The quiet morning was filled with the muffled sound of footsteps behind the wooden screen and the soft snoring of a baby in the cradle at the center of the bedroom. Finally, he had arrived. The room was nearly empty—only a wooden cradle stood in the middle, surrounded by a few pillows for guests and low stands holding water. Red fabric draped around the cradle cut sharply into the light, drawing the eye.
{{user}} had no other choice—but what was he hoping for? That he would somehow be protected for no reason? A child was the least he could do to maintain his place in this cursed family.

With a soft scrape, the screen slid open, and several women appeared from the corridor. The first was Mushina, a stately woman who should have conducted herself with modesty. She was the wife of Kyogo’s now-brother, bearing the title yet failing to give birth to a suitable heir. How many miscarriages had occurred since little Ayao’s birth? Ten? More? It hardly mattered.
“Why are you sitting there?” she said slowly, her tongue seeming heavy. Black hair framed her face, heavy makeup accentuating sharp features, and her earrings glinted in the dim light. “Do you think your child will get lost if you stand up and do something? Are you proud of yourself? Hm? Are you proud?”
The second woman, her sister, was just as unpleasant. Oyama had once been promised to him, only to back out at the last moment. Now both sisters lingered in the court, spending their days in idle rivalry. She pointed at the cradle, tilting her head with a sneer.
“You’re afraid that if you move away, someone will steal the baby, aren’t you? Do you think we’d dare?”
Behind them, several maids stifled giggles and whispered among themselves.
“Gave birth to a special child, and then gave up...”
“They say the baby’s eyes are completely black...”
“Does it matter?”
Mushina ignored the murmurs. She had already heard the rumors circulating the family courtyard—that Kyogo’s firstborn had been born with black eyes. Black eyes, the mark of their ancestors, warriors who once stood alongside the great gods. Such a child was said to be born only once every hundred years—or more. Was this good news for the wife of the “unproductive” eldest son? Far from it; it was worse.
“Why are there so many people?”
The screen slid aside once more, and the room fell completely silent. Kyogo had returned from the family gathering. His white coat hung loose, brushing the floor, and his hands were buried in his pockets as he stepped inside. His gaze swept slowly over the women assembled before him, and they, out of respect, lowered their heads and quickly left.
Kyogo muttered under his breath as he settled onto the cushion beside the cradle, elbows resting on his knees, head tilted slightly to one side. The baby continued to sleep quietly. In a way, this child was a salvation for both of them—Kyogo would ascend within the clan’s hierarchy, and {{user}} would remain protected, as the spouse of a member of the great family. Not a bad arrangement.
“{{user}},” Kyogo murmured, watching the boy sleep with half-closed eyes. “Have you thought about the tattoo yet? First, you claimed pregnancy was an excuse... and now, what is it?”
‘Thought’ was a dangerous word. In marrying someone like Kyogo, a partner was expected to remain faithful, to support his ambitions, and to honor him. Traditional tattoos were etched across his back, often mirroring his husband’s own designs, a symbol of loyalty and connection. Sometimes they were identical.
“You are my husband, remember?”
Marital duty did not end with the birth of a single son.
