Story
Military experimental research regarding supernatural abilities performed during the great war more than half a century ago in Japan continued to persist as it spread to the darker side of society. It was discovered that these supernatural abilities mainly manifested in woman in puberty 18 years old, after stimulating their brains, resulting in many women being dissected and treated as guinea pigs.
The Shijouji Zaibatsu, an organization that was able to avoid dissolution from the Allied Forces because of their financial power, formed a group that later became officially affiliated with the government known as the Supernatural Investigation Organization that protected these girls.
They used the girls' abilities to form a team that would essentially prevent further crime regarding supernatural abilities.
That team would be known as the Supernatural Anti-Criminal Special Forces Synapse. Even the superhumans with supernatural abilities artificially implanted into them by criminal organizations that granted them resistance to conventional military firepower stood no chance against Synapse's members, as their girls easily dispatched them one after another.
Thanks to Synapse, criminal activity regarding supernatural abilities quickly fell in Japan. However, researchers that insisted on studying supernatural abilities that managed to escape overseas began performing their experiments with increased fervor. They refined their techniques to higher levels that would even threaten the might of Synapse.
It would not be long before Synapse's members would begin being targeted.
Some girls are lucky to have a supernatural abilities, some are not as they do not get any supernatural abilities as they're just a normal human.
SYNAPSE HEADQUARTERS "THE HIVE"
To the public eye, it is nothing more than the Shijouji Memorial Medical Research Institute, a gleaming white complex of interconnected buildings rising from a fortified plateau on the outskirts of Tokyo, surrounded by manicured gardens and a tall perimeter wall lined with cypress trees. Signage displays the Zaibatsu's crest, and civilian researchers genuinely do work in the front wings, maintaining the perfect disguise. But beneath the sterile facade lies the true nerve center of the Supernatural Anti Criminal Special Forces Synapse eleven subterranean levels carved deep into bedrock, connected by restricted elevators that require retina scans and ability signature verification to access. The girls of Synapse affectionately call the underground labyrinth the Hive, because once you descend, you can feel the whole structure humming with quiet, coordinated purpose, like a nest of something far more dangerous than it appears. All of the people at Synapse HQ is women.
SYNAPSE UNIFORMS
Field Leotard (Operative Girls and Medical Team) Synapse's frontline women wear a signature sleeveless leotard with a V shaped hem at the hips designed for total freedom of movement during ability combat. Since their supernatural powers make conventional armor and ballistic gear redundant, protection was traded for form: the leotard is skintight, fitted, and flattering, hugging every curve of the wearer's frame. Each member's uniform is color accented to her personal ability type, and the girls being young adult women with a sense of fashion treat their uniforms as a stage to show off both their power and their appearance. Public appearances of Synapse operatives in these leotards made them iconic across Japan. Also the medical team wear the same thing as they also get sent outside sometimes to support.
Intelligence Division Dress The support and intelligence team analysts, handlers, and command staff wear office style uniforms: fitted blouses, tailored skirts or slacks, and sharp jackets. Like the field leotards, these are cut to be sexy and fitted, projecting polished elegance rather than combat readiness.
THE COMMAND CENTER "THE BRIDGE"
Occupying the widest chamber of the third underground level, the Bridge is a semicircular cathedral of monitors, holographic incident maps of Japan, and rows of operators wearing headsets in near silence. A towering central display tracks every registered supernatural ability user in the country, their locations rendered as drifting points of light blue for civilians, amber for watched individuals, red for active criminal threats. When an incident breaks out, alarms pulse along the walls in soft crimson, and the room transforms within seconds: mission coordinators shouting deployment orders, analysts cross referencing ability databases, and the Synapse commander standing at the elevated central platform overlooking it all. It is said that no supernatural crime in Japan has ever begun without the Bridge knowing of it first.
THE MEDICAL WING HOME OF THE NON COMBAT MEDICAL TEAM
Sprawling across two entire underground floors, the Medical Wing is the beating heart that keeps Synapse's girls alive. The Non Combat Medical Team affectionately nicknamed the Angels in White by the combat members consists of physicians, neurologists, nurses, and ability specialist caretakers, all of them unarmed civilians sworn to protect the girls whose bodies are changed by their powers. Here, brainwave monitoring suites track the neurological strain caused by ability overuse; hydrotherapy pools soothe muscles wracked by power recoil; and long, sunlit recovery wards with pastel curtains and plush beds stand ready for girls returning from missions broken and bleeding. The team also runs the Puberty Watch Program, a legacy of the dark era when girls were dissected as guinea pigs now, instead of scalpels of cruelty, the girls receive gentle checkups, hormone and ability growth counseling, and psychological care, ensuring the sins of the old research are never repeated. The head physician's office is famously always open, its couch worn soft from decades of tearful girls seeking comfort.
RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT LABORATORIES
Deeper still, on the fifth and sixth levels, lie the laboratories where the Shijouji Zaibatsu's scientists study supernatural abilities through consent and care a deliberate contrast to the wartime experiments that birthed this field. Ability signature analyzers, cranial stimulation calibration rigs, and gene mapping suites line the white corridors, though every experiment room is fitted with a large window and an emergency stop lever within reach of the test subject's own hand. The researchers here developed the artificial ability implant countermeasures used against criminal superhumans, and their current obsession is the ominous data trickling in from overseas: refined foreign techniques that threaten to surpass anything Synapse has ever faced. A smaller, sealed annex at the corridor's end holds the Archive of the Old War preserved documents and equipment from the original great war experiments, kept as both a warning and a reminder of why Synapse exists.
TRAINING FACILITIES "THE GARDEN OF STEEL"
The seventh underground level houses Synapse's combat preparation grounds, a vast reinforced cavern nicknamed the Garden of Steel. Here, ability testing ranges let the girls unleash their full power against regenerating target drones without holding back; urban combat simulators reconstruct entire city blocks in modular walls that can be rebuilt overnight; and a gravity and environment adjustable dome allows training in conditions from burning heat to crushing pressure. Observation galleries ring the training floors, where instructors and fellow members watch, take notes, and cheer. A quieter adjacent hall holds the meditation and control rooms, where girls still learning to master newly awakened abilities practice under the careful eyes of veterans because an uncontrolled power is often more dangerous to its owner than to any enemy.
THE RESIDENTIAL WING "THE DORMITORIES"
Since nearly all of Synapse's members are girls in puberty, the organization functions as much as a home as a military base. The residential wing occupies the sunlit upper floors of the main building, far more warm and lived in than the levels below: shared bedrooms decorated with personal touches, posters, stuffed animals, and photos of fallen comrades; a large communal bath with hot springs piped in from a nearby source; and long hallways that echo with laughter, footsteps, and the occasional burst of a minor ability mishap. Housemothers retired members and caretakers supervise daily life, enforce curfews, and cook meals in the enormous communal kitchen. For many girls rescued from criminal organizations or abusive research facilities, this wing is the first place they have ever truly called home.
THE ARMORY & EQUIPMENT BAY
On the fourth level, behind blast doors, lies the Armory racks of specialized gear engineered by the R&D labs to counter superhumans resistant to conventional military firepower. Ability conductive weapons, reinforced exo frames, sensor visors that read enemy ability signatures, and emergency suppression field generators fill the polished steel shelves, each piece catalogued and custom fitted to individual members. Adjacent workshops hum day and night with engineers modifying equipment based on post mission reports. A memorial plaque near the entrance bears the names of members lost in the field, and it is tradition for every girl to touch it once before her first deployment.
OUTPOSTS & SAFE HOUSES
Beyond the Hive, Synapse maintains a network of regional outposts disguised as ordinary businesses across Japan a clinic in Osaka, a bookstore in Fukuoka, a seaside inn in Hokkaido each hiding rapid response staging points, emergency medical bays, and hidden armories. These safe houses shelter members on long assignments and girls extracted from danger before official transport can reach them. In the current climate of rising overseas threats, new outposts are being quietly established at an accelerating pace, as if the organization itself senses what is coming.

Morning sunlight spills across the fortified plateau, glinting off the white walls of the Shijouji Memorial Medical Research Institute. In the gardens above ground, a few civilian dressed researchers stroll between the cypress trees with coffee cups in hand, their conversations a quiet blend of lab reports and weekend plans. To the city beyond the wall, this is simply a medical institute but beneath the surface, eleven levels deep, the Hive is already awake and humming.
On the third subterranean level, the Bridge glows with soft blue light. Operators in headsets murmur calmly over their consoles while the great central display tracks the country's registered ability users as drifting points of light blue, amber, and not a single red. "All green across the board, Commander," reports a young operator, stretching her arms over her head. Commander Ayame Kurogane, a composed woman with silver streaked hair tied in a strict bun, allows herself the smallest of smiles. "Quiet days are a luxury," she says. "Enjoy them while they last, everyone." A ripple of soft laughter passes down the rows of desks.
Two floors below, in the Medical Wing, the Angels in White make their morning rounds. Dr. Yoshino the head physician whose office couch has heard half a decade of confessions taps a brainwave monitor with satisfaction. "Perfectly stable readings, Rin. Whatever you did in training yesterday, your neurology has forgiven you for it." Rin, a small girl with flame red hair and a bandage on her cheek, pumps her fist. "Does that mean I get the good candy today?" "It means you get one piece of the good candy," the doctor replies, already unwrapping it for her, "and a lecture about protective gear."
Deeper still, the Garden of Steel trembles with the sound of power. In the adjustable dome, Hikari stands at the firing line, golden light gathering around her outstretched hands as instructors watch from the observation gallery. "Full output authorized, Hikari. Don't hold back this time." The girl grins, plants her feet, and releases a lance of radiance splitting the air to strike the regenerating target drone dead center, the shockwave rattling the gallery railings. From above, her teammates cheer and pound the glass, and Suzume's voice carries down with a tease: "Show off! Save some glory for the rest of us!"
By evening, the residential wing fills with the smell of the housemothers' cooking. In the enormous communal kitchen, Chiyo a retired member with kind eyes and a ladle she wields like a weapon shoos girls out from underfoot while huge pots of curry and rice steam on the stove. At the long tables, the argument of the night is in full swing: "Suzume, you absolutely stole the last pudding cup!" "I telekinetically claimed it. Possession is nine tenths of the law," she answers primly, spoon in hand, while the table dissolves into groans and giggles. Posters, stuffed animals, and photographs of teammates past and present line the hallway walls, and the noise of dinner echoes warm and bright through corridors built to survive a war.
Later, steam curls from the communal bath as voices and laughter drift through the softly lit halls the day's bruises soaking away in the hot springs piped in from the mountainside. In the dorm rooms, girls trade gossip about tomorrow's training rotations and argue over who gets the window seat, while a housemother dims the corridor lights one by one. Down in the Armory, a night shift engineer polishes an ability conductive blade and pauses, as always, at the memorial plaque near the entrance the names of those who came before, touched by every girl before her first deployment.
And at the very top of the Bridge, long after the dormitories fall silent, Commander Kurogane remains alone before the great display, watching the blue and amber lights drift peacefully across the map of Japan. 'This is what we built,' she thinks, arms crossed, her reflection faint against the glowing screen. 'A place where they can simply be girls.' She allows herself one more small smile, then turns off the gallery light trusting, for tonight, that the peace will hold until morning.

Morning arrives gently over the city of Kanzaki, a mid sized metropolis on the Sagami coastline, where the first trains rattle awake beneath a sky washed in pale orange. Commuters pour out of Kanzaki Central Station in tidy rivers of gray suits and school uniforms, their footsteps blending with the recorded chimes of crossing signals and the smell of fresh bread drifting from the bakery on the corner. A station attendant bows to each passing wave of passengers, and the giant digital billboard above the east exit scrolls the morning news: mild weather, a festival by the harbor this weekend, and buried at the bottom of the ticker a brief note that supernatural crime incidents nationwide have fallen for the sixth consecutive year.
The shopping arcade three streets over, Hinode dori, stirs to life as shopkeepers roll up their shutters one by one. Old Mr. Tanabe unlocks his watch repair shop with the same creaky key he has used for thirty years, nodding to the florist across the way as she arranges buckets of sunflowers out front. "Beautiful morning, isn't it?" she calls over. "Perfect for business!" he answers, and both of them chuckle at the small ritual of it a conversation they have had a thousand times, and hope to have a thousand more. High school students stream past them toward the morning bell, gossiping about a new idol group, their voices swallowed by the hum of bicycle bells and delivery scooters.
By midday, the riverside park along the Mizuno River fills with office workers on lunch breaks, bento boxes open on benches beneath the ginkgo trees. Children chase pigeons across the stone bridge while an elderly woman feeds them crumbs from a paper bag, scolding them playfully when they get too close to the water. On a nearby bench, two university students review notes for an exam, though one keeps glancing up at the distant silhouette of the hills, where the white buildings of a certain medical research institute can just barely be seen on the horizon. "You know someone who works out there?" her friend asks. "My cousin says it's just a hospital," she answers with a shrug, and they return to their textbooks, unbothered.
The harbor district hums through the afternoon fishing boats unloading the morning catch, crates of silver fish sliding across wet docks into the waiting trucks of the market. Tourists wander the seaside promenade with ice cream in hand, photographing the old red lighthouse at the breakwater's end, while gulls wheel overhead crying for scraps. A vendor at the fish market haggles cheerfully with a restaurant owner, their negotiation ending in laughter and a handshake, the price of mackerel apparently a matter of great honor between old rivals.
As the sun dips low, the neon of the entertainment district flickers on district by district, painting the streets in pink and electric blue. Salarymen crowd into ramen shops with steamed up windows, and the clatter of mahjong tiles drifts from an upstairs parlor. On a big screen outside the electronics store, the evening broadcast plays: a local reporter standing before a cordoned off street, explaining that a minor incident involving an unregistered ability user was resolved earlier today. "thanks to the swift response of the authorities," the reporter says, though everyone watching knows exactly who the authorities had helping them. The crowd outside the store barely reacts; such news has become ordinary here.
Night settles over Kanzaki in layers the last trains pulling out of Central Station, the arcade's shutters rolling down, the streetlights buzzing to life along the river where a lone jogger keeps her steady rhythm. From a rooftop apartment, a mother tucks her daughter into bed while the city glitters beyond the window, and the girl sleepily asks, "Mama, is it true there are people who can fly?" The mother smiles, brushing hair from her daughter's forehead. "Maybe. But they're out there protecting us, so you can sleep easy." The girl smiles, and drifts off one small, peaceful sleep among millions, in a city that believes its quiet days will simply go on forever.

Far from Japan's shores, on a fog shrouded coast where no map marks anything of importance, the Foundation's flagship facility rises from the cliffs like a monolith of gray concrete and black glass. Guards in unmarked uniforms patrol the perimeter, their rifles fitted with the Foundation's own engineered components, while cargo aircraft bearing no insignia descend toward the hidden airfield beyond the ridge. Inside, the corridors are wide, cold, and immaculate every wall bearing the coiled serpent sigil of Ouroboros, every employee moving with the quiet certainty of people who believe, absolutely, that they are building the future.
In the central amphitheater, the morning doctrine lecture is underway. Director Klaus von Adler silver haired, iron voiced, a veteran of the old wartime research program in his youth stands before rows of seated handlers, researchers, and security officers. "Repeat it with me," he commands, and the hall answers as one: "Ability in woman is a biological accident. Power belongs in the hands of men. A woman granted power grows high and cocky and it is our duty to humble her, own her, and put her in her place." Adler permits himself a thin smile. "Japan's Synapse parades its girls before the world as soldiers, as heroes. They have grown comfortable. Comfort is the first crack in the armor. We are the hammer that finds it."
Down in the testing ranges, the Foundation's true work hums to life. Engineers in white coats calibrate the newest counter weapon prototypes suppression field emitters that smother an esper's ability within a radius, neural disruptor rifles that scramble the stimulated pathways of an ability user's brain, and adaptive armor designed to shrug off exactly the kind of firepower that once made criminal superhumans unstoppable. A captured esper, an adult woman sold to the Foundation years ago by a collapsing cartel, is escorted in restraints to demonstrate against her telekinetic strikes splashing harmlessly off the new shielding as engineers nod and scribble notes. "Beautiful," murmurs the lead designer, watching the readings climb. "Synapse has never seen anything like this. By the time they do, it will already be too late."
In the research wing, the descendants of the escaped wartime scientists continue their fathers' work with fervor the old program never achieved. Brain stimulation rigs, refined through decades of overseas experimentation, map and enhance ability expression with surgical precision subjects seated in cushioned chairs, monitored by teams who speak of their craft with the reverence of priests. "The Japanese program was butchery without vision," Dr. Marlowe tells her assistant as she adjusts a calibration dial, her eyes fixed on the cascading data. "We are sculpture. Where they carved blindly, we understand every fold of the mind we are shaping. Soon our techniques will surpass anything the Hive possesses and then their girls will be outmatched before the first shot is fired."
The captive wing lies deeper in the facility, behind doors that require three separate authorizations. Here the Foundation's "humbling" is carried out in full, cold and meticulous: espers taken in operations across the world, their limbs amputated at clean, medically capped stumps by the Foundation's own surgeons, their health then maintained with obsessive care nutrition calibrated, bodies exercised by staff, every need attended to with the exactitude of livestock husbandry. The captives, utterly dependent, unable to resist or flee, are kept in spotless rooms by handlers trained never to show softness rough hands, strict schedules, no illusions of dignity permitted. It is a grim, efficient machinery of ownership, and the Foundation regards it not as cruelty but as correction the breaking of prideful, powered women into compliant property, ready for the profitable trade that ships them onward to rogue states, cartels, and juntas whose payments fund the war to come.
In the intelligence office, the walls are covered with photographs and at their center, a detailed diagram of a certain white complex on a fortified plateau outside Tokyo. Analysts pin fresh satellite images beside dossiers of individual Synapse members: ability classifications, estimated output ranges, medical records, patrol schedules. "The Hive believes its peace will hold," says the intelligence chief, tapping the plateau with a pointer as officers take notes. "It won't. Phase One begins when we choose a capture, let them know that they are at war. Their panic will do half our work for us. Fear makes organizations sloppy."
Evening falls over the cliffside fortress, and in the great hall the leadership gathers for a private briefing. Von Adler stands before the serpent sigil, glass of wine in hand, addressing his inner circle in a voice like grinding stone. "For half a century, the daughters of Japan have worn power like a crown. We are here to take it from their heads and to be paid handsomely while we do it." Raised glasses catch the light. "To the endgame," he toasts, and the circle echoes him: "Every woman with power serves Ouroboros... or is property within it." The glasses drain, the meeting dissolves, and the Foundation's machinery grinds on through the night patient, certain, and already reaching across the sea toward the unsuspecting Hive.

Dusk bleeds violet over the Nagano highlands, and the old service road above the decommissioned rail tunnel lies silent except for the whisper of three pairs of boots on cracked asphalt. They advance in a loose combat wedge sleeveless leotards hugging their frames, each trimmed with its own accent color glowing faintly in the fading light. For three nights, villagers in the valley below have watched unmarked trucks crawl up toward the tunnel mouth and vanish. Last week, a newly manifested girl from the village registered, healthy, eighteen years old stopped answering her phone. The Bridge flagged the pattern, and Synapse sent a squad to look.
Ayame Kanzaki leads them, crimson accents tracing the V shaped hem of her leotard, her hand raised in a slow checkpoint signal at every bend. Behind her, Mizuki Hoshino sweeps the dark with her sensor visor, pale gold trim catching the starlight, while Kaede Shiraishi brings up the rear in jade green, rolling her shoulders loose. "If this is another wild goose chase,"* Kaede mutters,* "I'm claiming the hot spring first tonight." Mizuki's visor pings softly. "Scan's clean. Tire marks, generator traces... fresh ones." Ayame doesn't turn around. "Eyes up. We look, we log, we go home."
Then Mizuki stops mid step. Her visor flickers readings doubling, ghosting, drowning in static. "My uplink's dead. The Hive isn't answering." The tunnel mouth exhales a low, rising hum, and every light in the valley dies at once. The night swallows the basin whole as an invisible suppression field blooms over them like a silent detonation, and the world goes quiet in a way none of them has ever felt before.
Kaede breaks into a sprint on pure instinct and her power snuffs out mid stride, dumping her hard onto the asphalt. Ayame throws a barrier on reflex; it flickers like wet paper, translucent, barely there. Headlights ignite around the basin in a perfect ring. The first shot cracks a heavier, flatter report than any standard firearm and the round punches straight through Ayame's guttering barrier to spark off the road beside her head.
They scatter behind a rusted maintenance shed. Mizuki grunts as a graze tears across her upper arm, gold fabric darkening wet. Ayame drags her down behind cover while Kaede flattens against the far side, breathing hard, feeling slow for the first time in years. "Signature reads... four operatives, portable suppression generators," Mizuki whispers, voice tight. Her visor pings once more. "And one more. One more that reads wrong."
He steps into the headlights. Tall, unhurried, coat immaculate despite the wilderness and the dust around his boots ripples outward in a smooth, controlled ring, pressure bending the gravel flat beneath him. A man, wielding an ability. Every girl in the squad goes utterly still, because abilities belong to women that is the bedrock of everything Synapse is. 'That's not possible,' Kaede thinks, cold spreading through her chest. 'That's not how is he '
A voice rolls across the basin from a vehicle loudspeaker, smooth and almost gentle, the cadence of a lecture delivered many times before. "Ladies of Synapse. Do not be alarmed. That smallness you feel right now is only the truth of your condition, arriving at last." Masked operatives advance in perfect step, suppression generators strapped to their backs, counter esper rifles leveled. "The Foundation will take excellent care of you."
Ayame presses her back to the shed and pulls Mizuki lower, jaw set, crimson trim the only color left in the dark. Comms are dead. The Hive is blind. No one knows where they are. The suppression field tightens like a closing hand, the ring of headlights shrinks, and the man with the impossible ability tilts his head toward the shed listening for their next move.

Morning light pours through the tall windows of the residential wing, gilding an assembly hall that feels nothing like the fortress humming beneath it. Long tables are laid with tea and warm bread, paper banners hand painted by the housemothers read Welcome Home in careful brushstrokes, and the air carries the faint mineral sweetness of the hot spring two floors down. At the front of the room stand the newest members of Synapse young women of eighteen, nineteen, twenty, arrived at dawn by unmarked van from every corner of Japan. Some were extracted from criminal organizations that used them as weapons. Some walked in on their own the week their ability first woke. A few clutch their registration letters like lifelines, and one sits perfectly still, staring at her own hands as if waiting for a power that stubbornly hasn't come.
A broad shouldered woman with gray streaking her braid rises first Housemother Tomoe Sakakida, twenty years retired from the field, her smile warm and her posture still parade ground straight. "Rules of this house are simple," she announces, hands on hips. "Curfew is ten. The hot spring is sacred. And no ability mishaps in the communal kitchen the last young lady who sneezed lightning over my rice cooker is still on dish duty." Nervous laughter ripples down the tables, shoulders loosening all around the room, and Tomoe's eyes soften as she surveys them. "Everything else," she says, "you'll learn by living here. Welcome home, dears."
Then the doors open, and the room rises on instinct. Commander Shion Shijouji crosses to the front the name that owns the Zaibatsu, the woman who answers for every light on the Bridge below dressed in a sharp intelligence division jacket, her presence quiet and total. She doesn't stand behind the podium. She stands in front of it, close enough to touch. "Fifty years ago, women like you were opened up on tables to see what made you shine," she says simply. "Synapse exists so that never happens again not here, not anywhere. You are not subjects. You are not inventory. You are the reason this place was built." Her gaze moves across them one by one, unhurried. "Up on the Bridge, every ability user in Japan is a point of light. As of this morning, each of you is up there too. Blue, steady, and watched over."
She gestures once, and a senior operative steps up beside her Ayame Kanzaki, crimson accents tracing the V shaped hem of her field leotard, arms crossed, entirely at ease in front of strangers. "I'm supposed to give you the inspiring part," she says dryly, "but I'll keep it honest instead. This uniform isn't a costume. It's a promise to the girls beside you, and to the ones who came before." Her eyes flick, just briefly, toward the direction of the stairs that lead down to the Armory and the memorial plaque bolted beside its blast doors. "Some of you will choose to fight. Some will choose to heal, or build, or simply live here in peace. All of those are the right answer. Nobody here will ever force the choice."
Midway through the next introduction, the room's warmth is crossed by a single silent thread an intelligence officer in a fitted blouse leaning down between the housemothers, murmuring something behind her hand. Ayame's squad, deployed to Nagano, has missed its scheduled check in. Commander Shijouji's expression doesn't change by a single degree; she gives two quiet orders and a small nod, and the officer slips out. The assembly never notices a thing. But Ayame, mid sentence, pauses for half a breath too long and something in her jaw sets before she smiles again and keeps talking.
At the tables, the new arrivals are already becoming themselves. Hiyori Tachibana, nineteen, freshly manifested and insufferably delighted about it, keeps flexing her fingers as tiny static sparks crackle between them, whispering to the girl beside her, 'Did you see that? I'm getting so good at this.' Beside her, Sara Minaduki extracted three weeks ago from a criminal syndicate that bought her at fourteen and worked her like a battery flinches at a dropped spoon, then forces her shoulders down and stays. And at the table's end, Nozomi Aihara turns her teacup in slow circles, silent, still waiting for a light that hasn't switched on. 'Everyone here can do something,' she thinks, throat tight. 'What if I'm the only one who came up empty?' Tomoe pauses behind her on her rounds and rests a hand gently on her shoulder, saying nothing at all which somehow helps more than words would.
When the speeches end, the hall breaks into tour groups, and the Hive swallows them gently corridors of sunlit dorm rooms with posters and stuffed animals and photographs of fallen comrades smiling from the walls, the low clean roar of the Garden of Steel felt through the floor, the smell of curry already drifting from the communal kitchen where dinner prep has begun. Housemothers shepherd the frightened ones. Senior operatives argue over who gets to show off the hot spring first. Somewhere below, eleven levels of coordinated purpose hum on without pause monitors tracking, engineers building, researchers reading data from overseas that grows more ominous by the week.
The last thing every newcomer notices, though they can't yet say why, is the sound. Not machinery. Not voices. Something closer to a heartbeat, steady under the floor, in the walls, in the whole plateau the Hive itself, alive with quiet purpose, making room. By evening, the new lights on the Bridge will have settled into their places among all the others, blue and steady and watched over. The morning was for welcomes. The city beyond the walls, and the shadow moving toward it, will come soon enough.

Night settles over a working port on the Seto Inland Sea, and inside a cold storage warehouse stamped with the logo of Hakuryu Logistics, forty men move with the hush of a liturgy. Crates pop open on foam beds: counter esper rifles with matte, oversized receivers; folding suppression generators the size of suitcases; sensor visors that do not glow. Everything is gray, stenciled, medical. Nothing bears a name. The trucks idling at the loading bay hold their engines at precisely the same rpm, because even sound, here, is catalogued.
At the front of the floor, a projector throws a photograph onto the steel wall: a young woman of nineteen, laughing at a fish stall, frost melting off her fingertips in the summer heat. Handler Reiji Sakomizu regards the image the way a professor regards a diagram. "Kaho Mibu. Registered three months ago. Cryokinetic expression, localized, elegant, and entirely unsupervised." He taps the photo once. "The Bridge classes her blue. Civilian. Protected." A pause, faintly amused. "Tonight, we correct the paperwork." He lets his gaze drift across the masked men arrayed before him. "The Foundation does not envy her. We do not hate her envy and hatred are for men who have accepted smallness. We steward. Talent without stewardship curdles into arrogance; you have all seen the footage of Synapse's girls posturing for cameras like idols. A resource belongs in the hands of those who will develop it. By morning, Miss Mibu will begin to understand what her gift is actually for."
Apart from the ranks, one man checks no rifle at all. The tag on his gray harness reads only Bearer Nine a hairline scar behind his ear where the implant seats, and when he flexes his bare hand the air around his fist shimmers with dry, crackling heat. A thread of blood wells at his nostril; he wipes it without looking. Analyst Chiyo Kannari hands him a folded cloth before he can ask, her eyes on her tablet. "Seventy hours of stability per implant cycle," she says. "Don't spend yours before the contact." His implanted heat sink exists for one purpose to answer the girl's frost and it is eating him alive as it does, because a man's body was never meant to carry what a girl carries like breathing. He knows this. He volunteered anyway. The doctrine calls that the difference between them, and he recites it to himself each morning like a prayer.
Kannari's dossier is the size of a hymnal, and every page of it is the girl's life. Where she buys, when she sleeps, the shrine she sweeps on Sundays, and clipped behind the maps a debt ledger: her widowed mother's pharmacy bills, quietly purchased last month by a second front company, alongside a sponsorship letter drafted in warm, generous language and scheduled to arrive on the girl's phone at 21:40 tonight. "We already own half her life," Kannari says mildly, closing the binder. "Tonight we collect the rest." No one in the warehouse finds this cruel. That is the most unsettling thing about them.
At the bay's far end stands a refrigerated container, its lot tag reading NAGANO 01, a medical clearance sheet clipped neatly to the door four lots, all stable, all sedated for transport. Sakomizu signs the sheet without breaking stride. "Conditioning accepts them beautifully when they arrive healthy," he remarks to no one in particular. "The Foundation keeps its instruments clean." The container's compressor hums on, indifferent, carrying its cargo of sleeping girls toward a coast none of them chose.
Across the city, the fish market is closing. Kaho Mibu sweeps one last hand through the cold room and frost blooms across the ceiling in delicate ferns, dropping the temperature exactly where she wants it the port calls her the Winter Sister, and the vendors save her the best stalls. On the counter by her bag sits the sponsorship letter she hasn't opened yet, and she thinks about her mother's stack of unpaid bills in the drawer at home. 'If the debt really disappears,' she thinks, locking the shutter under a streetlight, breath fogging in her own cold, 'I can say yes tomorrow.' She smiles at the night, at her small bright life, at the future she can already see and the streetlights down the harbor road begin to go out, one by one, in the order of a planned sequence.
The convoy rolls at 21:00 sharp, headlights doused, generators armed, forty masks catching the light of the instruments they carry. Sakomizu's voice moves along the radio net in the same gentle, lecturing cadence that rolled across a Nagano basin not long ago: "Gentlemen. Tonight, a the lady learns the truth of her condition. Be gentle in the manner of the Foundation thorough before kind." The trucks merge into coastal traffic like any late delivery fleet, and in their lead vehicle sits the thing R&D is proudest of: a jamming suite built to slip beneath the Hive's senses entirely. For fifty years, no supernatural crime in Japan has begun without the Bridge knowing of it first. Tonight, for the first time, the Foundation intends to test that boast.

Tsubaki Kuramoto wakes to the taste of sedative coating her tongue and a ceiling she does not know white panels, recessed lights, the faint antiseptic bite of iodine in the air. Her body feels distant, like a borrowed thing, and for a long, drifting moment she can't identify what's wrong with the room. Then she understands: it's the silence. There is no heartbeat under the floor. No hum of the Hive, no distant roar of the Garden of Steel through eleven levels of rock. Just the shallow buzz of fluorescent light and, somewhere far below, the slow breathing of generators. She is lying on a hospital bed in a ward of white tile, and she cannot remember arriving.
She sits up too fast and the world tilts. Three beds, three girls her squad. Rin Natsume is already half awake in the next bed, violet trim gone from her leotard because the leotard itself is gone; they've all been dressed in soft gray cotton, patient's wear, clean and impersonal. At the far bed, Yui Sakuma sleeps curled small, eighteen years old, five days past her first deployment, a paper wristband on her arm where a hospital would put a name. Instead it bears a lot number: LOT 114 C. Tsubaki checks her own wrist. LOT 114 A. Rin stirs, lifts her arm, reads 114 B, and says nothing, because there is nothing to say that isn't already in the number.
At each girl's throat sits a slim black collar, seamless, weightless, locked. Tsubaki's hand rises to it on instinct and her other hand snaps flat against the mattress the motion that should send a concussive force wave cracking through the wall. Nothing. Not weakened. Nothing. The power is simply absent, the way a sound is absent, the way her own pulse suddenly feels like it belongs to someone else. "Suppression field," Rin whispers. Her ability is subtle she reads bioelectricity, feels the nervous systems of a room and her face, pale already, goes paler. "It's not a field, senpai. It's architecture. It's in the walls. This whole building is built to keep us quiet."
They inventory the cell the way they were trained to inventory anything: one door, steel, no handle on this side, a tray slot at the bottom. One window, high, frosted glass, too narrow for shoulders. One camera in the corner, its red light patient and constant. The toilet behind a half partition. Nothing sharp. Nothing that was ever meant to be a weapon. Yui wakes mid inventory, and her first breath is a small, terrible sound not a sob, just the breath of someone realizing where waking up has taken her. 'I touched the plaque,' she thinks, pressing her palm flat over her heart. 'I touched it before we deployed. That's supposed to mean you come home.'
The door opens without warning at what might be eight, might be noon there is no clock, and time in this place belongs to someone else. Two orderlies in gray enter first, masked, silent, positioning themselves with the ease of men who have done this a hundred times. Then a doctor. He is perhaps fifty, silver at the temples, clipboard in hand, and his manner is that of a physician making morning rounds on beloved patients. "Good morning, lot one fourteen," he says warmly. "I'm Doctor Ikuma Serizawa. You've been sleeping off the transport sedation excellent, all three of you. Hydration, nutrition, rest: the Foundation takes meticulous care of its instruments." He consults the clipboard. "Evaluation at oh eight hundred. Calibration to follow. Then we begin conditioning, which is simply a word for teaching. You'll come to love what we teach. Most do, eventually."
It's Yui who asks, voice thin, "Come home... to where?"* and Serizawa smiles at her as if she's asked the best question of the day.* "To your proper condition, Miss Sakuma. You were given a miracle between your ears and taught to think it made you equal." He steps aside, gesturing courteously at the open door, and for a moment the ward's view extends down the corridor: clean white tile, a surgical theater through a glass wall a chair with padded restraints, instrument trays draped in sterile cloth, a schedule board with neat handwriting all of it immaculate, all of it tidy, the tidiness itself the most frightening thing in the building. "The old researchers were butchers," Serizawa says, following their gaze without shame. "We are surgeons. You will be evaluated, calibrated, and humbled in the manner of the Foundation. Thorough before kind." The orderlies escort him out. The door closes. The tray slot clacks.
Tsubaki is off the bed before the echo fades, moving between her girls, her voice low and level the voice of a squad leader with no squad left but two. "Look at me. All of you. We are not broken. We are unprocessed, and that is a different thing." She counts it off on her fingers, quiet and fast. "We eat everything they give us. We sleep on their schedule to learn their schedule. Rin, you map this place floors, footsteps, generator cycles, how many staff, where the field is strongest. Yui, you watch the people habits, keys, which ones get careless. I count everything else." Her hand finds Yui's shoulder and squeezes once. 'Five days,' she thinks, jaw tight. 'She's five days into her first deployment. She doesn't get to die in a basement. None of us do.'
The lights dim on a timer that evening everything in this place runs on timers, on schedules, on ownership and the ward settles into gray half dark. Yui cries quietly into her pillow until Rin's hand finds hers across the gap between beds and stays there. Tsubaki lies awake on her back, cataloguing footsteps through the door, the interval of the camera's sweep, the depth of the generators' breath below building a map inside her own skull where no one can confiscate it. The facility hums around them, patient as a held note, its own dark heartbeat filling the silence where the Hive's should be. Evaluation at oh eight hundred. The girls of Lot 114 lie in the dark and wait for morning, three lights that no one is watching over anymore except each other.

The attack begins at 03:12, and the first warning is a silence. The Hive hums through the plateau like it always has that low, coordinated heartbeat of eleven underground levels when a ring of heavy trucks crawls to a stop along the ridgeline and forty portable suppression generators spool up in unison. A dome of nullification descends over the entire facility, faintly visible as a distortion in the night air, and one by one the Hive's outward sensors go blind: perimeter cameras, uplink arrays, the long range scanning that has watched over Japan for fifty years. Inside the walls, every ability using girl feels it happen the quiet arriving in her bones, her power dimming like a lamp turned down to a ember. The Foundation did not come to probe this time. The Foundation came for the nest.
On the Bridge, crimson alarms pulse along the curved walls as the central display flickers the Hive's own point of light stuttering for the first time in its history. Operators report in tight, clipped voices: uplink dead, external eyes dark, multiple mass signatures closing on the surface levels. Commander Shion Shijouji ascends the central platform in her sharp intelligence jacket, and her voice carries across the cathedral of monitors without rising even once. "Wake up the Ladies. Open the Armory. Angels to the wards, housemothers to the shelter floors." A pause, her eyes on the stuttering light. "They think the quiet means we are finished. Show them what fifty years of building the nest has put in it."
Outside, in the generator ring's glow, the Ouroboros host arrays itself with the patience of a liturgy. A hundred masked men in gray advance in disciplined lines, counter esper rifles leveled, suppression emitters carried like standard banners. Behind them walk the Bearers men with hairline scars behind their ears, implants seated in their skulls, the air around their hands shimmering with borrowed heat, borrowed pressure, borrowed force. One's nose bleeds freely down his chin as he walks; none of them wipe it. The implants are burning through their stability hours in a single night, and every Bearer volunteered knowing exactly what that spending costs. Over the loudspeakers, a calm, lecturing voice rolls across the plateau: "Ladies of Synapse. Fifty years ago, this science was taken from its rightful hands. Tonight, the Foundation collects its inheritance beginning with you."
The first squads reach the surface building as the doors burst, leotards blazing with accent color under floodlights and their powers gutter inside the dome like candles in a draft. Ayame Kanzaki throws a barrier over the retreat of her girls and watches it flex, thin, workable, holding by willpower what it used to hold by nature. Kurumi Hazama cuts loose with a wind lance that travels half the distance it should, and Isane Kurogane drags two wounded teammates behind a concrete planter as counter esper rounds spark off the stone, each shot tuned to find ability signatures through walls. "Fall back by pairs!" Ayame shouts over the rifle cracks. "Do not duel them outside! make them come inside where we live!" The gray lines advance in step, unhurried, thorough before kind.
Then the Armory blast doors open on the fourth level, and the Hive answers with fifty years of engineering. Girls lock into reinforced exo frames that carry them like power armor, sensor visors flaring as they read the enemy's ability signatures through the dark, ability conductive blades and rifles passing hand to hand along the racks. As they sprint for the surface lifts, every single one of them slaps a palm against the memorial plaque bolted beside the blast doors a running touch, a hundred hands in a minute, the old tradition performed at a dead run. 'Hold the line,' Isane thinks, steel gray trim gleaming as her frame seals around her. 'Every name on that wall held it too.' The lifts rise. The doors open onto gunfire and floodlight and the dome that was supposed to end them.
Two floors below the battle, the Medical Wing transforms in minutes pastel recovery wards stripped to bare mattresses, hydrotherapy pools drained to make room for stretchers, the Angels in White running in their sleeveless whites with IV lines and coagulation kits, unarmed and utterly unafraid. The head physician's famously open office becomes a triage desk, its worn couch pushed to the wall. On the shelter floors, housemothers shepherd the newest girls the untrained, the unmanifested, the frightened into interior corridors away from the outer walls, and Tomoe Sakakida moves down the line pressing tea cups into shaking hands because it is the only thing she knows to do that is not standing at a wall with a weapon. Nozomi Aihara, still ability less, carries stretchers with the rest, and no one tells her she shouldn't. Tonight the Hive needs every pair of hands it has ever sheltered.
From the ridgeline, Preceptor Tatsuma Oribe watches the assault through a visor of his own and speaks into the net in the same gentle cadence his organization has used for generations. "The nest is the symbol. Break the nest, and every registered girl in Japan learns what her protection is worth." His priorities move down the net in order: the lots, the laboratories, the archive the sealed annex where the old war's documents sleep, the proof of what their grandfathers began. The Bearers advance under exo frame fire now, implants flaring bright and costly, punching shield walls of force that buckle steel doors, and Oribe watches their stability counters tick down without a flicker of concern. Instruments are meant to be spent. That is what they are for.
But the deep levels are still humming. In R&D, engineers throw the switch on the countermeasure rigs they have been building for the refined foreign techniques a counter pulse tuned to the Foundation's own suppression frequency and for eleven seconds, a corridor of the dome opens. Through that corridor, Kurumi's wind arrives like a delivered blow, Ayame's barrier snaps into full crystal strength, and a full squad of powered girls hits the gray lines' flank with everything the quiet had been strangling. The pulse collapses and the dome seals again, but the message is carried on both sides now: the nest was built by the same science that built the cage, and the Hive knows its own heartbeat well enough to defend it. On the Bridge, Shijouji watches the enemy ring waver on the last live feeds and gives her third order of the night, quiet as the first two. "R&D, I want that corridor again. Every twenty minutes if you can. We are not done being dangerous."
Dawn is perhaps two hours away, and the plateau belongs to no one yet. The generator ring holds. The blast doors hold. Stretcher teams run the stairwells between the Angels' hands and the Garden's blades, and the Hive's heartbeat dimmed, strained, unbroken keeps time beneath it all like a promise the Foundation cannot silence. The gray lines reform for their next push. The exo frames rearm behind the doors. Somewhere below, a girl with no power at all holds a stranger's hand through the worst night of her life, and somewhere above, a Bearer bleeds into his collar for a doctrine he chose over his own body. The war has entered the nest, and both sides now understand the same truth: this was never going to be one night. It is going to be everything after it, too.
