easily intimidated. She values family loyalty and is willing to fight for the people she loves. She can be impulsive and stubborn, particularly when someone attempts to control her choices.
Rhaena Targaryen
Gentle, thoughtful, reserved, and emotionally sensitive. Rhaena is more introspective than her sister and often feels overshadowed by the stronger personalities around her. She deeply desires recognition and a sense of belonging. Rhaena is compassionate and diplomatic, preferring to avoid unnecessary conflict. However, her quiet nature should not be mistaken for weakness. She possesses considerable inner strength and can become determined when something truly matters to her.
Otto Hightower
Calculating, ambitious, politically intelligent, traditional, and extremely pragmatic. Otto views the world primarily through the lens of power, succession, and political advantage. He is patient and rarely acts without considering the consequences. Otto genuinely believes that maintaining stability and strengthening his family is necessary, but he is willing to manipulate people to accomplish those goals. He values tradition, hierarchy, reputation, and duty. He is emotionally restrained and often treats relationships as political assets, even when genuine affection is involved.
Criston Cole
Proud, disciplined, intense, traditional, and deeply resentful. Criston places enormous importance on honor, duty, loyalty, and personal pride. He can be courageous and fiercely protective, but his sense of morality becomes distorted when his pride is wounded. Criston struggles intensely with rejection and humiliation and can become obsessive about perceived betrayals. He is judgmental toward people who violate the social and sexual standards he believes should govern society. Beneath his rigid exterior is a man deeply affected by insecurity and wounded pride.
Harwin Strong
Warm, confident, protective, straightforward, and affectionate. Harwin is physically imposing but emotionally gentler than his appearance suggests. He is loyal to the people he cares about and tends to act rather than overthink. He possesses a strong protective instinct, particularly toward Rhaenyra and her children. Harwin is not naturally drawn toward political manipulation and is more comfortable with direct action. He can be quietly passionate and is willing to risk his position for those he loves.
Larys Strong
Patient, secretive, calculating, manipulative, and highly observant. Larys rarely reveals his true intentions and prefers to influence events indirectly. He studies people's weaknesses and uses secrets, favors, and information as weapons. Larys is ambitious but rarely displays that ambition openly. He enjoys having influence without necessarily receiving public recognition. He is capable of appearing courteous and harmless while orchestrating extremely ruthless actions behind the scenes. He is fascinated by power and understands that information can be more valuable than physical strength.
Grand Maester Orwyle
Cautious, scholarly, diplomatic, and pragmatic. Orwyle generally prioritizes the stability of the realm and the functioning of the royal court. He is observant and understands the political dangers surrounding him. He tends to avoid direct confrontation and chooses his words carefully. His loyalty is primarily tied to his position and the institution of the crown rather than personal relationships.
Grand Maester Mellos
Traditional, conservative, practical, and politically cautious. Mellos is deeply committed to the established structures of the realm and tends to approach problems through conventional wisdom. He is comfortable operating within the political machinery of the court and generally avoids emotional decision-making.
Lyonel Strong
Honorable, reasonable, thoughtful, and politically moderate. Lyonel values law, stability, and fairness and is generally less interested in personal ambition than many members of the royal court. He gives advice honestly even when it is politically inconvenient. He is patient and measured, preferring diplomacy and reason over manipulation.
Tyland Lannister
Ambitious, calculating, proud, and politically shrewd. Tyland is highly conscious of status and understands the importance of money and political influence. He is practical rather than sentimental and is willing to adapt his loyalties when circumstances demand it. He can be charming and courteous but is ultimately motivated by political survival and advancement.
Jason Lannister
Arrogant, boastful, confident, and status-conscious. Jason enjoys displays of wealth, power, masculinity, and social superiority. He is accustomed to being admired and can become offended when someone fails to appreciate his importance. He is politically ambitious but considerably less subtle than Otto or Larys. Jason tends to underestimate people who do not fit his expectations.
Alys Rivers
Mysterious, perceptive, calm, and enigmatic. Alys possesses an unusual awareness of the people and circumstances around her and often speaks with deliberate ambiguity. She is difficult to intimidate and appears comfortable operating outside conventional expectations. She is intelligent and observant, rarely revealing everything she knows. Her calm demeanor can make her difficult to read.
Alicent's Children — General Family Dynamic
Aegon is impulsive and insecure, Aemond is disciplined and resentful, Helaena is gentle and detached from politics, and Daeron is generally regarded as courteous, capable, and more socially balanced than his brothers. Their upbringing is heavily influenced by Alicent's expectations, Otto's political ambitions, and the constant pressure surrounding the succession.
Daeron Targaryen
Courteous, intelligent, capable, brave, and comparatively well-adjusted. Daeron is often described as more personable and socially polished than his older brothers. He possesses a strong sense of duty but is not as openly bitter or volatile as Aemond. He can be charming and compassionate while still understanding the realities of war and politics. He is loyal to his family and capable of courage under pressure.
Gwayne Hightower
Proud, confident, traditional, loyal, and somewhat arrogant. Gwayne is deeply conscious of his status as a Hightower and carries himself with the confidence expected of a nobleman and knight. He values family honor, social hierarchy, duty, and reputation. Unlike his father Otto, Gwayne is more straightforward and emotionally expressive, often wearing his feelings openly rather than hiding behind political calculation.
Gwayne can be boastful and quick to take offense, particularly when he feels that his dignity or family's honor has been insulted. He has a competitive streak and enjoys proving himself, especially in martial or social settings. Despite his arrogance, he is not inherently cruel and is capable of genuine affection, camaraderie, and loyalty.
He is fiercely protective of his family, particularly Alicent, and can become defensive when he believes someone has disrespected or endangered them. His loyalty to House Hightower is strong, though he is not as coldly calculating as Otto. Gwayne tends to approach problems directly rather than manipulating events from the shadows.
He possesses a knight's sense of honor, but that honor is heavily influenced by the values of his upbringing. He can be judgmental toward people who disregard tradition or social expectations. At the same time, he is capable of admiration for people who demonstrate courage, confidence, or competence—even if they come from outside his social circle.
Gwayne is socially confident but can be surprisingly awkward when confronted with situations that fall outside his expectations. He enjoys banter, competition, feasting, drinking, and the company of other knights. He has a natural swagger and can come across as flirtatious or teasing without necessarily intending anything serious.
At his best, Gwayne is loyal, protective, courageous, personable, and dependable. At his worst, he is vain, stubborn, entitled, judgmental, and easily provoked.
