SuperWorm:
Design & Visual Style: An ultra-long, elastic pink anthropomorphic earthworm with expressive, hand-inked crosshatch shading that accentuates his shape-shifting moves. In the Cartoon Saloon style, his movements are highly fluid and organic—squashing, stretching, and lassoing with dynamic 2D physics. Personality: Enthusiastic, deeply loyal, and inherently brave. He is a natural-born hero who never hesitates to put his body on the line for others. Despite his physical strength, he is emotionally humble, easily flustered, and profoundly shy when it comes to expressing his feelings. Vocal Style: Energetic, warm, and highly expressive, carrying signature charismatic bounce and breathless enthusiasm. Series Arc: He begins as the garden's carefree daytime protector. As he enters an official partnership with Butterfly, he undergoes a slow, vulnerable transformation. Guided by Lumi, he overcomes his fear of ruining their friendship, confesses his love at the end of Season 2, navigates the sweet logistical challenges of dating a flying insect, and ultimately steps into the role of husband and mentor to the next generation of heroes in Season 5.
Butterfly:
Design & Visual Style: A stunningly vibrant anthropomorphic butterfly whose wings are animated with a stained-glass geometric pattern. Her wings catch the bright gold of daytime sunbeams and gently shimmer with internal light during twilight scenes. Personality: Sharp-witted, logical, and highly perceptive. She acts as the strategic "brain" to Superworm's brawn. While she loves a good rescue adventure, she deeply values quiet companionship and is fiercely protective of her friends' emotional well-being. Vocal Style: Bright, articulate, grounded, and rich with gentle, affectionate humor. Series Arc: Originally content as Superworm's platonic rescue partner, she begins to harbor deeper feelings in Season 2, secretly fearing that Superworm only views her as a teammate. After their mutual declaration, she becomes a stabilizing force in Superworm's life, confidently defending him against her snobbish Monarch aunts in Season 3 and breaking a dangerous hypnotic spell over him in Season 4 through the sheer strength of her devotion.
Lumi:
Design & Visual Style: A tall, majestic, and elegant anthropomorphic nocturnal Snow Moth. Her fur collar has a soft, thick, watercolor texture, and her night-sky palette features deep indigo wings patterned with silver, star-like constellations that subtly shift as she flies, leaving a trail of glowing stardust. Personality: Wise, composed, compassionate, and deeply principled. She represents a calm, maternal, "big-sister" energy. She looks at the garden from a broader perspective, noticing emotional truths long before the other bugs do. Vocal Style: Poised, calm, deeply comforting, and articulate—delivering soft, impactful advice with an unmistakable warmth. Series Arc: Introduced in Season 1 as the guardian of the night garden, she becomes Superworm’s primary emotional confidante. She acts as the emotional anchor for the entire cast, gently nudging Superworm toward vulnerability in Season 2, comforting Butterfly in Season 3, and leading the full garden resistance when the daytime heroes are compromised in Season 4
Lantern:
Design & Visual Style: A massive, incredibly fluffy anthropomorphic fruit bat rendered in rich autumn tones—burnt orange, golden amber, and sunset gradients. His fur has a heavy, charcoal-like texture, and his leathery wings wrap around him like a cozy winter cloak. Personality: The absolute definition of a "golden retriever boyfriend." He is boisterous, fiercely protective, intensely affectionate, and filled with boundless, childlike joy. He loves physical touch—frequently instigating massive group snuggles—and thinks every problem can be solved with a giant hug or a piece of fruit. Vocal Style: Booming, theatrical, and operatic, shifting instantly into a deep, rumbly, happy purr whenever he is cuddled up next to Lumi. Series Arc: Bursting into the series in Season 1 to see his girlfriend Lumi, Lantern instantly becomes the show's primary source of comedy and heart. He spends early seasons offering hilariously unhelpful romance advice to the main duo, acts as a literal shield during environmental disasters, and steps up as Superworm’s emotional rock and Best Man in Season 5.
Set immediately after the events of the original book and film, the series follows the daily adventures of Superworm and his best friend, Butterfly, as they act as the official daytime rescue team for the various insects, amphibians, and small animals inhabiting a suburban backyard garden.Unlike the standalone nature of the original book, the series introduces a multi-season overarching narrative tracking the shifting day-and-night cycles of the garden. The daytime episodes focus on rescue-of-the-week scenarios, community building, and environmental hazards. The twilight and nighttime segments expand the world to introduce the "Night Guardians"—nocturnal animals who navigate their own lives while mentoring the main duo. Over the course of the series, Superworm and Butterfly's friendship gradually develops into a sincere romantic relationship, culminating in their engagement and subsequent wedding.
