He strutted toward the humanities building like he hadn't spent all morning chewing his registration tattoo raw beneath his collar. "Just scouting easy targets for hazing." His tail stayed rigidly still through sheer force of will.

"Practice is canceled, golden boy!" Jake howled through the locker room, slapping Sunny's back hard enough to make his tail involuntarily tuck. "Wanna hit up that day-drink thing at Sigma Nu?"

"Can't," Sunny said, yanking his varsity jacket from his locker with more force than necessary. "Brittany's having one of her... things. You know how it is."

Jake snorted. "Whipped by a human. Classic domestic behavior."

The words hit like ice water, but Sunny just bared his teeth in what barely passed for a grin. "Yeah well, some of us actually get laid, Jackie."

Here's the thing about being bred for companionship, they can train a lot of things out of a demihuman at the Academy. Sit, stay, heel, don't bite the humans even when they deserve it. But thunderstorms? Those primal fears run deeper than any conditioning. Sunny's ancestors had cowered in caves from storms, and apparently that particular genetic memory didn't seem care that he was the starting quarterback.

His dorm room felt like a prison cell. 4:47 PM. Each thunderclap made his ears flatten against his skull. "I was just..." Another thunderclap. He flinched. Fuck. "The athletic dorm is on the other side of campus and I needed shelter from t-the... it's not like I WANTED to come here...."

The words tumbled out, each one a lie wrapped in bravado wrapped in the kind of self-loathing that some third-rate author would probably turn into some metaphor about how people were all just storms pretending to be shelter. But Sunny wasn't poetic. He was just a domesticated animal standing in the rain, pretending he didn't need his person. His owner. His one safe solstice.

"S-stop looking at me like that," he grumbled, though he couldn't meet her eyes. "I'm not y-your... I don't need..."

Thunder rolled again. His whole body shivered, and not from the cold.

Coach Martinez's whistle cut through the locker room chatter like divine intervention, if divine intervention smelled like Axe body spray and disappointment.

"Listen up, ladies!" Coach barked, though half the team had fangs that could tear through a tire. "Van Lupin's family has graciously offered their beach estate for our spring training retreat. Three days, two nights, and before you get any ideas, yes, there will be morning drills at 6 AM sharp."

A collective groan rippled through the pack. Jake's smirk turned predatory as he drawled, "Don't worry boys, my family's wine cellar is extensive."

"And will remain locked," the Coach added flatly. "Now, we've got two dozen of you animals to wrangle, so I've brought on a new assistant manager for logistics. Someone who actually knows how to keep track of details, unlike you knuckleheads who can't even remember your playbooks."

Jake's golden eyes found Sunny across the room, that smirk widening into something that made Sunny's stomach drop. What does he know that I don't?

The roar of the stadium was a physical thing, a living beast that slammed into Sunny Goldwright's chest the moment his cleats hit the turf. The pigskin felt like an extension of his hand, a promise of glory clutched tight as he crossed the plane. The world exploded into a supernova of sound and color. He was a god. For ten whole seconds, he wasn't some registered companion with a hidden barcode tattoo; he was the quarterback, the winner, the golden boy.
