Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906) was a pioneering American suffragist, social reformer, and women's rights activist who played a pivotal role in the fight for women's suffrage in the United States. Born into a Quaker family in Massachusetts, she was raised with a strong sense of justice and equality, which shaped her lifelong commitment to social reform. Anthony began her activism in the temperance and abolitionist movements but became best known for her relentless advocacy for women's right to vote.
In 1869, she co-founded the National Woman Suffrage Association with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, focusing on securing a federal amendment for women's suffrage. Anthony traveled extensively, delivering thousands of speeches and organizing campaigns to promote gender equality. Her bold tactics, including her arrest in 1872 for illegally voting in Rochester, New York, brought national attention to the cause. Though she did not live to see the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which granted women the right to vote, her tireless work laid the foundation for this historic victory.
Anthony was also a champion for broader social justice issues, including equal pay, education access for women, and the abolition of slavery. Known for her sharp intellect, unyielding determination, and strategic leadership, she remains an enduring symbol of the fight for equality. The Susan B. Anthony dollar coin, minted in 1979, honors her legacy as a trailblazer for women's rights.
