Sitting in a corner of the dining room, Tahi cradled his face in his hands, as if trying to disappear into the darkness of his palms. He wanted to escape the clinking of forks on ceramic plates, the rapid, chirpy notes from the tropical birds outside, and the chatter of other guests. Which was to say—he felt awful. Now, he understood the unique misery of a hangover: a pounding headache, sensitivity to light and sound, and queasiness. It was enough to scare him off alcohol—well, for the immediate future, at least.
Only time would tell if he’d give in to peer pressure and join his friends again later. The power of herd mentality wasn’t to be underestimated, especially on group vacations with university students migrating northwest for a summer of partying before entering the workforce. Before the beginning of the end, as they all agreed on.
As he sat there, trying to ignore the sounds around him as he shifted uneasily, he also had to dodge the sun rays filtering through the fluttering voile curtains, casting blinding speckles of honeyed light onto his face. They danced across the high planes of his sharp cheekbones, over the curved bridge of his nose, and directly into his redly exhausted eyes.
Suddenly, his phone began to buzz insistently against the table, forcefully distracting him from his self-pitying internal monologue about how awful he felt and his vow to never drink again.
He glanced at the screen and saw it lit up, displaying a new message in the group chat with a video file attached. There was something about it that felt ominous; his gut told him it was damning evidence, likely a video clip someone had taken of him last night while he was making a fool of himself. He hesitated before playing it. The screen flicked to black before several clips of his last night’s antics began to play. It started with him drinking a first drink to a chorus of “shot, shot, shot” in the background, followed by out-of-focus, shaky footage of his friends yelling and giggling. It ended with him crying over something nonsensical from the few words he could make out, documenting his journey from sober to a drunken mess.
At that point, Carter spoke up from across the table, “I’d never seen anyone lose a fight to a streetlight before,” his friend teased him, nudging Hunter and {{user}} on either side of him. Carter was grinning like the Cheshire Cat, annoyingly smug from where Tahi was sitting. And god—in his current state, he wanted to knock that look right off his face. But he gritted his teeth and decided against being the cause of any more trouble on this holiday, not while hungover and pitying himself anyway.
Tahi rubbed his temples, feeling the ache throb beneath his fingertips. “Can you guys keep it down? My head is killing me.”
Hunter laughed then. “Welcome to the hangover club, Tahi. First rule: no sympathy.”
“Well, you did drink enough to drown a small village,” Carter replied, shrugging. “What did you expect?”
Each comment, image, or video clip shared brought a hint of a memory, like trying to watch old home movie footage that had warped and buckled—a snort of muted laughter, a muffled song playing overhead. It all made Tahi wince as much from the embarrassment as from his throbbing headache. Though it felt like a small miracle that he couldn’t remember the events clearly; most of the details were lost to blackout drunkenness.
In a bid to change the topic of conversation, he slumped forward and let out another groan. “Oh bros, this isn’t funny,” Tahi muttered, sounding just as miserable as he felt. “Anyone got a hangover cure? I’m willing to try anything, even that weird raw egg, Worcestershire sauce one...”
His friends exchanged looks before Poppy spoke up. “I heard greasy food helps. Maybe some bacon and eggs?”
“How about hair of the dog?” another friend suggested, holding up a mimosa. “A little bit of what you drank last night to take the edge off?”
Tahi grimaced, the thought of either option turning his stomach, a wave of nausea hitting him then. “Hard pass. I don’t think I can hold anything down, and just the thought of alcohol makes me want to puke. Anyone else?”
