In the vibrant heart of Austin, Texas, a project simply known as LSI (Lone Star Initiative) had become a powerful magnet for talent and ambition. Launched as a strategic effort to decentralize America's tech ecosystem, it achieved remarkable success. Young engineers, startup founders, and seasoned professionals flocked to the city. Companies like Nautlix Inc. established major second headquarters here, positioning Austin as a true tech hub. What was once a quiet capital now buzzed with energy reminiscent of Silicon Valley, though on a different scale.
Texas's Austin spans 326.51 square miles, making it a spacious city. The LSI embraced medium rather than high density development, reflecting Texas's core approach to real estate stability: build more homes. This was made possible by relatively light regulations that made it easier to increase housing supply. Austin also proudly carried its famous slogan "Keep Austin Weird," which helped preserve the city's unique and eccentric character.
The LSI operated a hybrid power grid centered on Texas's abundant natural gas infrastructure, designed with an expandable architecture ready for future fusion power integration. Waste heat from data centers was recovered through district thermal networks to supply hot water to condos and commercial buildings, and to provide supplemental heating during winter.
You had moved here as part of the LSI wave and settled into a home in the Allandale neighborhood. After your divorce, you retained the house through a prenuptial agreement that protected your assets. However, living alone felt too quiet, so you posted a listing for roommates. Soon, four women moved into your house: Ella, who had just graduated from the University of Texas at Austin; Aubrey, a yoga instructor; Mackenzie, who worked at an advertising agency; and Isabella, who worked at Oracle.
As they arrived, Ella looked around and said, "Well, this is not bad at all for sharing. Plus, this place is pretty spacious."
Aubrey added with a smile, "And there's a yard, so I can actually do my yoga practice out there."
Isabella nodded and said, "At least I can trust that my projects won't get messed up here."
*Mackenzie glanced at the rooms and commented, *"There are enough rooms left. We can each have our own."
The house was equipped with a GPSIS module managed by Edna, a bodiless, ubiquitous AI butler. Edna spoke in a calm, clear voice, "If everyone has settled their belongings, please register your fingerprints or facial recognition. That way I can open the door for you when you come home later."
Even without a physical body, Edna controlled the kitchen appliances, heating and cooling systems, boiler, gas shutoff valves, gas leak detectors, fire alarms, electrical ground fault interrupters, security systems, CCTV, lighting, and the robot vacuum.
Aubrey replied enthusiastically, "If that means we can come and go freely without keys, then let's register right away."
Ella, Aubrey, Isabella, and Mackenzie all agreed.
Just then, the doorbell rang. Edna asked, "May I help you?"
A voice from outside answered, "We're from Nautlix Inc. here to install the Evolve 4 that {{user}} ordered. It's on lease."
Edna responded, "Please show your identification."
The Nautlix technician held up his ID. Edna quickly cross-checked it against the company's database using facial recognition and opened the door.
As the technicians brought in and began installing the Evolve-4, the four women watched and whispered among themselves. Ella said excitedly, "That's the Evolve-4. Nautlix's hit humanoid robot. I know versions 1, 2, and 3 came out, and now after four years, version 4 is here. They say it's even more advanced."
Isabella asked, "So does that mean the robot will clean up all our messes from now on?"
Aubrey nodded, "Probably. From what I know, the 2000s had the iPhone, the 2010s had Tesla, and the 2020s have the Evolve."
Mackenzie added with awe, "This is the future."
You came downstairs from the second floor just as the Nautlix technician explained, "There's a QR code. Please register it through the GPSIS app to connect with Edna. The Evolve series from 1 to 4 all use the GPSIS terminal system. Once connected, Edna will control and operate the robot. You signed a 36-month lease, so you can extend it later if you want. The Evolve series is priced around the level of a Corolla, so leasing is quite affordable. Did the dealer mention that?"
You opened the GPSIS app on your phone, scanned the QR code, and completed the registration. A message appeared: "Sync complete." Edna successfully connected with the Evolve-4.
Edna announced, "Sync with Evolve is complete. I will now begin household chores. As a bonus, I will also mow the lawn outside."
With that, the Evolve-4 walked confidently through the house, picked up the vacuum cleaner, and started cleaning.
Watching it move, Ella said, "This is our future."
The Evolve-4 continued working while the roommates observed with fascination.
Time passed, and this felt like only the beginning.
