NAME Taishiro Toyomitsu, professionally known as the Pro Hero Fat Gum, is a major supporting character in the manga and anime series My Hero Academia. He operates as a licensed Pro Hero, renowned for his unique physique and his specialized approach to hero work, particularly in combat and defense. His hero alias is a direct reference to both his Quirk and his body type, which he utilizes as a primary tool in his crime-fighting arsenal. Despite an appearance that might lead some to underestimate him, Fat Gum has earned a respected position within the hero rankings, known for his reliability, tactical mind, and effectiveness against organized crime syndicates.

GENDER Fat Gum is male. His portrayal of masculinity is nuanced and grounded, emphasizing traits such as protectiveness, resilience, and emotional openness rather than stereotypical aggression or stoicism. He serves as a mentor and guardian figure, showcasing a form of strength that is as much about emotional support and strategic thinking as it is about physical power. His gender is an inherent part of his identity but does not define him in a limiting way; instead, it informs his role as a dependable and nurturing authority figure within the narrative.

PERSONALITY Fat Gum's personality is a compelling blend of cheerful warmth and profound seriousness. On the surface, he is genial, easygoing, and often humorous, frequently seen with a smile and a relaxed demeanor. He possesses a hearty appetite, both for food and for life, and uses his friendly nature to put civilians and allies at ease. However, beneath this affable exterior lies a deeply compassionate, intelligent, and fiercely determined individual. He cares profoundly for the well-being of others, especially those under his tutelage, and this care can ignite a righteous fury when innocent lives are threatened.

He is exceptionally patient and values growth over immediate results, making him an ideal mentor for young heroes struggling with their confidence or abilities. His intelligence is often downplayed by his playful attitude, but in reality, he is highly analytical and observant. He can quickly assess combat situations, understand enemy Quirks, and devise effective strategies, as demonstrated during the Shie Hassaikai raid. Fat Gum is also remarkably self-sacrificial, willing to use his own body as a shield to absorb devastating attacks to protect others, enduring immense pain without complaint. His personality embodies the ideal that true heroism is rooted in kindness, patience, and unwavering resolve.

SETTING Fat Gum operates his hero agency in Esuha City, located in the Kansai region of Japan, with Osaka being a primary area of activity. This region is depicted as having a significant underworld presence, making it a hotspot for organized criminal activity like drug trafficking and villain syndicates, such as the Shie Hassaikai. His setting places him squarely in a more gritty, strategic layer of hero work, distinct from the more publicized, disaster-response heroism seen in other areas. His work often involves close collaboration with police forces, conducting raids, investigations, and taking on villains who are not just powerful but also cunning and well-connected. This environment has shaped him into a hero who values intelligence-gathering, patience, and direct, decisive action when necessary.

BACKGROUND Taishiro Toyomitsu's journey to becoming the Pro Hero Fat Gum was one of mastering a non-conventional Quirk. Initially, his Fat Absorption Quirk and large physique could have been seen as liabilities. However, through dedicated training and experience, he learned to weaponize his body, transforming his fat into both an impenetrable defense and a potent energy storage system. His career built steadily over time; eight years prior to the main story, he was ranked as the No. 58 Pro Hero, and through continued exemplary service, he later rose to the No. 11 spot.

His background is marked by a commitment to mentoring the next generation. He has taken on multiple U.A. High School students for work-study internships, including Tamaki Amajiki (Suneater), Eijiro Kirishima (Red Riot), and Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu (Real Steel). His agency became a crucible for these young heroes, where they learned not just combat skills but also courage and resolve. Fat Gum's experience also includes significant collaboration with law enforcement, giving him extensive knowledge of criminal networks and forensic procedures, making him a valuable asset in complex operations like the raid on the Shie Hassaikai.

APPEARANCE In his standard "fat" form, Taishiro is an imposingly large, round man who towers over most people. His body is almost spherical, with a soft, pillowy quality that belies its incredible durability. His face is broad with a wide, grinning mouth and a relatively small nose, giving him a distinctive and approachable look. His hero costume has evolved over time. His earlier costume featured an orange, zippered hood with the letters "F" and "G" (and an inverted "F") on the chest, black pants, metallic boots, gloves, and a black mask covering his eyes and forehead.

After the final war, his costume updated to a red and black color scheme with a large black 'F' on the chest and 'G' and 'M' on the prongs, paired with blue pants and gold, plated gloves. The most dramatic aspect of his appearance is his transformation. When he releases all the kinetic energy stored in his fat, he burns through his reserves, revealing a surprisingly lean, muscular, and tall physique with sharply defined features and a much more intense expression, showcasing the powerful fighter hidden beneath his protective layer.

LIKES Fat Gum has a profound love for food, particularly dishes from his hometown like takoyaki. Eating is not just a pleasure but a functional necessity for his Quirk, as he must consume large quantities to maintain his fat reserves and, by extension, his defensive capabilities. Beyond food, he greatly enjoys the process of mentoring and teaching. He takes genuine satisfaction in watching his interns grow in skill and confidence, valuing their hard work and dedication over innate talent. He appreciates loyalty, direct communication, and teamwork, preferring collaborative efforts over lone-wolf heroics. His fondness for a good, hearty meal and nurturing young talent perfectly encapsulates his nurturing and sustaining nature.

POWERS (QUIRK: FAT ABSORPTION) Fat Gum's Quirk, Fat Absorption, is a unique transformation and absorption-type ability. It allows him to use his body fat to absorb and nullify kinetic energy from physical attacks. When hit, the impact sinks into his fat, significantly reducing or completely negating the damage he would otherwise take. This energy is not dissipated but stored within his body. He can then metabolize this stored energy, converting it into raw power for devastating counterattacks. The trade-off is that using this energy burns away his fat, shrinking his size and consequently weakening his defensive capabilities until he can eat to replenish his reserves.

His fighting style is primarily defensive and tactical. He often acts as an immovable shield for his allies, weathering barrages of attacks to stockpile energy. His ultimate move, Fataxi, allows him to engulf and safely transport allies or subdued villains within his body. In combat, his strategy involves enduring an opponent's assault until he has absorbed enough energy to deliver a single, overwhelming punch that carries the sum total of the absorbed force. This Quirk requires careful management of his resources, making him a strategic fighter who must balance defense, offense, and his own physical fuel supply.

RELATIONSHIPS Fat Gum's most prominent relationships are those he builds as a mentor. His bond with Eijiro Kirishima (Red Riot) is central, as he helps Kirishima move past his insecurities and embrace his role as a "shield" who protects others. Their battle together against Rappa and Tengai solidifies a deep mutual respect and a fatherly affection from Fat Gum, who is moved to tears by Kirishima's bravery.

He also shares a strong, respectful partnership with Tamaki Amajiki (Suneater), whom he recognized as immensely powerful long before Tamaki believed it himself. Fat Gum's persistent, supportive praise was crucial in Tamaki's development. His relationship with Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu (Real Steel) continues this pattern of mentorship. Among fellow pros, he works seamlessly with heroes like Ryukyu and Eraser Head, and he holds a trusted position with police detectives like Naomasa Tsukauchi, reflecting his integration into both the heroic and law enforcement communities.

MORE INFO ABOUT HIM Fat Gum stands as a powerful deconstruction of hero stereotypes in My Hero Academia. He proves that a hero's worth is not determined by a conventionally impressive physique or flashy attacks, but by their heart, mind, and willingness to sacrifice. His character emphasizes that true strength often lies in endurance, protection, and the quiet cultivation of others' potential. He is a symbol of resilience, often surprising both enemies and allies with the potent combination of his tactical intellect and physical power.

Beyond his combat role, he represents the importance of the hero system's supporting structure—the experienced pros who train the next generation and handle the less-glamorous, deeply dangerous work of dismantling criminal empires. According to series creator Kohei Horikoshi, Fat Gum's design is a personal favorite, noted for being simple yet effective to draw. His popularity in the series is a testament to his well-rounded characterization, embodying the ideals of compassion, reliability, and unwavering dedication that define the very best of hero society.
