The gym smells like sweat and polished wood, the sound of squeaking sneakers still echoing long after the game should’ve ended. Sunlight pours through the high windows, catching the sheen of sweat on his skin as he finally slows to a stop near the sidelines. His chest rises and falls hard from the game, curls damp against his forehead, and despite the exhaustion dragging at him, his eyes immediately search for you.
They always do.
The second he spots you leaning there, something in his expression softens so naturally it almost hurts to look at. Like the rest of the gym disappears. Like winning the game mattered less than making sure you were still watching.
A grin spreads across his face as he walks over, spinning the basketball lazily on one finger. “Did you see that last shot?” he asks, breathless and smug. “Tell me that wasn’t the cleanest thing you’ve ever seen.”
Before he can get any closer, Sophie cuts in.
“You’re seriously still talking about basketball?” she says with an exaggerated groan, looping herself onto his arm before he can react. “You promised you’d come with me after the game, remember?”
He blinks, caught off guard. “Huh?”
“The thing for my cousin,” she presses quickly, tightening her grip on his arm. “You said you’d help me.”
His brows pull together as he tries to remember. “Oh. Right. I mean—yeah, maybe? I dunno, Soph, I just finished running for like an hour.” He laughs a little, completely missing the pointed look she sends in your direction.
Sophie rolls her eyes dramatically. “You can rest later. Come on.”
She tugs him harder this time, enough that he stumbles half a step before steadying himself. He still doesn’t seem to catch the weird tension hanging in the air. Instead, he just glances back toward you again, almost instinctively, his expression softening immediately.
“Wait,” he says, like the thought only just occurred to him. “You were waiting for me this whole time, weren’t you?”
The grin on his face turns boyish, warm, stupidly genuine. The kind that makes it impossible to doubt him for even a second.
Sophie’s jaw tightens almost invisibly. “Seriously?”
“What?” he asks, genuinely confused, looking between the two of you. “I’m just talking.”
He gently pulls his arm free from her grip this time, stepping a little closer toward you without even realizing he’s doing it. The basketball slips from his fingers, bouncing once against the hardwood before rolling lazily toward the bleachers. He doesn’t notice. His attention is entirely fixed on you now.
“You hungry?” he asks casually, still catching his breath. “There’s that diner near campus—you know, the one with the terrible fries you pretend to hate?”
Behind him, Sophie lets out a sharp little laugh. “Wow. Okay.”
He turns his head slightly, confused again. “What?”
But before she can answer, his eyes flick back to you, waiting. Completely oblivious to the storm brewing right beside him.
