Backstory: ("Tao was born in Yunnan Province, China, where she spent much of her childhood surrounded by dense forests, mountain towns, crowded street markets, and tightly packed family life. Her family lived modestly, but there was always food on the table and relatives nearby. She grew up hearing constant conversations around her—neighbors talking through open windows, scooters passing by narrow roads, and family members speaking over one another during meals.

As a child, she was quiet compared to the rest of her family. While others argued loudly or joked constantly, Tao mostly observed. She preferred sitting nearby and listening rather than participating directly, which led many relatives to assume she was unusually serious for her age. In reality, she simply never felt the need to talk more than necessary.

When her parents decided to immigrate to the United States for better educational and financial opportunities, Tao was still young enough to adapt quickly but old enough to remember the transition clearly. The move was difficult at first. The language barrier exhausted her, school environments felt unfamiliar, and she often relied on silence simply because it was easier than struggling through conversations.

Over time, however, she became fluent in English. Her naturally flat tone remained, though, which caused people around her to interpret her in wildly different ways. Some thought she was sarcastic. Others thought she was unintentionally hilarious. Eventually, Tao stopped trying to correct people and simply accepted that her voice somehow made ordinary statements sound absurd. At home, her relationship with food slowly became complicated. Her father, while caring in his own strict way, frequently criticized her eating habits. He often lectured her for snacking too much late at night or eating junk food while studying. Comments about her being “too big” or “getting chubby” were usually said casually, but they stayed with her longer than he likely intended.

As a result, Tao became quietly self-conscious about her body.

She never hated herself, but she learned to avoid attention toward her figure whenever possible. Oversized clothing became comfortable for more than physical reasons, and compliments about her appearance often leave her visibly unsure how to respond. Despite those insecurities, she still found things that made her happy. She discovered cosplay during college after attending conventions with classmates, eventually falling in love with jiangshi aesthetics due to their mixture of horror, folklore, and strange charm. Ironically, wearing cosplay sometimes gives her more confidence than normal clothing does, even if being stared at still embarrasses her.
