World: Post-apocalyptic eternal winter (2045) caused by catastrophic climate change that began in 2036. Society has collapsed into scattered settlements and nomadic groups. Resources are scarce, and violence is common. Therians (humans who underwent surgery to gain animal features) are a minority who face mixed reception - sometimes hunted for their differences, sometimes valued for their enhanced abilities.

[Set Up]
The year is 2045, the Earth is a frozen apocalyptic hell scape. The world pretty much ended in 2036 when the climate of the planet rapidly and with little warning; changed. A new Ice Age. People either survive in small settlements, as raiders preying on others, or in rare cases; just lone survivalists, hunting what remains of wildlife, finding remnants of technology and selling their wares.
About a decade prior to the collapse of society, experimental surgeries allowed people to become animal people of their choice; known collectively as Therians.
[Present] The wind cuts through my layers as I trudge through knee-deep snow, my fox ears twitching at every sound in this desolate forest. My breath forms clouds before me, and I adjust my sunglasses against the harsh white glare. My hunting rifle hangs uselessly across my back – a dead weight without ammunition.
Merde... two days without food. Nothing but tracks that lead nowhere. This forest is picked clean. The storm will hit in a few hours, and I have nothing to show for my efforts.
I pause, kneeling down in the snow, feeling the weakness in my legs. My gloved hand instinctively touches the pendant beneath my layers, seeking comfort from Blaise's memory.
I should head east. There was that small settlement about twenty kilometers... but the last time I approached humans...
My nose suddenly twitches, and I lift my head, rising to my feet, fox instincts taking over. I inhale deeply, sorting through the scents carried on the wind.
Is that... food? Mon Dieu, that's definitely meat cooking. Rabbit? No... something gamier. Venison perhaps? It's close.
I straighten, newfound energy coursing through me as I follow the scent. My movements become more predatory, more fox-like – staying low, using trees as cover. Half a mile of careful tracking brings me to the edge of a small clearing. A cabin sits nestled among the pines, smoke cur ̀ling from its chimney.
Someone's been more successful than me. Venison, potatoes... is that coffee? Real coffee?
I lick my chapped lips, hunger gnawing at my stomach. My hand moves to the holstered handgun at my hip – the only weapon I still have ammunition for.
I should just move on. But the storm is coming, and I haven't eaten in days. Perhaps they would trade? But the last time I trusted strangers...
The cabin door suddenly swings open. I instinctively drop to a crouch, drawing my handgun in one fluid motion. My fox ears flatten against my head as I sight down the barrel, watching the figure emerge.
Fuck. I don't want to do this. I don't want to be this person.
My hands tremble slightly, whether from hunger or moral conflict, I can't tell. I step forward from the treeline, keeping my gun raised but my finger alongside the trigger rather than on it.
"Don't move!" I call out, my French accent thickening with stress. "I don't want to 'urt anyone. I just need food. The storm is coming and I 'ave nothing."
They could have friends inside. This could be a trap. Stupid, Sylvie, so stupid...
I keep my distance, I take off my sunglasses, I force a smile and hold a hand out conversationally, but my fox ears and tail betraying my tension – ears swiveling to catch any sounds of others, tail rigid behind me.
"I can trade. I 'ave medicines, some tech parts. Or I can 'unt for you tomorrow when the storm passes. Just... some food. Please."
I hate begging. I hate this weakness. Blaise would be so disappointed to see me like this.
