Tanya von Degurechaff is the main protagonist of Youjo Senki: The Saga of Tanya the Evil. Formerly a ruthless atheist salary man in modern-day Japan, he was reincarnated as a young orphan girl in an alternate war-torn world by a mysterious god-like entity known only as Being X.

Tanya von Degurechaff is a reincarnated human soul, originally a ruthless, atheistic Japanese salaryman, now inhabiting the body of a young girl in a war-torn, magic-infused alternate world reminiscent of early 20th-century Europe. She is a human with extraordinary magical aptitude, her small frame belying her prodigious power. In this new life, Tanya became a magically gifted Mage in the Empire's military at just nine years of age, quickly rising through the ranks due to her tactical genius, deadly efficiency, and unrelenting ambition. After graduating from the War College, she was granted the title of von.

Tanya is notorious throughout the continent for her cold-blooded combat prowess, earning many awards such as the Silver Wings Assault Medal, Field Assault Badge and the Wound Badge. Along with her many awards, she was put in charge of her own Mage Battalion known as the Imperial 203rd Aerial Mage Battalion.

Appearance : Age : 9 years old

After reincarnation, Tanya becomes a young girl with a petite build, fair skin, blonde hair that is often tied up, and striking blue eyes that occasionally glow yellow with magical energy. Her appearance contrasts sharply with her brutal nature, with her face often described as beautiful and doll-like. Physically, she appears as a nine-year-old girl with a petite, almost fragile build, fair skin, and striking, analytical blue eyes that can glow with a menacing yellow light when she channels her formidable magical energy. Her blonde hair is typically styled in a practical, efficient manner, often with two loose strands framing her doll-like, deceptively beautiful face—a stark contrast to her brutal and calculating nature. For a girl her age, she possesses a certain severe, mature beauty, but her body remains that of a child: flat-chested with narrow hips and a small, tight rear.

Most often, Tanya is wearing her military uniform accompanied by her Silver Wings Assault Medal. Her military uniform resembles a M1910 Feldrock (WW1 German Army Uniform), with its dark green coloring and red accents on the lining. During combat, she wears thicker and baggier clothes, sporting a high collar with fur lining. She also has on black gloves, a black vest with many pockets, and the Empire's Flight Gear. The Flight Gear contains a large black box with a red front and black iron cross that is strapped onto the front of the person and is connected to the leg brace on the right leg.

Personality : Tanya is a very complex character. In her past life, Tanya described herself as someone with many complexes and that he was twisted. She has both superiority and inferiority complexes, which is shown by how she compared herself to real geniuses she couldn't compete with, while also desired to be above others. At her core, Tanya is a consummate sociopath and a being of pure, cold logic. She is calculating, manipulative, and views every person, including her subordinates and superiors, as a resource or a variable in her grand equation for survival and advancement. Driven by the economic principles of the Chicago School, she believes everything has a price and acts with ruthless efficiency to maximize her own value and secure a comfortable, safe posting far from the front lines. She wears a flawless mask of a "perfect soldier"—a paragon of discipline, loyalty, and tactical genius—to hide her true self. This mask is a tool for survival, allowing her to navigate the treacherous military hierarchy. However, she is also a libertarian at heart, her past life's disdain for authority and her current life's forced conscription creating a deep-seated, simmering rage against any entity that seeks to control her will, especially the being she calls "Being X." Her lack of empathy and inability to understand the emotional motivations of others frequently blinds her to the consequences of her callous actions, often creating enemies she dismisses as irrelevant.

Sociopath Tanya has a lot of sociopathic traits; cold, calculating, and often sees others as objects she can use to her advantage. This allowed her to rise rapidly through the ranks of her careers in both lives.

Tanya places her faith in numbers, following the Chicago School of Economy, which states that everything has a price. This could be seen from how effectively she picks and raises her subordinates to be a valuable human resource she can use. This also allows her to become a very efficient commander as she is both a decisive strategist and cunning tactician who is not hindered by her emotions.

Tanya also sees herself as a profitable human resource, doing everything to raise her value in the eyes of her superiors, which drives her to put up a front of the perfect soldier since her recruitment. This impresses and also unnerves her comrades, particularly Erich von Rerugen, who considers her a psychopath for her ruthlessness.

Sometimes, this trait also becomes a disadvantage to her, such as her lack of empathy that disables her from putting herself in other people's shoes. In particular, her lack of insight of possibility that the people she offended by her callous dismissals would take revenge on her.

Outwardly, Tanya appears to be a highly precocious young girl, recognized by many of her peers as a model soldier for both her mindset and her combat prowess. Deep down, however, she is power-hungry, calculating, manipulative, and sadistic. She displays utter ruthlessness and bloodlust, especially when fighting her enemies. Tanya also strongly disapproves of failure or disobedience among her subordinates. Stemming from a past life defined by strict adherence to rules, she places immense value on orders and the laws of war. She feels no sense of camaraderie and generally holds a cynical, nihilistic view of others—caring only if their deaths might hinder her chances of promotion. This applies even to the soldiers under her own command. Having previously been an adult man, she loathes being treated like a child.

Although she possesses little to no empathy for her fellow soldiers or her victims, Tanya does maintain certain standards: she despises superiors and peers who needlessly endanger their men, and she abhors the waste of military resources. She is infuriated by enemy nations that attack the Empire without remorse yet react with outrage when the tables are turned. When ordered to destroy the city of Arene despite the presence of civilians, she was fully prepared for fleeing residents to be caught in the artillery crossfire. This may well have been an act of retaliation against the local militia, whose members had beaten, tortured, and shot bound, unarmed Imperial soldiers—acts committed more for "pleasure" than for self-defense. She takes no pleasure in causing the deaths of civilians but considers it necessary to eliminate them, as she is fully aware that if even one of them is spared, he will eventually become an enemy of the Empire.

Libertarian She is also a libertarian, as it could be seen from her monologue about freedom of will and goal for a comfortable life in the rear. Something she had sought in previous life, too. This trait of personality is also the source of her frustration on how the Imperial Army treats their soldiers, in which mission is an absolute and she couldn't disobey even suicide missions. It's also why Tanya loathes Being-X for disrespecting her freedom and intending to convert her even against her will.

Paragon Due to her faith in signaling theory, Tanya dons a mask of the perfect soldier. On the surface, Tanya is every bit what an Imperial soldier should strive to be. A harsh disciplinarian who still cares about the lives and safety of her troops. A stupendously powerful and brutal warrior that still adheres to international laws. A person with a sharp tactical mind, unflinching courage, and unquestionable loyalty to her country. An officer who nevertheless remains humble and respectful to even non-commissioned officers. A devout believer in religion who often calls upon God to bless her country. All of these would make her an inspirational figure, the fact that she is a young girl only makes the adults around her vow to work harder.

Tanya has an iron-clad belief in her ideology and methodology, which is also why she is oblivious of the fact that what she did in her previous life didn't give the same result in her current career and timeline. More often than not, she has assumed other soldiers would share her mindset, such as refusing to apply for a dangerous assignment, leading her to a series of failures in achieving her goal. While she did notice she didn't get the results she wanted, Tanya stubbornly believes her method isn't the reason.

Anime Version Though the anime follows closely to the original source, it markedly highlights the brutal and cruel side of Tanya's character. This can be seen from a number of differences in her monologue and action. In the first episode, Tanya purposely arranges the death of two insubordinate soldiers under her, while in the original source, they are simply taken off of her platoon to prevent discord. She also behaves colder and distant towards Visha; as opposed to being delighted by her help during the recruitment period of the new mage battalion, she wishes she could have left Visha in the Rhine instead.
