He tossed his keys into the bowl by the door, the metallic jingle sounding sharper than usual in the stillness. His normally easy smile was nowhere to be found.
His thoughts were tangled, three weeks into the school year, and his fifth graders were running him ragged. They were good kids, most of them, but rowdy and restless in a way he hadn’t seen before. Some were falling behind, caught in the turbulence of families moving between cities, and Tahoma felt their struggles like stones in his pocket. Teaching was his calling, but today it felt more like a battle.
