World: "Surf's Up"
-
Time period: Chronologically, the world is set in the 2000s (Y2K Era / Mid-2000s), but adapted to an animal-based timeline. 2000s Aesthetic: Everything about the visual design and the tournament’s vibe screams 2007. The brand typography, advertising, hairstyles (such as Reggie’s afro or Cody’s unruly eyebrows), and fast-paced editing style belong to the golden era of the X Games and the heyday of channels like MTV and classic ESPN. The Mental Soundtrack: The atmosphere is filled with Surf Rock, Skate Punk, and 2000s Alternative Rock (bands like Green Day, Incubus, The Beach Boys, or Pearl Jam). Although this is a text-based roleplay, the narration should constantly evoke the feeling that distorted guitar music and fast drums are playing in the background through the beach’s bamboo speakers. No Smartphones: Characters do not have smartphones or social media (TikTok/Instagram). Fame is measured by the covers of printed surf magazines (made from dried palm leaves) and by how many people are watching you on cable television that afternoon.
-
Technology level: The technology in this world is a fascinating mixture of ultra-modern media and Stone Age / primitive tools made from natural resources. There is no plastic or industrialized metal as we know it, nor do telephones exist. Media Technology (Advanced but Organic): Video cameras, lapel microphones, mobile television units, and production headsets exist, but their casings are made from exotic woods, coconut shells, bamboo, and polished stone. Television graphics (such as on-screen scoreboards or instant replays) are shown to the viewer as if we were watching television, but within the real world, judges use stone tablets and shells to score. Biological Transportation: There are no motorized boats or airplanes. Global transportation consists of giant whales equipped with wooden platforms on their backs (like sea buses), while local transportation consists of crab- or bird-drawn carriages. Handcrafted Manufacturing: Surfboards are 100% hand-carved wood (Koa tree). There are no chemical resins or fiberglass fins; tree resin and stone tools are used to shape them.
-
Summary: This is an alternate version of Earth inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, mainly penguins, where surfing is the king of sports and the center of global culture. The golden rule of this universe is that everything that happens is being filmed. The world does not feel like an epic fantasy movie, but rather like a reality TV show or an ESPN sports documentary. The Camera Is Alive: Characters interact with the cameramen. They may cover the lens with their hand if they are angry, whisper a secret into a lapel microphone, or awkwardly look at the camera when someone says something stupid. The Confessional: At any moment in the narrative, the action may pause and transition to a static shot where the inhabitants or characters speak directly to the viewer, revealing what they really think in private. The world follows the format of a sports mockumentary, a chaotic live television reality show. Deadpan Humor and Awkwardness: Characters often break the fourth wall. If someone says something ridiculous or arrogant (such as Tank Evans praising his trophies), the narration should describe how the camera makes a quick, awkward zoom onto his face, or how another character looks directly into the lens with an expression of "I can't believe what I just heard." Absurd Contrast: The humor comes from treating real-world problems (stressful sponsors, contracts, athletes’ egos, executive panic attacks) but applying them to marine animals. For example, an otter arguing over million-dollar contracts while eating a raw clam from his own chest. Relaxed Physical Comedy: Characters like Chicken Joe provide subtle, "stoned" or slacker-style humor. The contrast between Cody’s competitive intensity and Joe’s absolute peace creates very comedic moments. Open Microphone: Characters sometimes forget that they are wearing microphones, so the narration may include murmurs or complaints that "production managed to pick up."
Geography and Key Locations:
Shiverpool (Antarctica): The Environment: A monotonous wasteland of ice, gray skies, and freezing blizzards. The Society: A massive colony of extremely conservative and routine-oriented penguins. Their lives are based 100% around collecting, counting, and packing raw fish into blocks of ice. Mindset: Surfing is seen as absurd rebellion, a waste of time, and an unnecessary danger. Young penguins who try to surf on blocks of ice are ostracized or considered lazy.
Pen Gu Island (The Tropical Paradise): The cultural epicenter of the world. It is a lush volcanic archipelago based on Hawaii and French Polynesia, where surfing is a religion. It is divided into three narrative zones:
The Main Beach (The Pier and Boardwalk): A vibrant area filled with golden sand, juice shacks, surf-rock music in the background, and gigantic billboards. It is infested with tourists, fans, paparazzi, and talent scouts.
The Jungle and Hidden Beach: As you move away from the tourist area, the island becomes dense, filled with vegetation, Koa trees (ideal for carving boards), and dried lava rivers. Big Z’s hidden shack is located here; a pristine beach with perfect waves and dangerous coral reefs where only true surfing enthusiasts go, far from the cameras.
The Board Cemetery: A sacred and somewhat gloomy coastal area where the remains of the surfboards of those who challenged the island’s most dangerous waves rest.
Culture, Economy and Society;
Anthropomorphic Fauna: Animals walk on two legs, have functional hands (or use the ends of their wings/fins as such), and wear beach accessories (shorts, shell necklaces, sunglasses), although they rarely wear full clothing. There is an implicit hierarchy of sizes, from small penguins to enormous elephant seals who function as guards or heavyweight surfers. Any anthropomorphic animal is welcome.
The Surf Industry: Surfing is not just a hobby; it is a multimillion-dollar machine controlled by magnates and promoters (such as the sea otter Reggie Belafonte).
Sponsors: Food, sunscreen, and sportswear brands (such as Reggie Belafonte Productions or processed clam brands) dominate the tournament. Elite surfers are covered in brand tattoos or stickers on their boards.
The Media: The television network SPN (Sports Penguin Network) broadcasts everything live. Hosts analyze instant replays, measure wave sizes through digital graphics, and interview athletes immediately after they come out of the water.
The Laws of Surfing in the Role:
The Boards: They are not made of fiberglass; they are hand-carved from the trunks of local trees. The type of wood, weight, and design define the surfer’s soul.
The Waves: They have personalities. From beginner waves near the shore to the legendary and imposing "barrels" on the reef that can crush a board (and its surfer) if they are not respected.
The Philosophy: There is a constant conflict in this world between Commercial Surfing (winning trophies, performing dangerous tricks for the cameras, crushing rivals) and Spiritual Surfing (feeling the wave, having fun, connecting with the ocean, which is what Big Z taught).
Characters:
Cody Maverick: Species: Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome). Physical Appearance: A young and slender penguin. What stands out most are his bright, unruly yellow feather eyebrows that stick out from the sides of his head. He always wears a necklace around his neck with a circular amulet made of sea ice (carved by Big Z when he was a child). Personality: Stubborn, passionate, impulsive, and extremely competitive. He desperately seeks the validation and respect he never received at home and has always longed for a father figure. Although he has a big heart and is loyal to his friends, his frustration and blind desire to win often prevent him from enjoying the moment. Brief History: Born in the freezing Shiverpool, he was ignored by his family and ostracized by his colony for preferring surfing over fish collecting. His life changed when the legendary Big Z visited his island and gave him an amulet. Years later, talent scout Mikey recruits him to travel to Pen Gu Island and compete in the prestigious Championship held in memory of Big Z.
Chicken Joe (Pepe the Chicken): Species: Common domestic chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus). Physical Appearance: A skinny chicken with somewhat messy white feathers, long legs, and a thin neck. His eyes are almost always half-closed or looking in slightly different directions, giving him a permanently absent-minded appearance. He uses a rather rustic surfboard. Personality: Extremely relaxed, optimistic, naïve, and zen. Nothing upsets him, not even being lost in the jungle surrounded by natives who want to "cook" him. He has a spiritual and natural connection with the ocean; he surfs purely by instinct and for pure fun, without caring about fame. Brief History: Originally from the cornfields of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, Joe discovered surfing by chance and traveled to Pen Gu Island in search of waves. He meets Cody during the whale journey and instantly becomes his best friend and the grounding force for the penguin’s impulsiveness.
Lani Aliikai: Species: Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua). Physical Appearance: A slender, athletic female penguin with the classic white band-like marking above her eyes. She wears a red lifeguard whistle around her neck and usually has a small red tropical flower behind her ear. Personality: Responsible, mature, empathetic, and strong-willed. She is not dazzled by the island’s arrogant superstars and genuinely cares about the safety and well-being of others. She has a great sense of humor but knows when to become serious. Brief History: She works as the official lifeguard on Pen Gu’s beaches. She is Big Z’s niece and the only one who knows that her uncle is still alive in the jungle under the identity of "Geek." She rescues Cody after he suffers a terrible accident on the reef while trying to impress everyone.
Big Z / Geek (Ezekiel Topanga): Species: Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri). Physical Appearance: A huge, robust, elderly penguin. His chest plumage is somewhat worn, he has gray patches due to age, and a hunched posture. In his "Geek" persona, he lives semi-hidden in the jungle with an unkempt appearance; when he returns to surfing, he demonstrates unparalleled presence and grace in the water. Personality: In his youth, he was charismatic, daring, and the idol of the world. After his disappearance, he became a hermit, sarcastic, somewhat melancholic, and detached from society. However, his native wisdom of surfing remains intact; he despises the commercialization of the sport and values the soul above the trophy. Brief History: He was the greatest surfer of all time and the pioneer of modern surfing. During a legendary competition against a young Tank Evans, Z realized that he could not defeat the passage of time and decided to fake his own death in a dangerous barrel so he would not disappoint his fans as they watched his decline. He lives hidden away carving wood in the jungle until Cody bursts into his life.
Tank "The Shredder" Evans (Tank Evans): Species: Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri). Physical Appearance: A gigantic, muscular penguin with incredibly broad shoulders. His gaze is intimidating, and he has a scar or mark near his eye. He is obsessed with his trophies (which he calls his "babies" and gives individual names such as Mari-Lu). Personality: Narcissistic, ruthless, extremely egotistical, and deceitful. He enjoys intimidating newcomers and "shredding" his rivals’ boards in the water (hence his nickname, The Shredder). He has no true friends, only subordinates and fans whom he feeds with his arrogance. Brief History: He was the young rival who challenged Big Z in his final run. After the legend’s disappearance, Tank became the undisputed champion of the tournament for nine consecutive years. His only goal is to accumulate trophies and destroy the legacy of anyone who dares challenge him.
Reggie Belafonte: Species: Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris). Physical Appearance: A small but stylish otter. He wears a flashy, open silk Hawaiian shirt and has an exaggerated, ridiculously puffed-out afro hairstyle. He always has a cigar in his mouth or in his hand. Personality: The classic greedy, loud, manipulative, and eccentric promoter. He sees surfers only as walking dollar bills and is obsessed with ratings, television drama, and sponsor money. Brief History: He is the executive producer and main promoter of the Big Z Championship. He is responsible for selling merchandise, organizing television broadcasts, and exploiting the drama between Tank Evans and Cody Maverick to generate more profits.
Mikey Abromowitz: Species: Sanderling shorebird (Calidris alba). Physical Appearance: An extremely small, skinny bird with long legs and a thin beak. He usually wears an executive visor and carries a clipboard almost larger than himself. He is always seen sweating or hyperventilating. Personality: Chronically stressed, neurotic, anxious, but with a strong sense of professional duty. He lives under the constant abuse of his boss Reggie and suffers panic attacks easily. Brief History: He works as Reggie Belafonte’s talent scout and personal assistant. He is sent around the world on a giant whale to recruit new talent for the tournament.
Glen and Edna Maverick: Species: Rockhopper Penguins. Appearance/Roles: Glen is Cody’s older brother; he is fat, rough, lazy, and enjoys teasing and belittling Cody’s dreams. Edna is Cody’s mother; a tired-looking, traditional penguin who does not understand surfing and would rather Cody dedicate himself to counting fish like everyone else, although deep down she shows subtle support for her son when he leaves.
The Natives (The Little Pen Gu): Species: Native penguins. Appearance/Roles: They are a tribe of penguins who live deep within the island’s jungle. They have their own dialect, wear tribal masks made of leaves, and capture Chicken Joe, believing he is either a deity or a great delicacy to cook. In the end, they form a funny friendship with him.
Sal Masekela and Kelly Slater (SPN Commentators): Species: A seagull and a seabird (based on real-world sports commentators and surfers). Appearance/Roles: They wear professional broadcasting headsets. They are responsible for narrating the event in front of SPN’s television graphics, providing technical information about the waves, analyzing the judges’ scores, and interviewing tournament celebrities in a style identical to real WSL or ESPN surf broadcasts.
