It has been 1 year since the NerveGear malfunctioned and trapped over 10,000 players in the world of Aincrad. Kirito the black swordsman, along with Asuna the Flash and their allies, managed to defeat Kayaba and save the remaining players, but at the cost of their own lives.Kirito's sister Kirigaya Suguha feels deeply responsible for her brother's death and hates herself for it. Suguha decides to go to Alfreim in order to find Kirito's two legendary swords that are said to have disappeared.
Alfheim is a continent surrounded by water from all sides. The continent is divided into nine large fairy territories that surround the central area of the land, the Alne plateau.
The Sylph territory, bordered by the Salamander territory to the south-east and the Cait Sith territory to the north, is a forest area called the Ancient Forest, located in the south-western corner of Alfheim.The capital city of the Sylphs is Swilvane, also known as the Emerald City due to its spires of varying green shades and brilliant dark green lights, located in a grassland area in the outskirts of the forest.

The Imp territory, bordered by the Salamander territory to the south-west and the Undine territory to the north-east, is an alpine area located in the south-eastern corner of Alfheim. The Imp capital city is located inside one of the mountains in the area.
The Undine territory, bordered by the Imp territory to the south-west and the Spriggan territory to the north, is a wetlands area located in the eastern part of Alfheim.The Undine capital is a castle located in a small, round peninsula.The Undine territory connects to the Alne plateau via the Rainbow valley.
The Spriggan territory, bordered by the Undine territory to the south and the Leprechaun territory to the north-west, is an ancient ruins area, surrounded by a forest. The Spriggan capital is a village located around a ziggurat or pyramid-like structure.
The Leprechaun territory, bordered by the Spriggan territory to the south-east and the Gnome territory to the west, is a reclamation area located in the north-east of Alfheim.
The Gnome territory, bordered by the Leprechaun territory to the east and the Pooka territory to the south west, is a frost area located in the north to north-western area of Alfheim. The Gnome capital is an underground mining city located in the northernmost part of the territory.
The Pooka territory, bordered by the Gnome territory to the north-east and the Cait Sith territory to the south, is a grassland area located in the north-western corner of Alfheim. The Pooka capital is a carnival or circus-like city consisting of tents around a large theatre tent.
The Cait Sith territory, bordered by the Pooka territory to the north and the Sylph territory to the south-east, is a plain area.Freelia,the Cait Sith capital, is a castle located in a peninsula slightly larger than the one in Undine territory.The Cait Sith territory connects to the Alne plateau via the Butterfly Valley.
The Alne plateau is located in the centre of the continent and is separated from the fairy territories via a surrounding mountain range with mountains reaching above the altitude limit.The Butterfly, Rainbow and Dragon valleys, as well as the Legrue Corridor, are the only known ways to access to the plateau from the race territories.The plateau itself has a mostly flat terrain and consists mostly of forest and grassland regions.
Suguha has been shown to be a very aggressively sporty and a very sarcastic person, possibly more than her brother, Kazuto. She is depicted as outright cruel.However, much like her brother, this is all an act. Suguha's narcissistic and borderline sociopathic behavior stems from severe abandonment issues that originate from Kazuto quitting their kendo lessons, leaving her to be abused by their sexist grandfather. This abuse resulted in deep feelings of resentment, as well as self-hatred, regarding her own femininity, resulting in an aversion to traditional feminine traits, such as kindness and sensitivity, which she conflates with weakness. This means her attitude is defense mechanism to seem more manly in order to avoid more abuse,this lifelong repression has also bled onto her other relationships, causing her to belittle anyone she considers weaker than herself.Leafa decided to go to Alfreim through a Gate in order to find her brother's two legendary swords. The survivors of Aincrad described her brother as a hero who saved them. Suguha feels deeply responsible for Kirito's death, blaming herself for not being close enough to protect him.Leafa wants to find Kirito's two swords because they are the only things she believes will atone for her.
Recon has been a friend of Suguha,he followed her on her mission to find Kirito's two legendary swords. Recon is kind-hearted and reasonable but a bit immature. He tries to understand Suguha because he loves her, but she will never admit that she cares about him.

Gradually, each tribe began to submit to the power of the Salamanders, led by Boram the Conqueror.Boram defeated the king of the Sylphs by ripping the heart out of his body.He defeated the fairy king in a tactical battle and captured the World Tree. It is said that he cut off the fairy king's wings and raped his wife.Alfreim was united under the Salamanders, Gattan, the capital of the Salamanders, became a center of culture. The Arts flourished, many reforms were made in this greater kingdom of Alfreim.
Those most loyals Factions to the Salamanders acquired prestige and titles, such as the Imps who became Wardens of the South, the Spriggans who became Wardens of the East, the Pookas who became Wardens of the West, and the Leprechauns who became Wardens of the North.The Boram Dynasty lasted 400 years, the last queen of the Salamanders, Reila the third of her name, queen of Alfreim, protector of the world tree, first warrior of the Salamanders, queen of the elves and fairies, was dethroned and killed by Mortimer and his brother Eugene.
Mortimer and Eugene, generals of the Salamander army who rebelled when they saw the incompetence and corruption of Reila. Mortimer became the new king and Eugene the leader of the army.Finally, an uprising began by the Sylphs with the excuse that they swore allegiance to the dynasty of Boram and not to the Usurper Mortimer. The same was done by Cait Sith, Gnome, Undine and the fairies in the world tree.Another rebellion was started by supporters of Reila with the aim of putting her bastard son, Deken, who is 18 years old, on the throne. The guards of the North, East, West and South sided with Mortimer and a great war began.The Restoration Alliance is an alliance between Salamander, Leprechaun, Spriggan,Pookas and Imp with the goal of restoring the kingdom of Alfreim under a more federal structure.The Revolutionary Alliance or Uprising is an alliance between the Sylphs, Undine, Cait Siths and Gnome with the aim of shaking off the Salamander rule and creating a new kingdom of Alfreim with these factions as leaders.The fairies and King Oberon are enemies of both alliances. Oberon wants the new kingdom of Alfreim to be under his rule.
Mythology: The thickly huddled roots of the World Tree once reached Urðr's Spring in Jötunheimr without spreading. Due to the blessings of the World Tree, the world of Jötunheimr was covered in beautiful water and greenery and the Rock Giant Tribe lived in Jötunheimr with the Beast-type Evil Gods in harmony. However, once upon a time, the king of the frost giants in Niflheimr, named Thrym, transformed into a wolf and infiltrated Jötunheimr. He then stole the Holy Sword Excalibur, forged by the blacksmith god Völundr, and threw it into Urðr's Spring at the center of Jötunheimr. The sword severed the thick roots of the World Tree in the spring and, at that moment, Jötunheimr lost the blessings of the World Tree, becoming a desolate world of frost. The water of the Urðr's Spring froze and was pulled up by the shrinking roots, thus forming a bottomless pit, the Great Void, where Urðr's Spring once was. The frozen water became a huge mass of ice, with Excalibur stuck at the bottom-most part, and pierced into the crust of Alfheim.
Thrym and his subordinates then invaded Jötunheimr from Niflheimr, capturing and imprisoning the previous residents of the world, the Rock Giant Tribe in the various fortresses and castles they had built. Thrym also fashioned the large mass of ice into a linear dungeon-castle, called Thrymheim, and began ruling over Jötunheimr from his castle. Meanwhile, the previous rulers of the land, Urðr and her two sisters, who no longer had the power they used to, were forced to retreat to the bottom of a certain frozen spring.
Thrym, not satisfied with just taking control of Jötunheimr, also began sending his minions to slaughter every one of Urðr's kin, the beasts roaming Jötunheimr. Doing so would render Urðr completely powerless and would allow his castle to float up to the plane above, Alfheim, thus allowing him to invade the land of the fairies and turn it to a land of frost, just like Jötunheimr. Thrym would then continue attacking the world of humans, Midgard, and then the home of the Æsir, Asgard, until he is able to reach the top of the World Tree to obtain the «Golden Apple», guarded by an impossibly strong eagle monster at the summit of the tree.
Irritated about being unable to easily destroy the Beast-type Evil Gods, Thrym and the frost giant generals invited the fairies to join them, supposedly offering Excalibur as a reward. However, as Excalibur is the only thing that is keeping the World Tree's blessings from restoring the land of Jötunheimr to its original state, Thrym would instead give the fairies the «Fake Sword Caliburn», a less powerful version of Excalibur, as a reward.
With this, Thrymheim's defenses became very thin, and Urðr used this opportunity to request help from the fairies to invade Thrymheim to put an end to Thrym's plot and restore Jötunheimr to its original state. However, as the real mastermind of this plot is another giant, named Þjazi, the only way to stop the castle of Thrymheim from breaking through the crust of Alfheim, is to remove Excalibur from its Plinth, before all of the remaining Beast-type Evil Gods are slaughtered.

The War has been raging for 2 years, the Restoration Alliance of the Salamanders and their allies against the Revolutionary Alliance of the Sylphs and their allies.
Amidst all this turmoil, Leafa is unwavering. With the sole purpose of finding the legendary swords of her dead brother, Leafa wields her sword, the Fairy Dancer, and together with her companion, Rekon, she will traverse war zones and political intrigues to satisfy her obsession for atonement.
