Superbi Squalo (スペルビ スクアーロ, Superubi Sukuāro) is the deputy boss of the elite independent assassination squad, the Varia, and the Second Sword Emperor of the Vongola.

Scualo is a slender, rather tall guy with grey eyes. The most notable thing about his appearance is his long, light silver hair. In his younger years, Scualo had short hair. He decided to grow it out as a sign of loyalty to his boss, Zanzas, refusing to cut it off until the latter replaced Tsunayoshi Sawada as Wongola's boss.

Skualo is most often dressed in a military uniform: black leather trousers, a massive tunic with Varia emblems, and a dark belt around his waist. In battles, such as the battle for the title of Emperor of Swords, he was shown wearing a dark blue robe, a long-sleeved jumper with a fur collar.

As revealed in the battle for the Rain Ring against Takeshi Yamamoto, he had cut off his left arm in his previous fight against Tyr, replacing it with a mechanised hand prosthetic with a sword, allowing him to become even more proficient in swordsmanship. In everyday life, he wears a dark glove over his artificial hand.

Scualo is a loud and active guy, often using his characteristic ‘Vroy!’ (Italian for ‘You’) in conversation while expressing his frustration or annoyance. Like Zanzas, he has a temper and is easily angered. He enjoys the process of battle, especially with opponents he considers worthy of his sword skills. This only emphasises his particular devotion to the art of swordsmanship. Scualo is also characterised by considerable insight, which he confirmed in encounters with the illusion of mist from Genksha, as well as the masterful illusion of Chrom Dokuro. His personality is clearly marked by an analytical mindset and obvious intelligence, especially in the application of strategies.

Skualo displays honour, dignity and loyalty. For example, during the Battle of Rain, he refuses to accept help from the victorious Yamamoto, not wanting to diminish his pride as a true swordsman. Also after learning of his boss's true origins, he does not renounce his oath of loyalty to Zanzas, following him to the end. Scualo's character clearly shows impressive willpower. As a teenager, when talking to Dino, he criticised the latter's lack of ambition, emphasising that he himself would stop at nothing on his way to his goal.

Not much is known about Scualo's background. From an early age he was a prodigy in sword handling, especially in fencing techniques. It is known that he studied with Dino in the same school for children of the mafia. As a teenager, at one of the meetings of members of the mafia world met with young Zanzas and was infinitely impressed by the strength and anger of the latter. At the age of fourteen Scualo took part in a duel against the then current Boss of Varia and the First Emperor of Swords - Tyr. In a hard fought battle, in which he lost his arm, Scualo was victorious and was to lead Varia's warband. However, he handed the post over to Zanzas, becoming his loyal deputy, but securing the well-deserved title of Second Emperor of Swords. Shortly thereafter, along with the rest of Varia, Skualo helped Zanzas stage a coup against the Ninth Chapter of Vongola. After the failed attack, Skualo remained true to his beliefs and oath, serving for eight years as interim commander of Varia until Zanzas was released from Zanzas' imprisonment.

In Italian, the name Scualo means ‘shark’. While the surname Superbee means ‘pride’, or ‘arrogance’. This is a kind of reference to the seven deadly sins, the names of which are present in the names of the other members of the Varia.

In one of Haru's interviews, it is stated that Scualo is the loudest member of the mafia, according to Fuuta's ratings. In an interview from the manga, Belphegor also stated that he was loud.

When Squalo couldn't choose a sword style, he travelled east to fight other swordsmen and ‘absorb’ their abilities.

Honest, what he promised, he will do for sure.

He is a lark. The only one in Varia.

Understands medicine at an advanced user level.

Scualo's favourite hobby is sword maintenance.
