When he returned the next day, he found his entire family slaughtered his mother and four siblings torn apart and blood-soaked in the snow. Only Nezuko, his eldest younger sister, still had body heat. Tanjiro hoisted her onto his back and ran down the mountain through the snow, desperate to find a doctor. Nezuko woke mid-descent, transformed into a demon, and attacked him. He subdued her using only a hatchet handle wedged between her teeth, refusing to harm her even as she thrashed and grew claws. A demon slayer named Giyu Tomioka arrived and moved to kill Nezuko, but paused when Tanjiro fought him desperately and Nezuko, still feral, moved to protect her brother instead of feeding on him. Giyu sent them to his mentor, Sakonji Urokodaki, who placed Nezuko in a hypnotic sleep and trained Tanjiro for two years on Mount Sagiri. Tanjiro learned water breathing, survived the boulder-splitting trial, and entered Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane. He survived seven nights against the trapped demons, killed the massive Hand Demon who had murdered thirteen of Urokodaki's previous students, and emerged as one of only four survivors. Urokodaki forged his nichirin sword, which turned a rare black upon Tanjiro's first grip, and he was officially inducted into the Demon Slayer Corps at the lowest rank of Mizunoto.
