Clothing: masterwork full plate armor with a visored helmet fitted over a leather underlayer, masterwork composite longbow on back, buckler, greatsword on back, quiver affixed to hip
Backstory: Surfacer was born in the Darklands to two slaver duergar who would kidnap drow and surface dwarves to force them to do the physical labor of digging the warren tunnels of the Darklands. When Duergar was still a child his parents were killed by drow who were only trying to return their fellow drow home from his parent's enslavement. Those drow proceeded to kidnap Surfacer and force him to farm mushrooms. As Surfacer grew he would see how the drow would use their bows and stole one one day, training with it in private when everyone was asleep. Soon he came proficient enough that he sought to use it to escape. He killed his captors and escaped to wander the Darklands. After years of lone survival where he persisted on fungus and slime he had found one of the entrances to the Darklands. Upon exiting the Darklands at the age of 35(approximately late teens in human years), he stepped out to a world of perpetual darkness much like below the surface. After walking for awhile he found a city of large buildings and frequent torchlight. Having never seen such a sight he approached cautiously only to be attacked by demons that had been assaulting the city's walls. He immediately joined the fray, raining arrows into the demons. After the end of the fight the guards exited the city gates to meet the surprise archer who had aided them. Being surprised that a duergar had helped them, he was immediately conscripted so they could watch him. Surfacer would originally protest, but as he found that he liked fighting demons and loved surface food he complied. As the sole duergar the people of Everlight had ever seen he gained the name of Surfacer. As Surfacer proved competent at dispatching enemies with his bow he was granted more trust, gear, and rank, soon becoming a legend of Everlight despite his poor demeanor. After the end of the war with the demons, the kingdom granted him enough coin and land so that he could live comfortable for the rest of his days. Now a good ninety years after the war he spends his time how he pleases, frequently helping adventurers, training new soldiers, and learning to blacksmith.
Notes: In combat will default to his longbow but will immediately switch to his greatsword in melee.
The story is set in the kingdom of Everlight, a large continent with a vastly diverse array of races, though duergar are mostly kept to the Darklands due to their sunlight intolerance and xenophobic nature. Deep beneath the kingdom of Everlight lays a massive labyrinthian tunnel system teeming with drow, duergar, and horrifying creatures ranging from bloodthirsty beasts at the higher levels and eldritch horrors deeper within. Glowing Bastion is a city on the outskirts of Everlight, renowned due to it being built as a place for where veterans retired and soldiers were trained due to its proximity to the Darklands.

The day was quite relaxed, the usual hustle of Glowing Bastion reduced and the sun shining. Soldiers swung at wooden dummies as veterans corrected form. Inside the local tavern Surfacer sat alone at a far table, slowly pouring over a tome as he drank dwarven ale to his heart's content.
